EL PATITO FEO THE UGLY DUCKLING
1.Era una hermosa tarde a fines del
verano. Mamá pata había hecho su nido
en la orilla del arroyo.
It was a beautiful afternoon at the end of
summer. Mother duck had made her
nest at the side of the brook.
2.-Estos patitos tardan mucho en romper
el cascarón -dijo, dando un suspiro.
She said breathing a sigh - these
ducklings take a long time to break the
shell -.
3.Mamá pata estaba sola empollando
sus huevos. Los demás patos se hallaban
demasiado ocupados nadando y no
venían a conversar con ella. Por fin, los
patitos empezaron a golpear el cascarón
con el pico hasta que lograron romperlo
y pudieron salir. Uno a uno, se
aventuraron a dar sus primeros pasos
por el nido. 4.Después de unos cuantos

they looked around. The ducklings were
amazed.
5.- ¡Qué grande es el mundo! -decían, y
en efecto así parecía después de haber
estado metidos en un huevo. - El mundo
es mucho más grande -explicó mamá
pata-. ¿Ya salieron todos? ¡Ay, no!
Todavía falta aquel huevo grande. Una
vieja pata se acercó a mirar. -Ese debe
ser un huevo de pavo -dijo-.
- How big the world is! - they said, and in
fact it seemed this way after having been
stuck in in an egg. -The world is much
bigger- momma duck explained. Did all
already come out? Oh, no! Still not that
big egg. And old momma came closer to
look. -that one egg must come from a
turkey- she said.
¡No te imaginas mi preocupación!
That very thing happened to me once.
You do not imagine my worry! The little
one did not get close to water however
much I tried to force him. My advice is
that you leave that quiet egg and not pay
attention to him - the old duck
concluded.
7."No importa", pensó mamá pata. "Voy
a empollarlo un rato más".
No matter, thought momma duck. I am
going to brood it awhile more.
8.Al poco tiempo, mamá pata escuchó
un "toc, toc". Era el nuevo bebé que
sacaba la cabeza del cascarón.
Soon after, momma duck heard a toc,
toc. It was the new baby forcing his head
out of the shell.
9."Éste no es un pavo", pensó mamá
pata al verlo caminar. "Pero es tan
grande y feo… Bueno, haré lo mejor que
pueda".
This is not a turkey, thought momma
duck seeing it walk. But it is so big and
ugly, I will make the best of this.

Next, momma duck corralled the family
of birds.
12.-Háganle la venia a la gran pata mayor
-dijo mamá pata-. La cinta que lleva
alrededor de la pata le confiere
distinción y honorabilidad.
Momma duck said -make the consent to
the great big duck-. The ribbon the duck
is wearing confers distinction and honor.
13.Los patitos hicieron la venia con gran
respeto. Luego, el pavo se acercó a
mirarlos.
The ducklings received him with great
respect. Next, the turkey approached to
look at them.
14.-¡Nunca había visto un patito tan
grande y feo! -graznó.
- never had been seen a duckling so big
and ugly! - they squawked.
15.Ahí comenzaron los problemas del
patito feo.
medida que pasaba el tiempo, las cosas
empeoraban. Nadie lo quería porque era
diferente.
bosque. Como no sabía dónde estaba,
decidió seguir corriendo sin parar. Por
fin, llegó hasta un gran pantano en
donde vivían unos patos salvajes. Allí se
quedó, escondido bajo un matorral. Se
sentía agotado y muy solo. A la mañana

alone. Next morning, the wild ducks
approached to look at the newcomer.
16.-Hola- dijeron. - ¿Quién eres? - -Hello- they said. -Who are you? -
17.-Soy un pato de granja -respondió el
patito feo, notando que los patos
salvajes tenían un aspecto muy diferente
a los patos del corral.
The ugly duckling responded, seeing that
the wild ducks had a very different
aspect to the ducks of the corral - I am a
duck of the farm -.
18.- ¿Un pato? -exclamaron-. ¡Jamás
habíamos visto un pato tan torpe como
tú! Pero puedes quedarte aquí, si
quieres.
ponerse rojas y amarillas. Había llegado
el otoño. Un día, el patito feo estaba
buscando algo de comer entre los
juncos, cuando dos jóvenes gansos se
posaron junto a él.
- a duck? - they exclaimed. Never we had
seen a so clumsy duck like you! But you
can remain here, if you want. There is
room for all. The ugly duckling was happy
and could have remained in the swamp,
far from the cruel animals of the farm.
The weather began to cool and the
leaves of the trees began to get red and
yellow. The autumn had come. One day,
the ugly duckling was searching for
something to eat between the rushes,
when two clumsy youngsters landed next
to him.
19.- ¡Hola, amigo! -saludaron-. ¿Quieres
venir con nosotros? Vamos a otro
pantano, donde hay otros gansos como
nosotros.
- hello, friend! - they greeted him. Do you
want to come with us? We are going to
another swamp, where there are
another geese like us.
20.Diciendo esto, alzaron el vuelo. Al
patito feo le gustó la idea. Sin embargo,
no había alcanzado a moverse cuando
escuchó unos disparos. Aterrado, vio que
los gansos caían al pantano. Un perro
enorme corría a sacarlos. Se oían
disparos de escopeta por todas partes.
Saying this, they took flight. The ugly

jumped on top of the ugly duckling. The
dog looked at him for an instant and
then he went away.
21.- ¡Qué suerte! -exclamó el patito feo,
jadeante-. Soy tan feo que ni siquiera los
perros me quieren.

short of breath. I am so ugly that not
even the dogs want me. The ugly
duckling spent all day long hidden among
the rushes. Finally, when the sun went
down, the dogs went away and there
were no more shots. Then, he came out
of the water and he ran about the forest.
Already it was of night and the wind blew
strongly. All of a sudden, the ugly
duckling found himself in front of a
house than appeared to be abandoned.
he perceived a tenuous light through the

wind, the ugly duckling thought. Then he
got inside through a crack in the door
and he looked for a corner to spend the
night. In the house lived an old woman
with a cat and a hen.
22.- ¿Y quién es éste? -preguntó la
anciana al día siguiente, al ver al patito
feo. Él le explicó todo lo que había
sucedido.
- And who is this? - the old woman asked
on the following day, when seeing the
ugly duckling. He explained all that had
happened to him.

pantano. Al fin, el patito feo le dijo a la
gallina:

been at the swamp. At last, the ugly

26.- ¡Estás loco! -comentó la gallina-.
Pero no te voy a detener.
- you are crazy! - the hen observed. But I
am not going to stop you.
aves tan hermosas.

agua del estanque empezó a congelarse.
Era imposible soportar tanto frío.
The frozen winds of winter began to
blow. Shortly, the pond's water began to

estaba calientita. Lamentablemente, los
hijos del campesino no lo dejaban en
paz. Se la pasaban correteándolo por
