Burg Rieneck - the European Castle for Guides and Scouts

Informations about the centerSituated above the idyllic small town of Rieneck and surrounded by thick walls and battlements, Castle Rieneck is a unique centre for educational and leisure activities. Youth groups and associations can enjoy a modern but atmospheric location for national and even international meetings and conferences. The most impressive part of the castle is the 12th century tower with its historical and unique walled chapel. The tower affords a magnificient view over the wooded banks of the Spessart and Rhön districts. Today, the medieval castle is the national centre for the German VCP Christian Scout and Guide movement. Here national and international encounters between Guides and Scouts take place. The Castle plays host to the meetings of the governing bodies of the VCP, the federal assembly and the federal council. The association’s specialist steering groups (Fachgruppen) also meet here regularly. But other national events like the VCP Song Festival, the Woodbadge Course, and the annual IMWe are regular highlights of life at the castle. We do have 138 Beds. 2-8 Beds per room. The Castle‘s campsite may be small, but it‘s very special. You may have to pitch the tents a bit closer together than you would normally do for once: but where else can you camp directly below a keep?

Informations about the centerTHE VILLAGE OF DRAVEThe village of Drave is around 500 years old. Scouts are in the village for more than 20 years and only for 10 years in a managed way. It's the birth place of the Martins family. It's their struglle, their effort, their work that brought us Drave to the 21st century. And although no one lives there permanently, some members of the Martins family live nearby and come often to the village. That's why we say that: Drave is uninhabited, not abandoned. Rovers that want to camp there need to have this in mind, the village is not ours - only some buildings and fields. And here, more than in any other place, someone with a scarf on his or her neck is representing all scouts. It's a big responsibility. It's a very beautiful place that's untouched by progress, only nature, silence, rocks, stars...You really feel something there, some say it's magic...A place where we can experience being a new man; a place of becoming, not of being. Drave is waiting for you and we are happy to welcome you in the centre and help you in everyway we can.As the name says, this Scout Centre is only for Rovers (and their Leaders). This was a choice made in 2001, after our National Rover Camp that was held in Drave. Even before all the major events that were held there were only for Rovers. In our Association (CNE - Corpo Nacional de Escutas, Portuguese Catholic Scouts) Rovers are from 18 to 22 years. Our motivation is the village and the Rover Programme itself – the fact that Drave is considered an architectural jewel, the harshness to get there and live there, the fact that our lives where “touched” by Rovering – not only has Rovers but also has Rover Leaders, and the strong feeling that is in places like this that Rovers can meditate and find some peace of mind (even through “hard labour”) that will make them see what they want in life and make up their minds about it.

THE HUMAN TREADMILLMATERIAL: One plastic cupOBJECTIVE: Carry some water to put the watermill workingPLAYING AGES: From 6 to 99TIME: As long as you like

A mill is a facility dedicated to the fragmentation of raw materials, specifically grain, wheat or other cereals, by using grinding stones. There are two major groups of traditional mills, which are classified by the source of energy used to move the mill:

Windmills - are a machine that converts the energy of wind into rotational energy by means of vanes. Originally, windmills were developed for milling grain for food production.

Watermills - are a structure that uses a water wheel to drive a mechanical process such as flour, lumber or textile production, or metal shaping (rolling, grinding or wire drawing). Typically, water is diverted from a river or impoundment or mill pond to a water wheel, along a channel or pipe. The force of the water's movement drives the blades of a wheel, which in turn rotates an axle that drives the mill's other machinery.

Here in Drave, we only have watermills to help us milling grain for food production. As you see, the river not always has flow to move the millstone. Therefore, it is up to you to help in this task.

RULES: The team members must form a queue with all the people lying on the ground, side by side,

glued together with hands raised up, forming a nice treadmill. One of the team members, should go to the river and fill the plastic cup with water. The person with the plastic cup filled with water, approaches the human treadmill, and lie

back on the hands of the other team members that make up the human treadmill. The team members that are forming the human treadmill must pass the person that carries

the plastic cup filled with water without dropping him to the ground or without letting him touching the ground.

