February disappeared as quickly as it arrived! During February, grade 7-12 students received their second term report cards and celebrated their new semester with a curling bonspiel. Also this month, K-10 students participated in Jump Rope for Heart while grade 11/12 students listened to Denise Thoner of Carlton Trail speak about career and post-secondary opportunities in our geographic region. Imperial students and staff enjoyed the Cookie-grams put together by the SRC on Valentine’s Day and the Formal Day. In addition, needless to say, I am sure that we all enjoyed a relaxing February Break!

This month, I was busy with a variety of 2018-2019 planning meetings. On February 12, there was a staffing meeting with Deputy Director Randy MacLEAN, Superintendent of HR Todd Gjevre, and Supervisor of Student Services Jason Neville. A facilities review with CFO Marilyn Flaman and Superintendent of Operational Services Justin Arendt occurred as well. Our Learning Improvement Plan meeting with Director Kevin Garinger, Superintendent of Student Services Darrell Paproski and Superintendent of Learning Services Crandall Hrynkiw took place on February 15. All of these meetings were positive and reflective in preparation for the academic and social growth of our school. I am pleased to announce that we will be adding a position to our Educational Assistant personnel. A job posting will occur shortly.

Teen Aid is in the School on February 26 and 27. A note to parents went home before the Break about permission to be a part of these talks. A special thank you to our anonymous donor for picking up the cost of this educational opportunity.

On February 28, the Sask. Archaeological Society will be interacting with all grades in our School. They are bringing hands on activities to educate the students about the past. Thanks to the SCC for paying for the membership to provide this opportunity for our students.

Imperial School was selected to partake in the PISA test (Programme for International Students Assessment). It is a testing of students from 80 different countries who were born in 2002. Students have registered and completed the survey, and testing will follow in April. These results will help determine the academic standing of Canadian students.

Congratulations to the nine students who successfully completed their classroom portion of the Driver Training course. Also congratulations to Chantelle Remlinger and Trevor Mooney for competing in the Saskatchewan Winter Games in Shooting. Chantelle brought home a silver medal in Target Shooting Air Pistol Team Mixed. Chantelle and Trevor did not medal, but both placed in other categories as well. Congratulatory greetings to many of our students who are playing provincial or league games in hockey. I wish all of you good luck in this highly competitive winter sport.

Lastly, congratulations and thank you to all of the community members and students who supported the Jump Rope for Heart Campaign. As a school community, we raised $1265.00. Great job, everyone!

Just a reminder that March 17 will be our Penny-ante Carnival at the School from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. There will be a canteen, bouncers, games of chance, musical chairs, face painting, and a silent auction. As in past years, we are looking for donations of baking. The SCC and the Imperial School staff will be providing this opportunity for community members, parents, and students to have fun together!

On March 26, grades 7-12 students will be bussed to Table Mountain to participate in skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. There will be a note coming home and a fundraising activity is in the planning stage.

Also coming next month, students and visitors will see posters in support of “MarchOutRacism”. Lessons on this theme will resonate in all classrooms. Please reflect on the atrocities and acts of unkindness in the world and at home that grow out of racism.

I hope to see all of you at the Carnival!

Jump Rope for Heart 2018

This year we held Jump Rope for Heart on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 13. The afternoon consisted of our grade K-10 students participating in a variety of artistic, physical, and nutritious activities. Students were broken into eight groups with our grade nine and ten students acting as group leaders. Our leaders were amazing; the elementary students had a blast with them! The eight stations our students took part in were: Single rope skipping, double-dutch skipping, movement games, parachute games, nutrition break, musical chairs, mural of 100 hearts (for 100 th day of school), and heart ninja crafts. Prizes were awarded for musical chairs winners and a draw was held for students who could complete 100 successful skips in a row. We had a fantastic time raising $1265.00 and awareness for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation! Thank you to all who donated to the campaign!

In Motion Report

Welcome back from the February Break! This always signals that spring is around the corner. With that in mind, we have gone back to having morning recess outside and in motion has come to an end for this school year. This season of in motion has been fantastic! It was wonderful to see so many committed and motivated high school mentors coming to the gym bright and early with smiles on their faces to lead games and stretches. The elementary students were also excellent participants! I even decided to give the Grade 5/6 students each a special plastic reward pendant for their fabulous participation as leaders in the elementary end. All elementary students have received their reward “feet” for their efforts running laps each morning. Thanks, Cougars, for doing your best, as always!

