I have been attempting to develop a system that integrates the various traditions of various metaphysical types. The German philosopher Kant tried to survey the various forms of metaphysics that existed in the west as the 18th Century came to a close. He found that the approaches had four basic antithetical characteristics, infinite against finite, necessary against contingent, simple against complex, and free against mechanistic and predetermined. I discovered a rough similarity between these opposites and the opposing trigrams of the Chinese metaphysical system favored by Confucius: the I Ching.

It seemed to me that Mountain Trigram was the simple and Lake was the complex, Water Well Trigram was the closed system, and Flame was the open, the free. It seemed to me that Heaven Trigram was the infinite and Earth was the finite, Wind was the necessary (that gently penetrated everything and Thunder symbolized the weather that was its contingent expression.

When I thought about it, it seemed that these symbolized the basic tempers of art and literature: Heaven was romantic and Earth was realistic, Mountain was impressionistic and Lake was post-impressionistic, Wind was classical and Thunder was expressionistic, Water Well was Baroque and absolutistic and legalistic and Flame was Cubist and experimental and existential. Philosophically, Mountain was empirical and Lake was dialectical and ideological, Heaven was transcendental and Earth was materialistic, Water Well was rationalist

and traditional and Flame was existential, Wind was idealistic and classical and Thunder was pragmatic.

In basic interests, Heaven was magic and Earth was science, Wind was metaphysics and Thunder was business and applied science. Mountain was philosophy and art and Lake was literature and dogma, Water Well was government and law and Flame was art and music and experimental design.

After reading Arnold Toynbee’s study of history, it seemed the Heaven Trigram symbolized the primitive origins of culture and the problems of that challenge those cultures, when they meet these challenges by raids and warfare, the enter into the realm of the Flame Trigram. When they settle down in city states, they enter Mountain and when they develop ruling elites they enter Wind. When those ruling elites develop universal states, they enter Water Well and when these universal states decline and their internal proletariat forms a universal church, you have the beginnings of a Lake Trigram phase.

When a city state, a republic, adopts industrial productivity and democracy as a utilitarian alternative to slavery and subjugation of the internal proletariat, you enter the Earth Trigram, when the industrial state develops market capitalism, you enter Thunder Trigram.

From the point of view of the orientations developed by Fromm in works like “Man for Himself,” we might say the Heaven Trigram was aboriginal productivity and Earth was utilitarian product, Flame was exploitative and Water Well was receptive, Mountain was a segregation phase of hoarding and Wind was a refining phase. Lake would be a recombination aspect of Water Well and Thunder Trigram would be marketing.

If we were to apply these to the processes of evolution, would seem that Heaven would be mutation as a genetic source and Earth would be phenotype as an adapted product. Wind would be an adaptive peak and its genetic set point and Thunder would be the evolution as entropy, the extinction and natural selection bearing on maladaptive genetic expressions that drive genotypes to these adaptive peaks. Mountain would be genetic isolation and speciation and Lake would be hybridization and recombination and gene pools and population genetics. Flame would be competition and competitive exclusion and Water Well would be replication and reproduction and feedback mechanism that maintain organism and population homeostasis.

In the I Ching, the Trigrams are formed from combinations of broken yin lines and unbroken yang lines. The different trigrams are set off by their various forms of yin and yang, youngest son and daughter, middle son and daughter, eldest son and daughter. It seemed to me that the basic idea here was the opposition between thermodynamic energy as eldest son yang and information and mathematical structure potential as eldest daughter yin. In the Earth Trigram, the eldest daughter information is combined with middle daughter quantum mechanics and youngest daughter space time relativity, in the Thunder Trigram, eldest son yang thermodynamics is combined with middle daughter and youngest daughter.

This opposition between Earth Trigram and its emphasis on structure and mathematics and Thunder Trigram and its emphasis on energy thermodynamics seems to set up what might be called an Earth Element Theater, a tangible world of visible dimensions and measurements. Opposed to this is the Air Element Theater of the Wind and Heaven Trigrams and an intangible world in which the existential

and phenomenological, the infinitesimal here and now of inner thought and feeling generates a youngest son yang alternative to the relativistic space time public world of youngest daughter yin. So also does the attempt to find some sort of common meaning, some answer to the intangible question why? generate another opposite in middle son yang attempts to integrate all things, opposite to the atoms and particles of middle daughter yin.

