Sadly Muriel told us she was leaving the district and that it would be her last meeting with us. She has quietly put in a lot of effort for our club and is much appreciated.

Jenny updated us on the progress of the garden ramble. She has achieved a lot in the short time she has been back. Please let her know if you are able to help in any way.

For those going to the movies tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll have fun. It’s a way more suitable movie than that other one. Lastly I hope to see you at the combined Kamo dinner meeting in a couple of weeks.

Regards,

Sally

Firstly thank you to the members that voted for my daughter in the Radio contest. “ Hewys Backyard project”. Tash won the contest. And they have just completed her patio deck. This included the cost of materials, shade sail and building to the amount of $9000. As she is in very plain ,old 1950’s house,( a doer- upper house ) and by herself. This was a dream come true for her. So sincere thanks.

And thanks to the members who are doing a great job with organizing the Garden Ramble. Great to see the new and positive ideas coming forward.

Everything is on track and looking good !

Lastly the bulletin . Due to a messy month with changed meetings, and my time constraints. This will be posted.

Please note the new committee list on the back page.

Whangarei Hatea Lions are part of a worldwide service to collect and recycle eyeglasses.

With the help of

Lowes and PartnersSpec saversBush Road Medical Centre

These businesses collect donated eyeglasses for us. These glasses are processed by the Papakura Lions. Cleaned tested and stored for use.

With the eye clinic in Samoa receiving new state of the equipment. And the new Fiji clinic equipped and functioning. The donated eyeglasses are helping our neighbors’ in the Pacific Islands.

Recycling is at little cost because of the volunteer system of collecting, preparation and dispensing.

Recycled glasses are especially needed after a natural disasters- e.g. Tsunami where eyeglasses where instantly lost and not replaceable. Extra glasses are sourced and delivered to these regions.

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation."

September 2011 turned out to be foreign currency month for the Heads Up project. Coin Company International have sorted and calculated the coins from the latest foreign coin shipment with the tonne of coins producing an impressive $25,200 for Heads Up for Kids. Also in

September another 450kgs of foreign coins were sold locally for $13, 000.

Old Money Facts from the Reserve Bank of New ZealandThe average household has 200 old and foreign coinsMen hoard far more coins than womenThe average Kiwi carries 9- 10 coins with them when they go out The Reserve Bank issued over 500 million 5 cent coins between 1967 and 2006. About 350 million were never returned!

Heads Up for Kids benefits New Zealand Youth - it also: Saves the taxpayer the cost of buying new coins, as the old coins are recycledRecycling copper and nickel. The metals that the older coins were made from can be sold for scrap metal and recycled. Boosts the economy, as it brings idle money back into circulation.

Each day on Safari the two hunters pulled on their heavy trekking boots for trekking through the jungle. But there came a day when one bloke pulled on a pair of running shoes.“ What for “ asked his mate.“There’s a man eating Lion in these parts”“But you won’t out run a Lion in those”“ Don’t have to, said the smarty. “Just have to be faster than you “

Donation boxes at New World supermarkets are an expansion on the collection outlets. Resene Paints and the red tins continue to be a main method of collection. The past few months has seen an expansion in Heads Up for Kids in both awareness and reach with new outlets for collections and much publicity. In March Foodstuffs Wellington approved a proposal for all 47 New World supermarkets in Central New Zealand to install Heads Up for Kids donation boxes. The project team arranged for custom made donation boxes to be designed and manufactured to suit the layout

The Radio Network sponsorship contract has finished. A number of people commented that they had heard the advert, and more than 50 calls to the 0800 number were generated as a result of the radio advert proving its success as a call to action. Based on this number, it would be reasonable to assume that many others acted directly by taking coins to Resene themselves.

The aim of this Heads Up sponsorship is to:Assist 60 students from these two low decile schools build confidencePromote the Youth aspects of the Heads Up ProjectDemonstrate to our sponsors just what can be achievedGain further publicity of the project to take it to the next level

Banks continue to donate buckets of old money. Remuera Lion, Richard Simmons has recently collected 80kgs from a local ASB. Take a red collection tin into your local bank and ask if you can leave it with them, or simply ask if they have any old and foreign currency they’d like to get rid of.Community centres have also proven to be successful points: Libraries, churches, schools, sports centres. A few Lions have taken a collection tin to their local golf club, and taken a few minutes to talk to the players about Heads Up for Kids. RSAs are another excellent source. Blockhouse Bay Lion, Ray Warren has collected huge amounts of coins from their club by leaving a collection tin at the bar. Masterton Lion, Joy Tutty has collected well over 100,000 coins in her area by maintaining media momentum. Whenever something interesting is found or a new total is announced Joy contacts her local radio station and newspaper.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR ERIC CARTER

District 202K “Outrageous Out West” Convention We are now only a couple of weeks away from our Convention and Annual General Meeting. As you are all aware it is to be held Out West at ―Trusts Stadium‖ on Friday 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October. Friday night will be our formal Opening and Flag ceremony and entertainment, Saturday has the Business session and a great trip planned for the

partners. Saturday night we let our hair down (for those that have hair) and have our ―Outrageous‖ evening function. Then, on Sunday we have our Remembrance and Rededication Service at which we have the opportunity to pay our respects to our members that have passed away since our last convention and acknowledge their service to LCI, their Districts and their communities.