Mrs. Jade Van Damme

Jr. Curling

The curling season has come to an “end” at Imperial School. This season there were 11 enthusiastic students learning this fun sport. The Junior Curling Teams consisted of: Kayden Freeman, Harrison Mooney, Tyson Webster, Melissa Federspiel, Jamison Langlois, Paige Crittenden, JJ Webster, Cohen Sim, Jody Williams, Rylan Freeman and Preston Van Damme. It never ceases to amaze me how much young curlers improve in this short season. While watching the Olympics held in PyeongChang, I reflected on what a great sport this is for young people. Curling is certainly an exercise in problem solving, patience, and sportsmanship. What better skills would there be for any young person to practise?

On Tuesday, February 6, the Mixed and Boys teams travelled to Cudworth to participate in Pre-Districts. The Junior Boys first played Bellevue (a school we met at Districts last year) and lost, moving them to the B side. They then played Bruno and won to continue on in the competition! The Junior Boys suffered a loss after this, but they played like champs! The Mixed Team first faced Muenster and lost, moving them to the B Side. They also played Bruno next and won to continue on in the B Side. They lost their next game to Middle Lake One, but played with pride for Imperial School! Congratulations on another great year of curling, Cougars!

February was a busy month for the Senior Curling team. We were busy with practices, and had an exhibition game against Watrous (Team 1) which we won. Mackenzie Van Damme played lead, Kayden Freeman as second, Lexie Nelson as third and Jonathon Nelson as skip. Pre-Districts were on Monday, February 5 in Watrous, where we played four games in a row and won the B Side alongside the A Side winner Watrous (Team 2). We advanced to Districts which was on Friday, February 9 in Foam Lake and unfortunately lost our games. Thank you to Kayden who played both on the junior and senior curling teams!! We had a fast paced but enjoyable and fun season!

Miss Hayter

Jr. Basketball

Our Junior co-ed basketball season is wrapping up! Our team recently played at a tournament in Lanigan on February 10.

Our season will wrap up after the Break. Come out and cheer us on in Watrous on February 26! We will be playing Humboldt and Winston in back to back games!

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive this season, and to all the athletes who worked so hard to build their skills this season. A special thanks to Jonathan Nelson for being such an awesome assistant coach to our junior players.

Ms. Danyluk (coach) Sr. Girls Basketball

The Senior Girls Basketball team is almost finished their season. We will be playing our league final on Tuesday, February 27 against Watrous in Imperial. We may also play one more home game against Humboldt, dependent on scheduling. Finally, we will be heading to Southey on Saturday, March 10 for conferences where we will be going up against teams from Churchbridge, Peepeekisis, and of course Southey. Good luck girls!

Miss Samantha Saelhof

Sr. Boys Basketball

The Senior Boys Basketball team improved drastically over the season. With a team full of grade 9's and 10's, it is exciting to see what the future has in store. Great season, boys.

Mr. Hart SRC

During the month of February, the SRC has been quite busy planning new activities and fundraisers for Imperial School. The SRC held their monthly Survivor on February 7 and played a game called No Man’s Land. Students had to hide behind different obstacles that were placed on the floor from foam balls being thrown from the stage. The entire school had fun, including the teachers who all had a turn throwing foam balls at the opposing Survivor team. We had a Cookie gram sale on February 14. In total, the grade 7-10 Home Ec. classes, and the SRC made over 300 cookies and iced them as well! The 170 bags of assorted cookies were all sold out by the end of the lunch hour. We had a Formal Day on Valentine's Day and everyone looked snazzy! On Thursday, February 1, we had our annual Pancake and Sausage breakfast before our curling bonspiel. Everyone had loads of fun! At the end of the bonspiel, the following teams took the podium.First place: Team TakeoutJonathan Nelson, Jake Martens, Harrison Moony, Tyson Webster, and Alina KhrystychSecond place: Team Sweep RightBrayden Taylor, Maguire Scheidt, Trevor Moony, and Carter MoonyThird place: Team OutsidersKayden Freeman, Emily McKerlie, Garet Poitras, and Ryan Nelson

Everyone enjoyed their time curling and afterward we handed out prizes. The prizes were potato chips, pop, candy, and the legendary GOLDEN PLUNGER. We even had prizes for the team with the best costume. The winners of the best costume were The Babies (Lexi Nelson, Chantelle Remlinger, Katie Brown, Jamison Langlois, and Romeo Sanchez). The SRC is hosting another fundraiser. This time we are selling perogies and cabbage rolls. The Perogie Sale will take place over the next few weeks. The order forms were distributed on February 15 and will be due on Wednesday, March 7. In addition, the students will have a chance to take part in our Taco lunch on Tuesday, March 6.