Between the infinite WHY in middle son yang and the infinitesimal existential WHO in youngest son yang and the quantum mechanical WHAT in middle daughter yin is the theater if the Fire Element in Flame Trigram and Mountain Trigram that connects the infinitesimal atoms of phenomenology in youngest son yang with the finite atoms and quanta of science in middle daughter yin, this is where the Pneuma Spirit of youngest son yang connects with the Psyche Mind of eldest daughter yin reason and the Soma Body of middle daughter yin physics to generate the empirical trinity that is Mountain Trigram that changes to the existential trinity that is Flame Trigram as eldest daughter mind yields to the energy Karma of eldest son yang to generate the three guna of the Flame Trigram, Sattva Jiva in youngest son yang, Raja Energy Karma in eldest son yang, and Tamas Physics and Physiology in middle daughter yin. In this interaction, eldest son yang thermodynamics is the HOW and eldest daughter yin information systems in the LOGOS WHEN.

The final theater, the water element theater, is the collective, the cosmic theater. Here we connect the associations in space and time that are youngest daughter yin space time relativity with the infinite integration in Allah Elohim Brahman Nirvana that is middle son yang and form the Water Well Trigram out of the eldest daughter yin aspect

of the LOGOS STORY WHEN and the Lake Trigram out of the eldest son yang THERMODYNAMICS ENERGY HOW. This is the cosmogenic collective unconscious alternative in synchronicity to the individual consciousness in Flame and Mountain.

But what is the source of these four theaters? The brain is divided into two hemispheres, a fact oriented left hemisphere and a meaning oriented right hemisphere. Earth hemisphere is divided into a planning and action orient frontal lobe and sensory association areas in the lobes behind a great fold in each hemisphere called the “central sulcus.” What if we call the frontal lobe action plans youngest son yang WHO and the sensory association areas youngest daughter yin WHERE (they deal with combination of data that tells us how things we experience can come together in our notions of time and space)? What if we call the fact oriented left hemisphere associations and actions that deal with specific situations and objects the youngest daughter yin WHAT and the meaning oriented opposites in the right hemisphere the middle son yang WHY?

Now all we have to do is find the location of the eldest daughter yin LOGOS WHEN in the brain and the eldest son yang Thermodynamic HOW. That solution is simple, the location of information based on when and where it happened is coordinated by a structure at the base of the cerebral cortex called the “hippocampus.” The thermodynamics of movement and action are carried out by structures called the “basal ganglia” supplemented by centers in the brain stem that coordinate the autonomic nervous system and areas controlling wakefulness and attention. This is certainly the brain area in charge of eldest son yang energy balance.

The Wind and Heaven Trigram executive function monitors in the Air Element, the frontal lobes of the brain are what are sometimes called the “Superego” or the “Parent” voice of the brain. The attention and energy activation functions in Flame and Mountain Trigram that activate them are often called the “Ego” or the “Adult” voice of the brain (sometimes it is called “the Interpreter Module”). The Earth and Thunder Trigram sensory stimuli that develop into the adult are often said to arise from brain stem sources that are called “Libido” and this is often called the “Child” voice of the brain. Finally, there are even deeper roots, a collective unconscious emerging from synchronicity, from the dreamtime brain roots described by Carl Jung, this in Water Element, in Water Well and Lake Trigram, something Jung called “Anima” and “Animus” and I often call “the Egg” voice.

We might consider the great pyramid to be a model of a mythological brain. The top of the pyramid is the youngest son WHO that points outward to the world it seek to understand. Run a line down into the earth at its base and that is the youngest daughter yin WHERE of sensory associations. One corner of the great pyramid points to the other pyrimids and that is the great middle son yang WHY that integrates all things. The opposite corner points toward the boats on the Nile, at that is the middle daughter yin WHAT for the pyramid is actually only another boat on the Nile that has come to rest where we find it. Another corner of the pyramid points up the Nile, that is the HOW for it is the thermodynamic flux of eldest son yang in the rains and water of the Nile flood that has created the Egypt of the Nile, and the opposite corner of the pyramid that points down the Nile is the WHEN, for the Nile, like all sequences in this world, like the flow of nerve impulses up and down the nervous system is a river of time.

One aspect of this that can be confusing is the Chinese notion of fine elements. This is simply an extension of the four element system. The Chinese add Wood and Metal to the Greek system of Fire and Air and Water and Earth. Wood is basically made of air and water using the energy that is released by fire when it burns. So Wood belongs between Fire and Water. Water is held together by electrical forces and so is Metal, but with metals there is greater sharing of electrons, so Metal belongs between Water and Earth as a symbol of youngest daughter yin space time association. Sometimes, in India, Ether is inserted as a fifth element to the Fire, Air, Water, Earth sequence. Again, it belongs between Fire and Air as a symbol of some of the alternative dissociations that might occur in a cosmos where infinite flux makes the improbable probable.

