CLEANING & MAINTENANCE Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets have good chemical resistance, at room temperature, to a variety of dilute organic and inorganic acids. Water, vegetable oils, solutions of natural salts, aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols are also included in this category. Some chemical substances may attack Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets. Among them are low molecular weight aldehydes and ethers, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, perchlorinated hydrocarbons, acetone and xylene. Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets are not compatible with alkalines, alkali salts, amines and high ozone concentrations.

Cleaning For small areas:

• Rinse the sheet with lukewarm water. • Wash the sheets with a solution of mild soap or household detergent and lukewarm water, using

a soft cloth or a sponge in one direction only to loosen any dirt and grime. • Rinse with cold water and dry with a soft cloth in one direction only to prevent water spotting. • To remove labels, stickers etc, the use of kerosene, neptha or white spirits is generally effective.

Afterwards, repeat steps 1 to 3 above. For large areas:

• Clean surface with a high pressure water and/or steam cleaner. (No more than 80oC) • Use of additives to the water should be restricted to those compatible with Danpalon®

polycarbonate sheets. • Recommended solvent cleaners are: White Spirit, Petroleum Ether (BP65), Hexane and

Heptane. When cleaning bent Danpalon® sheets, it is recommended to try the solvent first on a bent sample of the material for a few hours, if no visible discolouration has occurred apply the solvent on the whole area.

Important Never use abrasive or highly alkaline cleaners on Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets. Cleaners and solvent generally recommended for use on polycarbonate are not necessarily compatible with the UV Protected surface of the Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets. Do not use either BUTYL CELLOSOLVE or ISOPROPANOL on the UV protected surface of Danpalon® polycarbonate sheets. Never scrub with brushes, steel wool or other abrasive a material. Maintenance For maintenance purposes ‘walking boards’ should be used across the connectors. The boards themselves should be in accordance with Australian OH&S Standards and should be used according to OH&S legislative guidelines. Precautions that need to be identified would come from an OH&S consultant. Workcover should be able to assist. An important aspect is the slope of the roof. Walk boards should not slide off the roof.

Danpalon Multicell Ice Feature Wall With Allen Jack + Cottier’s recent change of brand and image, changing the character of our work environment was the next logical step. Allen Jack + Cottier have always viewed adaptive reuse of buildings as one of the best ways to be environmentally sustainable. The warehouse environment dictated many of the design and space ideas, and the company embraced the opportunity to design a sustainable office space that would promote ESD as an affordable and achievable option. Creating a studio environment was also a key objective. The changing culture of the firm meant that the new office space would have to encourage the fresh energy and enthusiasm of its staff. With staff spread over two levels a central staircase connected the two floors as well as providing an opportunity for spontaneous meetings.

ASHFIELD AQUATIC CENTRE

With the help of the new Multicell Danpalon glazing system from Solarspace, the Ashfield Aquatic Centre has achieved a very energy efficient environment.

It has gained the appreciation and acceptance of architects and experts in natural lighting systems throughout the world.

The Opal coloured Danpalon was chosen to provide the indoor pool environments with unequalled natural daylight.

`The Opal Multicell disperses the natural light in such a fragmented manner that shadows at pool concourse level are not evident. The light dispersion is so good that even on a bright day the sun is not easily definable. The centre requires no artificial lighting during daylight hours and hence energy savings. A magnificent and unique ambience and feeling of space and light fills the indoor volumes of this aquatic hall. This effect will be particularly appreciated during the winter months, ` said Stephen.

Danpalon allows the infra red rays to penetrate, thus providing the capacity for solar heat gain during the colder months of the year.

This will greatly assist the mechanical air handling systems and again provide further energy savings.

COWRA AQUATIC CENTRE

With the help of the Multicell Danpalon glazing system from Solarspace, the Cowra Aquatic Centre has demonstrated it is an ideal glazing solution that offers a comfortable natural lighting solution and a UV safe environment. The Danpalon system was also selected for its lightweight, durability and corrosive resistant properties said Karen Gay of Design West. Design West was appointed Architects for the Design of the Cowra Swimming Pool facilities redevelopment by Cowra Shire Council and the centre was opened in late September 2003. The brief for the new building called for a structure that would not become dated and last for at least 50 years. The modern curved structure of the main roof has an uninterrupted 26 metre span. Translucent aqua coloured Danpalon 16mm panels coupled with white structural steel provide a light and airy space within the main pool enclosure, and the flexibility of the Danpalon system is perfectly suited to the creation of the uninterrupted dome roof. Danpalons patented connection system means impact compliance with AS1562.3, thus eliminating the requirement for safety mesh under roofs over 3.0m above ground and offering a safe problem free solution.

GREYSTANES DOCUMENT STORAGE

Interrupting a sea of grey storage and distribution warehouses in Greystanes Park East is the Recall Storage Facility, designed to contain six million A3cardboard bar-coded archive boxes. The building has a clear operational program; trucks enter the secure, Danpalon-clad transport area to deliver A3 boxes that are unloaded into the adjacent staging area for delivery to the resource centre for coding, and final transfer to the warehouse by a semi-automated racking system. It conforms to the conventional use of colourbond sheeting above a precast dado line, yet, with no extra cost, the facility gained a highly recognisable identity through the more adventurous use of Danpalon Multicell façade.

