4. CHANGES TO UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM FROM 2019Planned annual changes to undergraduate curriculum might occur at the unit level and/or major level and/or honours level and would need to take place, where relevant, in line with the University Policy on Changes to Units and University Policy on Courses – Undergraduate.
To this end, the Committee were asked to consider the following change proposal:
4.1. Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education
TRIM Curriculum item Change summary
F29282 MJD-CMMST Communication and Media Studies Change to unit sequence
Change to about this course
Change to learning outcomes
Change to experiential learning
Although it was not prescribed, members were encouraged to promote the use of faculty-based Learning Designers who could support academics in the writing of learning outcomes, prior to submission.
In addition, members noted that the ‘Writing Learning Outcomes’ factsheet could now be accessed via CAIDi and whilst it was recognised that this was a very useful tool, members noted that it was the intention that this would be developed further to assist staff.
Further, members were advised that in the coming weeks they would be contacted regarding further development opportunities in this area.
Members provided the following feedback:
The learning outcomes for the major did not make grammatical sense and should be revised accordingly and in line with Bloom’s taxonomy.
Within the field ‘about this course’, the term ‘areas of research’ could be challenged.
RESOLVED – 20/19
to approve the proposed changes to MJD-CMMST Communication and Media Studies, as set out in the agenda attachments, subject to revisions being made in line with the above minuted feedback to the satisfaction of the Chair, effective from 2020.

In considering this proposal, members discussed the requested exemption to the assessment policy, whereby the indicative weighting for the group work was set at 60 percent.
81
File Ref: F68752
During the discussion, the following points were made:
Peer review could be adopted to moderate the marks and this in turn would provide a safety net for students.
From a student perspective, it was important that, where there is group work, this should have a well-defined structure and group work may potentially dissuade students from taking the unit.
It was suggested that guidelines would be useful for field work trips. It was pointed out that field work units may potentially be inequitable.
Members overall agreed that the exemption to the assessment policy be approved due to the unique aspect of the unit.
In regard to the learning outcomes, revisions were required, and the Chair would provide further feedback to inform these revisions.
RESOLVED – 28/19
to approve PUBH2291 Global Health Field Trip as an undergraduate unattached elective, as set out in the agenda attachments, subject to revisions being made in line with the above minuted feedback to the satisfaction of the Chair, for offering from 2020.
7. CHANGES TO UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM FROM 2020

In considering the above proposed changes, the following feedback was provided:
In regards to the MJD-HYART History of Art major:
The learning outcomes for the major needed to be tidied up; and The new unit proposal HART2370 should be placed at the correct level in the sequence and in addition
there was dissidence between the content and the title of the unit. A member also pointed out that this unit should include indigenous content.
In turn, the changes to this major would need to be resubmitted for further consideration by the Committee.
In regards to the MJD-LDARC Landscape Architecture major:
The notes field in the sequence needed to be updated to reflect the change to the point value of the unit LACH3001. Additionally, it was pointed out that with the change in point value, this would also need to be reflected in the learning outcomes and assessment fields for the unit; and
The learning outcomes for the new unit proposal LACH2050 required revisions, and the Chair would provide further feedback to inform these revisions.
In regards to the honours specialisation HON-LWSOC Law and Society:
Revisions were required to the learning outcomes for the major, and the Chair would provide further feedback to inform these revisions;
With the new unit LAWS4277, members discussed as to whether or not a 50% assessment weighting was appropriate for a single quiz and noted that clarification would be sought as to whether or not this should be quizzes; and
With the unit LAWS5260, members were advised that consultations had taken place and noted that clarification would be sought on the assessment tied to outcomes fields.
RESOLVED – 29/19
to approve the proposed changes to MJD-LDARC Landscape Architecture; HON-LWSOC Law and Society and associated new unit proposals (LACH2050, LAWS4227 & LAWS5260), as set out in the agenda attachments, subject to revisions being made in line with the above minuted feedback to the satisfaction of the Chair, effective from 2020;

In considering the above proposals, it was pointed out that these were multidisciplinary and were in line with the strategic direction of the University. In regard to the uniqueness requirement, as outlined in the UWA Policy on Courses – Undergraduate, the Chair agreed to seek clarification from the Academic Secretary on this requirement pertaining to multidisciplinary majors.
On a related matter, members noted that there would be separate discussions around the policy relating to the broadening requirement.
With regards to the Gender Studies major, members were informed that the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences were in support of health units being taught in the major. This would, however, have an impact on the area of knowledge of the said units, which would in turn impact on the broadening aspect.
86
File Ref: F68752
In addition, members noted that the major was to be taken as a second major only. It was anticipated that in the future an honours proposal would be submitted. Meanwhile, the CAIDi fields ‘Degree specific major’ and ‘Honours’ would need to be updated accordingly. Further, the notes field for Level 3 should state ‘take units to the value of 12 points’.
Further clarification would be sought on the percentage weighting of assessment item ‘test’ in the new unit proposal GEND2903.
With regards to the Criminology major, a member questioned the inclusion of the complementary unit PSYC2203 Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Psychology, but members determined that it was appropriate for this unit to be included in the sequence.
Members noted that clarification would be sought pertaining to the learning outcomes for the new unit proposal HIST2222.
RESOLVED – 33/19
to recommend to the Academic Council that the majors MJD-GNWST Gender Studies; MJD-CRIMN Criminology and associated new unit proposals (GEND2903 & HIST2222), as set out in the agenda attachment, subject to revisions being made in line with the above minuted feedback to the satisfaction of the Chair, be approved for offering from 2020.

Members were informed that the above course and major had been developed as a step towards improving the student experience. For example, students had found taking the scholarly activity units at the same time as the different specialised streams, too demanding.
It was pointed out that both versions of the MD would need to be offered under the “no disadvantage rule”.
Members noted that students in the current MD (90580) would not at present be able to transfer into the above

Members were informed that prior to this proposal going to the Academic Council for approval, the first year of offering may be changed to 2021 due to resourcing implications.

11. CONSTITUTION OF THE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE: REF F68753
A member sought clarification as to why an invitation to attend the meeting had not been extended to staff with specific expertise in their discipline, relevant to items on the agenda, in particular new course proposals. The member believed that this would allow members to be better informed.
Members were informed that the Constitution of the Committee allowed the Chair to invite one or more persons to attend the meeting. In this instance, staff who had requested permission to attend had been advised that it was the responsibility of the Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) to speak to items on the agenda from their respective Faculty. Furthermore, members may be encumbered by such attendance.

The next meeting of the Curriculum Committee will be held on Wednesday 10 th July at 2pm in the Senate Room. The cut-off date for submission of items for the committee’s agenda is Wednesday 26 th June. Please refer any issues for discussion to the Executive Officer, Ms Kath Williams ([email protected]).
