-- Environment & Geography

-- Migration & Settlement

-- Commerce & Entrepreneurialism

-- Heritage & Identity

Dear Teachers, Community Organizations, Families, and Museum Members,

We are thrilled to announce the “Locker Project” in association with the Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community exhibition at the Pink Palace Museum, which is scheduled to open March 2, 2019 through October 28, 2019.

The Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community exhibition celebrates Memphis’ bicentennial year by exploring the past, present, and future of Memphis.

The “Bicentennial Locker Project” invites students, community groups, and families to “decorate” the inside of a school locker to represent their views on one of the exhibition’s major themes:

Heritage & Identity Environment & Geography Commerce & Entrepreneurialism

Migration & Settlement Arts & Entertainment

First, second, and third place winners will be chosen in each category. Winning submissions will be displayed as part of the Pink Palace Museum’s installation of our bicentennial exhibition.

Participation in the “Bicentennial Locker Project” may support students’ annual yearly growth in the visual arts. This program meets several of the NAEA Visual Arts Curriculum Standards.

o Perform -- The project allows students the opportunity to select, apply, and utilize different media, techniques and processes.

o Create -- The project allows students to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of symbolism and ideas.o Respond -- The artwork itself along with the accompanying written description affords the student the

opportunity to describe the work within a variety of contexts.o Connect -- This project has a cross-curricular connection--connecting visual arts with history, science and

culture.

The Bicentennial Locker Project…Competition Details

The exhibit Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community tells stories about the history of Memphis from cultural, historical, and environmental points of view. The “Locker Project” challenges people to consider their own ideas about the city’s past, present and future.

The Challenge: Students, community organizations, families, and museum members are challenged to create their own original artwork. Winning entries will be displayed in a traditional school locker as part of the exhibition. The artwork should be based on the artist’s interpretation of the following themes:

Geography & Environment -- How have the environment and geography of the Mid-South shaped our city’s development? Create a visual representation of our region’s geography and environment.

Migration & Settlement -- How have migration and settlement influenced Memphis’ culture? Illustrate how migration and settlement have influenced the culture of Memphis.

Heritage & Identity -- How has your heritage shaped your sense of identity? Create a visual representation that describes how your family heritage or a connection with a person

or group has shaped your sense of identity as a Memphian.

Commerce & Entrepreneurialism -- Develop an artistic representation of important members of Memphis’ business community. Identify Mid-South entrepreneurs who have revolutionized business in America.

Arts & Entertainment -- Create an illustration that shows how art and entertainment contribute to life in Memphis. How have arts and entertainment contributed to life in Memphis? To Memphis’ reputation

worldwide? To Memphis’ sense of self? To Memphis’ identity?

Who May Participate?

Students in grades K-12. Students may participate as an individual, small group, class, school, or community groups.

Multiple entries are allowed, and encouraged, from each school. Winners will be selected from these groups: K-5, 6-8, 9-12 grade, and community groups.

Materials and Details: Art projects may be made of any traditional art material- paper, canvas, metal, paint, marker, paper

mache, etc. Artwork can be either 2D or 3D. Please make sure 3D objects will fit inside the locker door opening. Each project must have an accompanying description of the artwork-- 200 words or less. For school

entries, this must be written by the students or in the students’ voice. A registration form must also accompany each project. Items become the property of the Pink Palace Family of Museums. Winning entries will be displayed in the Pink Palace Museum through the run of the exhibit (March 2,

2019 – October 28, 2019). Lockers measure approximately 15” x 15” x 24”. Locker door opening is approximately 12” x 22”. Please allow a border of approximately ½ inch on the side panels so museum staff can adjust artwork to

fit as necessary. Art should be created to cover all or part of the 4 inside panels (three inside walls and the inside of the

locker door). 3-D artwork can sit on the bottom, or hang from the top of the locker (using magnets, tape or other such

materials); however, we discourage placing 2-D artwork on the top of the locker as it may not be visible. Note: Due to cost, ‘physical lockers’ will not be provided to each participant. You must make a ‘mock’

cardboard locker or create individual panels that can be adhered to the permanent locker using the measurement provided above.

Winning entries will be displayed in actual lockers; please do not permanently attach artwork to the ‘mock’ locker.

Vents and other hardware can be covered-please make allowances (see template). Artwork must be delivered in the ‘mock’ locker or with panels clearly labeled. Photos of the finished

product will be helpful in the event artwork falls or moves.

Deadlines: Registration – December 20, 2018 All entries must be delivered to the Pink Palace Museum no later than Friday, January 11, 2019. Please make sure that materials are temporarily adhered to your ‘mock’ locker or each panel is properly

labeled.

Please deliver a copy of your registration form, artwork panels (or mounted in the ‘mock’ locker), and photo(s) to:
