The Terry Foundation is nearing its seventeenth anniversary and what began modestly in 1986 is now the largest private source of scholarships for the University o f Texas and Texas A&M University. This April, the universities selected 350 outstanding Texas high school seniors as interview finalists for Terry Scholarships.

W hen the interviews were completed, 166 new 2003 Terry Scholars were selected. We are indebted to the Scholars and Scholar Alumni who joined the members of our Board of Directors in serving on eleven interview panels to select the new class. These freshmen will join their fellow upper-classmen next fall in College Station and Austin as part of the largest group of Terry Scholars ever enrolled at one time. The spring o f 2003 also brought graduation to 71 Terry Scholars, many of whom graduated with honors. They are all moving on to further their education in graduate studies or start their careers. They now join a growing body of Scholar Alumni known as the Terry Foundation Family.

Howard L. TerryRecently the Board of Directors approved the expansion of the Terry FoundationScholarship Program to the University o f H ouston. The first U H Terry Scholars will be selected in interviews held in April 2004, with the inaugural class to enter the U H central campus in the fall o f 2004.O n behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we would also like to thank the Scholars, Scholar Alumni and the staffs at Texas A&M University and The University o f Texas for their invaluable assistance during our annual interview process in Austin, Houston, and Dallas.“Remember, the harder you work, the luckier you get.. .”Work hard, do well, and make us all proud.

T he Terry Foundation’s goal is to improve and develop the State o f Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state’s Finest public universities. T he Foundation hopes that these students will have a significant

impact on the future leadership o f the state and nation. To achieve this goal, the Foundation awards full scholarships to students who meet the high standards set by the Founders.

W hat began in 1986 as a small scholarship program is now the largest private source o f scholarships for the University o f Texas and Texas A& M University with over 600 Terry Scholars enrolled. But its origin was neither large nor legendary - and as hum ble and low-profile as the Founders whose name it bears.

T he Terry scholarship program was born o f a desire o f Howard and Nancy Terry to help young people to help themselves. A long-time resident o f Houston, Howard Terry had been active for many years in banking, construction, real estate, and oil & gas. W ith profound business success over the decades and their family’s needs met, the Terrys developed a growing desire to give back to the com m unity and, specifically, to help young people to reach their goals in higher education.

In 1986, the Terrys began considering a variety o f options in their desire to make a lasting contribution to the future o f Texas higher education. After evaluating ideas as varied as university campus construction projects and endowed-chair faculty positions, the Terrys were still not satisfied.Knowing that universities are more than buildings and classrooms,H ow ard Terry had repeatedly declined to allow the universities to honor his previous contributions by placing his name on campus structures: “M ortar & bricks will eventually be torn dow n,” he reasoned. The Terrys believed, in the long term, that a university, like the state it represents, is only as

good as the educated citizens it produces. Thus was born a desire to invest in the students who w ould attend the public colleges and universities in Texas.

The Terrys’ desire to help young people was influenced greatly by Howard Terry’s own college experience: he had attended the University o f Texas on an athletic scholarship, where he was captain o f the football team and graduated in 1938. His family origins in Cameron, Texas were modest and it was only through the generosity o f others that his college education had been made possible. Mr. Terry never forgot the helping hand that he had received in attending college and was determ ined to extend that same help to a new generation of students.

After seeking counsel from sources that included U T coach Darrell Royal (an original Foundation Board M ember) and H ouston attorney R hett Cam pbell (Board M ember since inception and now Board Chair), the Terrys determined that their most lasting contribution would be through a perpetual endowm ent that would provide college scholarships for students who had dem onstrated the capacity to become outstanding future leaders and who needed financial assistance to achieve their goals in higher education. From this simple concept, the Terry Foundation was created in 1986 to be the source of a perpetual scholarship program.

In the early years o f the Foundation, all the Scholars at the annual picnic could sit together around just a few tables.

T he first scholarshiprecipients, known sincethen as “Terry Scholars,”were selected at interviewsheld in the spring o f1987. T hat original classo f seven teen 1987 Scholars at a 2002 Orientation session. .Scholars were joined in

the 1988-1989 academic year by 17 additional recipients. Over the years, the num ber o f Scholars selected has increased, with the most recent spring 2003 interviews having resulted in the selection o f 166 new freshman Scholars. These recipients will join the upper-class Scholars in College Station and Austin to num ber over 600 Terry Scholars enrolled for the 2003-2004 academic year. In the fall 2004, the Foundation Scholarship Program will expand for the first time in its history, when Terry Scholars will be named at the University o f Houston.

