Explore Greenwich

The Royal Observatory is a great place to start exploring Greenwich World Heritage Site. Situated on the edge of Greenwich Park, from where there are amazing views, the Observatory is home to the Prime Meridian that was fixed here in 1884 and on top of the Observatory is the time-ball, which drops precisely at 1pm each day. This provided the first public time signal in the world in 1883 and Greenwich Mean Time is still used as a time reference worldwide. You can see the Prime Meridian and visit the Astronomy Centre free of charge. Also not to be missed are the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Naval College, both free to visit. There are ten free galleries to see at The National Maritime Museum and also a vast collection which includes artwork, maps and charts, memorabilia and thousands of other objects! The Old Royal Navy College, once a retirement home for sailors from the Royal Navy, is now used by the University of Greenwich and the Painted Hall is today one of the outstanding attractions of the college, which again is free to enter. If you have time you could also visit the Cutty Sark, the world famous and only remaining tea clipper that visited every major port in the world through the course of her working life. July Motown the Musical – Shaftsbury Theatre (3:00 pm show) This new West End production, with music and lyrics from the legendary Motown catalogue,

follows the brilliant career of Berry Gordy, the founder of the American record label. The story begins in 1983, on the evening of the 25

th anniversary celebration of Motown, with Berry Gordy

looking back on his career. After a few years working in a car factory in Detroit, he set his sights on founding a music-making factory and, with an 800 dollar loan from his family he turned his dreams into reality. Over the years, Gordy was responsible for discovering and launching the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Featuring a 16-piece orchestra, this fabulous show features over 50 Motown classics including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, I’ll Be There, Dancing In The Street, My Girl and For Once In My Life. £65.00 *

Beautiful - The Carol King Musical – Aldwych Theatre (2:30 pm show) Beautiful tells the inspiring story of Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of

a hit song-writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and finally becoming one of the most successful solo acts in pop music history. She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager, selling her first hit “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” when she was just seventeen. By the age of twenty she was writing for some of the biggest performers of the time, including The Drifters, The Shirelles, Bobby Vee, Aretha Franklin and The Monkeys and the show will include many of their top hits such as “You’ve Got A Friend”, “Take Good Care Of My Baby”, “Up On The Roof”, “Locomotion” and “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman”. However, her greatest challenge was to find her own true voice and step into the spotlight singing hits such as “It Might As Well Rain Until September”. £65.00 *

September Funny Girl – Savoy Theatre (2:30 pm show) Funny Girl, a bittersweet musical drama, promises to be the must-see musical of 2016, with the

brilliant, multi award-winning stage and screen star Sheridan Smith playing Fanny Brice in the leading role. Since opening on Broadway in 1964, the show has become synonymous with the original star Barbara Streisand but Sheridan Smith is a joy to watch as she makes Streisand’s role her own.

The first revival of this music classic tells the story of a talented star from Brooklyn whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her rise from music hall singer to Broadway star and follows her tempestuous and doomed relationship with her manager Nick Arnstein. Funny Girl exhibits real class and features some of the most iconic songs in film and theatre, including “People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”. Sheridan Smith as Funny Girl might make you cry but she will certainly also make you laugh so don’t miss out and book your tickets as soon as possible!

EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is recommended that each person travelling to France & Belgium has Travel Insurance and the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC entitles you to reduced cost, and sometimes free, health treatment under the same terms as people that live in the country you are visiting. The EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance as it may not cover all health costs and never covers repatriation costs in the event of illness or injury. You should therefore have travel insurance cover in addition to the EHIC as state-provided treatment in some EC Countries may not cover all treatments that you would receive free of charge from the N.H.S. Your Travel Insurance should also cover the loss or theft of personal items including items purchased during the excursion. Please ensure that you obtain and keep all receipts for purchases made during your trip.
