We have been quite busy in the Gulf States District. Several of our Zones have

held their Fall Rallies in addition to Fall Fests and Bake Sales. The District Retreat was held at Camp Dixie in Josephine, Alabama, with approximately 100 in attendance. I applaud all those who were able to attend. It was truly a spirit filled weekend packed with a powerful Bible Study and loads of fun activities. A huge thank you goes out to Cherie Endrihs and Mary Ann Brutkiewicz along with their committee, who did an excellent job in planning the Retreat down to the finest details.

We are still aggressively working on the 2019 National Convention. A big thank you to all those who have stepped up and volunteered to be a Department Chairmen, a Director or a Volunteer for the convention. There is still an urgent need for volunteers. To date the number of volunteers is still very low. The Convention Manager, Marguerite Christman, has shared with us; we need to have a total of 500 volunteers for the Convention to run smoothly. So if you have not already done so, please sign up to be a volunteer. Visit our web site at www.lwmlgulfstates.org and complete the ‘Call to Workers’ form. Be sure to designate the area you are interested in working.

I have just returned from an Assembly of Leaders training session held in St. Louis. Our lst Vice

President Cherie Endrihs, our Young Women Representative Lydia Landes, and our Sr. Pastoral Counselor, Rev. Mark Kuehnert, also attended. We left excited, inspired, and anxious to come back to our District to share the information that was shared; all designed to help the Districts be more effective in so many areas. Our plan is to visit every Zone beginning in the Spring of 2019. We will be contacting the Zone Presidents to schedule a time for us to come and share and train.

We are entering a wonderful season of celebration, starting with Thanksgiving, followed by the Advent and Christmas Seasons. What a joyous season. I would like to wish you and your family many blessings as you worship and fellowship together. Enjoy the Holidays.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. Psalms 100:4 (KJV)

Pastor J. Mark Kuehnert -- Senior Counselor

Cherie did it again – an inspirational Bible Study at our Fall Retreat at Camp Dixie (October 5-7, 2018). “Sip, Savor, Drink Deeply” was the theme. As I write this article I’m enjoying a cup of coffee sipping, savoring, and drinking

deeply from the “unique” cup I created at the retreat. Thanks to all who worked to enable this retreat to happen and all the sisters in Christ who were a blessing to each other. Our worship with communion in the pavilion brought our retreat to as close as we sipped, savored, and drank deeply at the table of the Lord. How blessed we are.

Gwen, Lydia, Cherie, and I will be attending the LWML Assembly of Leaders in St Louis, MO, November 7-10. “Follow the Leader” is the theme. We will receive training to equip zone leaders at the local level in the months that follow. Pray for God’s blessings on this training and equipping leaders.

We are humbled as we hear God’s first family (Israel) again being subjected to a hate crime. What a tragedy. Satan continues to bring havoc to the world and to our communities. The harvest of prejudice is death. But thanks be to God there is life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Our nation’s leaders are called on to meet the challenge of an estimated 7000 people, mostly from Central American countries that are traveling through Mexico on their way to the U. S. Are they to be considered genuine refugees or illegal immigrants? As debate continues among our leaders and citizens their future is unsure. What is certain is they are children of our Heavenly Father. Pray for a God pleasing solution.

Join me and our family as we celebrate God’s blessings and grace during the coming Thanksgiving and Christmas festivals.

Love in Christ, Pastor J. Mark Kuehnert

Words of Encouragement -- November 2018Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever (Ps 106:1).

November is Thanksgiving month in the United States; but do we only give thanks once a year? Of course not. We should thank and praise our loving God for all He has done and continues to do for us. We should even thank Him for our unanswered prayers. There is really no such thing as unanswered prayers; they just weren’t answered the way we intended God to act. But God knows what’s best for us and, as a loving father, must deny us our wishes at times.

Pray, praise, and give thanks in all circumstances. God promises to never leave us nor forsake us. We can rely on Him. Can He rely on us? Do we remember those less fortunate than us? Do we share the Gospel at every opportunity? Do we thank and praise God?

The LWML 2019 Convention in Mobile, AL, will not only offer us many opportunities to praise God but also to pray for His guidance, His peace, and His love. Then let us share that love with others. Share God’s love with co-workers, guests, and the man or woman on the street. Be God’s light to a world living in spiritual darkness. Only then will our convention be a true success.

In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive' (Acts 20:35).

“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in Thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11

Fifth Biennial “Tee Up 4 Mites” Golf Outingat Mobile Convention

Join past LWML Presidents Gloria Edwards and Linda Reiser for this golf outing Wednesday, June 19, 2019, beginning at 8 a.m., at the Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile. This picturesque course features large greens, rolling fairways with a few water-hole obstacles, and sand traps. This course offers a unique golf experience and a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. In 1981, Golf magazine rated this course among the top 50 Municipal Golf Courses in the nation.

