CLASSROOM NEWS

K-1: MS. JEANA - It has been a wonderful start to the month of December! We have had two delightful visitors. Our first visitor was from 1854 Authority and her name was Marni. She came to our class to talk about different animals around our area. She also brought furs for the students to look at and touch. The students had a blast learning about the animals, seeing what they look like, and how the animals fur felt. Our second guest was from the National Monument and her name was Beth. She came into our classroom to help the students recreate models of traditional wigwams. The students collected the

twigs for the structure of the wigwam and the birch bark was provided to us. It was great to have those two guests come into our classroom to teach us great things. For math, the students have been working with coins. The students know the name of the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. They also know the values of each of those coins. Recently the students have been adding nickels with pennies and they are working hard. We have finished the alphabet and the students know the letter names and the letter sounds. The students have been increasing their sight word vocabulary. It is very important to read to your child every night for at least 15 minutes. Our Christmas program is coming along great and the students can’t wait to perform. See you there! Thank you,

2-3: MS. NIKKIHello families, The second and third grade class has been working very hard getting ready for the holiday program.  We have

learned about traditional shelters of different Native American groups and we are building models of birch bark houses.  They will

be on display at the holiday program.  We are learning about an animal that lives in Grand Portage for the holiday program too.

The students are practicing telling about their animal and singing their holiday songs.

In reading time our class has been practicing a reader's theater script.  We put on the first reader's theater, "The Magic Swan

Geese,"  last week.  This week we started reading our next theater production called, "Tiger, Brahman and Jackal."  We will be

ready to show this play in January.  Stay tuned for the date and time.  Doing reader's theater is a great way for students to practice

reading fluently as well as their reading comprehension skills.

Our paragraph writing is going very well.  The students are practicing putting in interesting words and transition words into their

writing.  Their latest paragraphs are coming home today!

Our math time has been spent working on fractions for both grades and the third graders are also working on decimals. We are

adding fractions and decimals in third grade as well.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Holiday Program on Wednesday.  The students should come to their classrooms around

5:30 to get ready.  I hope your holiday break is warm and wonderful.

4-6: MS. BRIDGETThe last few weeks have gone by very fast. We’ve been working on our wigwams, making ornaments and other Christmas decorations, finishing up our northland animal boards for the upcoming holiday program as well as practicing our songs. Since this is the last newsletter for 2017 the 4th – 6th grade would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

CULTURAL HOME / SCHOOL LIAISON: MS. BONITAThe past two weeks we have been working on our Wigwam project. They are starting to look awesome! The students are so artistic and some have decorated their wigwams with trees, furniture, and doorways. We are hoping to finish them by the Holiday Program so we can set up a display.

Merry Christmas!Bonita