As the team members that are forming the treadmill are no longer holding the person that carries the plastic cup, they must run to the end of the line, lay down again, side by side the last one of the line and continue to help carry the water to the watermill.

The game ends as soon as the treadmill arrives at the watermill and the team member that carries the plastic cup, can drop the precious water into the end of the channel that leads to the millstone.

Kandersteg International Scout Centre (Switzerland)

Informations about the centerKandersteg International Scout Centre is a World Scout Centre of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). Following the success of the first ever Jamboree held in London during 1920, Lord Baden-Powell expressed his wish of a Permanent Mini-Jamboree where Scouts from all over the world could meet. We opened our doors in 1923 and have been bringing Scouts and Guides together ever since. Exactly 90 years later in 2013 over 12,000 Scouts and Guides visited us from more than 40 different countries. International Friendship remains our focus, especially in the busy summertime when our Campsite fills up with up to 1,400 Scouts. We are situated in the Bernese Oberland, one of the most spectacular regions of the European Alps. This makes KISC the perfect base for mountain activities such as hiking, rock climbing and mountaineering. We are centrally located in Switzerland and easily reachable from many destinations. Baden-Powell asked us to leave the world a little better than we found it, and caring for the environment is one of our central themes. We are a founding member of the SCENES (Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and the Environment) network.KISC is run by a volunteer staff team of Scouts and Guides from around the world and is made up of people working from three months to several years. All of the staff speak English – the working language of the Centre. Although many other languages are spoken by different staff members. Our Staff are known as the Pinkies, due to the bright pink t-shirts they wear.

Games

Bats – how can they use their ears to “see”? – active gameEven on the darkest night, bats will be out and about, hunting their prey. At Næsbycentret we have at least four different species and we often see the bats hunting at the large, open areas or sliding on the lake, catching prey from the water surface.Bats hunt when the birds have settled down for the night – but how can they “see” their prey? Bats emit a “scream” made up of waves of sound. When their “scream” hits an insect, for example, the waves are bounced back as an echo, allowing the bat to “hear” the location of the insect. For us, however, bats are silent because they scream at such a high frequency that our ears cannot hear it.Age: 8+Materials:

A rope (at least 10 meter) At couple of scarfs

Time: From fifteen minutes to an hour (or more)What’s the game? Take the rope out of the backpack. Tie the ends together and lay it on the ground so that it forms a circle. Choose a “bat” and a “moth”. Blindfold the “bat” and place both “bat” and “moth” in the circle. The rest of the participants must stand around the circle and make sure that the bat and moth stays in the circle. The bat must now catch the moth. Every time the bat shouts “bat”, the moth must shout “moth” back. When the moth hears the call of “bat”, this is equivalent to the bat’s scream hitting the moth. The scream is then bounced back off the moth and picked up by the bat. The return signal – i.e. the cry of “moth” – corresponds to the echo that the bat hears in return. This lets it know that there are moths nearby, so it gets ready to hunt. Tip: You can, of course, put more “moths” in the circle – this will simply make it easier for the bat to catch one. You can also put two “bats” in the circle at the same time and try to get them to hunt together as a team. But make sure to choose a short and a tall “bat” so that they don’t bump their heads!

The bull in the red sea

A big piece of rope as long as needed. (It has to be long enough so every player can hold it) Form a ring without cutting the rope. The players face the middle of the ring and hold the rope in hip height. A ”bull” is enclosed in the ring, and the bull is now supposed to catch the other players by touch the hands or bodies. The players outside the ring are allowed to let go of the rope and run away, but they should work together because the rope is not allowed to touch the ground. If this happens the bull is allowed to break free and run after the last person to let go of the rope. If the person gets caught, it is now his/hers turn to play the bull. It’s really important that rope is held in hip height so the bull doesn’t gets the rope around his/hers neck.

Materials: One big piece of rope – Length according to number of player

Neihaischen Guide and Scout Centre (Luxembourg)

Information about the centerThe national training and scouting centers, either the "Relais de l'Amitié"-Chalet - the former Luxembourg Girl Guides training center - or the Chalet Nicolas Rollinger, traditional national scouting training center, have been reorganized under the non-profit organisation of the Luxembourg Girl Guides and Boy Scouts Association and continue to offer accommodation facilities through the mainly volunteering work of both managment boards. New partnership projects coorganized by the Nature Administration, the local support of the city of Schuttrange together with the Luxembourg Guiding and Scouting Federation back-up developing works in waste recycling service or new programm offer: e.g. the "Native Village" project has become a unique education project based on the learning of traditional live style values through different housing forms, either indian tipies, afican huts or an originally reconstructed celtic house.Since last world scout conference in January 2011 in Brazil, the Chalet Nicolas Rollinger has become an official candidat as SCENES Center enabling later on to cooperate in the worldwide SCENES-Network (Scout Centres for Excellence in Nature and Environment). Since juin 11th, the training and recreational center became officially the 13th world SCENES-Center. Special for Neihaischen is the “Native City Project”. The project "Native Village" is run in a joint-venture by the Luxembourg Girl Guides and Boy Scouts Association in cooperation with the Administration of Nature and Forests. Guides and Scouts, schoolars and youth groups should appreciate a more sustainable natural life style by the "Learning by Doing" concept. Confrontation with traditional living modes should support a more conscious experience of our environment. Throughout indian tipies, african cabans or a reconstructed celtic house, kids and youngsters learn how native Indians, Africans or Celts lived. Typical workshops as for example ceramics, bakery or celtic games ... are programmed by the "Native Village" project.

GamesEasy Spider Active Game All the stuff you need is to have is a place where you can put on your cord which looks like a spider net with holes big enough to pass people trough it. It's a game for every age because it's a good teambuilding game. Each person see how you have to work together with everybody to get a good finish. With building up and explanation you need between 20 to 60 minutes. After the game you can talk about it how it was and try to find resolutions how it could work better.

Material: - two trees, poles, fences, walls... almost any anchor point will do- cord

Time (w/o debriefing): 20 - 60 min/ as long as you want. You can try to transport everybody trough every hole

Additional InformationDelegates (min/opt/max): 8 / 15 / 24Space Requirements: 5x8mProduct Description The Project. Easy Spider is a technically advanced and improved version of the outdoor classic, spider web. Our new, innovative wire threading prevents the web from tangling during transport. That’s why, with just a little practice, you’ll be able to set it up in less than five minutes. The size of the individual holes is adjustable. The web is so flexible it adjusts to heights from 180 to 250 centimetres, and to widths form 250 to 480 centimetres.

How It’s Done. Before your group arrives, set up Easy Spider by mounting it between two trees, poles, fences, walls... almost any anchor point will do! The group’s task is for all team members to get through the spider web from one side to the other. Each hole can be used only once. Touching the net in any way (body, clothing, hair, etc.) is prohibited and sanctioned in a way you and the group decide in advance. How will they manage to organise their resources in order to solve this problem?

Games

Avalanche Activity – Active Activity

Materials:10 – 20 Balls (these can be of any size, any material – although softer balls work best or you can use scrunched up paper)You can play this game inside or outside

Time:As long as needed for one team to win

Task:

Split into 2 teams Nominate one member of each team to be the Mountain Rescue person – do not tell the other

team who it is Draw a line in the middle of the area you are using to play on – you can use something to mark the

line or just keep it in mind Put the balls along the middle line or scatter them evenly. Someone shouts go The aim is to grab the balls and throw them at the other team, when you have been hit you have to

freeze. The only person who can unfreeze people is the Mountain Rescue they do this by touching you. If the Mountain Rescue gets hit then he/she cannot unfreeze anyone else The winning team is the team that freeze the other team first.

Think about the rules before playing:

- Who gives the balls back, when it goes out of the area? Maybe leader or same?- When is somebody touched? Only by directly hitted by the ball or when the ball touches the ball at

first and after the person?- When 1 person throw the ball, the other, the first person get freezed then?

Age: To 15?

Time: About 30 minutes

Task:During the winter time it snow’s a lot at Our Chalet. Your task is to make a snowflake which you can use as a decoration any time of the year.

Cut out six squares of equal size

Taking each of the squares, fold them into triangles twice

Holding your triangle on the folded edge, start cutting from the bottom of the triangle towards the folded edge along the longest side. Make sure you do not cut all the way. The strips should be about the same width.

Unfold the triangle, so it is a square again. Glue together the strips at the points. One should go in-front of the square and the next behind the square and so on.

Pax Lodge (UK)

Informations about the center

Pax Lodge is one of four World Centres of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). The centre is situated in Hampstead, North London, next door to the World Bureau, the International Headquarters of WAGGGS.

The WAGGGS mission is to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world.

Pax Lodge offers scheduled programs and events throughout the year. The content of these programmes vary, but they all include learning about other cultures and international Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting and exploring London. We also look to discover more about many of the WAGGGS objectives such as leadership and advocacy.

Ten minutes walk up the hill from Pax Lodge is Hampstead Village, with its small, windy streets full of Georgian houses, fashionable shops, pubs, and restaurants. From the top of the hill it is possible to look down over the whole of London.

Beyond is Hampstead Heath, perhaps the most beautiful of London’s parks – less like a park and more like open countryside. The Heath is popular with Londoners and has many pleasant spots including the Ponds where visitors can swim, and Kenwood House, an eighteenth century building with wooded gardens and a well-known collection of British art. In the summer the Kenwood grounds host open-air concerts. Hampstead’s diversity and village charm means that there is something for everyone.

Pax Lodge (UK)Peacemaker Celebrities – Semi-active gameSkills: Communication, Cooperation, Creativity, Inquiring, Listening, Noticing, Paying attention, Problem solvingWho: 4+ players, all agesTime: Take as long as you likeMaterials: Cards (one per player), tape, markers, Enough space for players to minglePreparation:

Prepare index cards by writing the names of different significant peacemakers players will be able to identify. For example: Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, The Dali Lama, Mother Teresa Gandhi, Malala, etc.

Place tape on the back of the index cards. Prepare the reflection questions you will ask players in the debrief.

Directions: The objective of the game is to identify your celebrity peacemaker by asking other players

questions. Everyone will become a famous peacemaker, but they will not know which one. Players they will ask each other “yes or no” questions about who they are, like: Am I a woman? Am

I alive? Am I fictional? When a player correctly guesses which peacemaker celebrity he/she is, he/she attaches their

nametag to their chest and continues to mingle, answering the questions of other players. The game ends when everyone has correctly identified which peacemaker they are. Now they can reflect on how they experienced the game.

Debrief: Debrief the game with players. Remember, cooperative games are only as effective as your debrief. This is your opportunity to help players connect the game to personal experiences, actions, and beliefs. You will want to reinforce any skills or beliefs you are hoping players will carry beyond the game.

We’ve included some suggested questions below to get you started.Ask:

What happened during the game? What traits do the celebrity peacemakers have in common? Do any of us have similar traits? Why is it important to know about these significant peacemakers? How can they help us build a more peaceful community?

Games

The Octopus of lake Grabensee (Active Game):

You need: a playground

How to play:

Select someone who will start as “the Catcher”. The Catcher stands on one side of the playground, the other players on the opposite side of the playground. Now each player has to try to get to the opposite side of the playground. The Catcher tries to catch them by grabbing and rising people up in the air. If the Catcher succeeds, then the other player becomes also a Catcher and should help the Catchers. The game ends when all players are Catchers.

Swapping Game (Non-Active Game):

You need: a simple and cheap item (e.g. paperclip, pencil, toilet paper) for each team

How to play:

Separate all players into small teams. At the start every team gets the same simple and cheap item. Each team will take their item to other scouts and guides from around the scout centre to try to swap their item as often as possible. After a certain time the teams should all come together again and compare their items. The team with the “best” item wins. Before the start of the game, you have to decide on the goal of the game. Goals can be anything like the biggest or the most valuable item, the funniest or the most creative item, the number of swaps etc.