The Danpalon was specially produced with a UV Barrier incorporated into the opposite side to normal to allow reverse installation. The result is a flush glazed surface with no visual interruptions allowing a comfortable level of diffused light into the building. Danpalon Multicell has a standing seam connection method with a snap on connector. Normally this clips on the outside but on this project they were attached to the horizontal girts and then the sheets were snapped in from the outside. Danpalon Multicell also offers improved rigidity, allowing for increased spanning capabilities and its strength is supported by a ten year hail damage and discoloration guarantee.

The Danpalon Multicell façade breaks down the impenetrable steel facades in the area by allowing an interaction of light and privacy along the staging and processing areas. It allows natural light to enter the building and provides a textural platform to further enhance the building’s identity with the application of white pergraphic numbers. At night, these areas are lit internally and glow in the

INVERELL COUNCIL WINS DESIGN AWARD

In Inverell temperatures can drop to -50 C and the effective swimming season is minimal.

Inverell Shire Council wanted to provide a facility to the community that would allow the development of competitive sports and to promote water activities to swimming clubs and schools all year around.

Tim Russell of Inverell Shire Council said a pool cover not only protects patrons but also extends the usage of the pool during the colder months thus extending the utilisation of the Shires asset.

Funding to cover the entire 50m pool was not available so to finance the project the state government offered Inverell Council a grant on the basis of an innovative design concept.

This featured a 25m x 30m laminated timber structure covering the shallow half of the pool incorporating a dividing boom at the midway point in the water.

Installation of the dividing boom can be achieved while the pool is full, eliminating the need to empty the pool and avoiding any additional maintenance with tiles popping off.

This design enabled a more cost-effective structure and significant savings on pool heating costs as the shallow end of the pool represents 30% of the total water volume.

In summer there is a need to ensure adequate temperature control. The curved design incorporates a central barrel vault where any excessive heat can be easily controlled through the hotter months.

Nowhere is skin more exposed to the dangerous effects of ultra-violet radiation than in a pool and nothing provides a stronger sunscreen than Danpalon.

JUNEE AQUATIC CENTRE

With the help of the new Multicell Danpalon glazing system from Solarspace, the Junee Community Leisure Centre has achieved a very energy efficient environment.

Stephen Johansson of The Facility Design Group recognised the potential of a new concept using Danpalon for aquatic centres with thermal efficiencies in mind.

Danpalon Multicell has a standing seam connection method with a snap on connector and concealed stainless steel retention clips.

This superior fixing method provides a total roof structure that has absolutely no thermal bridging. Thermal bridging occurs with all conventional surface fixed roofing materials where the roof is fastened to the supporting structure with screws.

In cold conditions this allows for thermal bridging of the outdoor cold through to the inside warmer and generally moist environment causing condensation on the ends of the screws.

Danpalons patented connection system also means impact compliance with AS1562.3, thus eliminating the requirement for safety mesh under the roof offering a safe problem free solution. Nowhere is skin more exposed to the dangerous effects of ultra-violet radiation than in a pool and nothing provides a stronger sunscreen than Danpalon. Danpalon is manufactured with a co-extruded UV Barrier that blocks more than 99.9% of the harmful rays as tested by the `Skin Cancer Research Foundation`.

LAKE AINSWORTH SPORT AND RECREATION HALL

The brief from the Australian Government’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation required a multi-purpose recreation hall to be used for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, general recreation and theatrical performances. For Allen Jack+Cottier the challenge was to create a building that would simultaneously inspire its users, respect its site, work efficiently in terms of both environment and energy conservation and meet tight budget constraints.

Inspired by the famous London Crystal Palace designed by Joseph Paxton in 1851, the hall is based on the concept of a glass palace. Glass palaces provide wonderful internal light qualities, as well as shelter from the elements in temperate climates, but do not work in tropical climates without mechanical cooling and shading. Allen Jack+Cottier`s light box design overcomes that issue with the use of a four-wall, Danpalon Heatstop polycarbonate wall which transfers only 1% heat. The design allows for a natural ventilation system using low-level louvres and high-level wind turbines to provide fresh air and cooling. Exhaustive on-site and environmental research, coupled with a lateral approach to use of materials, proved to be the keys to Allen Jack+Cottier`s inspired design. Detailed modelling showed that a transparent, insulating UV-resistant and cost-effective material could be used on a steel frame to add lightness and resilience to the structure. The design result: three boxes where the volume of activity is enclosed in a dramatic luminescent tube-like expanse, which can be closed off at either end and reacts to outside weather conditions through a series of louvres and roof vents. At night, when the space can be transformed into a theatre, it glows like a lantern in the landscape.

WOLLONDILLY COMMUNITY LEISURE CENTRE

With the help of the new Multicell Danpalon glazing system from Solarspace, the Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre has achieved a very energy efficient environment. Stephen Johansson of The Facility Design Group recognised the potential of a new concept using Danpalon for aquatic centres with thermal efficiencies in mind. Typically these types of facilities would have a roof configuration consisting of acoustic metal, safety mesh, a vapour barrier, insulation and a profiled steel roof. Instead Danpalon 10mm Multicell was used which greatly simplified the roof construction. All the structure is seen and can be monitored visually. There are no hidden ceiling zones that can attract aggressive moisture and corrode the building structure. Danpalon Multicell has a standing seam connection method with a snap on connector and concealed stainless steel retention clips. This superior fixing method provides a total roof structure that has absolutely no thermal bridging.
