CHILLY UPSET BID FALLS SHORTPROVO, Utah -- (Sept. 23, 2000) UNLV (1-2) dropped its fifth-straight conference opener by falling10-7 in a rainy defensive battle with BYU (2-3). The 60,191 at Cougar Stadium and viewers across theESPN Regional network saw BYU take an early lead and barely hold on during a Rebel rally. With gametimetemperatures dipping below 40 degrees, BYU’s Brian McDonald ran in a 25-yard touchdown and OwenPochman booted a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Cougars, however, were foiled by a 66-yardpunt by Ray Cheetany in a game that became dominated by field position. The closest anyone came toscoring in the next two quarters came on a 72-yard run by UNLV QB Jason Thomas (the longest for theschool since 1989) to the BYU 13. A subsequent field goal attempt, however, was blocked and the gameremained 10-0 into the fourth quarter. Thomas, who was under intense pressure all day from a nearlyconstant Cougar blitz, finally hit another big play with a 49-yard strike to Troy Mason that led to Thomas takingit in from a yard out. Down 10-7, UNLV continued its rally by forcing a BYU punt and then rolling down fieldon two big pass plays to face first down at the Cougar 25 with under five minutes remaining. The BYUdefense, however, rallied to stuff a Jeremi Rudolph run, then sack Thomas for five- and 13-yard losses toturn a sure field-goal attempt into a punt. BYU then simply ran out the remaining 2:40 to earn the victory.Thomas, who was sacked four times but still led the team in rushing with 51 net yards, earned his first 200-yard passing day by finishing 11-17 for 202 yards and one pick. Mason hauled in five balls for 102 yards -- his first career century-mark game -- and Cheetany had a huge game by averaging 45.5 yards on eightkicks. The Cougars, who struggled to pass the ball (157 yards), were led by Luke Staley’s 167 yards on28 carries. The UNLV defense, which shut out its opponent for seven of its last eight quarters, had oneinterception and recorded five sacks, including two each by James Sunia and Anton Pelepoi.

ARIZONA ROMPS REBELS IN FIRST-EVER MEETINGTUCSON, Ariz. -- (Sept. 22, 2001) UNLV became the first college team underJohn Robinson to begin a season 0-3 as it was dominated by Pac-10 Conference member Arizona (3-0)in both teams’ first game since the terrorist attacks hit the U.S. Wildcat QB Jason Johnson was sharp whilethrowing for 247 yards and three scores in front of 47,031 at Arizona Stadium. After UA scored first and wasdriving, UNLV tied things as Ahmad Briggs picked up a fumble and ran it in 30 yards for the team’s firstdefensive score of the season. UNLV showed life after blocking a Wildcat field goal attempt and driving to theArizona 24. Rebel PK Dillon Pieffer, however, missed his third consecutive FGA of the season and UNLVnever challenged again as the Cats built a 24-7 lead capped off by an 80-yard TD run by Tremaine Coxbefore halftime. The lead bulged to as high as 31-7 before UNLV scored its only two offensive touchdownson a Joe Haro 7-yard run and a Bobby Nero 15-yard scoring catch from Kurt Nantkes, who was makinghis collegiate debut in relief of Jason Thomas. Arizona’s final score came via a 40-yard fumble return for aTD as UNLV’s all-time record vs. Pac-10 teams fell to 3-8

In a historic move for the team, school and entire Las VegasValley, famed football coach John Robinson was hired as the eighthhead coach in UNLV history on Dec. 3, 1998.

Bringing instant credibility to a program that was staring at a moveinto the newly formed Mountain West Conference, Robinson came to town as one of college football’smost successful and recognizable figures and the former national champion has done nothing whileleading the Rebels to tarnish his winning image. In fact, Robinson is so committed to the university thatearlier this year he signed a five-year contract extension through the 2005 season and then agreedto add the duties of athletics director beginning on Jan. 1, 2002.

Still passionate about the game he teaches, Robinson’s stunning move to the desert and subse-quent courting of Southern Nevada’s loyalties has rapidly mined a football spirit not before seen in theCity of Lights. What’s more, the ramifications of Robinson taking the Rebels’ reigns are apparent notjust locally, but also transcend beyond the West and into the highest reaches of the national collegefootball scene.

“My goal is to keep John Robinson for life,” UNLV President Carol C. Harter said this summer.“If at the end of five years, he wants to continue coaching, he can have a new contract.”

Robinson, 66, is the nation’s 10th-winningest active coach with a career record of 115-51-4, fora percentage of .688. In addition, his 8-1 bowl record gives him a higher winning percentage in thepostseason (.889) than any college coach in history with a minimum of bowl eight games.

