1) Open InDesign and Create a New Document.

2) Create a document with 2 pages. Switch the Page Size to Tabloid and set the column number to 4. Click OK.

3) To make a headline:a. Use the Type tool (the big T on the side toolbar). Click and drag the size of the box you

want. It is easier if you draw a bigger box than what you actually need and size it down later.

b. In the box, the type defaults to a small size. Click once in the textbox and hit Ctrl A to select all the text.

c. When the text is highlighted, hit Ctrl Shift > to increase the font size. Continue to press the keys until the font is the desired size.

d. Resize your textbox if necessary. If there is a red + in the bottom right corner, it means you have text inside the textbox that isn’t being displayed. You need to fix your box size, delete the extra text, or make your text smaller.

e. Alternatively, you can change the font and size of your text using the drop-down menus at top horizontal toolbar. These menus only appear when the Type tool is selected.

f. Create another text box underneath your headline and enter your byline (the author of your article).



4) To place a story: a. Create a text box using the Type tool.b. Click and drag the size of the box you want. Again, it’s easier if you draw a bigger box

than what you actually need and size it down later.c. From the LHS-NewsPaper drive, open your interview article Word DOC. Hit Ctrl A to

select all the text. Hit Ctrl C to copy the text.d. Paste the text into your textbox by hitting Ctrl V. e. Notice the red + in the bottom right column. That means there is more text that needs

to flow and you need to flow the text.f. Click the black arrow (the selection tool).g. Click the red + (the outport).h. A loaded text icon will appear. Using this icon, create a new box next to your original

box to flow your story. It will automatically populate with your overflow text. Continue doing this until the entire story flows.



5) To add a picture: a. There are several ways to add pictures. You can drag one from the picture folder in

windows, or you can create a box and file:place it. 2222We’ll practice the latter method.b. Use the rectangle frame tool (locate the box with an X in it on the left toolbar):c. Drag your mouse to create a box. This will appear with an X in the middle.



d. With that box highlighted, go to File on the toolbar and select place to put your image into the box.

e. Most likely, the image will be bigger than the frame you have created. To fix this you need to switch to the white arrow and select the picture. Doing so will show you an orange box that represents the actual picture. You can then use the hand tool to move the part of the picture into the frame that you want displayed.

f. Use the white arrow to drag out parts of the picture that you want to show. Use the black arrow to resize the box.



g. You will still probably need to resize the picture. To do so, look to the toolbars at the top. Find the one with % options. Make sure the chain link option is not broken.

h. You can then change the size percentage up or down. DO NOT resize only one of the dimensions or you will warp the picture and it will look terrible.



i. Switch back to the black arrow and select the picture to move it. Pull it into the middle of the text. Notice the text is flowing behind it. You need to do the next step to text wrap.

6) To wrap text: a. From the toolbar, select Window and then click Text Wrap to bring up the tool.



b. Choose second text wrap icon from the left. You will then be given the option to adjust the padding around the image.



c. You can also adjust the size of the frame to crop the picture and focus on what you want to display. Adjusting the frame size keeps the rest of the photo hidden, so you can adjust as needed to play with your space needs.

d. Move your picture into your story.