Since its inception, the Terry Scholarship program has assisted over 1,100 Texas college students to achieve their goals in higher education. T he Foundation Board now oversees an endowm ent o f over $100 million and includes two members who are Terry Scholar A lum ni. C hartered to exist into perpetuity, the

Foundation is designed to continue in the future to provide a greater num ber o f scholarships each year.

Howard and Nancy Terry continue to be active participants in the scholarship program that bears their name. It has become larger than they ever imagined, fulfilling in the process their dreams o f making a difference in the lives o f students across the state.

Despite his extraordinary success in ventures that made the Terry Foundation possible, Howard Terry observes that “the Terry Foundation is the most im portant thing I’ve done in my life, because it’s enabled me to help more people than I would have ever been able to do otherwise.”

The earliest Scholar classes at each university numbered as few as eight.

t h e TERRY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMCriteria

T he Terry Foundation awards scholarships to Texas high school seniors who have been accepted for admission to the University o f Texas at Austin, Texas A & M University at College Station, or, beginning in the fall o f 2004, the University o f

Houston. To be selected to receive a scholarship, potential Terry Scholars m ust dem onstrate academic excellence, leadership, and financial need.

Terry Scholars are distinguished by a deep-rooted desire to enrich the general welfare o f the com m unity and an established record o f leadership. In order to select Scholars w ith the greatest potential for success, the Foundations selection committees focus on candidates w ith a dem onstra ted h istory o f invo lvem ent in activities, outstanding scholastic achievement, and a well-rounded personality marked by a desire to succeed.

Nom inations for Terry Scholarship awards are accepted only from the designated offices o f the University o f Texas, Texas A& M University, and the University o f Houston. Nom inations are not accepted from any other source.

Board Meeting — Chairman of the Board Rhett Campbell and Board Members Carter Overton and John Storms.

The Selection ProcessEach year in April, the Terry Foundation announces the new class o f Terry Scholars after an intense two-step selection process. Early each spring, the universities nominate candidates from the freshman class that will matriculate the next fall. In selecting nom inations, the universities adhere to the selection criteria guidelines established by the Terry Foundation.

W hile the num ber o f nom inations and subsequent scholarships has grown substantially since the first scholarships were awarded in 1987, the process to win a scholarship has remained intensely competitive. In spring o f 2003, the University o f Texas and Texas A& M University were each limited to 173 nom inations from the thousands o f applications received.

The Foundation adm inistration invites the finalists to formal interviews conducted concurrently in Austin, Houston, and Dallas. Finalists meet with a six-member panel consisting o f members o f the Foundation Board o f Directors, Alumni Scholars and current Terry Scholars. The interview panels make the final selections and new Scholars are notified prior to May 1st o f the interview year.

In April 2003, the eleven interview panels m et with 350 finalists for the final selection process. O f those finalists, 166 were selected for Terry Scholarship Awards.

The StipendT he Terry Scholarship Award holds the potential to be a full, four- year stipend. Initially, the scholarship is awarded for a Scholar’s first year o f college and is renewed annually at the discretion o f the Board o f Directors. In order to continue as a Terry Scholar, a student must maintain a cumulative 2.3 GPA, meet the requirements for m andatory attendance at specific Terry Foundation events, and fulfill other reporting requirements.

The Terry Foundation seeks to provide adequate financial support for each Terry Scholar so that students may concentrate on academics and college-related activities, w ithout having to incur any debt to finance their education. In addition, the Foundation wants to eliminate the need for Scholars to work during the college years.

The am ount o f the stipend is based on the full cost to attend the universities, including tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board, and miscellaneous expenses. Over the years, the am ount o f the stipend has increased each year due to rises in cost o f living and tuition. The actual specific am ount o f the stipend will vary for each Scholar, depending on other scholarship awards and the Scholar’s family’s ability to contribute to the cost o f college.

