Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Sunday, April 5, we celebrate Easter Day. It is the highest festival worship service of the year, as it tells us once again the story of the Resurrection of our Lord. It reminds us of who we are and whose we are. And because we are given so great a gift, the promise of eternal life, we are also reminded of our mission to share the Good News, both within our congregation and to the ends of the world. I talked with our Stewardship Committee last fall about the possibility of sharing a narrative budget with the congregation. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday, April 5, we celebrate Easter Day.

I didn’t get this done in time for the Annual Meeting, but have been thinking that now would be a good time to do this. For a narrative budget would show how we are reaching out as a congregation in our Easter mission.

A narrative budget takes the facts and figures of a line item budget and streamlines the numbers in a way to perhaps better show how God’s work is being done. A narrative budget allows for a re-thinking of staff resources from salary and benefits to an investment of staff time for the mission and vision of the congregation. The expenditures for buildings and administration are shown as necessary costs for maintaining and growing the ministries of our church.

A resource from the Stewardship Working Group of the Southeastern Iowa Synod identified the following as categories for ministry areas: 1. Global and Local Mission, which would include benevolence and Tanzania. 2. Faith Formation. 3. Worship and Music. 4. Stewardship. I also added the categories of Evangelism and Social Ministry as I felt that these areas were very important to our mission. The Synod also gave a fifth area called Support Ministries – to provide a place for expenses that did not fit the other categories, like youth ministry.

I did a study of my time and found that approximately 4% of my time is spent in the area of Stewardship; 7% on Evangelism; 9% on Social Ministry issues; 12% on Worship and Music; 16% on Faith Formation; 23% on Global and Local Mission; and 29% on Support Ministries.

Mary also did a similar evaluation of how her time was spent on these ministry areas. From that, and looking at other support staff, it was very apparent how their time is ministry on our behalf. As I looked at our 2015 budget, numbers became ministry, with approximately 3% used for Stewardship; 5% on Social Ministry; 7% on Evangelism; 14% on Faith Formation; 22% for Global and Local Ministries; 24% for Support Ministries; and 25% on Worship and Music.

Of course, beyond budgeted figures, special fundraisers for things like Tanzania, Social Ministry, and Luther League are also monies used for ministry.

A line item budget is a good and necessary thing. A narrative budget helps to tell the stories of ministry that are taking place because of your generosity. It shows God’s work being done, and the Good News being shared. It gives emphasis to the Holy Spirit active and at work in our congregation.

Love In Christ,

Pastor Mark

$ 60,000 MATCHING GIFT OPPORTUNITY!!

As announced at our worship services on March 22, we have been blessed with a $60,000 gift for our improvements. This gift is based on the Congregation matching it with $60,000 of giving for our improvements. Because we need to confirm a summer construction schedule with our contractor, the deadline for matching this gift is May 1, 2015. Each of you will be receiving a letter explaining this along with a return envelope. Besides the letter you will receive in the mail, there is a more detailed explanation on our website. Go to www.swedesburglutheran.org. Click on: 150th Improvement Update. If you would like to receive a hard copy of this update, please contact the

Church office. Any improvement giving since March 19, 2015 will be credited as a match—unless you specify otherwise. Our intent has been to not use memorial funds for our projects (we have a current balance of over $32,000). However, if a family specifies that memorial money be used for current improvements and the family lets us know that by May 1, those memorial fund contributions will count as part of the match.

Congregation Council and Church Finance Notes

The Council met on Thursday, March 19, 2015. The next regular Council meeting will be Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. A copy of the meeting minutes is posted in the church narthex. Council minutes are also available in the church office. The next regular Council meeting will be Thursday, April 18th, at 7:00 p.m.

Lifetree Café

We have launched a ministry where people will identify us by our love as we fulfill our God-given mission. That ministry is called Lifetree Café, where people come together for an hour to learn and talk about a different, interesting topic each week. We get the chance to meet and listen to members of our community, to connect with people we might not meet anywhere else, and to reflect the light of Christ as we share stories from our lives. Each hour provides a way

Page 6: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com... · Web viewNewsletter- April 2015Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Sunday, April 5, we celebrate Easter Day. It is the highest

for the conversation to turn toward God, no matter what the topic is.

