The following discussion is my attempt to give a very broad dealing with what man has done. You may find weaknesses in the presentation, but I wanted to give somewhat of a picture of what men have done to try to deal with the problem of evil.

Page 4: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

• Before we consider this question, let’s look at what man has attempted to do.

• Though mankind forfeited the earth to Satan in the Garden of Eden II, and though he joined Satan in renouncing his allegiance to God, Satan didn’t succeed in getting man to pledge allegiance to him, either (at first).

• But he did succeed in subjugating man through fear of bodily harm and death.

• And man himself tried all sorts of ways to make himself free from evil and sin.

• The most common way was to make an idol that substituted for God and represented evil angelic beings.

• They then worshipped those idols and set up systems of religion connected to those idols thus worshiping Satan.

Page 5: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

• We can see all around us evidence of man’s attempt to rid himself of sin and gain immortality.

• One of the earliest religions was a system of idols which required babies to be burned alive to the idol/god in order to attempt to gain protection of the god and prosperity and eventual eternal life for the followers.

• Another system of religion attempted to use philosophy to cause the followers to give up any hope of anything but death, but if you lived a good enough life, or if you still needed to burn sins off your spirit, it would be re-born as someone else to suffer and burn off more sins until one’s spirit reached a point of no longer having sin on the spirit and then it would go into a state of total cessation of being when it would cease being re-born.

Page 6: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

• Still other religions offered no hope for eternal life, but concentrated on living in this life with peace and a measure of pleasure.

• One of the common ideas of these religions was that of having peace, comfort and prosperity in this life.

• For the most part this was achieved by living a good life and not doing anything bad or having evil thoughts.

• To achieve this peace, some of them practiced self-denial of all pleasure in order to “purify” themselves.

• Others practiced TM to keep their minds from having evil thoughts.

• And still others have resorted to trying to obey a lot of moral rules and laws.

Page 7: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

• Finally, there are those religions that taught and still teach that each of us is on our way to becoming a god as the next step in our development.

• We can see, then, that men have had a variety of ways to try to handle the problem of evil.

• None of them answer the main problem: our separation from the God who created us and who alone can give us eternal life and free us from sin.

Page 8: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

What can man do about this problem?•The answer is quite simple – nothing in himself.•When Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit with it’s penalty of death, they brought sin and death into the human race.Like a hereditary defect or disease that is passed

down from generation to generation, the sin nature and death passed down to you and me, and everyone else.

We’re all destined to die physically. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but

after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)Heb 9:27 มีขอ้กำหนดสำหรบัมนุษย์ไว้แล้วว่จะตยครัง้เดียวและหลังจกนัน้ก็จะมีกรพพิกษฉันใด

Page 9: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

…since by man came death… (1 Corinthians 15:21a) เพระว่ควมตยได้อุบติัขึน้เพระมนุษย์คน

หน่ึงเป็นเหตุฉันใด …as in Adam all die…(1 Corinthians 15:22a) เพระว่คนท้ังปวงต้องตยเก่ียวเน่ืองกับอดัม

ฉันใด Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,

and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:12)

Page 10: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

There is our situation.• Sin came into the world through Adam , with its

penalty of physical death for everyone. • And then sin has been passed down to us with its

penalty of physical death.• And we can’t do anything to stop it from

happening.• The sin is on our spirits and souls and we can’t get

rid of it no matter what we try. • And the sad thing is we will continue to sin more

and more, adding to our condemnation. So far, I’ve only dealt with the immediate result of sin (although it may take from 70-120 years to happen) and that’s physical death.

Page 11: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

There’s another death that is more terrible and each soul with sin on it is destined for that death, too.• This death is to be thrown into the lake of fire (we

call it hell) forever.• Because nothing with sin on it can enter into heaven

in God’s presence.God’s holiness would destroy us if we entered

into His presence with just one sin on our soul. It’s his mercy that we are kept out of His

presence while we have sin on our souls. His justice demands the penalty of the Lake of

Fire for that one sin.• Therefore, our souls and spirits (which are the real

us) cannot enter into heaven but are destined for the Lake of Fire in our natural sinful condition.

Page 12: 0002 origin of evil what can man do about it 2

• That’s the law; that’s strict justice which can never be administered with mercy.

• We’re in a lot of trouble, but there is a solution in what God has done about the problem of evil.

• We’ll look more into detail about that in the next lesson. But we don’t have to be condemned to the Lake of Fire.

• God took the punishment for us in the crucifixion of His only begotten Son to pay for all our sins and to clean our souls and spirits of the sins that were on them from the past.

• We have to only ask God to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness and for Jesus to be our Savior and Lord.

• John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

• John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

• 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