FundingThe Terry Scholarship Program is funded by the earnings o f an endowm ent that has been provided solely by the Founders and is managed by the Terry Foundation. T he current endowm ent is slightly in excess of $ 100 million. The Foundation is structured to exist into perpetuity and anticipates additional growth based on incremental endowm ent by the Founders.

T he Foundation annual picnic is held the last Sunday in April on the grounds o f the W inedale Historical Center near Round Top, Texas. All o f the Scholars from both universities meet together for the only time each year for an informal gathering that honors the graduating senior Scholars.

The 2003 picnic was highlighted by warm spring w eather and a record attendance: approximately 300 current Scholars were joined by the Foundation Board Members and staff,Alumni Scholars and their families, and guests from the universities.

Catered lunch was followed by the presentation o f gifts to the graduating senior Scholars. Following tradition, each Scholar took the m icrophone to speak briefly o f their future plans and then, as a group, honored Howard & Nancy Terry with gifts from each school’s class o f senior Scholars.

Following the formalities, the university Scholar Student organizations sponsored a fun-filled competition between the universities, fondly labeled as the “Terry Olympics.” After a series o f unique “sporting” events, Texas A& M was nam ed the winner o f the 2003 Olympics.

Texas A&M University Academic building.

T exas A& M University, the Lone Star State’s first public institution o f higher learning, is one o f the select few universities in the nation to boast triple land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant status.

The 127-year-old university is located in College Station, a m edium -sized com m unity that is approxim ately equidistant among the state’s most m etropolitan areas. Its 5,200-acre campus is one o f the largest in the nation and is the hom e o f the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, which opened in November o f 1997.

Texas A & M has long been known nationally for its school spirit and traditions, including the fact that its students stand throughout football games as the Twelfth M an to indicate symbolically their willingness to suit up and play if needed. More recently, it has expanded its reputation to include national recognition for attracting top students, innovative research programs, and exceptional

academic programs in a host o f areas. In recognition o f its enhanced academic and related research programs, Texas A& M has been selected for membership in the prestigious American Association o f Universities.

The university’s student body includes some of this country’s best students. Texas A& M , for example, has consistently ranked among the nation’s top dozen schools in enrollm ent o f new National M erit Scholars. In all, it has more than 2,500 students receiving major four-year academic scholarships and over 20,000 receiving some form o f scholarship aid.

W ith more than 45,000 students, Texas A& M ranks among the five largest universities nationally. Am ong those students are more than 8,000 graduate and professional-school students. Included are students from all 50 states and more than 110 foreign countries. W omen now represent almost half o f the student body at the school that was once all male and all military. A lthough

military training has not been m andatory for more than a quarter o f a century, some 2,000 young men and women still choose to participate in the university’s Corps o f Cadets. The Corps continues to commission more military officers than any institution except the service academies.

Texas A& M ranks am ong the top 10 universities nationally in endowm ent value, reflecting its ability to support world-class faculty and facilities and other aspects o f the academic process. T he faculty includes a Nobel Laureate, two winners o f the National Medal of Science and more than 25 members who have been elected to either the National Academy o f Sciences or the National Academy o f Engineering.

T he university’s campus has num erous state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities, including a research cyclotron, now one of only three o f its caliber in the world. The university also has a leading chemical characterization center and various installations that enable it to be in the forefront in biotechnology and numerous other disciplines in both the life and physical sciences and in engineering.

The research work o f an outstanding faculty in exceptional facilities places Texas A& M high in rankings o f major universities by the National Science Foundation. The most recent NSF ranking placed Texas A & M am ong the top 15, and the university’s volume o f research has grown to approximately $400 million annually. T he research projects supported by that funding

Texas A&M University boasts a 5,200 acre campus.encompass all o f the university’s academic colleges — agriculture and life sciences, architecture, business, education, engineering, geosciences, liberal arts, science, and veterinary medicine.

N ot to be limited by state or national boundaries, Texas A& M is firmly committed to a global reach and perspective. Its international outreach efforts include mem oranda o f understanding with more than 85 foreign institutions and organizations in Europe, Asia, South America and Central America. In addition, Texas A& M operates the Santa Chiara Study C enter in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy, and a facility in Mexico City. It is scheduled to open a branch campus in Q atar in September o f 2003. All costs for building and

operating the engineering- oriented cam pus in the Persian G u lf country are being paid by the Q atar Foundation for Education, Science and C om m unity Development.