Each Lifetree episode features a true story of someone dealing with a real situation. That story is presented in an original film. It’s the stories that are shared on film that give people permission to share their own stories. Those who know God have an opportunity to share their stories with those who may not yet know God. Every week at Lifetree people are encouraged to take one step closer to Jesus in a place where they don’t experience judgment, a place where their doubts and questions are welcomed, a place where everyone is on the journey together, and a place where we can all truly experience God.

You’re invited you to participate in this adventure. To come to Lifetree Café episodes, to enjoy the hour, to learn and grow. Your listening ear could make a big difference in someone’s life. And your own simple stories of how you’ve seen God work in your life could be just the thing that points someone to Jesus. Or you may want to join the Friendship Team, the people that provide hospitality to our Lifetree Café friends.

Churchmen Meeting

The Churchmen will have a prayer breakfast for all men on April 11 at 6:30 a.m., at the parish hall, 201 Academy Avenue, with hosts R. L. Chrisinger and Monte Kann. All men are invited. Pastor Mark will lead the Bible Study.

Women of the ELCA (WELCA)

WELCA Mission Action is requesting assistance from anyone who can finish sewing quilts. (There will NOT be sewing in the Parish Hall on Wednesday, April 1.) WELCA invites you to join them on Wednesday, April 8 and 15 at the parish hall at 9 a.m. A potluck lunch is at noon. If you feel you can assist at home with any quilt work, the WELCA needs your help to finish them so they can be shipped out.

Once again we will need many volunteers to help wrap and sort the personal care kits and pack them in boxes. We are planning to work on April 15 and many hands make quick work. A volunteer is needed to drive the packages to Cedar Rapids on April 18. If you feel you can help in any way, please contact Betty Molander.

Thank you to everyone who has been assisting the collection of items for the Personal Care Kits. If you are unable to provide items, perhaps you might consider contributing financially toward the shipping of the kits. LWR’s approximate cost to handle and ship one Personal Care Kit overseas is $2.65. Feel free to contribute to this by marking your check or envelope to WELCA.

Social Ministry

Thanks to everyone who supported the Social Ministry Committee’s Spring Brunch! A delicious meal of French Toast, egg casseroles, and muffins and rolls was served. Over $400 was given in freewill contributions.

Social Ministry is hosting a food drive for the Fellowship Cup which began March 22 and continues through April. The Fellowship Cup still needs your support to keep the Food Pantry well stocked. Following is a list of most needed items: Their top 10 needs: Breakfast Cereal, Canned Fruit, Canned Veggies, Canned Meat, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Canned Soup, Toilet Tissue, Juice Boxes (For Summer Sacks) Any grain like rice or pasta. Thank you for the support! A box is located in the narthex (entryway) and the west entrance for these donations.

Music & WorshipThe Worship and Music Committee has made the decision to worship using the Now the Feast and Celebration liturgy on the second Sunday of each month. April 12 will be the next opportunity to learn this new setting of our worship service. We will still use the Chicago Folk Service occasionally, the next time being April 26.

The next Worship and Music meeting will be April 22.

Sunday School Happenings

ATTENTION: HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! A special 4-week study based on the hit movie, God's Not Dead!, is planned for April 12, 19, 26 and May 3. The sessions will be after worship and last approximately one hour, with students watching a portion of the movie, followed by discussion. Student workbooks will be provided. This study tackles these four topics:

Take a Stand - God has called his believers to something "set apart" and sometimes he calls on us to do something unexpected. Will you be ready? Say Something - It isn't fun being ignored. Are you ready to acknowledge God? Link Arms - Our closest friends are usually our strongest allies. What if they don't share

the same core belief? Lean on Me - Once someone is an unreliable friend, is there a way back to redemption?

