Announcement: The Hillsborough Motor Cycle Club will organise a National Trial held under the National Sporting Code, The Standing Trials Regulations of the ACU, the ACU S3 Parts National Trial Championship Regulations and any final instructions that may be issued.

Eligibility: All riders and passengers must hold a current ACU /SACU Trials Registration card or an ACU/SACU competition licence. Any rider or passenger from another FMN MUST produce a licence issued by their FMN together with start permission and proof of personal accident Insurance

Jack Wood Trial Forward

When I was asked to write a piece for this year’s programme, my first thought was that Andy had asked everyone else before

me but then I remembered that I actually won last year. I have been lucky enough to win my fair share of Nationals – some by

riding well and some not so much. Last year certainly fell into the latter category. A few sloppy mistakes early on appeared to

have cost me dearly, but I somehow managed to keep my head and put in a few good rides towards the end of the day and

then my rivals made the mistakes. That is the beauty of the Jack Wood Trial; the sections can make anybody make mistakes.

I have to confess I do have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this trial. I obviously love riding in my local areas and relish the

chance to ride against the countries best in my back garden. The hate part is simple – my results! On so many occasions, I have

made stupid mistakes that have cost me the win. It seemed to take an eternity to get my first win but it finally came in 2003 at

my 7th

attempt. Five more wins have followed but I’m still one away from matching my hero – the legend that is my Dad!!!

The Jack Wood Trial is in my blood and there is a lot of my blood, sweat and tears in some of the sections. Sometimes quite

literally as before I could ride I would love helping the Hillsborough Teams scrubbing sections like the River Kwai with wire

brushes, filling in many deep holes and chopping down brambles. I even remember being on the end of one of numerous crow-

bars trying to prise up the step on the River Kwai waterfall in an attempt to make it bigger. However, these laborious tasks had

benefits, as I would spend many hours of my childhood riding and riding the sections in order to scrub as much of the slime off

for the early riders. I’m in no doubt that I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without this in my past.

I would like to finish by wishing all the riders luck for this year’s trial. At the time of writing this, the course is currently under a

lot of snow. Obviously, this will affect the trial in some way as the section marking teams efforts have been hampered by the

snow. Please make sure that you thank all the observers and organisers as year by year it becomes harder to organise what is in

my mind one of the best trials in the year!

FINAL INSTRUCTIONSTHE TRIAL STARTS AT 9.00am

1. Sorry for the early start, we want to give the maximum time limit but we don’t want to finish in the dark.

2. As a result of the above the time limit is 7h.

3. There will be 2 petrol stops and two vans to transport fuel to points on the course; the first will leave the start at approximately at 09:45am. TWO CANS NEEDED

4. Please park as instructed at the start.

5. START AREA IS SILENT – NO PRACTICING BEFOREHAND

6. Don’t forget your number (enclosed) and sign on as you start the trial NOT with the secretary.

7. In an attempt to reduce to risk of road markings being removed we will be using direction arrows – black arrow on a yellow background. These have been kindly loaned by St Lukes Hospice who we will be raising money for so bring a donation!!

8. Please read the final, final instructions at the start.

JACK WOOD Q & A:

Q: 8:30 am start – are you having a laugh!!!

A: Err, no. Contrary to popular rumour the trial date has not moved so the self - styled Handsome Three can go and ride the Satigosa 3 day in Spain. ‘Our’ usual date was allocated to two other nationals this year in an admin error at the ACU. After some deliberation we thought it would be easier for us to move instead of two other clubs or all struggle for entries.

This presents a number of problems, mainly the availability of daylight. So…. The time limit is reduced by 15 mins The length of the course is reduced to compensate – still 50 sections though! There are fewer riders (entry limit is lower) And; we’re starting at 8:30am - but this is half an hour later than usual as we

normally are on the weekend that the clocks go forward when 9am is 8am.

Q: I entered with my mates/travelling partner, why aren’t I riding with them?A: We don’t make the rules, just try and abide by them, it’s because the rider order is…..

Riders

Many of the sections today are within a European Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), this means that the club has put in a great deal of work to maintain good relations with Ecology and Forestry departments in order that we can continue use of the sections and maintain the trials status.

It is vital that all competitors keep to the flags. Do not deviate in the slightest from the course. DO NOT ‘wander’ about on farmer’s property. The gates you see on the land don’t necessarily lead out - the only way out is via the flagged route even if you break down. Any one not following this will result in exclusion and more importantly to us loss of the land we have worked hard to secure.

It’s your responsibility to ensure that your bike is road legal - the Police are active in this area. In addition we can’t tolerate wheelies or stoppies etc. on the road – again if you’re reported this will lead to exclusion.

Spectators

There is no spectator access to Hoyles or the River Kwai below the footbridge as these areas are particularly sensitive. Any spectator associated with a rider in these areas will result in exclusion for the rider.

Where access is allowed please remember you are on the edge of the second most visited national park in the world - it’s a busy area. In addition all the land we visit is part of different working farms; so:

Please ensure that no gateways or driveways are blocked

Please park well off the road

THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE PETROL STOPS

No climbing over walls

No litter

And no dogs – it is or is approaching lambing time.

Observers

All rounds of the S3 Championship are under NO STOP rules, as you know the Jack Wood has been no stop for a number of years preceding its inclusion in the championship.

Please endeavour to observe the sections in this manner, no forward motion equals a 5.

IMPORTANT - READ BELOW

The numbers on the map show the groups of sections around a suggested route. Petrol will be taken to the points as shown.

NB. If the Public Highway is used it is the riders responsibility to ensure that both his/her machine and they are fully legal for the purpose .

The Jack Wood Trial will use the public highway to link various groups of sections on private land.

The onus will be on the competitor to find their own route.

There will be no time constraints or penalties attached to travelling between the groups of sections.

On the public highway the only merit attached to a rider is in relation to good behaviour and compliance with the Highway Code. Anyone found in breach of this will be disqualified.
