    Keith, Rogcr and Chesh returned t o t he Richmond a rea of Swaledale, headed f o r Three Neuks Pot, Various shakeholes were studied, one near a ruined cottage was a small stream-sink, but a l l mere of no'promise,

    Three N e w was then descended, A t t h e top of t he p i tch , noted l a s t year, work began on c lea r ing boulders, Keith opened a way i n t o t he top of the p i tch and continued dom under an unstable boul8er. While he was clearing rocks from under t h i s t o get i n to t he rift, t he boulder began t o s l i p . Vith no wish t o be converted in to a compressed carcass,

    ' Keith movea rapidly from underneath, However, t he boulder was very determined ( i t may have had K. 11cBride writeen on i t ) and sl ipped

    again, trapping Keith by t h e leg, Even worse, it began t o drag him down the pi tch, Fortunately, he was on a l i f e l i n e , and with some de- termined and f r a n t i c pu l l ing he nas f reed,

    A crawl I n a 3 f t high passage followed, After about 40ft t he f l oo r trench became too lon due t o an excess of r a t h f r good formations, Fortunately, a bedding i n the roof provided a nay over t he top t o t he detriment of sorxc excellent formations. I t was soon possible t o drop i n t o t he f l oo r channel again and crairil i n t o a chmber.

    This was a small jo int aven about 12 f t high with a pool on t he f l o o r and a foot of mud under t ha t , To the l e f t , a bedding a f e w inches high led o f f through which could be heard the stream.

    The main way was up s tcps of 4 f t and 2 H t i n a l o f t high f i s sure , This led i n t o an ascending passage 8 f t h i& which soon divided and imniediatcly encl-cd i n cla7r and bould chancz of progress, On the m y out s large dry ie south s ide of the roof bedding. This contained 3

    Despite a report i n another club's newsletter t ha t a 30ft. "super severe" pitch had been found i n Low Eglin's our heroic surveyors were not perturbed. They dismissed the report as impossible rubbish - a l i n e nl~ich just t h i s l a s t week proved t o be right. Nothing new had been found. The club had apparently crawled alonz a known oxbow'and arrived a t the top of an 8f t . drop back in to the s t r c m passage1

Yordas Pot. highcr up i n the wood, was looked a t as was the entrance t o Batty Ca,ve before Slanting Cave was locat?d. Rogcr and Chesh went down ss far as a pool mhich w a s rather wet fo r nonnal gear.

    After going t o Dentdale a quick trip was made into the main cham- ber of Ibbeth Pe r i l Cave. This i s a very impressive blockfall chanber with the River Dce entering from a short but large r iver passage. There' a re some superb black and white s t a l f lons i n one corner of the chamber, which is well worth v i s i t i n g f o r photographs.

    2nd, John and Chesh noticed a draughting hole against a sol id side i n one of the many shakes. Some muck was rmovcd and work continued the . following day. Six fee t of dcpth'was gained but a f loor mas now vis ib le i n one of several 6" vide joints. It was apparent tha t a b ig d ig mould be needed t o make any progress and the hole was f i l l e d in.

    The domstrem areaaof Nev Goyden was studied by Keith and Tony on Nond8.y. 9th i n m effor t t o f ind mything nhich midit give a nay past the present f i n a l svrmp. On t 3 b domstrsam side of the sump near tho Planet- arium a translucent t rout , about .5l' long, 1:as seen i n a large, ' s t i l l pool off t o tlio l e f t of the main sump. Thou* apparently blind, the t rout did have eyes and was at t racted by the l ight of a pitlamp and was eventually induced t o come ri&t t o the edge of the pool &ere it could be studied, Its insides, a l l red and balck, could bc clear ly seen throu* i t s skin and sudden noisc or movement had l i t t l e effect on it. Stonss dropped i n the pool did not disturb it u n t i l they were dropped within an inch or tmo of i t s t a i l which made it dart t o the side of the pool only t o crs?p slowly forward again t o thc li&t. Apart f ron t h i s , nothing of note was seen. V

    Tony climbod an aven just a t the s t a r t of Hardy Pools Passage and af tc r nearly peeling off about 15ft UJI when a hand-hold came away de- clined t o tackle the next 20ft section. A t thn top, a passage appeared t o go off but t h i s could Bust h&v& easi ly have been a ledge. Tlie t o t a l height of the aven was about 60ft,

Keith v is i ted the Dry $4.11 area and then went over t o the Big Sink which wao a largo lake - the water having backed up rxther badly,

    After about two hours d iming thrc xed roclF fragnents and clay a hole about 6 f t de2p had be-:n dug without any sign of a breakthrough. It was then r i t ha t pleared t o Fe a crack in one wall was actual ly one ? a f r e ling stone about 1 C" square and about 4 f t high, It Lso til tha t anp fur ther excavation a t the 'case of the oolumn would allow the whole thing to tilt ar" '---'n the ( The excavation was therefore abandoned.

    A fur ther glance a t the southern chanber Ijvrurl-Jneu cllat t h e ~ t t rs ineuff icient room to excavate properly and that the whole place i s very unstable. The present roof i s t i l t e d a t an angle of 45 degrees but the ca l c i t e deposit on i t had formed when i t had been horizontal. It appears tha t fur ther work WC d i f f i c u l t and probr ,t very revard5ng.
