2018 GSA/Playford Trust Honours Scholarship in Earth Sciences Outline: Working with government, the tertiary sector, industry and the community the Playford Trust provides a range of scholarships for high achieving South Australian students to develop the research and skills base required to advance areas of strategic importance for South Australia. The Playford Trust in partnership with Geological Society of Australia - South Australian Division (GSA-SA) is offering one Honours scholarship in Earth Sciences at a South Australian University. The Scholarship awards the recipient $5,000 and is available through the generous support of GSA, which was established as a non-profit learned society in 1952 to promote, advance and support the Earth Sciences in Australia. The Society’s members represent all Earth Science professions, including field geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, palaeontologists, geotechnical and engineering geologists, environmental geologists, planetary geoscientists, and associated professions. Members come from the minerals and petroleum industries, government departments, research and education institutions and consultancy groups. The Playford Trust in partnership with Geological Society of Australia - South Australian Division (GSA-SA) is offering one Honours scholarship in Earth Sciences at a South Australian University. The Scholarship awards the recipient $5,000 and is available through the generous support of GSA, which was established as a non-profit learned society in 1952 to promote, advance and support the Earth Sciences in Australia.

The Society’s members represent all Earth Science professions, including field geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, palaeontologists, geotechnical and engineering geologists, environmental geologists, planetary geoscientists, and associated professions. Members come from the minerals and petroleum industries, government departments, research and education institutions and consultancy groups.

Key strategies for the Geological Society of Australia are to:

Eligibility Criteria:1. Students are undertaking full time Honours in Earth Sciences in 2018 at any one of the three

South Australian universities.

2. Students are Australian citizens or a holder of a permanent resident visa, and are South Australian residents who are likely to spend a significant part of their career in South Australia or are likely to provide a benefit to the State.

3. Students are high achievers, with an excellent undergraduate academic record.

4. Students are of good character with preference given to students that display leadership potential.

Consideration will also be given to the following, but students are not precluded from applying based on these criteria:

5. Students can demonstrate they are considering post-graduate studies.

6. Students do not concurrently hold any other major industry-related scholarships.

Nomination and Selection ProcessThe Playford Trust calls for nominations from the universities or directly from students.

The Trust reserves the right to accept or reject any or all of the nominations if it considers the nominees do not reflect the objectives of the Trust or do not meet the high standards consistent with the status of this award. In consultation with the GSA–SA Division, the Board of the Playford Trust will make the final selection.

Important information when completing the application form:1. The student must be an Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent resident visa, and a South

Australian resident who is likely to spend a significant part of their career in South Australia or is likely to provide a benefit to the State. The Trust does not support interstate or overseas students currently undertaking studies in South Australia.

2. Please complete all fields of the application form and make sure all information requested is provided to assist in the selection process.

3. The student must complete Sections 1, 2, and 3.

4. The student’s supervisor or an academic referee such as the dean of school, head of department or senior lecturer is required to complete Section 4 and comment about the student’s achievements, character, and leadership potential.

5. Attach the final official transcript of results to the application and include the Grade Point Average in Section 2 in the appropriate field.

6. Information on the preferred project to be undertaken in the Honours program is required to assist the assessment process.
