programmers. Most use

QuarkXPress. They and their clients

increasingly require the power of one-to-one

communication. A new VIPP Tool extends QuarkXPress to

enable graphic artists to design personalized documents:

Templates make the process hum. Templates

describe the elements of the job including

fonts, forms, color and images. Templates also

contain rules for handling the variable data,

such as its placement on the form, or its use in

generating bar charts, pie charts, graphs,

barcodes and Xerox DataGlyphs™.

VIPP Tools can be used to design and deploy

templates. Deploying templates means delivering them over the Internet to devices where personalized

output is produced such as printers, screens, document repositories—anywhere there is a PostScript

interpreter. Templates can be sent to a printer and stored on its disk drive. Template design and

deployment need only happen once thus minimizing network traffic. Personalized document

production can take place many times, even millions of times, as driven by the variable data source.