All net proceeds will be given to mites for the 2017–2019 Mission Goal. Check www.lwml.org/convention to access your entry form or contact Vickey at [email protected] for more information. Format will be a four-person scramble. Begin organizing your team. Placing singles to compose teams will also be possible. We are also seeking various Sponsors and Hole Sponsorships. Club rentals are available with prior reservations.

What a great opportunity to play a round of golf on this prestigious course, to have a fun day of recreation and fellowship, and more importantly to make our LWML mission visible in the community as we raise funds for our mission goal. Thanks for participating and joining us in this fifth biennial event.

Go, Team! Imagine with me (those of you who are not football fans will have to imagine more than others) you are at the first football game of the season of your favorite team. The tailgaters have come into the stadium, the cheerleaders are revving up the crowd, the band is playing, and the sun is shining through the crisp autumn air. Suddenly the team bursts through the tunnel and is ready to play. The announcer says “Lining up is Tua Tagovailoa, quarterback; Aaron Rodgers, quarterback; Tom Brady, quarterback; Nick Fitzgerald, quarterback.” By now the fans are restless, wondering, “How can we play a game with only quarterbacks on the field?” The announcer continues, “Jarrett Stidham, quarterback; Drew Brees,

quarterback.” You get the picture – no football team can win with only quarterbacks playing. They call the plays; they are the leaders of the team. But without running backs, linemen, kickers, defensive players, the quarterbacks would lose every game. In the church and in LWML, it is the same. God has given gifts to certain people to use to His glory – at whatever position they “play.” Look around. Who do you see as the “players” on God’s team in LWML? Who is the quarterback? She is the leader, the one who encourages the others, the one with administration gifts. Who make up the offensive line? They protect and defend the quarterback. They help by accepting some of the jobs to make the quarterback’s load easier. Who are the running backs? They pitch in and help any way they can to serve the Lord and the LWML. Of course, Scripture does not use the idea of a football team to convey the truth that God puts us together to do His work. But in Romans 12:4-8 it does compare the Church of Jesus Christ to a body that works well together. “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Now that we see God’s plan of providing team members to accomplish His purpose, we must also look at one other’s directive. We find this further down in Romans 12. Verse 18 says, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Even though we are different – we have different gifts, we have different responsibilities, we have different jobs – God expects us to get along and to be at peace with one another. We will not always agree on every matter, but we will disagree in love. We will live at peace with everyone. Back to our illustration of the football team – When all players perform the job they are called to do and support each other, they have a winning team. When our LWML women use the gifts God has given them and support them with love, we have a winning team for our Lord. Go, Team!Judy Lessmann

The Azalea Zone held its Fall Rally on September 15th. At this meeting, we approved new by-laws. Our Zone voted to sponsor the opening worship folder for the Convention. We are also hosting the site visit on February 8-9, and a committee was formed to facilitate this event. Gifts from the Heart benefitted ‘McKemie Place’, a homeless shelter for ladies. Our second offering benefitted ‘Housing First’, which strives to provide housing for veterans. Azalea Zone is actively promoting the convention through Facebook. Check it out at Azalea Zone-LWML. Our second “photo shoot” for this Facebook Page will take place on the Causeway and the Eastern Shore on November 4th. We had a great turn out from all societies at the Gulf States District Retreat at Camp Dixie in October. Thank you to all who jumped in to make the retreat such a success!

Around the Bay Amazing Grace! God’s Amazing Grace are the only words which can exemplify Rev. Dr. Ulmer Marshall’s ministry. Trinity Lutheran Church LWML acknowledged and honored Rev. Marshall at the church’s 67th Anniversary Celebration held on July 29. The 10:00 a.m. worship service honored him for his faithful service to the congregation. It was 45 years ago on July 29, 1973, when Rev. Marshall was installed as Pastor of the congregation. The LWML presented Rev. and Mrs. Gwen Marshall, his lovely wife, a gift certificate to Felix’s Seafood Restaurant, one of his favorite dining establishments. Afterwards, the congregation celebrated with a delicious dinner and cake for dessert. The LWML thanked God for their faithful service. In August we supported the Trinity Evangelism Ministry with donations to the Mobile Metro Jail Ministry. In September we will host a Senior Citizen Dinner and Program. Submitted by Jerlean Hudson

