At New Brighton Catholic School we are Reflectful. When we live reflectively, we delight in the signs and wonders that appear in our lives: the family that surrounds us and loves us, our friends, the beaches, the mountains - everything that God has created. St Grimonia lived a very solitary life, but she was never alone. She saw God in everything - the sky above, the sun and the clouds - and received much strength from thinking about the Word of God and from her awareness of God’s presence. CondolencesThe school family extends its sympathy to Trinity Alfeld and her family, to Kloe and Sam Evans and their family, and to Sarah Thomson and her family. Trinity’s grandmother, Kloe and Sam’s grandfather, and Sarah’s father passed away recently.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let PerpetualLight shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all

the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Fascinating Art Trip

Last Wednesday Year 7&8 visited the Central City. We began with a tour of the Spectrum Street Art Exhibition at the YMCA with our guide Wendy. Wow! There was some incredible street art by local and international artists. Following this we walked to Christchurch Art Gallery and were shown around by two wonderful guides. The hit was the seal popping out of the ice whole in the Animal Exhibition. We had lunch in The Square watching tourists and business people rush about. Finally we visited the new Margret Mahy Playground, stopping on the way to view graffiti and art displays on walls and buildings - some quality, some not so. At the

playground we had half an hour, but it felt more like two minutes - we think Mr Adams blew the whistle early! It was a great day and we were all extremely grateful for the opportunity to view our city close up. Nicole Dooley/Paris Litt (Yr 8)(Can you spot our students in the art above? Ed.)

Beach Trip Last Friday Year 4-8 went to New Brighton Beach to visit the library, play beach games and clean up around the beach. Our class played Connect Four in the sand in groups of four. Next we rotated and picked up a huge amount of rubbish. We found some pretty gross stuff, including a dead seagull and bottle of ... well I’m not going to tell you about that! Then we went to the library, where everyone got really interesting books out. We all enjoyed the trip and look forward to going each term for another mixture of fun, community service and learning. Verity O’Brien (Yr 8)

Voting for the New Zealand FlagYear 7&8 participated in the New Zealand Flag Consideration Project - Kids Edition. We spent time in class learning about the project, the history of our current flag, being citizens and the voting process. Finally, on the day of the vote count, we separated into three groups - people who wanted a new flag, people who didn’t want a new flag and people who didn’t really care. Then we had a debate over which flag was better. The results came out much like the real flag vote, with the new flag coming in with ten votes and the old flag getting eleven votes. So our old flag won with one extra point when we voted (of course our vote didn’t actually count). It was an interesting process. Funnily enough, one person did not vote, much like some

people in NZ. Lilah O’Brien/Alisha Mill (Yr 8)__________________________________________________________________

School PoliciesDo you know that you can send general feedback about our school’s policies at any time? Also, each term SchoolDocs have a formal review on policies. These can be found under

Current Review. The BOT encourages you to have your say on NBC policies. Go to http://www.schooldocs.co.nz/ - click on Search for your school (top righthand corner), follow the instructions. user name: nbcpassword: footsteps__________________________________________________________________

BOT ElectionsThe triennial elections to the Board of Trustees are next term. Parents/caregivers are entitled to vote but we are missing the

postal details for some second household parents. Please confirm with the Office that we have yours.

Yr 1-3 Margaret Mahy TourLast Friday we took a bus into the city. On the tour around the Peterborough Street Library we found out all the things the library has to offer us. We went out the back to the staff only area to see what happens behind the scenes. We listened to some readings of Margaret Mahy's books and got to choose a book to sit down and read. Once all the library excitement was over, we were starving so we got on our way to the Margaret Mahy playground and had some food, then we played and played and played. Thankfully our prayers were answered and the rain stayed away. Thank you to our wonderful parents; you are all amazing and we would

BasketballSome seniors who are in the basketball elective on Tuesday

afternoon went to watch the Canterbury Rams play the Southland Sharks at Cowes Stadium. The first half score was extremely close with the Southland Sharks in the lead, but in the second half the Rams bounced back scoring 20 unanswered points! In the end it was a very close game but the Rams won by 5 points. An enormous thank you to Marcus and Ethan from the Rams for giving us the tickets.
