SWAT Team Early Warning Alert!

We received a request to sing once more for the Welcome Home Ceremony for the Grandmothers 4 Africa Cycle Tour, and we happily offered to send a SWAT (Sing When Asked To) Team!

When: September 9th, about 2:30 to 3:30pm (Continued above right)

Where: We're not sure yet, either Parliament Buildings or Centennial Square

>> Further details will come in August. <<

We hope you will be available for this event at 3 pm on September 9th, 2018 as Mayor Helps and all the cyclists arrive at our destination. We have grandmothers completing both the 50km ride on the Saanich peninsula and the 275km ride from Campbell River to Victoria.

At last year's event, we had a fine time supporting this worthwhile cause, and we even attracted three new singers to our choirs! We will likely sing our Zulu Freedom Medley and other beautiful and high-energy songs. If you are interested, please RSVP by email to Cathy to let us know!

A Canada Day Circle of Song

From Cathy and Dick: We would love to have any of you join us on Canada Day for a morning of singing with our little Unitarian community in James Bay. Here's the blurb from their website:

A Canada Day Circle of SongCathy Baker and Dick Jackson have been sharing their mutual love of music and group singing for several years with the Capital UU community. They have served as music program directors for our Islands-regional Summer Camp and have led monthly music with the Salt Spring Unitarians. Dick and Cathy have recently become the co-directors of Victoria’s own well known and loved Gettin’ Higher Choir. On Canada Day, come join us as Dick and Cathy lead a circle of song and explore how singing together can inspire, empower and remind us how to be our best selves, as individuals and as members of our overlapping communities.

When: July 1st, our program runs from 10:00 to 11:00am with coffee and visiting afterwards (come at 9:30am for an optional rehearsal of some songs!)

Where: James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies Street

We'll likely sing eight or nine songs, and we'll provide lyrics and music as needed. Among the songs we're considering: Somewhere to Begin, What Must Be Done, Break 'Em On Down, Lead With Love.

No RSVP needed but if you have any questions contact Dick Jackson

Storage Needed for GHC Soprano Risers & Picnic Tables

We’re still looking!

The choir community members who has been storing our choir’s Soprano risers and our picnic tables for a few years now need to have them moved to new homes sometime over the summer. Do you have some basement, garage or other space to spare where they can live for a while? There are: 2 wooden box risers ~ 4’ x 4’ x 1’ (approximate) 2 or 3 folding tables ~ 6’ x 3’ (probably)

The risers and tables could be stored with two different hosts.

If you can help with either or both please contact Dick at 250-220-6117 or [email protected]

Admin Team Notes

Cathy & Dick

A Note of Gratitude:

Deep thanks from our hearts for so much that happened around our wonderful concerts: to all our singers for putting their souls into their learning and the

performances (and for keeping the secret for the biggest surprise event we've ever pulled off!)

to Denis and Siobhan for helping to direct our music to a beautiful delivery

to Glenice, Graham and Kevin for their brilliant contributions and generous spirit of collaboration

to Bill Hanson and Jo Volek (and her crew of volunteer helpers: Ann, Barb, Carol, Lisa and Nancy!) for keeping us organized in various ways

to Denis, again, for his prolific composing and arranging talent that gave us the breadth of music to work with

to all involved in creating the lovely musical garments you presented to us--we feel wrapped in your love!

And to Siobhan and Denis, once more our hearts overflow with gratitude, for your skillful grace in easing us into our role as leaders of this lovely, harmonious community. We look forward to growing our treasured musical friendship with both of you. Násië!

Regarding the newsletter and email, we do intend to continue with good communications with our community! We are still figuring out what exact form that will take, and we will be in touch with all of you by email, likely in August.

Have a great summer! And if you need some soul-nourishing group singing, drop in to High Noon Choir any Tuesday!

Cathy & Dick

Admin Team Notes (cont.)

Denis

First of all a HUGE thank-you to everyone who participated in this session's music, and especially to those who sang with us all on the stage! It was an amazing session for me for many reasons, and the concerts were the delicious icing on the already very nourishing cake.