St. Mark’s - ElbertaThe ladies at St. Marks were busy selling baked goods and jellies at the Sausage Festival in March. We provided seven scholarships to Camp Dixie this summer. In August two new projects were adopted: Adopt-a-Seminary Student and Mission of the Good Shephard in Belize. We provided the lunch on Saturday at the Gulf States District Retreat at Camp Dixie, “Sip, Savor and Drink Deeply”. Currently we are getting ready for the October Elberta Sausage Festival. Submitted by Bonnie UtterbachSt. Paul’s - Foley The ladies of St. Paul’s are very busy preparing for their Fall Craft Bazaar on November 3rd. We split the proceeds from the sale with the church. Our ladies portion will continue to support mission work for the year. Currently we are supporting: Lutheran Braille Workers, Lutheran Bible Translators, a LCMS seminary student, Women’s Medical Care Center, the St. Paul’s Quilters, who make lap quilts and patriotic quilts for our veterans (24 quilts and counting), and Camp Dixie Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. We stay busy with potlucks, Baptisms, the “Snow-Bird” luncheon, and a host of other activities throughout the year. Submitted by Lucille Thau

Concordia – MontroseOur Theme of “Sharing and Caring” continues. We had awesome mite collections in June and September. We served a meal at the Ronald McDonald House in August, hosted a school supply give away in September, and are getting ready for our ‘Annual Harvest’ in October. We will be making donations to our chosen charities during the last 3 months of the year. We are convinced that only what you do for Christ will last. Submitted by Gladys Dale

Holy Cross – MobileOur ladies enjoyed summer fellowship through a series of Ladies Nights Out this summer. These concluded with a supper at Wentzel’s Oyster House on August 28. Twenty-three ladies enjoyed an evening of food, fun, and fellowship. On October 14, we celebrated LWML Sunday with a focus on Mites. Following each service, we served donuts and had a display board highlighting the work of the LWML at the national level, district level, and at Holy Cross. We also voted to send $600.00 to the Southern District to assist with Hurricane Michael Relief efforts. A yard sale will be held on October 20, to help defray convention costs and to help support the ‘Mission Walk’ at the 2019 Convention in Mobile. In November we will

have a Craft and Bake Sale. This sale is our primary fund raiser and funds will be used to support local, national and international mission projects, and specials needs the congregation might have. In December we will visit our shut-ins and have our annual Christmas Party. Holy Cross LWML will be the host congregation for the National Convention Site Visit in February. We are working closely with our sister societies in the Azalea Zone to ensure a great visit for committee leaders. Submitted by Suzy Cleveland

Central Alabama Zone The fellowship hall at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Enterprise, was buzzing with activity as the ladies of the Mary Martha Society hosted the Central Alabama LWML Zone Fall Rally on Oct. 20, 2018. The theme of the rally was “Trust in the One who made the Stars”. The Bible Study, based on Jeremiah 33:2-3 was led by Rev. Mark Kocis from Trinity Lutheran Church in Dothan, and Rev. Wiggins from Unity Lutheran Church in Montgomery, AL, led the communion service for the forty-seven ladies in attendance. After lunch the ladies made a special ornament for themselves and Gwen Dixon, Zone President, led the business portion of the meeting presenting vital information regarding the National Convention to be held in Mobile in June 2019. The “Gifts from the Heart” donations will be the school supplies that are to be used for one of the servant events during the 2019 Convention. There were over 1,729 items collected ranging from backpacks to pencils and erasers. To God be the glory! Jeanie Kisner/Public Relations Chair Gulf States LWML

Emerald Coast ZoneThe Emerald Coast Zone had their fall rally on October 20, at Trinity, in Cantonment, FL. Basically, four ladies hosted the 45 ladies and 4 pastors that attended. The theme was "Ready, Set, Grow". Pastor Wargo did a wonderful job in his Bible Study on how we need to get “Ready, Set, and Grow” in our Christian life. After lunch, the theme was once again summarized in a skit presented by the Executive Board. The by-laws were presented and unanimously approved by the ladies. It was announced that we will be hosting the Gulf States District Convention on April 17-19, 2020, at the Navarre Convention Center, Navarre, FL. The encouraging thing is – there were 12 of our societies represented at the rally. Bebe Cofer and ladies from Trinity Lutheran, Panama City, hosted a beautiful gathering of Christian Fellowship in September, with many from Good Shepherd and Redemption Lutheran in attendance. Five of our ladies