Robinson, who earned his 100th career victory at the University of Southern California in 1997with a win vs. UNLV, had two stints with the Trojans. He first became head coach in 1976 and spentseven years leading Troy. His teams won 82 percent of their games (67-14-2) in his original run, averaging nearly 10 victories a year. In fact, Robinson tied a NCAA record for most wins by a first-year head coach after his team went 11-1 and earned a Rose Bowl berth.

He won the 1978 national championship with a 12-1 mark (USC was ranked No. 2 in both 1976and ’79), led the Trojans to three Pac-10 titles and guided Troy to five postseason bowls. Also, from1978 through 1980, USC posted a school-record 28-game unbeaten streak.

Along the way, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners (running backs Charles White in1979 and Marcus Allen in 1981) and a Lombardi Award honoree (guard Brad Budde in 1979).Also, Robinson was named National Coach of the Year in 1979 following an 11-0-1 campaign.

After spending four months as USC’s senior vice president for university relations, Robinson headed to the NFL to take over the Los Angeles Rams. Hisstint in pro ball produced the most victories (79) in Rams history. During his nine years with the club (1983-91), he reached the playoffs six times and twiceadvanced to the NFC championship game (1985 & ’89).

He spent 1992 as a television analyst before returning to USC for the 1993 season. His second term at Troy lasted until 1997 and featured three more bowlvictories, including the Rose Bowl title over Northwestern following the 1995 season that improved his career record in the Grand Daddy of Them All to asparkling 4-0. Robinson began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Oregon, for 12 seasons (1960-71). He moved to USC

to direct the school’s offense for three years (1972-74) before serving as the backfieldcoach for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in 1975 under childhood friend John Madden.Considered an expert on the running game, Robinson has produced four NFLrushing champions and two NCAA rushing leaders. Overall, he has tutored 24 firstteam All-Americans, 22 NFL first-round selections and 87 NFL draft picks.

Born on July 25, 1935, Robinson grew up in Daly City, Calif., and starred infootball and baseball at Serra High School San Mateo. He then lettered as an end forOregon when the Ducks won the 1957 Pacific Coast Conference title and played inthe Rose Bowl. He received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1958.

Robinson and wife, Linda, have six grown children: daughters Teresa, Lynn,Karilyn and Beth and sons David and Christopher. The family also includes eightgrandchildren.

“We’re excited about living here,” Robinson said of his home in the Silver State.“The fun of coaching is as enjoyable at UNLV as it was with the Los Angeles Rams orUSC. I’m having as good a time now as I’ve had in my life.”

Last season, senior strong safety RandyBlack became his school’s all-time tackleleader with 294 in four years. Now, one ofBlack’s former teammates looks to pushthat total down to No. 2 on the list. Blackwas battling linebacker James Sunia tosee who would finish 2000 as the UNLVTakedown King before Sunia suffered aseason-ending knee injury in Game Five. After missing eight games, including theLas Vegas Bowl, Sunia re-injured hisACL/MCL just before spring practice kickedoff and the Hawaii native was back in re-habilitation mode. Sunia gradually madehis way back into practice and played forthe first time in 11 games last week at Ari-zona. His four tackles vs. the Wildcatsmoved Sunia up one spot into a tie withformer teammate Jerrad Pierucci in eighthplace on the all-time list. After leading theteam in tackles both of his first two sea-sons, Sunia was averaging 10.6takedowns per game. However, after reg-istering just 26 tackles last fall, Sunia needs31 tackles in his final eight games to breakBlack’s record.

