Objectives

The students are introduced to the contemporary Finnish society and culture as well as its historical development. After completing the course, students will have basic knowledge of Finland's societal, cultural and economic background from thematically various perspectives. In addition, the students will gain understanding of the cultural and industrial specificities of the Satakunta region. The aim of the course is to help the student make most of their exchange period by an increased understanding of Finnish customs, culture and contemporary issues.

To encourage students to use their verbal skills in a multitude of differing situations, from everyday situations to negotiations, presenting yourself, presenting information and listening.

Objectives: concentrating on presentations, phrases and vocabulary used in giving a presentation. Presentation details, such as: body language, voice, enthusiasm and dress. Presenting information such as figures, your place of work and your company. All students will deliver a presentation in the company of fellow students. Teacher and students will assess and give feedback on all given presentations. Aims: To build up students' self-confidence in using their spoken English and in coming to terms with speaking in front of an audience. Working on pronunciation, fluency and expressivity. Aims of the course are to encourage students in the area pronunciation, fluency, expressivity, accuracy and intelligibility.

ObjectivesThe main focus is on organizations and organizing as a part of their external environment. The student develops an understanding of how external environment influences organizations and how organizations can deal with the influences. After completing the course, the students know the current trends and changes in an organizational environment and develop an understanding of their effects and implications on management and leadership. By learning to reflect on the interrelationship between an organization and the society, the students develop a capacity to consider the implications of organizational decisions and actions on the wider environment. The course also develops students' teamwork capabilities and presentation skills.ContentThemes discussed on the course are globalization, networked society, media, contemporary economy, and management and leadership in a global context.

ObjectivesAfter taking the course, students understand the reasons for the rise of the service economies in the Western countries during the last few decades. The students are able to recognize the processes of servitization required for transforming manufacturing firms into the service business and to identify the essential tools through which manufacturers can transform into service providers. In addition, the students are able to apply the concepts of service logic and service management and to use current academic research and business practice both in the team assignments as well as in the exam. Moreover, the students are able to analyze and interpret the nature of the service profit logic and customer-focused outside-in management.

Content During the course the characteristics of services, service quality and new service development, as well as customer experiences are discussed as vital sources of growth and competitiveness for companies in diverse industries, both in theoretical and practical terms. The course literature offers comprehensive and up-to-date theoretical discussion of the principles of service business logic and the design and development of service offerings. In the practice-based workshops, students are able to apply the theoretical knowledge to real-life business assignments as well as assess other teams' solutions.

ObjectivesAfter completing the course the student understands what an entrepreneurial opportunity is, and from where and how entrepreneurial opportunities are discovered or created. The student is familiar with different ways to produce and identify entrepreneurial opportunities and knows how to assess their feasibility. The course gives the students experience-based knowledge of their own enterprising behavior and related strengths. After completing the course assignment the student knows how to develop and assess new entrepreneurial opportunities and how to develop their own enterprising behavior.

Content The course includes interactive lectures and individual and team assignments linked to identification of entrepreneurial opportunities. The course also includes e-lectures and related assignments on the e-learning platform. In the practical student assignment students will experiment with identifying new opportunities during one day assignment, and will present the results in an interactive seminar. ObjectivesThe aim of the course is to provide students opportunity to develop an individual and conscious understanding on a specific location and its institutional environment, emphasizing for instance on the cross-cultural dimension. After passing the course the student has a detailed understanding of a business context based on an analysis thereof and insights related to her/his main subject generated through experiential learning combined with written reflection. The more specific learning goals for the course will be agreed on an individual bases in a learning agreement.

Content Longer visits abroad or training in an international Finnish organisation offers students hands-on learning experiences about the geographic, economic and cultural environment of other countries. Culture is here understood broadly, including such diverse aspects as language, religion, traditions, material culture, and society at large. During this course the students can utilize this knowledge as a part of their main subject / minor subject studies and demonstrate their learning process as well as their increased cultural awareness.

Students taking the course during and based on their international student exchange period (minimum of a semester) will receive 2-6 ECTS credits (option 1). The length and depth of the report with respect to the credits earned will be agreed upon beforehand. Alternatively (option 2), the course can be completed during and based on a training/working period in a Finnish organisation, provided the organisation is involved in international operations/markets. Option 2 is 2 ECTS credits.

Teaching methods The student writes a learning diary and a reflective essay in which the experiences are combined with contemporary literature related to the chosen focus subject. The theme and related theoretical discussions will be agreed upon beforehand, in the learning agreement.

Objectives

The course gives an introduction to data mining and analysis of large datasets. For example,

networks and databases involve massive amounts of data, and mining of useful information from

data is an increasingly common challenge. By taking the course, the student learns the basic

principles and terminology of data mining, knows the commonly used algorithms, and recognizes the

typical challenges of processing large datasets. The course will introduce several application areas of

data mining, including the principles of web search engines, recommendation systems, and web

advertising.

Students will get acquainted to the technologies of Web-based GIS applications.

After completing the course the students are able to set up a Web GIS Server and a related

geodatabase solution, to publish geospatial Web services and implement Web applications using

these services on desktop as well as mobile platforms. Both open source tools and environments as

well as commercial solutions (offered by ESRI) will be introduced.

After completing this course, the student will be able to identify the general models of the

software engineering business. He will understand problems which are typical of a software

project and he will be able to apply basic practices to plan and manage a software project.

ObjectivesThe student recognizes entrepreneurship as a social phenomenon that is connected to both time and place. The student knows what social entrepreneurship means and how it compares to commercial entrepreneurship. The student understands how social challenges can be addressed with entrepreneurship. The student is able to identify different types of social enterprises and their challenges, and compare social entrepreneurship with corporate social responsibility. The student is able to identify a social problem and plan social entrepreneurship venture.

Content The literature will inform about the different ways to understand social entrepreneurship. The students analyse and report on one social enterprise of their choice. The students learn from corporate social responsibility and corporate philantrophy and compare them to social entrepreneurship. The students identify a social challenge of their choice and plan a social venture.

Teaching methods E-lectures 2 h, Independent work 18 h, Seminar 3 h, E-exercises 18 h.

The course consists of e-lectures and individual assignments on the e-learning platform. In the final seminar each student is asked to report on their learning based on the readings and the course themes will be discussed. Participation in the seminar is obligatory.

ObjectivesThe aim of the course is to provide students opportunity to develop an individual and conscious understanding on a specific location and its institutional environment, emphasizing for instance on the cross-cultural dimension. After passing the course the student has a detailed understanding of a business context based on an analysis thereof and insights related to her/his main subject generated through experiential learning combined with written reflection. The more specific learning goals for the course will be agreed on an individual bases in a learning agreement.

Content Longer visits abroad or training in an international Finnish organisation offers students hands-on learning experiences about the geographic, economic and cultural environment of other countries. Culture is here understood broadly, including such diverse aspects as language, religion, traditions, material culture, and society at large. During this course the students can utilize this knowledge as a part of their main subject / minor subject studies and demonstrate their learning process as well as their increased cultural awareness.

Students taking the course during and based on their international student exchange period (minimum of a semester) will receive 2-6 ECTS credits (option 1). The length and depth of the report with respect to the credits earned will be agreed upon beforehand. Alternatively (option 2), the course can be completed during and based on a training/working period in a Finnish organisation, provided the organisation is involved in international operations/markets. Option 2 is 2 ECTS credits.

Teaching methods The student writes a learning diary and a reflective essay in which the experiences are combined with contemporary literature related to the chosen focus subject. The theme and related theoretical discussions will be agreed upon beforehand, in the learning agreement.