attend the Fall Retreat at Camp Dixie. They just returned home when Hurricane Michael did tremendous damage in Panama City. This immediately shifted focus in a different direction. In August, LWML ladies at Redeemer Lutheran in Pensacola, welcomed back the teachers and staff of Redeemer Lutheran School for a new school year with a luncheon. This annual event is to show appreciation for all the teachers' hard work and dedication. Many of our ladies helped with cleaning and painting at the church /school on ‘Work Day’ prior to the start of school. The ladies at Good Shepherd, Shalimar, had a fun time at their first meeting of the year in September. They were able to disburse their hard earned yard sale funds of $2,780.20. After hearing Pastor Hellmers at the District Convention, they gave him $1000 toward the building of a corn mill in Naminage. Three other missions, Lutheran Bible Translators, Ysleta Lutheran Mission in El Paso, Texas, and Okaloosa Jail and Prison Ministry, each received $360. The final project will sponsor a Wendysue/Susanna Lynn Retreat, February 15-17, for $500. Good Shepherd, Gulf Breeze, hosted an evening of fun with a Bunco night in August. At the request of many attending, we are hosting another Bunco night on November 17. We were blessed to add three new ladies as members at our September meeting. They were able to participate in the LWML Sunday Worship Service. We just finished making 120 dozen Lumpia for our October fund raiser and were already able to donate $500 of the proceeds to Hurricane Michael victims. The rest will be disbursed at the November meeting for mites and other charitable organizations. We had quite a few ladies from different societies enjoy the wonderful retreat at Camp Dixie.Submitted byCarolyn Kassulke/Emerald Coast Zone LWML President

Mountain Lakes ZoneThe LWML ladies at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Cullman AL, were joyfully busy collecting school supplies for local students and made a generous donation to our church school to purchase a new ice maker for the kitchen. Our ‘Sew and Sew’ group continues to gather and make quilts and lap robes. Our silent auction was so successful we were able to donate to “Cullman Caring for Kids” and Cullman’s “Pilot House”. We had the pleasure of hosting our Fall Zone Rally and look forward to a spaghetti lunch and bake sale in November.Submitted by Rachel Moody

The Mountain Lakes Zone held our Fall Rally on September 22, at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Cullman, AL with 50 ladies attending. The theme was “Let God’s Word dwell in you…(Pin) it to your hearts” from Col 3:16 and Deut 11:18. The ladies of St. Paul’s shared a skit entitled “Pin God’s Word to Your Heart” using patchwork quilt pieces. A Silent Auction was held with $511.50 raised for the Gulf States District to help with the 2019 Mobile National Convention. The following ladies were elected to serve our Zone for the 2018-20 term: Rita Lange, President; Arlene Merry, VP; Marty Cowart, Sec/Tres; Rhonda Guthmiller and Lynn Harmon, Nominating Committee.

Women of VisionThe ladies of the Women of Vision Zone are very happy to have been hostesses for the recent Birmingham District Convention. We were enriched and blessed in this service. Since that time most societies have been busy organizing for the next year. Two exceptions are the women of Christ Lutheran in Tuscaloosa and First Lutheran in Birmingham. The LWML society at Christ Lutheran, Tuscaloosa, was the hostess society for the Fall Zone Rally which was held on September 15. President Beverly Wilson welcomed everyone and the theme for the rally was ‘A Fountain of Blessings’. The Bible study was led by Frances Robinson of the same title. There were around 25 women in attendance and most societies in the zone were represented. The Gifts from the Heart that were collected were distributed to the Hospice of West Alabama. The Christian Growth workshop next spring will be held in Birmingham and hosted by First Lutheran.

First Lutheran, Birmingham, organized and held a Fall Fair on September 22, to raise money for local mission projects. Weekend Workshops were held to prepare hand-made items to sell at the Fair: prayer bracelets, knitted socks, pot holders, nativity scenes, tote bags, and scrumptious homemade baked goods. Tickets were raffled for a performance at a local community playhouse. The winner was announced at the LWML Luncheon on October 7th. The ladies participated in the Worship Service held observing LWML Sunday. The service was based on the theme “Our Rest in a Changing World.” Each member wore a small purple and yellow bow indicating their affiliation with LWML. Afterward a hot lunch was held in the Fellowship Hall for the congregation. Here the mission projects were presented and the congregation asked to help in support with monetary donations. This activity was again successful due to the generosity of everyone involved.Submitted by Donna Speegle, Zone President

GULF STATES LWML RETREATEighty-seven ladies from the Gulf States District LWML descended upon Camp Dixie in Josephine, AL,

October 5-7 for much needed retreat. Cherie Endrihs, District LWML First Vice President from Christ the King Lutheran Church, Enterprise AL, lead Deb Burma’s Bible study, “Sip, Savor and Drink Deeply.” The weekend was full of activities, apart from the study, as the women played games, did yoga, designed prayer journals and coffee cups. There was plenty of coffee, snacks and laughter. Lydia Landis from St Paul’s Lutheran Church Destin FL, displayed her musical talents as she led the singing and praising portion of the retreat. A campfire Saturday night, complete with smores, and the church service on the beach Sunday morning lead by Rev. Mark Kuehnert added to the retreat. “Gifts from the Heart” items were donated to benefit Camp Dixie Outdoor Ministries. The ladies made new friends, reconnected with old and had time to “renew and refill their cups” prior to departing for home Sunday afternoon.Respectfully submitted,Jeanie Kisner, Public Relations ChairGulf States District LWML