Vässarö (Sweden)

Informations about the center

Vässarö Scout Center is the largest permanent youth camp in Sweden. It is owned and run by the Stockholm District of the Swedish Guide and Scout Association and we have approximately 30 000 overnight guests a year.

Vässarö is not only visited by scout groups but also by other youth organizations, such as sports clubs, groups of handicapped children, school classes etc. We organize two Christian confirmation camps each summer, a sailing and wilderness camp for scouts and non-scouts aged 10-13, handicraft camps and sailing courses.

Many scout and guide groups, both Swedish and foreign, choose Vässarö Scout Center for their summer camps. We hope to have the pleasure to see you among our guests. All work on the island is carried out by volunteer, staff, from 18 years and older. A staff consisting of about 60 people is in charge of the camp. Most of the staff is between the ages of 18 to 25, but there are also quite a few who are older. We have, for example, several families among our staff.

Our island offers you countless possibilities for a fun and exciting programme. Forest, meadows, seashore rocks and the sea itself may be used in many ways.

Fladan, our small boat harbour, offers various possibilities to get out on the water. We have a wide variety of sailing boats: from small Optimists (one-person dinghies) and traditional sailing boats of fibreglass, to one beautiful wooden sailing boat, seating six or more people. Vässarö was donated to the Scout Group of Stockholm in 1942 when the owner, Captain Ragnar Westin, disappeared amidst the waves when his ship was torpedoed.

Vässarö has a whole set of nature instruction trails, but most of them are in the Swedish language. They are intended to teach the scouts names and facts of Swedish plants and animals.

Life line throwing - Active gameWhen it’s cold and the water is frozen, you don’t want to fall into a hole in the ice. But sometimes people do and they have to be rescued. This can be done, by throwing a lifeline.

Materials :A rope of approximately 8mm thick and 15 meters long with an object of approximately 500g attached. A target, the simplest target is two sticks in the ground a meter apart. More trickytargets are buckets, target-drawings etc. You may also have a target with a "middle" representing the head of the person to rescue giving zero points.

Time: Often the game is time limited, typically 10 to 15 minutes. It's not uncommon to have several teams or persons competing on similar targets.

Task: There is a zone where the throwing person(s) are located and from there a distance to the target, for example 8 meters. The lifeline is to be thrown at the target, for example, it has to pass between the sticks or land in the bucket.

Tip: Have several targets after each other and start throwing from the position of the last target, creating a lifeline golf course. Try to go the course with as few throws as possible. Swedish Match race – non active gameYou are enjoying a lovely day in the Stockholm archipelago and when you want to go home you run out of gas to your boat. In order to go home, you come up with the idea of making a soap engine for your boat.

Materials:A container with 3 cm of water in it representing a part of the archipelagoMatchesSoap (non liquid)

Time: About 20 minutes.

Task: Split the matches at the end. The match represents your boat. Put a little piece of soap in the splitted end. Put the matches in the water and see how far in the archipelago you can go.

Note: you may have to change the water between the races for optimum speed.

Explanation to the physics:The tension of the water surface behind the soap is lowered and therefore the match is being pushed forward of the higher tension in front of it.

Kapráluv mlýn (Czech Republic)

Games

Global breakfast (or dinner)For: group of older scouts/roversPlace: room.Time: 30-60 min.Topic: consumerism, global disparity and developmental problems.Method: reflected experience + discussion in groups.Task – motivation: The best way to demonstrate a global disparity to children is to put them

into the situation where they can experience this inequity and understand the feelings of the people who are touched by this phenomenon.

This simulation game consists of experience of uneven division of wealth in the world. It is good to play while a group is staying for longer during a breakfast or a dinner.

Supporting materials: state flags (flag holders may be made of plasticine), various food and drinks, cutlery, clothes for waitress (minimum 2).