So how do we generate a fourth dimension from this system? That terns out to be quite simple, when you move inward with this system integration changes into pleasure and disintegration changes into pain, energy changes into passion and information changes into reason, infinitesimal dissociation changes into here and now time and finite association changes into language and communication. The relationship between this cube within the cube, this octahedron within the octahedron, this pyramid with the pyramid, this tetrahedron with the tetrahedron generates a fifth dimensional system, that can be extended by similar processes into the infinite.

Now let us imagine this is the cave allegory of Plato’s Republic. The Heaven Trigram is the Sun and the Wind Trigram is the Form of the Good. The Lake Trigram is the Cave in which the prisoners are trapped and the prisoners are Mountain Trigram. The fire lighting the cave is the Flame Trigram and the Walkway in the cave where objects are

carried is the Water Well Trigram and the objects that cast shadows on the wall are Earth Trigram and the shadows are Thunder Trigram. To use the system of Alfred North Whitehead, Heaven Trigram is God and Wind Trigram is Eternal Objects (Values). Earth Trigram is Actual Occasions (Facts) and Thunder Trigram is Events. Mountain Trigram is Prehensions (Impressions) and Flame Trigram is process and creative novelty. Water Well Trigram is Organism (and the mechanism that support it). Lake Trigram is Nexi, Concrescences.

As we develop as persons, we move from Water Element into Earth and Fire and Air, from Egg to Child to Adult to Parent. But society, as described above, moves the opposite direction. The external cube is the society cube, the internal cube is the personal cube, trapped within the social cave like Plato’s prisoners. In depictions of the wheel of Karma, it is this downward movement into the cave that is often symbolized, but in the mandala of the Four Directions used by Native Americans, the symbolism involves the release of the Child Mind from its entrapment back into the light from which it came.

This allows us to view a “House with Many Mansions” which different approaches simply view the multidimensional object in various ways. South Asian Buddhism is the middle son yang of the Heaven Trigram and Hinduism becomes the eldest son yang, Yoga and Jainism become youngest son yang. The English open up the Mountain Trigram to empirical philosophy with Locke in eldest daughter yin, Berkeley in youngest son and Hume in middle daughter. This wheel can be bent into a octahedron, a sphere, or a cube by pulling the rim into a single point opposite eldest daughter yin. The 12 sides of the resulting octahedron divide the eight trigrams from each other. The personality disorders will work to separate the trigrams, as will the 12 Olympian gods and goddesses and the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Schizoid aspects of Hindi border Wind into Heaven and Schizotypal aspects of Bengali border Heaven into Flame. Sadistic and Negativist aspects of Japanese border Mountain into Flame.

Japanese Zen can be Negativistic and Shinto can be Sadistic. American English New Age Religion can be Narcissistic. American Protestant Pentecostal worship can be Histrionic. Histrionic forms of Italian and French Catholic worship may involve saints like Joan of Arc. Portuguese forms of worship involving Brazilian VooDoo and Roman Catholic worship can show borderline splitting between good and evil. Daoism and Chinese Buddhism can be Avoidant. Islam has its Masochistic and

Drug Cults associated with Italian and Spanish Mafia can be antisocial and some forms of Bengali shamanism and Hinduism show Schizotypal variants. South Asian Hinduism and Buddhism can be Schizoid and Paranoid. Amish German speaking Protestants can demonstrate Paranoid reactions to pollution by the outer world. Some forms of Moslem and Hindu worship in the Punjab, including some forms of the Vedic faith, can have a Compulsive manifestation, demonstrating religions variants of what would be personality disorders if manifest in solitary individuals.

Are these descriptions real? Of course not, they are all shadows cast on the wall of the cave. Japanese is not naturally sadistic or Chinese avoidant. The point is that all relationships are complex because society and the human brain are complex. Complex relationship can be viewed from many angles and there cannot be a single correct interpretation. The search for final truth and final meaning is hopeless because of the complexity of the medium, human neural tissue, human communication, human language associations.

