SPECIFICATION AND APPLICATION OF SINGLE AND DOUBLE DIRECTION

THRUST BALL BEARINGS

Mining Industry

Mining operations are important to the improvement and preservation of our daily living, providing resources used to create electricity, roads, and communities. The equipment used is varied and can be operated con-tinuously, 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. The mining process starts with the breaking up of the rock face and continues through the pro-cessing of the minerals, utilizing such technology as cutting equipment, screening machinery, stockpiling equipment and conveying equipment.

The operating environments for bearings in the mining industries can be extremely severe. One or more of the following can arise:

•  heavy loads combined with shock loads

•  light loads with high speed rotation

•  heavy loads with low speed rotation

In recent years, the papermaking industry has been making great strides by enhancing the speed and the width of coverage of papermaking machines with the objective of boosting productivity. To reduce the amount of down-time caused by unexpected problems, customers demand high reliability from the bearings that are used in papermaking machines.

OthersThe application example of the axial bearings includes the location of the blade and piston axial pump shafts, where the thrust forces are significant and cannot be handled with other bearings with predominant function of radial force handling. The application includes the devices with vertical shafts holding the rotating drums, e.g. the centrifugal drums, or use movement screws in variol lifting devices. The application also includes axial bearings for the location in machining devices, e.g. car-ousel table location or lathe quill headstock. We can also mention the application for the suspending the crane hooks.

Page 2: - World Bearing · ZKL produces single direction thrust ball bearings in standardized series 511, 512, 513 and 514 and double direction thrust ball bearings in standardized series

ZKL produces single direction thrust ball bearings in standardized series 511, 512, 513 and 514 and double direction thrust ball bearings in standardized series 522, 523 and 524, in sizes specified in the dimension tables.

The main dimensions comply with international dimension plan ISO 104.

ZKL also produces special thrust ball bearings, which differ from common standardized bearings in dimensions and design.

Single direction thrust ball bearingsSingle direction thrust ball bearings comprise of two flat rings where one side of the ring is commonly flat and the opposite side includes centric peripheral route for one line of balls with a cage. The com-position of 3 basic components (two rings and one cage with the balls) results in the bearing with the option of transferring the axial forces. The transferred axial force can only be applied to press both side flat rings to the balls in the ball route. The bearings are designed for transferring the axial forces applied in one axial direction, and cannot transfer radial forces. One of both flat rings is adjusted for assembly in the housing with accurate centring on the external diameter, the second flat ring has internal diameter adapted for centring which usually includes the location of the specific shaft which can freely pass further through the whole bearing. The ring is called shaft ring.

Double direction thrust ball bearingsDouble direction thrust ball bearings comprise of 5 basic com-ponents. They comprise of two sets of flat rings with the route and a cage with balls placed on both sides of the central flat ring with peripheral centric route for the ball lines on both fronts. The central ring, called shaft ring, includes construction larger than both edge rings with significantly smaller aperture than the side rings. The diameter reduction is enforced due to the requirement to receive sufficient area for the attachment ele-ments which define the solid position of the central ring on the shaft (thrust casing, mats, nuts, etc.).The bearings can transfer

axial load in both axial directions. Both side rings are adapted to the housing assembly identically to the single direction axial bearings, with accurate centring behind the external ring diameter. The character of variable force effects requires that the edge rings are attached in order to enable the axial pre-stressing providing the minimum required axial load of the bearing in transmission states, when force is at zero value.

Application of the thrust ball bearingsThe application example of the thrustbearings includes the location of the blade and piston axial pump shafts, where the thrust forces are significant and cannot be handled with other bearings with predomi-nant function of radial force handling. The application includes the devices with vertical shafts holding the rotating drums, e.g. the centrifugal drums, or use movement screws in various lifting devices. The application also includes axial bearings for the location in machining devices, e.g. carousel table loca-tion or lathe quill headstock. We can also mention the application for the suspending the crane hooks.

The specified examples cannot represent all options for utilizing the axial bearings depending on the specific individual locations.

Steel Industry

In the steel industry, bearings can be found in a vast range of plant equipment that is used in processes: from the storage yard for raw materials to the steelmaking, rolling and refining processes.

The operational environment for these bearings is unique to steelmaking, comprising steel dust, water and heat. In addition, the bearings may have to cope with heavy loads and vibration shock, operational speeds ranging from extremely slow through to high, coupled with rapid acceleration and deceleration.
