Ithappensinthemind.It'salmostlikecultivatingthatprocessofaskingyourself,beingmorecontemplative,andbeingmoremindful,soIwouldsayit'smoreofthemindfulnessprocessturnedonitselfonadeeperlevelwhereyou'rejustliterallyaskingyourself,andsomepeoplehave...Ihavemygo-toquestionslike,"Hmm.What'sthatallabout,Ozioma?"Thator,"WhatamIafraid?What'sreallygoingon?"It'susuallyjustkindoflikeaself-imposedquestionandleavingroomtobewithwhateverarises,thenusuallythenwhatwillfollowthereisalittlebitofbackandforthwithyourself,or,forinstance,IhadaspeakingengagementinBerlinlikeaboutacoupleofweeksago.

TherewasamomentwhereIdidfeelabitofanxietyoralittlebitoffearandIaskedmyself,didmyprocess,right,with,"WhatareyoureallyafraidofOzioma?Oh,you'reafraidthatyou'renotpreparedbecausetheydidn'tgiveyoualltheinformation,andit'skindofonthespot."ThenIsaidtomyself,okay,whatdoweneedtodoinordertoaddressthisfear,andformeinthatmomentitbecametakingawalkthroughBerlinintheearlymorning,smellingflowers,goingthroughthegardens,beingwithnature,youknow,beingwiththecityitselfandallowingthewalktoeaseandsoothemynerves.

Sometimeswhat'shappeningisthatwehaven'tgivenourselvesenoughofthestimulusandenoughoftheinputsinordertoco-createthedesiredoutput,thedesiredresult.


FormewhatI'vefoundisjustbyaskingthatquestion,gettingtheresponseofwhyIwasafraid,andthenaskingmyselfafollow-upquestion,"Whatwoulditlooklikeorwhatdoyouneedinordertoreleasethisfear?"Takeawalk.Gettinginaction.Beingphysical.WhatthisreflectsisadeeperlevelofconnectionwithmyselfthatI'velearnedovertime,andthatI'vealsoseeninmanyofthewhatIliketocallthetransformationalmasters,islikepeoplelikemydearcolleagueJeanHouston.

Likelearningtocultivateadifferentkindofrelationshipwithyourselfsothatyoucanaskyourselfthosequestions,soyoucanleaveroomfortheanswers,andsothatnewpossibilitiescanemergethatyoucantakeactionon,sothatyouarenolongerlimitedbythefear,butitactuallyfuelsyouinawaytogettoanevenmoreinspiredresult.

BenStein: Loveit.Iloveit.Takingastepback.Tellusalittlebitaboutyourstoryalittlebittoframeupyourhistoryandyoucanstartasfarbackasyouwanttogo,butfortheaudiencelisteningIknowwemetmanymoonsagowhenwewerebothintheadvertisingindustryandthat'showwemet.Youcanstartearlierifyouwant,butwhat'sthebackstoryandwhendidyouhearthecallingandhowdidyouactonthecallingtoswitchfocusordivedeeperintothisrealmoftransformationandpersonaltransformation?

Ozioma: It'ssointeresting,becauseIthinkthatthisconversationaroundpurposeandconversationaroundstoryisonethatiseverchangingforme.SincethisallstartedI'lltalkaboutwhathappenedtomewhenIfirstawoketothepossibility.MostrecentlyI'veactuallybeengoingdeeper.I'veactuallybeengoingtotheyoungerversionofme,right,thegirlwhofeltthatshewasn'tgoodenough,thatwasgrowingupintheBronx,thatwasborntoNigerianparents,firstgeneration.BorninNigeriaIwas,butthenraisedhere.Alwaysfeelingkindoflikeoutofsorts,ifyouwill,likefeelinglikenotreallyaNigerian,notreallyAmerican,gangly,skinny,nerdy.Nerdylittleblackgirl,andalwaysjustfeelingkindoflikewheredoIbelong,andnotreallyfittinginandbeingvery,veryalmostfreakishlysmart.

IlearnedlateronthatIwaslikevery,verysmartandIsawthingsthatIguesspeoplefeltthatI..."Wow,howdoessheknowthesethings?"Ijusthadadeepknowing.ThisdeepknowingalsocamewithapricebecauseIremembergoingintoalibraryandgoing,atsevenyearsold,andgoingintotheadultsection,theyoungadultsectionandpickingupbooksonlowselfesteem,becauseIdidn'treallyknowwhatitwasbutIknewthatIhadit.IknewthatIhadtounderstandwhatIdidn'tfeelgoodaboutmyselforifIwasactuallygoingto"makeit."

BenStein: That'sbeautifulrightthere.Youstartedrealearly.ImeanIcouldhavedonemyselfdoingsomefavorsdoingthat.Iwaspickingupbooksaboutaliensandabductionsandfreakingmyselfoutasakid.Maybethat'swhyI'mstilldealingwithfear,butIloveitthatyoustartedthatearly.

WhatthatdevelopedwithinmewasthisdualawarenessthattherewasalifethatIwaslivingbuttherewasacapacityforsomuchmore.TheonlywaythatIwasgoingtoaccessthatmoreisifItrulybegantoevolveintothepersonthatcanmakethathappenformyself.Thatpersonalagency,youknow,whatRalphWaldoEmersonandthetranscendentalists,right,andmanyotherpeoplehavewrittenabout,it'skindofyoustarttorealizethatthere'ssomethinginsideofyouthattrulyhastocomeforthinorderforyoutoexperiencedesire,thedesireofreality.