Even so, what edges emerge in the octahedron, the wheel, Heaven Trigram tends to emerge as an infinite flux that make the improbable probable, as a magic defined by an appeal to ignorance and an inspirational ethic. Its opposite is the finite defined by science, by an ad hominem rooted in testimony by experts, and a utilitarian ethic. Wind Trigram is the Classical and its virtue ethic, its circular reasoning. Flame Trigram is the existential, the Cubist, an experimental design characterized by hasty generalization and an existential ethic. Mountain Trigram is impressionist and empirical, philosophical and rational, its fallacy is special pleading, its ethic is rational individualism,

rational self interest. The opposite of Flame is Water Well Trigram and Baroque Art and Absolutist Government, with reasoning rooted in the appeal to authority and a duty ethic. The opposite of Mountain is Lake Trigram and its ideology and dogmatic literature arising out of an appeal to emotion and out of a divine command and a human concern ethic. Finally Thunder Trigram is pragmatic and expressionistic, its reasoning is the opposite of Wind. Wind is elitist and aristocratic, Thunder is vulgar, hedonistic, and based on an appeal to numbers.

Heaven is the realm of food gathers and aboriginals and Flame of their raids and wars, Mountain of the city states that emerge when they settle down, the realm of ancient Athens and Sparta. In the West, Wind Trigram is monarchy and aristocracy. the Hellenistic states established by Alexander the Great, and Water Well trigram is universal states like the Roman Empire. Lake Trigram is the resulting universal churches like Christianity in ancient Rome and Mahayana Chinese Buddhism in ancient China, Hinduism emerging in the empires of ancient India, and Islam emerging from the empires of the ancient Near and Middle East.

Earth is the democratic and utilitarian republics that emerge with the choice of industrialization and progress over slavery and Thunder is the vulgar marketing and consumer capitalism that emerge when wealth over extends their development and activities. Marxism proves that the industrial state can be diverted toward totalitarian universal states like the Soviet Union and Marxist China that can develop their own version of a duty ethic, and appeal to authority, a Marxist absolutism. They can form their own ideology, their own twisted version of the universal church that characterizes the appeal to emotion and the divine command ethics of Lake Trigram, in this case the divine commands are those of the exalted rulers.

Sometimes there is a rough coordination with geology and geography with the global mind of the meme mocking the brain of the person. Volcanic areas emerge as schizotypal realms and sedimentary areas as dependent, highlands tend to encourage the schizoid and lowlands the histrionic, tropical areas seem to encourage the avoidant and their glaciated opposites the narcissistic, canyons and mountain passes seem to feature the paranoid and seacoasts the borderline, plateau areas the compulsive and oceanic areas seem to encourage the antisocial pirate, islands and peninsulas the negativistic, sadistic individualism and internal river valleys encourage the opposite in depression and masochism. Witness the avoidant schizoid and schizotypal aspects of primitive cultures in place like Papua New Guinea and the histrionic (Protestant Christian) and narcissistic and borderline opposite that characterizes the cultures emerging in temperate coastal areas like Amsterdam and New York City.

It seems to indicate that structural relationships in evolution, in the human brain, in human culture trump everything else, why shouldn’t we consider the possibility that these structural relationships, the allegory of the Cave, this enlarged Platonic Allegory, the engorged I Ching, extends into the very depths of existence itself, at least as it is imagined and envisioned by that overdeveloped organ that attempts to perceive it, of course I am referring to this outrageous complexity that is the brain of the human animal.

Where Pannenberg maintains that God only exists in the coming Kingdom which exists only in the ultimate future not in our finite world of relativistic time so that the God of this ultimate coming would be our WHY caught up in the Holy Ghost that is the WHEN of this logos of which Jesus is the WHO uttering the prophetic word (creative logos). An its opposite in the Thunder Trigram of Daniel R. Books and E. O. Wiley in “Evolution as Entropy” which presents the HOW of the means by which this ultimate WHEN unfolds. A Flame Trigram described by Brian Swimme in “The Universe as a Green Dragon,” and its Water Well Trigram opposite as described by Richard Tarnas in “Cosmos and Psyche.” And finally, a Mountain Trigram of youngest son yang Spirit and eldest daughter yin Mind and middle daughter yin Body as described by Ernest Holmes in “The Science of Mind,” and its Lake Trigram opposite in the Daoism of Zhi Gang Shi, as described in his book “The Power of Soul.” Mountain is the simple source and Lake is its complex opposite. Flame gives us the freedom and Water Well gives us the system structure. Heaven gives us the infinite flux that makes the improbable probable and Wind is the improbable ideal that emerges over an infinite of times and places, the evercoming Kingdom of God. Earth Trigram is what we can see of that coming and Thunder Trigram gives us the thermodynamics of its emergence, the natural selection of energy dissipative structures that become feeling as the motion turns inward to become emotion and thought as the information turns inward to reflect on itself, thus disintegration generates suffering and pain and integration generates pleasure, the highest levels of integration generate joy and beauty in the Heaven Trigram, love and

compassion in Wind, peace and harmony in Water Well and faith and hope in Lake Trigram. These replace the anger that disintegration brings in Flame, the fear that it brings in Mountain, the sadness it brings in Earth Trigram and the hatred and revulsion that it brings in Thunder.

