COURSES & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TO BECOME GOVERNMENT TEACHER IN INDIA

Are you aspiring to become a Teacher in Government Institutions and are unaware regarding the

courses to purse, to become eligible for the Teaching posts? We are going to list the courses and

eligibility criteria required to apply for these course here.

In order to choose the right course, you have to ascertain the level at which you intend to teach I.E

(Standard 1 to 5 (PRT), TGT Standard 6 to 10 and PGT (11 and 12 Standard) and then acquire the

minimum qualification required to apply for these courses. According to the level, you can choose

the courses such as Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)/ M.Ed for TGT, BTC/NTT/B.EI.Ed. for PRT or,

M.P.Ed for PGT etc.

In order to become a Government Teacher, candidate should have the acquired the minimum

educational qualification required for the level they intend to Teach (PRT, TGT, PGT Pre-Primary

Teacher) and should qualify the Central Teacher Eligibility Test/ State Teacher Eligibility Test

Eligibility Criteria for Courses to Become Government Teacher in India

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed): The minimum required eligibility to apply for the Bachelor of

Education is Graduation with minimum 50% from a recognised university. Aspirants should always

check the recognition status of a university institute on the official website of NCTE. Govt of India

has made it mandatory for the Government teachers to acquired B.Ed before 31 March 2019, failing

to do so; they might have to lose their jobs.

Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) (Open and Distance Learning): Aspirants with the mentioned

qualification can also pursue Bachelor of Education through Open and Distance Learning, through

institutions such as IGNOU. The required qualification to Bachelor of Education through Open and

Distance Learning is Graduation with minimum 50 % or Master’s in Science/Social

Science/Commerce/Humanities or Bachelors of Engineering/Technology with 55%

Or

Trained in Primary Education (working) with minimum 2 years experience or Candidates who have

completed NCTE recognized Teacher Education Program.

Pre-School Teacher Education Program: To be eligible to pursue Pre-School Teacher Education

Program candidates are required to pass 10th or equivalent.

Nursery Teacher Education Program/ Elementary Teacher Education Program: 12 or

equivalent with minimum 45%

Diploma in Education (D.Ed.)/ Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.): The minimum

qualification to apply for the Diploma in Education (D.Ed.)/ Bachelor of Physical Education is 12 or

equivalent with minimum 50%.

Physical Education Program (C.P.Ed.): 12 or equivalent with minimum 45% or 12 or equivalent

with minimum 40% and should have participated in State or National Games.

Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.): Candidate has a Bachelor of Physical Education

(Three year old)

Or

Graduate candidates should have represented the state / university in sports / athletics.

Or

In the graduate and inter-collegiate sports / games tournaments, have secured first, second or third

positions / passed the course in NCC certificate or adventure games.

Graduate with one year training in sports science, sports management, sports coaching, yoga,

Olympic education, sports journalism etc.

Master of Education Program (M.Ed.): Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) with minimum 55%.

Master of Education Program (M.Ed.) (Part Time): Graduate with minimum 2 years experience

Education/Administrative field and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) with minimum 55%.

Master of Education Program (M.Ed.) (Open and Distance Education Learning System)

Candidates will be admitted either in accordance with the policy of the state government or on the

basis of the marks obtained in the qualifying examination conducted for these courses by respective

institutions. According to the policy of the respective State Government, reservations will be given to

SC / ST / OBC / Handicapped / women candidates etc.

Merely qualifying these examinations is not sufficient , candidates are required to qualify the

Teachers’ eligibility test in order for to be eligible for the Teacher posts in various government

institutions, Selection procedure may include written examinations and personality assessment tests

too.
