A Message from Claire…………In 1983, this was happening:

M*A*S*H (TV series) ends after 11 years and 251 episodes on CBS. The series finale, Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, becomes the highest rated episode in TV history.

Swatch introduces their first watches.   Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space on the

Space Shuttle Challenger.   Microsoft Word is first released.   McDonald’s introduces the McNugget.   The Top Song was Every Breath You Take by The Police.   The Big Movies included Return of the Jedi, Terms of Endear-

ment and Flashdance.  Price of Chevrolet Chevette in 1983: $7,287.00.  Bananas: 33 cents/pound.  Cabbage Patch Kids were the hottest Christmas toy.  The Great South Bay Quilters was formed.

The Great South Bay Quilters celebrates 35 years this spring.  That is a significant length of time for a group to stay together, and it demon-strates the high level of dedication and commitment the founders and leaders of our guild have embraced.  I wish there was a way to know how many charity quilts and projects we have donated to com-munity members in need throughout our history.  Even if we take the lowest calculation (35 years times 60 members times 1 charity quilt per year) that would give us a minimum of 2,100 quilts.  In reality, our guild has donated thousands upon thousands of quilts, placemats, pillowcases, huggie bears, toiletry bags, doggie beds, port pillows, walker caddies, etc.  The number of spools of thread and machine needles we’ve used is staggering.  The sweetness in all this comes from the fact that we do this all on a volunteer basis.  We, as a guild and as individuals, have much to be grateful for.  Our friendships, our comradery, our purpose, and our commitment to the fiber arts band us together into a very special group.  Thank you for your part in our history.  Stich by stitch we will continue to create our way to a bright future.

Mission Statement: The Great South Bay Quilters’ Society, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering an interest in quilting, encouraging the preser-vation of our quilt heritage, and offering year round instructional opportunities for its mem-bers.

The society provides a meeting where quilters can support each other’s growth and develop-ment. The membership year is from October 1 through September 30. Meetings start @ 7:00 p.m. The annual membership fee is $30. Mem-bers receive a bi-monthly newsletter and are el-igible to participate in workshops. Monthly meetings are held at Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center.

And a Few Words From Carole…….. Welcome Spring! Since December we have had quite a flurry of activity in guild programs. Our January Sit & Sew was a beehive of productivity. The participants in the Puppy Rag Quilt Workshop in February completed adorable baby quilts. March brings Quilt Camp which promises to be a fun day of stitching with our quilting friends.

As we head toward the warmer weather, our calendar is blooming with more workshops. Our May meeting will be a celebration commemo-rating our guild’s 35th anniversary. I hope you can attend that meeting and celebrate with us.

Also, at the May meeting, we will be handing out the 2018 Question-naire. Please take the time to write down your ideas for upcoming guild projects. Was there something you saw during Show & Tell that inspired you? Did you see a new technique in a magazine that you would like to see demonstrated? Let us know! The Program Commit-tee uses your feedback to plan our next year’s program. While we can-not accommodate every request, we try to put together a well-rounded program for everyone to enjoy.

Ladies, get busy because gardening and the nice weather will be pulling you away from your machines soon!!

Paw Print Flannel

We have a donation of several yards of white flannel with a black paw print on it that was donated for use on the blankets being given to the Islip Animal Shelter.

If you would like to use some, please call or email Mary-Ellen Ransom so she can bring the fabric to the next meeting. 631-859-0217/[email protected]

Baby Rag Quilt Workshop - February 17, 2018

On a chilly Saturday in February, a dozen of us intrepid quilters met at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library to learn how to make an adorable rag quilt in the shape of a puppy. Joan Dlouhy and Susanne Ankner co-taught the workshop and kept us all on track. Upon completion, there were no missing ears or tails that I’m aware of.

It was a lovely day spent with our quilting buddies. Below is a photo of some of the finished quilts. Thanks to Joan and Susanne for creating the pattern and sharing their creativity with those of us who attended. JoAnn In-calcatera won the raffle prize!

QUILT CAMP 2018

It was the weekend after the fourth Nor’easter of Season, however on this day the snow was melting, and we were looking for crocuses to pop out! Thirty-two ladies of the Great South Bay Guild were gathered for the 2018 Quilt Camp on Saturday, March 24th. This is an event we all look forward to: new techniques, new patterns and old friends. I don’t really mean old!!!

This year Joan Dlouhy was demonstrating and running the Attic Window Quilt Workshop. Many of the ladies were anxious to get started and a few tables with members were “Sitting, Sewing” quilting and gabbing! Some applique, some knitting, but all engaged in heavy conversation and laughter. Needless to say, Joan gave great directions and we were all happy to either complete or be near completion when we left. REMEMBER “Show and Tell Wednesday at our March meeting.”

It goes without saying there was Dunkin Donuts and coffee for breakfast and a delivery of wraps, salad, chips and pasta salad for lunch catered by Frank and Maria’s of Bay Shore (DELISH). There was a brief break for lunch only because it seemed we all needed to get on to the next step on the quilts.Did I mention Claire had a nasty naked chicken clucking periodically to announce door prizes? How thoughtful. I am sure we all won a quilting notion and pack of cookies! Mmm…

I know I speak for all the members and a few guests when I say what a delightful day was spent. Thank you to the officers and members who planned, organized and executed this event at no cost to us. We always come away with so much!

Joan, great ClassSuccessful project! Even mine!Rose Alvarado

If you have a tip or trick you would like to share, please let us know. It does not have to be related to quilting.

Kitchen Bay Window Makeover

Cut strips of fabric with a rotary cutter about 2 1/2 inches wide to make a fun "curtain" for the NEW kitchen window.

Hang the strips one by one on the spring tension rod.

A lady went to Harbor Freight, bought a laser light, and attached it to her sewing machine withVelcro. What a great idea and only $5 for the light.