Preparation: put the flags on the tables in groups of countries with approximately the same GDP; prepare a pretty wide scale of second meals which the children will be eating during their breakfast (dinner); minimum two leaders who will be playing a waitresses, in appropriate suits.

Play: participants take their places at tables as during usual breakfast (dinner). But flags on the tables divide them to the groups from different countries. It is better when the food consists of wider amount of elements (breakfast, cold dinner).

The meals are served to the tables one by one according to the wealth of each group of states. Here is an example for each table for breakfast per 30 persons and 5 tables:

Table 1: Australia, France, Japan, Canada, Germany, USA – the richest countries in the world. The waitress is doing best for them, he/she brings the best food and as much as they want and tries to make them satisfied. He/she brings one by one: tea, coffee (with milk), fruits, vegetables, salami, cheese, cookies etc. Everyone there has his/her own plate and a full complete of cutlery.

Table 2: Czech Republic, Chile, Croatia, South Korea, Mexico, Portugal. Waitress is also doing his/her best to satisfy them, but some of the best food (cookies or something) is not enough for everyone. Those participants will get a tea, coffee, salami, cheese, a little bit of vegetables, pastry, everything has to be right enough for everyone. Everyone has his own plate, knife and fork.

Table 3: Brazil, Bulgaria, Iran, Russia, Serbia, Turkey. Those participants don't get cookies, they get only tea, pastry, bread (everything is counted for the amount of people, one piece per one person), cheese, vegetables. They don't have enough plates and knives.

Table 4: Bolivia, China, India, Moldova, Pakistan. They get only tea – maybe only 2 cups, water, less bread and some pâté on a small plate. The knives and cups are missing (one knife may be added later), everything is on one plate.

Table 5: Ethiopia, Congo, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Uganda – the poorest countries in the world. Those participants get only a bread per a half of the people around this table and a little bit of water in PET bottle. They have no cutlery.

Waitresses start to service. Their attitude depends on a state: for tables 1 and 2 they are the most pleasant and helpful, for the others – less. Waitress have to comment their actions so everyone could understand what is happening.

Page 45: goosenetwork.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA mill is a facility dedicated to the fragmentation of raw materials, ... (rolling, grinding or wire drawing). ... each of them

Kapráluv mlýn (Czech Republic)

Example of the game situation: Table 4 asks about the coffee, but the waiter answers (loudly, so everyone could hear): “Coffee? There is no coffee and it won't be, because we have the lack of it in the world”. And in the same time the second waitress asks the table 1 if maybe they would like a fresh tasty coffee right from Brazil. Table 2 proposes to the waitress to send the humanitarian aid. Waitress tells (aloud): “Ladies and gentleman, attention, please! The Czech Republic is sending a humanitarian aid to Uganda. Applause, please!” But all that table gets is just a small piece of bread because the waiter takes the rest and moves it away.

During the play participants are interacting in free way and waitress are moderating their actions and bringing the food, drinks and cutlery. The most often interactions are:

- sending of the humanitarian aid – accompanied with the loud applauses, one the waitress passes the food or drinks, if too much sharing occurs waiters move the food away from the tables of the poorest countries;

- remote adoption – help for only one person;- immigration – moving one person from his table to another one.The play has to finish before the richest countries will be full to avoid them giving food they

don't want more. Questions for conversation:How did the participants feel during playing their roles? How long did it take for them to understand that not everyone has the same meal? How did they try to resolve the problem? How much does this game reflect real disparity in the world? The end of the game: In the end of the game discussion is the most important. It has to be

said that no one can decide where he/she is born. Let the participants think about the ways to solve those problems on a global scale and how much each of us could do. Tell them some facts about the real state of this phenomenon.

Tips for moderators: it's important for waiters to behave like a real one, wearing special suits and changing attitude to the clients accordingly to their position. They have to show how much they care about the richest tables. Be prepared for complaints from children as they are always expecting justice i.e. there will finally be some food for the unlucky ones but this is experiential game and thus the feeling of hunger of some and guilt of others is part of it. After an hour or two we can prepare large snack so none feels hungry and stressed.