I will be letting everyone know more details of the "Monday Night Choir" soon - those interested, please stay tuned.

And, in closing, my sincere thanks to Bill Hanson for his enormous contribution to the GHC in two principal ways: first, through the newsletters and notices that he has sent out over the years that kept us all in touch and connected; and second, for his organized, compassionate, and bulletproof caring of the registration process for you all. I am looking forward to working with Bill through the transitional process that will now begin, and I wish him the very best for his future plans.

Looking forward to seeing many of you on Friday!

Concert Thoughts, Feelings and/or Stories to Share?

Whether you were in the audience or on stage for last weekend’s concerts please take a few minutes to share your thoughts, feelings and stories about them by adding a comment on our web site. If you have received feedback from others who were there please consider sharing that.

We also invite you to scroll through our site’s Past Concerts listings and check out some of the comments for them. If you experience a memory about one or more past concert that you would like to share add a comment. It is never too late.

It just takes a minute to share any thoughts, feelings and stories via the comments link in the lower right corner of

each concert listing. (Please note: If the link says “No Comments” that simply means that there aren’t any yet…go ahead and click on it).

Such thoughts, feelings and stories about concert experiences can help promote our future concerts and, most importantly, they will add heart to the concert history that is evolving on our site.

You might also consider copying your comment (before clicking on submit) for subsequent posting on our Facebook page and/or your own.

CAR POOLINGWANTED & OFFERED

To arrange car pools you can announce your request/offer at any choir break.  You can also email your request/offer to me at [email protected] with your name, contact information, your from/to location and which choir you are in. I will put your request under this heading in the next newsletter.  Don’t be shy about repeating your request at choir or in the newsletter in subsequent weeks if you don’t connect the first time.

June 22nd Year End Party Car Pooling The #83 bus service on West Saanich Rd. can be inconvenient for the start of the party and it is non-existent for the end.  Beyond that parking might prove difficult with the number of people expected to attend.  Therefore If you want a ride, or are willing to offer one, please let me know ASAP!   [email protected]

Whether you are offering, or desiring, a ride please specify where you start from.  Those of you desiring rides might also specify other potential pick-up points on main routes that you can get to (by bus or other means) that might be more convenient for drivers. On Thursday morning I will send out a list, of everyone who responds, to our whole community so that interested party goers can connect with each other to make mutually agreeable arrangements.  ~ Bill

Now Live! Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 5

Head over to VirtualChoir5.com now to find out more and sign up.

Not sure what, exactly, makes a Virtual Choir? Everything you need is on the website.  Remember to submit your video before 11:59pm Pacific Time on June 27, 2018 to join the choir and be a part of the film.

The music - Deep Field - is scored for symphony orchestra, chorus and electronica and was inspired by one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time ? the Deep Field images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Their discovery is a tale of human aspiration, endeavor, wonder and extraordinary scientific vision. Eric Whitacre is thrilled to be partnering with the Space Telescope Science Institute and 59 Productions to create the Deep Field film.

Virtual Choir 5 is a celebration of STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math). Visit the website for some fun challenges inspired by STEAM so you can learn more about anything from Fibonacci to Flying Machines, Music to Math or Singing to Spiral Galaxies. Can you master the challenges and collect all the badges? You'll be in with a chance to win some cool prizes if you collect them all!

If you need any help, head to our Frequently Asked Questions or submit a request and our volunteer team of experienced online-singers will get back to you as soon as possible.

Inspired by the two previous retreats that Matthew Wright has led for the Contemplative Society in 2015 and 2017, he is returning to share his heart-centered wisdom with us, teaching on the Gospels of Thomas,

Mary Magdalene and Philip, as well as the writings of  Sufi Masters from Ibn al-Arabi to Jalaluddin Rumi, using meditation, chanting, and embodiment practices to deepen our learning.

Visit www.contemplative.org for more information and to register.