RRRRREBELAEBELAEBELAEBELAEBELATIONSTIONSTIONSTIONSTIONSON THE OFFENSIVE: Eight Rebels have caught at least one pass through three games ... Despitewinning neither game, UNLV outgained both of its first two opponents in 2001 (298-114 at Arkansas and453-411 vs. Northwestern) ... Sophomore WR Michael Johnson set a Mountain West Conference recordwith 174 yards on a career-high eight receptions vs. Northwestern. It was the 14th-best receiving day inschool history and the most since Len Ware had 200 vs. SDSU in 1996 ... When RB Joe Haro gained 104yards on the ground vs. NU it marked UNLV’s 16th 100-yard rusher in the last 14 regular-season games... What’s more, Haro’s 131 yards and QB Jason Thomas’ 103 at Arkansas marked the fourth time in ninegames that the Rebels boasted two players over the century mark ... A week after UNLV threw for thesecond-least yards in school history with 40 vs. the Razorbacks, Thomas rebounded to toss for a career-high 304 yards and two touchdowns vs. the Wildcats. It marked the first 300-yard game for a UNLVquarterback since Jon Denton threw for 401 vs. San Jose State in 1997 ... The Rebels are a stunning 0-7 on fourth-down attempts this fall after being 7-13 on such plays a year ago.FOR THE DEFENSE: With the return of senior MLB James Sunia, senior Scott Parkhurst, whostarted the first two games at strongside linebacker, moved back to the defensive line in time for the Arizonagame while freshman Adam Seward moves over to back up LaMar Owens at SLB ... UNLV held Arkansasto only 114 yards in Game One, which broke the school record of 131 yards by Cal State Fullerton in 1983... The Rebels held their opponent to under 200 yards rushing for the 12th consecutive game vs. Arizona... Ahmad Briggs picked up a fumble on a botched option play at Arizona and returned it 30 yards forUNLV’s first defensive TD of the year ... Thanks to a Anton Palepoi pass deflection, Shanga Wilsonhauled in his first career interception at Arkansas, which led to UNLV’s only touchdown.SPECIAL (TEAMS) DELIVERY: At Arizona, Anton Palepoi gave the team its second blocked fieldgoal attempt in the last four regular-season games ... UNLV ranks fourth in the nation in kickoff returnaverage with 34.78 and the Rebels’ nine attempts are the most among the top-10-ranked teams ... Fresh-man Dominique Dorsey is averaging 55 yards on three kickoff returns but needed one more return to beeligible for the MWC and NCAA rankings. His 87-yard return on his first attempt vs. NU was the fourth-longest in UNLV history and fifth-longest in MWC history ... Freshman Gary Cook, who was the team’sfourth different starting punter in as many season openers (1998: Joe Kristosik, 1999: Ryan McDonald,2000: Ray Cheetany), turned in his best day at Arizona when he earned a career-long 51 yarder and alsoplaced five of nine boots inside the opponent’s 20 ... UNLV made its first field goal attempt of the season in thefirst quarter at Arkansas but PK Dillon Pieffer has since missed all three attempts.

T T T T THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTHE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTHE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTHE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTHE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHTFreshman Dominique Dorsey has made a big splash in his collegiate debut season. In Game Two vs.Northwestern, he ran for 18 yards on his first career rush and then took his first kickoff return 87 yards. AtArizona in Game Three, Dorsey returned a kick 55 yards and rushed for 24 yards on seven carries.Dorsey, however, is not the only Rebel rookie to already make an impact in 2001. WR Earvin Johnsonearned his first catch vs. NU while Gary Cook has earned the team’s starting punting job. On defense, redshirt LB Adam Seward has 11 tackles and redshirt DB Jamaal Brimmer has seven. The team’s oldestrookie, 21-year-old QB Kurt Nantkes, made his collegiate debut in Tucson and completed 2 of 3 attemptsfor 33 yards, including his first touchdown pass on a 15-yard dart to Bobby Nero.

J J J J JERSEY JOEERSEY JOEERSEY JOEERSEY JOEERSEY JOEUNLV junior Jersey Joe Haro has burst into the starting tailback spot after a long journey back and forthacross the line of scrimmage. An all-state performer out of Clifton, N.J., Haro joined the Rebels in 1998 andearned a medical hardship after rushing for four yards on two carries. He carried the ball only eight timesin 1999 but still managed to be his team’s leading rusher vs. BYU with 59 yards on just four carries. With asenior logjam at the UNLV tailback spot in 2000, Haro moved to defensive back but fractured his right fibulain Game Two and missed the remainder of the season. Haro moved back to offense during bowl-gamepractices last December and earned the No. 2 tailback spot heading into the season opener. During halftimeat Arkansas, Haro had five carries for zero yards, but then Jersey Joe exploded to finish with a game-high131 yards on 24 total carries. Starting his first game vs. Northwestern the following week, Haro proved hisgutty rushing style was no fluke as he gained 104 yards on 25 carries, including his first career touchdownrun of 10 yards. He again led his team in rushing with 71 yards on 15 carries and a score at Arizona inGame Three. Haro currently ranks 29th in the nation and fifth in the MWC with 102.0 yards per game.