Imperial SCC

The Imperial SCC held our Annual General Meeting on February 5. The SCC is happy to welcome Teri Danyluk, Kelly Moysey and Vern Nolting.

The SCC extends a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Chantelle Remlinger and Trevor Mooney who participated in the Saskatchewan Winter Games over the break. Chantelle brought home some hardware – a silver medal in Target Shooting Air Pistol Team Mixed! Both students represented our community well.

Our school is promoting healthy snack choices for students who get a little peckish during class. It’s hard to learn with a grumbling tummy! The SCC is piloting a healthy snack program with the support of a generous anonymous donation. Last week the SCC provided bowls of fresh fruit for students in each classroom. After evaluation and feedback, the SCC will consider continuing the program.

Look for an SCC sponsored TWIST on the traditional READING BEE coming soon. This project looks like it’s going to be fun and packed with prizes!

If life has you busy and you cannot commit to serve on the SCC but would still like to help on occasion or with certain projects, please give us a shout. Many hands make light work!

Saskatchewan Winter Games

The Saskatchewan Winter Games is multi-sport games, and like the Olympic games, it's held every four years. This year, North Battleford hosted the games from February 18 - 24, 2018. In total, more than 1500 athletes from across Saskatchewan competed in one of 17 sports in the games. Target Shooting was one of the sports. Two students from Imperial competed for their chance on the podium. Chantelle Remlinger shot in five different events in10M air pistol and air rifle. Trevor Mooney competed in three air rifle events. Both athletes did exceedingly well, shooting several personal bests (PB) scores in both the team and individual competitions. Even with stiff competition, Trevor and Chantelle made it

to the finals in their individual events--something to celebrate. In the Mixed Air Pistol Team Event, Chantelle and her teammate Seth Norman won a silver medal.

Congratulations to both Chantelle and Trevor for not only making it to the Games but for doing so well. Give them a high five the next time you see them! Imperial is proud of your achievements!

Raising Readers

Each month, Imperial School’s Literacy Team will feature a “key” from the resource 7 Keys to Comprehension. Using the same terminology at home as is being used at school to talk about reading is a great way to support your child’s learning.

Featured “Key”: Questioning

What does it mean?

Readers ask questions before, during and after reading. Asking questions helps readers engage with the text, clarify thinking, and deepen understanding. Questions can be thick (deep thinking) or thin (quick), and readers should practice using both types. Answers to “thin” questions can be found in the text and help to clarify content. “Thick” questions take longer to answer, as the answers cannot be found directly in the text. These deep thinking questions require the reader to access another source (background knowledge/other references) and help expand understanding.

Readers ask questions to:

Clarify meaning. Speculate about text yet to be read. Determine an author’s style, intent, content, or format. Focus attention on specific components of the text (setting, plot, characters, text features). Locate a specific answer.

Show your child that even you have questions when you read! Start with any book and look at the cover together. Talk with your child about whatever questions come to mind. Some will be answered by reading the book, others may not be, and that’s okay. Asking the questions is what’s most important!

Some ways you can encourage your child to start asking questions:

1. Have a discussion with the author: As you read, think of questions you wish you could ask the author.2. Play “I Wonder”: As you read, talk about the things the text makes you wonder about. As the book unfolds, your

questions may be answered.3. Use questioning language: Ask things like, “I wonder…”, “How come...?”, “What does this mean?”, “Your

question made me think of another question…”4. Continue to ask questions: After reading, talk about what questions were answered and about what new

questions your child may have.Reading is an active sport that exercises your brain, but the greatest workout only comes when your child is engaged and interacting with the page (Zimmerman & Hutchins, 2003). The wonder you inspire in your child through questioning keeps their imagination alive and helps them make sense of the world. Thank you for being a part of that journey!