For April & May in Sunday School we will be studying lessons from the New Testament, specifically the book of Acts and Paul’s letters. We’ll be talking about how the disciples gathered their courage after Jesus’s death and brought his message to the masses. As often as possible, our Sunday School lesson will coincide with at least one of the readings to be presented during that morning in worship. The schedule for April and May:

April 5 – No Sunday School- Easter BreakApril 12 – Jesus Appears to His DisciplesApril 19 – Paul teaches about Spiritual GiftsApril 26 – Peter tells the Sanhedrin about JesusMay 3 – Philip tells the Ethiopian about JesusMay 10 – Peter visits Cornelius

Here is a new study we will begin after Lent: Let It Go by Karen Ehman. How to Stop Running the Show and Start Waking in Faith. This study is about women who are wired to control and that can be exhausting and can cause friction in your relationships. Using humor Karen guides the reader to discover the freedom and reward of living a life "out of control", in which you allow God to be seated in the rightful place in your life. Karen uses spiritual references to implement to bring us to a place to let it go. There is a DVD and workbook to accompany this study. We will be doing this study on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m., in the basement of the church. We will start on April 8, 2015.

.April is Month of the Young Child& Child Abuse Prevention Month

In 2014, LSI’s early childhood programs made more than 14,900 home visits to Iowa families with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. These programs help parents learn about child development, parenting strategies and community resources, and they can also help reduce some of the risk factors that may lead to child abuse or neglect, such as critical stress. LSI often partners with parents who grew up in unstable home environments and desire to give their own children a different quality of life. Your support helps our youngest Iowans grow up healthy and safe!

LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

A New Parenting Path

Page 16: storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com... · Web viewNewsletter- April 2015Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Sunday, April 5, we celebrate Easter Day. It is the highest

When Kalee became a young mom in high school, she knew exactly what kind of parent she didn’t want to be. “My childhood was very different,” she said. “There was a lot of miscommunication on all levels and yelling all the time. I had a lot of trouble growing up, and I didn’t want my kids to go through that.” Instead, Kalee and her partner Shane are finding their own parenting style, thanks to some support from LSI’s Families Together program. Families Together is a voluntary home visitation program that offers families parenting education, community resources, support and more.

“Kalee and Shane are so much fun to work with,” said Gaylene, an LSI caseworker. “They are very good parents. They just needed a little more confidence in their skills.” For example, the family learned new communication tips to use with their son Gabe, age 4. “Before we started the program, Shane and I fought a lot about different parenting styles,” Kalee said. “We would get frustrated when we couldn’t get Gabe to understand what we wanted him to do. We learned how to talk to him better, and now we’re on the same page.”

Through Families Together, LSI can partner with families at any time from before their child is born up to age 18. On average, an LSI caseworker will meet with a family for 10 – 12 months. That approach, which builds trust and relationships, is comforting, Kalee said. “Gaylene feels like a part of our family,” Kalee said. “Gabe always asks when she’s coming. Having her here also helped prepare Gabe for school.”

Kalee hopes her two children will grow up happier than she was, she said. “I don’t think it will be as much of a struggle for them to succeed,” she said. “They will feel more secure and loved than I felt growing up.”

You’re kind of a big deal. Don’t believe me. We recently received your gift of $350 to Lutheran World Relief. Thank you! I’d like to share a story of the great work your gift will support. Sevu once struggled to support his family on his farm in Kenya’s notoriously dry Makindu district. The region has a rainy season during which the Makindu river bed fills with water, but farmers didn’t have a good way to capture that water. This made it difficult for Sevu to grow food to eat and sell year round.

With your gift, you provide lasting solutions for farmers like Sevu. With local partners, we worked to install a sand dam—a structure built onto a dry river bed that captures water-filled sand and holds it in place. Now, Sevu and his family have a source of water for growing crops year round and, because of the sand dam, he can afford to send his children to school and they no longer struggle with chronic hunger.