REBELS LET HOGS OFF HOOKLITTLE ROCK -- (Aug. 30, 2001) Despite holding its opponent to record-lowoffensive numbers, UNLV (0-1) allowed Arkansas (1-0) to score a game-winninglast-minute touchdown and capture a 14-10 victory in the season opener for both schools. Playing itsearliest game in history, UNLV took on the Hogs in a rematch of last season’s Las Vegas Bowl, which theRebels won 31-14. UNLV fell to 17-17 all time in season openers and just 4-12 in lid lifters away from home.Playing on ESPN for the first time since 1994, the Rebels fell to 5-3 in Thursday games. The Razorbackssnapped UNLV’s four-game losing streak despite earning its first first down other than by penalty midway inthe fourth quarter. Set up by a 39-yard punt return by Troy Mason, Dillon Pieffer opened the scoring witha 27-yard field gaol in the first quarter. The Rebels then converted an interception into a six-yard touchdownshuttle pass from Jason Thomas to Jabari Johnson. Arkansas finally got on the board in the third quarterwith a 45-yard interception return for a score to make it 10-7. UNLV, wasted a 53-yard run by Thomas andthen a 68-yard scamper by Joe Haro by missing two 29-yard field-goal attempts that would have iced thegame. Still leading by three with under two minutes remaining, just-inserted UNLV punter Ryan McDonaldbobbled a snap and was tackled for 10-yard loss at his own 49. With no timeouts remaining, UA quarterbackRyan Sorahan completed two fourth-down pass attempts and then hit Richard Smith for 23 yards beforeCedric Cobbs romped in from a yard out for the improbable winning score. Haro led all rushers with 131yards on 24 carries while Thomas netted 103 for his third career century-mark game. JT struggled throughthe air, however, completing a school-record low four passes in 16 attempts for 40 yards and threeinterceptions. The hosts, who were 0-15 on third down, managed only five total first downs and earned just26 yards on 25 attempts en route to being out-gained in total yards, 298-114.

LAS VEGAS -- (Sept. 7, 2001) UNLV (0-2) had a big hand in snapping its own six-game home winning streak as multiple Rebel mistakes helped 16th-ranked Northwest-ern (1-0) win 37-28 in front of 26,721 fans and a ESPN national audience. Playing on aFriday for the first time since 1979, UNLV fell to 22-12 in home openers as it faced the highest-ranked teamto come to Sam Boyd Stadium since No. 8 Kansas State in 1994. In a matchup between two preseasonHeisman Trophy candidates in NU running back Damien Anderson and UNLV quarterback JasonThomas, it was the Wildcats’ signal-caller, Zak Kustok, who instead dominated the game by rushing forthree touchdowns and throwing for two more. A short Kustok TD opened the scoring but the extra-pointattempt failed. UNLV’s defense forced Anderson’s first fumble in 319 carries and Thomas’ three-yardscoring dive gave his team a 7-6 lead. UNLV threatened for more points but failed on a fourth-down attemptat the NU 24. The Cats quickly got in position to kick a 45-yard field goal to regain the lead and themomentum heading into halftime. NU flew down field to open the third and made it 16-7. UNLV’s Joe Haroran for a 10-yard TD to make it 16-14. The Cats later intercepted Thomas and converted it into a 23-14lead. The Rebels tried to answer but Haro fumbled at the NU 23 while attempting to dive for a first down. Afterreturning the turnover 45 yards, Kustok hit Sam Simmons, who finished with 161 yards on 11 catches, foran 18-yard TD and a 30-14 lead. UNLV did not quit, however, as Thomas launched a 42-yard scoringpass to Michael Johnson. The Rebel defense held, but shaky special teams bit UNLV for the secondstraight week as punter Gary Cook couldn’t right a bad snap and was tackled at his own 42. NU convertedthe miscue into a 37-22 lead. Freshman Dominique Dorsey took his first career kickoff return 87 yards butthe Rebels were turned away at the goal line. After forcing a NU punt, another Thomas Hail Mary attemptfound Johnson from 53 yards out to give UNLV hope. Lining up for the extra point, the Rebels looked to pullwithin eight with two minutes left before a bobbled conversion snap virtually ended the game. Despite sevenpasses dropped by Rebel receivers, Thomas threw for a career-high 304 yards. Johnson set a MountainWest Conference record with 174 yards on a career-high eight receptions while Troy Mason added 106yards receiving. On the ground, Haro posted his second straight century-mark game with 104 yards whileNU’s Anderson managed 113 yards on 28 carries.

UNLV made a big jump during both of headcoach John Robinson’s first two years oncampus. His first Rebel team shook off theeffects of the school’s first-ever winless sea-son in 1998 to win its first two games andfinish 3-8 for a +3 in the victory column. The three-game bump tied for the fifth-bestin college football in 1999. Then, last fall,UNLV’s march to an 8-5 finish, whichinlcluded a Las Vegas Bowl victory overArkansas, produced a five-game improve-ment. That effort tied for the third-best turn-around in Division I-A.