One of the results of the work of Ernest Holmes and The Science of Mind book is the connection between the trigrams and the trinities that characterize so many philosophic and religious systems. Holmes originally was the leader of what was called the Institute of Religious Science and Philosophy. This suggests the Water Well Trigram and the connection between the Religion and Philosophy and Science trinity of the French Philosopher Comte and the sequence of middle son yang, eldest daughter yin, and youngest daughter yin that makes up the Water Well Trigram of the I Ching. This is the Buddhist trinity of Sanga, community of believers, youngest daughter yin association, Dharma, the moral law, eldest daughter yin reason and moral wisdom, and Buddhamind/Nirvana, the integration of all things in compassion and peace, middle son yang, but in the reverse order of that of Comte.

Ernest Holmes put great emphasis on the Mountain Trigram trinity of Spirit, Pneuma, youngest son yang, Law of Mind, Psyche, eldest daughter yin, and Body, Soma, middle daughter yin. He also noted the similarity of the Christian trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, to the trinity of Plotinus of Hen One, Nous- Cosmic Mind, and Psyche, embodied mind, which we connect with middle son yang, eldest daughter yin, and youngest son yang of the Wind Trigram.

That the dialect of the German philosopher Hegel: Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis is basically a restatement of the dialectical trinity of the Lake

Trigram, youngest daughter yin association and collective thesis, eldest son yang energy flux and resulting disassociation and antithesis, middle son yang integration and synthesis, seems obvious. It also seems obvious that this dialectic would appeal to Chinese thought since Chinese culture appears to be a synthesis formed of a Confucian thesis, a Daoist antithesis, and a Chinese Buddhist synthesis.

So the Hindu culture seems to use the trigram of Heaven for its trinity of gods, Shiva as the destructive energy flux of Heaven in eldest son yang, Visnu as its preserving integration in middle son yang Brahman Vedanta and Brahma as its creative interpretation in avatar after creative avatar in youngest son yang. There is also an echo of Wind Trigram in the trinity of Brahman as the Hen One middle son yang, and Dharma as the law of mind and morality in eldest daughter yin and Atman as the Creative Spirit in youngest son yang avatars, Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, etc.. The Flame Trigram seems to be represented by the three Gunas of Sattva, the pure spirit of youngest son yang, Rajas, the creative energy of eldest son yang, Tamas, the embodied substance of middle daughter yin. Thunder trigram appears to be the Buddhist trinity of suffering in middle daughter yin disintegration and pain, flux in the thermodynamic energy of eldest son yang, and no self in the dissipative energy structure associations that are the space time relativity of youngest daughter. The Earth Trigram appears to be the basic trinity of science, middle daughter yin as quantum mechanics and particle theory, youngest daughter yin as space time relativity, and eldest daughter yin as systems theory, information theory, cybernetics, logic and mathematics. This changes into Mountain Trigram in the laws of the German evolutionist, Bernard Rensch, Evolution Above the Species Level, laws of causation in middle daughter yin, laws of

coherence in eldest daughter, laws of parallelisms in youngest son yang.

As discussed elsewhere, philosophy appears to be a long trip through the dialectic of these trigrams. The early beginnings of philosophy seem to start in Flame Trigram, using the sequence of philosophers found in Bertrand Russell’s A History of Western Philosophy, the Milesian School with basic elements of middle daughter yin, Pythagoras with the soul and youngest son yang, Heraclitus with flux and eldest son yang. Now there is a shift to Mountain Trigram and principles of reason with Parmenides, some attempt to develop a theory of reason and mind in Empedocles, Anaxagoras, the Atomists lay the basic foundations for particle theory in middle daughter yin and for the notion of monads of phenomenology in youngest son yang, Protagoras explores the rules of thought in eldest daughter yin.