Thatstartedformeveryearly,right,knowingthatmygreatestchallengewastrulybelievinginmyselfandreallybelievingthatIwasworthsomething,becauseIalsohadafatherwhowasneverreallyaround.ThenwhenIturnedthirteenhedecidedtostayintheBronxandleaveus,fivekids,andmymotherwithherfivekidsmovedtoUpstateNewYork,theHudsonValley.Igrewupalwaysfeelingliketherewassomethingmissing,andmypurposethenbecametoreallybeabletoseethegiftthatIwas.

Thenthatleadmetodomylife'sworkofreallyhelpingandsupporting,whetherit'sanindividual,abusiness,acommunitytobeabletosay,"Waitaminute.There'ssomethingworthwhileinyou.Youhavesomethinguniqueandpowerfulandprecious,andthatallyouneedtodoistostaywithit,toexploreit,tohonorit,toamplifyit,andbeforeyouknowititisgoingtobethisbeautifulbeaconthat'sgoingtotransformyourlifeandalsotransformtheworld."That'swhatmyjourneybegan.Yes,itbeganyounggirl,sevenyearsold,butIwasalsogoingthroughthepaceslearningasmuchasIcouldthroughschool,andIwenttocollege.IstudiedEnglish.

Itwasn'tuntilIhadatransformationalexperience.Ihadanumberoftransformationalexperiences,butitactuallystartedoffwitharelationshipgonesouth.Iwasdatingthis


particularindividual,andheandIwentfrombeingsomuchinlovetohimalmostenactingphysicalviolenceuponmeonedayinBrooklyn.Iwasliketwenty-four,twenty-fiveyearsoldatthetime.ItwasinterestingbecauseIknowthatalotofmyfemaleormalecounterpartswhensomethinglikethathappens,weeitherblameourselvesandsay,"Oh,myGod.Itwasallmyfault,"orweblametheotherperson.

Ifoundmyselfstartingtoblamehimandthenavoicesaidtome,"WhatwasyourroleinthisOzioma?Youwerelovedonesandnowthishappened.Whatwasyourrole?"Iremembersayingtomyself,"Wow,ifIhavethepowertogenerateandco-createloveandthentogenerateandco-createenmity,IwanttounderstandhowIdothissoIcanminimizethiskindofexperienceinmylife."Inthatmomentattwenty-fouryearsoldgoingontwenty-five,Ibecameoneoftheearlywaveofwomenofcolorwhowenttotherapy,becauseIwaslike,"Iwanttoliveanawesomelife,andIgottounderstandwhatthisisabout."

Inthatfirstdaywithmylifecoach/therapistsheaskedmethequestion,"Whatdoyoureallywant?"Justlikethatitcametome,andIjustknew.Ineverhadathoughtofbeinganykindoflifecoachorallthat,butIsaid,"Iwanttodowhatyou'redoingbutforthepeopleI'mmeanttoserve."OnthewayhomefrommyfirstcoachingsessionIheardthisvoiceinsideofmethatkeptonsaying,"Mayyourinnerlightburnbright.Mayyourinnerlightburnbright."BythetimeIgothomeIcalledmygirlfriendupandIwaslike,"IthinkI'mmeanttocreateacompanycalledBurnBright."

ThenIheardthevoice,"Lifeworks."Isaid,"Ah,that'sit.It'saboutlifeandit'saboutwork,butit'salsoaboutmakinglifeworkandit'salsoabouthelpingpeoplecreatetheirlife'swork."WhatIfoundisthatinthatmomentmywillingnesstobelievethatlifecouldbebetter,thatIwasentitledtoseekthehelpthatIneededformylifetogetbetter,andthentheresponseofwhetherwecallitGod,whetherwecallittheuniverse.Ireceivedamessagethattomesetmeonthecourseoffulfillingmylifepurpose,andI'vebeenonthatcoursesincethen,andI'mthirty-fivenow,soit'sbeenoveradecadenowofdoingthiskindoftransformationalpersonalwork,andthenalsohelpingothersdothesame.

BenStein: That'squiteastorythere.Imeanit'slikeyoustartwiththisearlyselfawarenessandhighintelligenceandemotionalEQandyourealizeyouhavesomuchpowerandneedtolearnhowtowieldit,andthenjustbysimplyseekingthathelp,ithelpstoinstantlyclarifythingsforyou.Thanksforsharingthat.

Ozioma: It'sinterestingbecausethatitselfhasbecomeajourneythatIdidnotevenexpectwouldblossomintowhatit'sbecome.Wetalkabout,youknow,youandIwemeteachotheryearsagointheworldofadvertising.What'sreallyinterestingisthatthisDreamDayorWorldDreamDaywhichtakesplaceonSeptember25theveryyear,mylastcorporatetripwhenIwasavicepresidentofculturalinsightandinnovationaboutfouryearsago,attheendof2012,Ireadthisbook.Iactuallydidn'treadthewholebook.IsawthisbookinthehotelroominCalifornia,andthenIopeneditup.ItwascalledDon'tDieWithYourMusicStillinYou.ItwaslikethesubwaySinatraguystory.
