PRELUDE: Musician choice OPENING HYMN: Glory and praise to our God, who alone gives light to our days. Many are the blessings He bears to those who trust in His ways. 1. We, the daughters and sons of Him who built the valleys and plains, Praise the wonders our God has done in ev'ry heart that sings. 2. In His wisdom He strengthens us, like gold that's tested in fire. Though the power of sin prevails, our God is there to save. Text: Psalm 65, 66; Dan Schutte, b. 1947, © 1976, Daniel L. Schutte and OCP.
GLORIA: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God Almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only begotten son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For You alone are the Holy one, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the most high Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the Glory of God the Father, Amen, Amen.
RESPONSE: Lord, I Love Your Commands by Michael Guimont ALLELUIA. C R E E D ( s p o k e n ) I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and
invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from
God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all
things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of
the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was
buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic
Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life
of the world to come. Amen.
PREPARATION: Prayer of St. Francis
1. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord, And where there’s doubt, true faith in you. 2. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness only light, And where there’s sadness ever joy.
Dedicated to Mrs. Frances Tracy. Text: Based on the prayer traditionally ascr. to St. Francis of Assisi, 1182–1226. Text and music © 1967, OCP. All rights reserved. Sebastian Temple
3. O Master, grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled, as to console, To be understood, as to understand, To be loved, as to love, with all my soul. 4. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, In giving of ourselves that we receive, And in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

COMMUNION: Only This I Want Text based on Philippians 3:7–16; 2:15, 18. Text and music © 1981, OCP. All rights reserved. Dan Schutte
Refrain: Only this I want: but to know the Lord, and to bear His cross, so to wear the crown He wore.
1. All but this is loss, worthless refuse to me, for to gain the Lord is to gain all I need. MEDITATION.
PRAYER: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. CLOSING HYMN: All the ends of the earth, all you creatures of the sea, lift up your eyes to the wonders of the Lord. For the Lord of the earth, the Master of the sea, has come with justice for the world.
1. Break into song at the deeds of the Lord, the wonders he has done in ev’ry age.
2. Heaven and earth shall rejoice in his might; ev’ry heart, ev’ry nation call him Lord.

Reading I: 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12: The two books of Kings form a unit, the fourth part of a block consisting of
the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. First Kings begins with a lengthy account of the person and life
of Solomon, David’s successor. Taken together the two books of Kings show, as does the book of Deuteronomy
does, that man’s destiny depends on his fidelity to God. In addition, the books of the Kings show us the
knowledge of God that Israel acquired over its history, and how it acquired it. The most
important trait of Solomon is his wisdom, to which our Lord refers to in the Gospel. Our
passage from 1 Kings tells us how Solomon gained this wisdom. God appeared to Solomon
in a dream at Gibeon telling Solomon that He would grant him what he asked. In verse 9
Solomon says to God: “Give thy servant therefore an understanding mind to govern thy
people that I may discern between good and evil: for who is able to govern this Thy great
people?” God granted Solomon’s request. Solomon’s wisdom can be seen in the way he administers justice and
in the way that his court and kingdom are organized. The more he acts in wisdom, the wiser he becomes.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 119: 57, 72, 76-77, 127-128, 129-130 (97a): The responsorial psalm for this
weekend is a reflection on the word of God, and is prayer to both know it and keep it. This psalm has to do with
the Law of God which is mentioned in every verse but the emphasis on the importance of the Law is in the
context of God’s covenant with His people. Knowing the Law and keeping it has been the psalmist’s good
fortune in this world and he appreciates the priceless value of the Law of God. Because he acts in accordance
with the Law, he is hopeful that the Lord will show him favor. He asks the Lord to “make His face shine upon
him” by teaching him His statutes which are “wonderful”.
Reading II: Romans 8:28-30: St. Paul tells us that awareness of God as Father helps us see all the events of our
life as orchestrated by the lovable will of God. God gives us what is best for us. Our Father expects us to
discover His paternal love in adverse as well as in favorable events. In verse 29 Christ is called the “first-born”
for many reasons. He is the first-born of all creation because He is eternally begotten and because all things
were made through Him (Jn 1:3). He is also the new Adam and therefore the head of the human race in the
work of redemption. He is “the first-born from the dead” and is therefore the head of all those who have
reached heaven and all who are awaiting their future resurrection.
Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52: Our Gospel passage for Mass this weekend finds Jesus continuing to teach about
the kingdom of heaven in parables. The parables for this week are hidden treasure, a pearl, and a net. Jesus
shows the supreme value of the kingdom of heaven and the attitude people need if they are to attain it. The
parables this week are very similar yet there are differences. The treasure means abundance of gifts and the
pearl indicates the beauty of the kingdom. The treasure is something stumbled upon while the pearl is the
result of a lengthy search. However, in both cases, the finder is filled with joy. The treasure may be thought of
as divine revelation. It is so rich that it can provide teaching that applies to all times and situations. Therefore,
the Church and her pastors preach, not new things but a single unchanging truth contained in the treasure of
revelation: for the past 2,000 years the Gospel has always been “good news”. The net in verse 47 is a drag net
which is both very long and wide. When it is pulled back into the boat, it is filled not only with the desired fish
but with all sort of things: algae, weeds, and rubbish among other things. The net is the Church and the sea is
the world. Continued on the next page...

Reflection: This passage from Matthew could have three subtitles: Giving All to Gain All, The Sorting Out,
and Treasures New and Old. These parables teach us about the incomparable value of the kingdom. What we
are willing to give to attain it (the giving and gaining); what must we discard and what must we keep (the
sorting); and the treasure is the Gospel which is at once old and new. Accepting the message of Christ (which
means accepting Christ Himself because He is the pearl and treasure), entering the community of His Church
and living faithfully the Church’s life is worth more than anything else. All the parables we have heard today
and from the last two weekends illustrate the wisdom of Jesus. His wisdom surpassed the old wisdom of the
Law and the prophets. However, Jesus’ wisdom did not nullify the wisdom of the old Law and the prophets,
rather, Jesus added to that wisdom. In the first reading Solomon asked God for wisdom. In Jesus we have
Wisdom personified. But Jesus’ wisdom is not applied only to religious knowledge. It applies to all knowledge.
Living one’s life according to the wisdom of Jesus leads to fullness of life. Remember, Christianity is not just a
set of beliefs; it is a way of life. For example, Christian office holders are better leaders for being Christians
because their faith and God’s grace enable them to serve with less thought for themselves and more thought
for the good of all. Christian students excel because their thirst for knowledge is coupled with a thirst to
discover more about the wisdom and beauty of God hidden in the world He created. The same goes for
Christian athletes, artists and so on. Christ takes our hands and leads us into a fuller, more intense life in every
way, as no other friend can do. Perhaps this week we might reflect on the following: 1) What have I longed
for, searched for, and found; what am I still searching for; 2) What does the parable of the net and its
interpretation convey to me; 3) How well do I understand “all these things” that Jesus has been teaching; what
do I find difficult to understand; and 4) What am I able to bring forth from my storeroom; what is my call and
service within the family of Jesus? Lord, my treasure is your friendship. It gives life and meaning to everything
else: my relationships, my responsibilities, my dreams, and my battles. You have so much you want to give me
and so much you want to give others through me. All you need is for me to say “yes” to you each day, to follow
your example of fidelity, to do your will, and love my neighbor as myself. It is so simple yet so hard. Lord, teach
us the wisdom of God….
