Altab Ali Park – Whitechapel High Street – East London Mosque –

Name and Class:

A Good Geographer might ask questions like these. Ask these questions today.

What is the most interesting thing you can see?

How does this place make you feel?

How can you tell this is an urban space?

Who uses a space like this?

Where do the people come from who live and work here?

What do you think this place was like in the old days?

What do you think it will be like in the future?

Urban WalkToday you will get to see and explore a range of different urban spaces. Remember that URBAN spaces are those where lots of people live, work and play. We are lucky enough to live in London, which is a ‘global city’.This means that it is an important city that makes a difference to the rest of the world. People from all over the world live and settle here, lots of wealthy businesses work here, there are lots of tourists who come to visit and it has a huge (and growing!) population.

In this box, you can (neatly) make a prediction about what you might see. You can use words and draw pictures.

Travelling to our Urban Walk

We will travel between Upton Park Station and Liverpool Street Station, using the District Line. The District Line serves 60 stations! It is 40 miles long.It was built in 1868, then was extended to Upminster in 1902.

In this box, you can (neatly) make a prediction about what you might see. You can use words and draw pictures.

Spitalfields Market

1891 2013

There has been a market in this space since 1638, when Charles I was the king. ‘Flesh, fowl and roots’ were sold here. The buildings were demolished in 1887 and that is when the ones you see today were built.Today, the market is very different. It doesn’t sell animals, fruit and vegetables. What do people sell in Spitalfields Market today?

Why do people need markets in a settlement?