The Wind Trigram ideal is explored by Socrates and youngest son yang, Plato and middle son yang integration, Aristotle and eldest daughter yin logic. The Cynics and Skeptics will return the focus to the debate in Mountain Trigram, the Epicureans will focus on the physical world and the atoms of middle daughter, the Stoics will take the focus to the moral law of eldest daughter and Plotinus will shift the focus to the Wind Trigram and middle son yang in the Hen One, here it will remain with Saint Augustine and Christianized Platonism, till the focus is gradually brought back to the eldest daughter and the logic of Aristotle, climaxing in the theology of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

With the renaissance, there is a shift. Machiavelli looks at the influence of political power in eldest son yang. Francis Bacon develops a focus on the middle daughter yin of visible fact, and Hobbes on the youngest

daughter yin of political associations in the space time world. Now we are moving from Thunder Trigram to Earth Trigram, but Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibnitz take the focus back to Wind Trigram, Descartes in the mathematics and logic of eldest daughter, Spinoza in the God of the integration that is middle son yang, and Leibnitz in the monads that are the phenomenological atoms of infinitesimal youngest son yang.

With Locke, the focus moves to the empirical Mountain Trigram and the mental aspect of eldest daughter yin. Berkeley returns the focus to the phenomenology that is youngest son yang and Hume to the skeptical emphasis on fact that will generate and empirical emphasis of middle daughter yin.

Rousseau returns the focus to the youngest daughter yin of political associations, Kant puts that focus on the logical and moral implications of philosophy in eldest daughter. Hegel takes the ideas of Marx and develops an attempt at synthesis and integration in middle son yang. Marx will complete this sequence through the Water Well Trigram with a dialect focused on the political aspects of associations in youngest daughter. Schopenhauer and Nietzsche will explore the irrational complexities of Lake Trigram considered by Rousseau in youngest daughter yin by a focus in Schopenhauer on integration in middle son and creative energy of eldest son in Nietzsche. The Utilitarians will take this focus back to Earth Trigram, Mill will focus on eldest daughter and middle daughter and Spencer will develop a naturalism focused on youngest daughter yin dissipative structure associations. With Bergson and William James, the focus comes to Thunder Trigram and eldest son yang again. This is the Heaven Trigram with Shiva as logs to the base e, Vishnu as circular integration in pi, and Brahma as its development in the phenomenology of the square root of minus one, the circle turned in on itself into the complex number plane. The Earth Trigram completes and complements Heaven with the unit 1 as the WHAT and the principle of equivalence, of the equal sign, as the WHERE, and zero as the WHEN base point. Out of this ideal system in the theory and formula, the higher order algebra of Wind Trigram, we get trigonometry and analytic geometry in euler’s theorem in Mountain Trigram, arithemetic in Earth Trigram, statistics and probability in Thunder Trigram, topology in Flame Trigram, calculus in Heaven Trigram, set theory in Water Well Trigram and group theory in Lake Trigram.

The WHEN becomes the grammar and structure of the language and the WHERE becomes the language community. The HOW is the sum total of the evolution of the language and its usage. The WHY is the levels of organization structure of the language and moral notions are an aspect of that structure when the person using the language enjoys special status as a member of the language community for which the language was originally designed, see Kovesi, Moral Notions.

Basically, the WHAT is science and the WHERE is social science, the HOW is applied science, the WHEN is logic and grammar and rules of usage, the WHO is phenomenology and aesthetics, the WHY is pleasure at the level of the body, joy and love at the level of the spirit, and religious joy and love and morality at the level of the integration of the larger whole in the Holy Nirvana Brahman Hen mystical One.

You can see these geometric principles at work in nature. Suppose the Magnolia group were to symbolize the Heaven Trigram and its more regular and simple disposition in the wind flowers (genus Anemone) might symbolize the Wind Trigram, the inferior ovary and the complex inflorescence of the carrot family might be an example of the Water Well Trigram and the even more complex structure of the flowers of the daisy family could be an example of the Lake Trigram.

Suppose the highly competitive adventurous exploration of the world by the palms were to symbolize the Flame Trigram and the local species development of Yucca plants like the Joshua tree, with its unique pollinating moth maturing inside its flower, might symbolize Mountain Trigram, the wind pollinated pragmatism of the sedge family could symbolize Thunder Trigram and its even more practical and energy

thrifty relatives in the grass family could symbolize Earth Trigram in turn. The virtue of this mathematics centered metaphysical system is that it moves with the grain of the physiology of the human brain and the morphology of the natural world. This is the sort of goal the authors of the I Ching had in mind when they first developed the system. Granted we have twisted it a bit, modified its presentation to work well with ideas from places outside of its origins, but the core of the original notion remains the same, a sensitivity to the endless dance of the yang energy of the world against the resistance of yin system and information, this is the relationship symbolized on the flag of South Korea.