I Believe that it is essential for every Club that has lost a member to be present to represent their Club and show their respects. Foundation of the Blind I am pleased to be able to report that our District has now donated near to $30,000.00 towards the purchase of B-Speak Digital Players for the Foundation of the Blind. As ―Knights of the Blind‖ this is a wonderful project for us to be part of. However, the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind urgently needs our assistance to raise more funds for the purchase of the next shipment of digital players. The Foundation has set a target of everyone across New Zealand using the new digital players by this coming Christmas. Let us be the leaders and give all those blind and partially sighted people in our District and your local communities the chance to have their own B-Speak Digital Player. District Tree Planting Project - To plant 2,500 Trees The Living Legends tree planting project is now completed for this year. We may have the opportunity to continue our involvement with Living legends and Project Crimson in the future. The weather conditions at both Uretiti and Long Bay was not great but the hardy members turned up and planted a number of trees. Motuihe Island was much more successful with 65 Lions, friends and family going across by ferry and being part of a team of 420 people that planted about seven thousand trees. To all of you and the organisers at each of the three sites, thank you and well done. I Believe you have made a difference.A MESSAGE FROM LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) COORDINATOR PDG Ron Thompson Since 1988 for our district (including the old A and G) which is now 202K has had clubs honour special members both from within clubs and also non Lion citizens with a ―Melvin Jones Award‖. This is the highest award a club can make to an individual and each costs US$1,000 This money goes directly to our International Lions Foundation commonly known as LCIF which was founded in honour of the organisations founder the late Melvin Jones. Money is administered by a Board of Lions Clubs International without deduction for both disaster relief and other deserving projects and programmes. Since 1988 when the foundation was established our district has contributed US$287,000 from the awards given to some 287 persons. In addition to the awards, clubs have been encouraged to make voluntary donations to LCIF by annually paying in NZ$10 for each member in the club. Because the Foundation uses the money for humanitarian purposes is

Page 16:   · Web viewWhangarei Hatea Lions. OCT . 2011. REMEMBER29th Oct -Guy Fawkes 6pm Toll Stadium3rd Nov -Dinner meeting RSA from 6pm5th Nov -Growers Markets. Ramble ticket sales12th-

acceptable for this $10 per member to come out of a club‘s charitable trust account. Our District Governor and indeed all District Governors throughout the world can make requests for funds in times of emergency at time such as floods, earthquakes, tsunami etc as well as for supporting grants for cancer lodges, eye clinics, special projects etc. Over the years our district, which of course includes Fiji and Samoa has received more from LCIF than the district has contributed. We are indeed fortunate to be able to call on it in times of need so it is well worth supporting.

Lions around TownKAMO LIONS Ran a Debate with the subject being: “Sex is more enjoyable than involvement in a Lions Project‖; well Onerahi Club team led by Kim Guyton came, spoke and took away the trophy. The members of the Onerahi team are either extremely virile or youthful or they possess a great imagination suggesting they had sex up to 10 times a day in any place at any time. They were quoted as saying sex is accompanied by lots of warm fuzzes and even simulated a climax. Whereas the Kamo team were much more down to earth quoting the warm fuzzes that can be got from a seven year old assigned to life not walking then being fitted with a Hart Walker frame suddenly being able to be upright and face to face with others. The satisfaction gained from being involved in doing something for someone else this team suggested far outweighed the selfish pleasure gained from a two minute sexual encounterMARSDEN LIONS Donated $2500 to Hospice . Returning home from work, a blonde was shocked to find her house ransacked and burglarized. Shetelephoned the police at once and reported the crime. The police dispatcher broadcast the call on thechannels, and a K-9 unit patrolling nearby was the first to respond. As the K-9 officer approached the house with his dog on a leash, the blonde ran out on the porch, shuddered at the sight of the cop and his dog, and then sat down on the steps.Putting her face in her hands, she moaned, "I come home to find all my possessions stolen. The Pecan Tree On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight and began dividing the nuts. "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me." He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend, he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. "Come here quick," said the boy. "You won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls." The man said, "Beat it kid. Can't you see it's hard for me to walk"? When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence, they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me." The old man whispered, "Boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord." Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, but were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord. At last, they heard, "One for you, one for me. That's all. Now, let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done." They say the old man made it back to town a full five minutes ahead of the kid on the bike!