Bats For: anyone.Place: free space outside.Knowledge:,.Time: 15 min.Theme: bats life, hibernation, hibernacula, humans impact to the nature.Method: physical activity.Task – motivation: How to survive in winter is the most important question for the majority

of our animals. Bats strategy is wide known: in autumn they gather fat eating all possible resources of food and find a place for hibernation. But not every place is of the same quality

for spending a winter there, so it's possible for bats to get frozen while staying at some hibernacula during hard winter. The aim of the game is to explain that bats are fighting for their life all the time. Their survivor depends not only on their strength, but also on good luck (weather, finding food). This game also shows how dangerous it is for bats when someone disturbs them during the hibernation period.

Task: imagine you are a bat and you need to prepare for winter survival: find food and a place for spending winter (hibernaculum).

Supporting materials: paper cards with names of bats’ food, signs of places to spend the winter, a hat for drawing papers with winter temperature written on them, paper cards with different lowest temperatures (approximately from -1 to -20 C).

Preparation: throw on the ground cards with names of bats food (moths, flies..); place the signs of places to spend the winter somewhere in the area.

Game: At the beginning players are gathering the food. When they have enough, they choose the place for hibernating (choose one from the sights and stay there). There has to be 10% less food than there is enough for all players (e.g. if there is 25 players and 8 different cards per 1 player, than we have to throw around 180 cards).

Each place for spending winter has it's own capacity = how many bats it can accommodate and temperature resistance. It is written on the signs – how many bats can stay in each place and what is a survival temperature for them there.

When most of the players gathered the food and got the place for hibernating, moderator tells loudly that the winter is coming. All the players left without food go out of the game (to the so called Bats Heaven). Than moderator draws from the hat minimal temperature of the respective winter. Players from the places with higher temperature quality that was drawn from the hat also go out of the game. Than the game starts from the beginning with those players-bats, who survived.

Questions for conversation:How do bats survive in winter? What do struggle for survival and natural selection mean?Do the strongest individuals have a possibility to increase their chances to survive? What other factors, except weather, can bother hibernating bats? The end of the game: This game is played for a few rounds. On each round the amount of

food is decreased proportionally to the amount of participants. The game shouldn't last till there

will be only one winner, because “dead” participants lose their attention. The winner is not important, it's more important to show the obstacles for the hibernating animals. That's why we pay attention more to the after-game conversation.

Possible variations: Cards with the names of the food may have different energetic quality. To get to the place for hibernating participant has to gather some concrete amount of points. Cards may be also with different types of food and participant has to choose only cards with a food suitable for bats.

You can also change the placement of the places for hibernating before each round so it is more difficult for bats. And you can draw from the hat name of one place where during the winter tourists came – bats in that place die because they were disturbed from hibernation. This play may be suitable for other kinds of animals, not only for bats.

Tips for moderators: Moderator has to make the drawing process exciting. At the first round it's better to make the temperature higher so most of the participants could play longer. In the next rounds temperature should get lower. The big group starts to compete for the limited resources. Someone doesn't have enough food or can't get to the place for hibernating before winter starts. The quick ones can pick up better place for staying and they have a bigger chance to survive. Step by step the group of the survivors is selected.

Nocrich Scout Centre – H.C.Haberman (Romania)

