Hazelwood Elementary School2013-2014 Professional Development Plan
When students are learning it is because the adults working here are learning.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the Hazelwood faculty will study and implement the new State Eight Criterion with the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching and the new Common Core. The learning will drive our professional development. We will integrate this focus with other professional development needs over the course of the school year to improve student learning.
LITERACY
Reading Goal: All students will read accurately, fluently and with understanding.
Reading Targets: By Spring 2014 we will decrease by 10% the number of K-6 students that “Need Substantial Intervention” in fluency/accuracy (K-2) and informational text (Gr.3-6) as measured by DIBELS, WELPA, common district assessments, and/or Benchmark assessments
Expectations in Literacy
We will study (independently and collaboratively) the new State 8 & Danielson Framework for Teaching and Common Core and apply our learning to our instruction in literacy.
All general education classroom teachers will use the District Curriculum Frameworks/State GLE’s/Common Core to plan literacy instruction.
All general education classroom teachers will implement the Benchmark literacy program as adopted by the Edmonds School District (Guided Reading Groups, shared reading and word work)
All general education classroom teachers will strive to provide balanced literacy instruction according to district guidelines each day (reading & writing).
All teachers will use the gradual release of responsibility as a lens for teaching. All general education classrooms will instruct in the three venues of learning (individual,
small group, and whole group) for instruction. This includes conducting guided reading groups to target specific student needs.
All staff will continue to deepen their understanding of research based best practices in literacy instruction for struggling readers through the MTI process and professional development.
All K-6 teachers will administer assessment materials provided by the district (i.e. District and State assessments, Benchmark fluency/accuracy & comprehension assessments).
We will collect our data systemically through grade level databases (organized at the district level) in order to look at common assessments and make student centered, instructional decisions based on data for students at Tier 2 and Tier 3 within classrooms, as grade level teams, and through our work with Multi-Tiered Instruction.
We will learn how to examine student achievement data with the new Analytics website and go through training with Nancy Katims.

How we plan to use time and resources?
We aim to deepen our understanding of best practices in literacy instruction focusing on the following during our “Building times”: the new Common Core, the new State 8/Danielson Frameworks for Teaching. The third Wednesday of the month, before school, small groups will meet to study the Common Core/State 8, and Danielson Framework as pertains to literacy (See attached schedule). The Leadership Team, after consulting with Lara Drew, Maggie Cramer, and other CLP members will plan these sessions. We will spend time collaborating to:
Collaboratively and/or independently study the Common Core Collaboratively and/or independently study the new State 8 and Danielson
Framework for Teaching. Utilize the district “Literacy Implementation Guide” Effectively implement Guided Reading group instruction Effectively utilize the new book room leveled library Gather data and student evidence around learning targets and
professional discuss the data as grade level teams (DIBELS, Running records, CSA & Word Work)
Progress monitor levels of students achievement utilizing Excel spreadsheets
Utilize MTI meetings to collaborate around levels of student achievement and the implementation of interventions
Understand how our Benchmark materials shape the instruction within all classrooms
Understand who our readers are and addressing their needs in the most effective and intentional ways
How does instruction look different for Tier 1? Tier 2? and Tier 3 students? Continue to intervene with our struggling readers Effectively implement shared reading Effectively implement readers’ theater Effectively implement word work Collaboratively address the requirements of the newly adopted
Washington State Index of Achievement, especially the implications of the AMO targets.
Engage in collegial conversations about what challenges our students face and the most effective ways to address those challenges
Other best practices in literacy instruction
The 2013-2014 school year will start out with all classrooms using workshop model, including: explicit teaching, guided reading groups, independent reading. (a goal of 90 minutes total reading), shared reading, partner reading, talk, sharing/reflection, and

content learning. We will also begin the school year with a new book room/leveled library. We will need to learn about these materials, what strategies to implement when teaching with them and how they add to our instruction.
We will continue our explicit teaching of how to select books at students’ “Just Right” reading levels and providing students with access during independent reading through classroom libraries. All students should know how to select books and should be consistently reading in “just right books” throughout the school day. Information about choosing just right books, reading work going on in your classroom and information about learning targets and grade level expectations at your grade level will also be communicated with parents.
As a staff, we will hold each other accountable for consistency with our new literacy materials and work together to learn how to manage the materials, use the materials to support student learning and create the most effective learning environments to implement the new materials.
We will also work passionately to increase a love of literacy amongst our students.
The third Wednesday morning before school is set aside for work as professional learning communities. Teachers will collaborate on the above at this time.

MATHEMATICS
Math Goal:
Improve K-6 students mastery of basic math facts
Math Target:
Decrease by 10% the number of K-6 students that “Need Substantial Intervention” as measured by Math Expressions and common district assessments for basic facts
Expectations in Math
We will study (independently and collaboratively) the new State 8 & Danielson Framework for Teaching and Common Core and apply our learning to our instruction in mathematics.
We will use the Curriculum Frameworks and State GLE’s to plan our instruction and build a collective understanding of the newly released grade level expectations in math through strand work at staff meetings
We will commit to fidelity in the Math Expressions curriculum, materials, routines and procedures
According to our grade level expectations, we will provide, on average, 70 minutes of mathematics instruction per day
Work together to ensure consistency throughout our building and between grade levels
We will use Math Expressions assessments and district assessments to inform our instruction as well as student work
We will regularly provide engaging instruction for our students about basic math facts
We will administer frequent assessments on student mastery of their basic mathematics facts
We will work passionately to increase a love of learning and mathematics in ourselves and in our students

What will this work look like?
Monthly staff meeting time and portions of non-student days will be dedicated to building a clear, collective understanding of the Common Core and the new State 8/Danielson Frameworks for Teaching. The third Wednesday morning before school is set aside for work as professional learning communities. Teachers will collaborate on the above at this time. As grade levels we will identify students who struggle with their basic facts and/or in math in general. Together, we will discuss interventions that have been tried and brainstorm best practices for additional interventions to assist students. We will utilize district basic math fluency assessments and resources and progress monitor our students in basic math fluency at their grade level.
We will create meaningful plans for involving parents and volunteers.
We will continue to identify the Common Core for each grade level and will progressively move throughout the year to looking deeper into each mathematical strand (Numbers, Operations, Processes, Algebra, Data analysis-Statistics-and Probability, Geometry/Measurement). We will collaborate and work together by grade levels and across grade levels to improve math instruction and to troubleshoot how to intervene with struggling math students. We will examine connections and disconnects between the state standards and the Math Expressions program and work to complete missing gaps of content instruction. We will focus on the articulation and consistency of: What challenges are we facing with our student mathematicians?…how are we collectively addressing those challenges?
