Special Olympics / Active StartSpecial Olympics Calgary offers 21 different sports and 33 programs for athletes
to participate in through the year, including program for Young Athletes ages 2-7.
They focus on providing fun, engaging, sport experiences for all individuals with
varying abilities to participate in. Special Olympics Calgary achieves this by
placing athletes in specific divisions according to their skills and abilities.

Active Start provides lessons for young athletes (chronological age 2-6 years) to
learn about running, kicking, throwing, and jumping, but then builds on these
experiences from the gym and provides caregivers educational information and
resources that allows them to offer similar opportunities in the home
environment. The rationale is that when children with an intellectual disability
receive early instruction in basic motor skills and have the opportunity to
experience ‘play’ there is improvement in their physical, social and cognitive
abilities.
Sportball (Calgary)Sportball offers a big variety of Multi-Sport and Sport-Specific weekly class
programs designed to teach kids the gross motor skills they need to get in the
game, including balance, stamina, strength, timing and coordination. Expert
Coaches break down skills into kid-sized bites of fun in supportive, non-
competitive settings that encourage teamwork. Whether we’re teaching toddlers

STAR (Special Talents in Arts and Recreation) is a interactive experience that
allows children between the ages of 8 and 15 with cognitive delays to participate
in a tailored program that uses music, movement and instruments to further
benefit their current abilities and strengths in the performing arts.