Informations about the center

C. Habermann is the only scout centre in Romania and it was opened in 2010 in the old parochial house of the Evangelical church, a house built in 1796 which hadn’t been used for 20 years. Getting the centre to where it is now was a long and tedious process that gathered the effort of many scouts who came from Romania and all around the world and volunteered. We are being literal when we say that Nocrich Scout Centre is a place that belongs to everyone. Together they created the Nocrich Family and a place where scouts can develop activities and experience scouting in a unique place, a traditional saxon village full of history. The scout centre is located in the middle of the village, near the Evangelical Church and it consists of 2 bedrooms (16 beds), one activity room, one dining room with library, kitchen and bathroom. The yard is 10.000 m2 and we have plenty of space for camping and as well a building with toilets and showers, a barn which is used for activities and a pottery workshop. T he pottery workshop at Nocrich is the only such workshop in the area, and gives interested people the opportunity to experience an old handicraft of the region and an enjoyable creative workshop. T he centre is a meeting place for Romanian but also foreign scouts and each year we welcome about 600 guests and volunteers from different countries such as Argentina, Austria, Sweden, France, Spain, Germany, Iceland, Macedonia, New Zealand, USA, Denmark and many others. We provide our guests with a proper place for having scout activities, for enjoying a unique experience in the Transylvanian countryside and for making new, longlasting connections and friends. Moreover, we keep in contact with a number of craftsmen in the area and we can arrange workshops on smithery, working with leather and wicker weaving (braiding twigs into hats, baskets etc.). Trekkings around the villages in Hartibaciu Valley are also an opportunity to get the feel of what the local area has tooffer.

Nocrich Scout Centre – H.C.Haberman (Romania)

Games

1st Game “Gasca” – The GangOutdoor, activeMaterials: a bottle/ a scout neckie or something easy to grabPlayers: min 6 + 1 (or 2) refereePlayground: the playground can be everywhere, and it has to be divided into two equal parts,in the middle stays the bottle or other object, let’s call this THE ITEM. The bigger the teams,the bigger the playground has to be.Rules:Split the group into two equal teams, every team has to set a number from 1 to “n” (nmeans the number of the members which forms the team, for example if the team has 7players then each player will receive a number from 1 to 7) for each member.The referee is the person who shouts one number (from 1 to “n”) and players from eachteam with those numbers have to go for the item (for example if the referee says 7, then the player no 7 from team A and the player no 7 from team B have to go for the item). The referee can say more numbers, or say GANG which means that all persons from both teams are allowed to go for the item, but is recommended that at least in the first minutes to be only oneor two numbers.There are few rules for this game:o the most important one is that the player has to take the item and bring it back in his base to get the point;o if the player that has the item is touched by an opponent from the other team then theother team gets the point;o if the player accidentally touches the item , the other team gets the point;o if the player grabs the item and drops it, the other team gets the point;o if the player wants to pass the item to another player he has to give it from hand to hand, not to throw it, if he throws it the other team gets the point;

Tips to play better : don’t grab the item and see what happens, wait like a hunter for anopponent to grab it and you can get the point if you touch him) the game looks simple, but youneed to have a strategy to win. You can play as much as you want, 10, 15 or 20 minutes andchange the teams or until one team reaches 10 points or how much you set at the beginning.

2nd Game PsychoIndoor/outdoorMaterials: nonePlayers: min 8Rules:Split the group into two teams, a small and a big one (according to the number of the groupthe small team can be just one person, the best number is two but not more than three). The small team leaves the room and the big team has to set a rule, when the rule is readythe small team comes back and tries to discover the rule by asking questions. The questions can be about anything and the answers of the other team have to respect always the rule that was set at the beginning. The big team can set a rule on which the questions are answered with YES/NO/IRRELEVANT or different or a different rule which the answers can be some words. The small team has to ask questions until they discover the rule or until they give up; when they think that they discovered the rule the have to say “The rule is this ……….” They can ask every kind of questions.Tips and examples of rules: the game is simple, but you can make it as complicated as you want, it depends on what rule you create. One example of a rule can be a physics phenomenon, freezing. Let’s suppose that the team has 9 members, each of them is one word from the following sentence: “During the winter, the water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and becomes a mirror” the prepositions won’t be considered. At every question asked the players answer will be the word which he had chosen at the beginning (example: CELSIUS or MIRROR ).Let’s presume that the big team has 8 members this time, the rule can be a word formed from 8 letters, for example “explorer” and each person can be a letter from this word, when a member is being asked, let’s say “Where are you from?” the answer will be the letter which he/she had chosen at the beginning (example: E or X ).
