Dear Conservaonists and Fishermen, Its officially autumn and Im just back from a trip with my girlfriend to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina what an amazing place. Fishing a secon of the park called Ramsay Falls”, slowly inching upriver among giant boulders and old- growth trees, we were rewarded with beauful nave monster Brookies – the largest being five inches (facebook.com/groups/longislandtu). If youve never seen the Smokies during the fall, I highly recommend it, there is more diversity of trees (and animals) than anywhere in the naon – and the fishing is excellent! Back to real life! This season we have some great presentaons, starng this November where Joe Demalderis will present on the best ways to fish the west branch of the Delaware River. As for restoraon and cleanups – weve had a few board and commiee meengs to discuss local rivers and are in the process of reaching out to neighboring chapters and scheduling some work. We are also working closely with the DEC, who will also be scheduling a WAVE training session in Long Island this May – for those of you inter- ested in entomology, check out what that would mean for our chapter and our streams at www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/92229.html. Dear Conservationists and Fishermen,

It’s officially autumn and I’m just back from a trip with my girlfriend to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina

– what an amazing place. The mountains were covered in peak colors – every shade of red, yellow, brown and even purple. We spent the trip walking crystal streams and studying the trees in North America’s most diverse habitat. Fishing a section of the park called “Ramsay Falls”, slowly inching upriver among giant boulders and old-growth trees, we were rewarded with beautiful native monster Brookies – the largest being five inches (facebook.com/groups/longislandtu). If you’ve never seen the Smokies during the fall, I highly recommend it, there is more diversity of trees (and animals) than anywhere in the nation – and the fishing is excellent!

Back to real life! The steelheaders are returning victorious, the fall Delaware trip had fish on the line, and now we’re getting ready for the season of planning and work ahead. This season we have some great presentations, starting this November where Joe Demalderis will present on the best ways to fish the west branch of the Delaware River.

As for restoration and cleanups – we’ve had a few board and committee meetings to discuss local rivers and are in the process of reaching out to neighboring chapters and scheduling some work. We are also working closely with the DEC, who will also be scheduling a WAVE training session in Long Island this May – for those of you inter-ested in entomology, check out what that would mean for our chapter and our streams at www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/92229.html. We’ll keep you posted on all fronts!

It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the battle of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's subscribing to the proposition that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the solution of our trout and salmon problems. Ken’s Korner T.U. Tips Use Split Shot to Assist in Mixing Lacquers - Fly tiers use various lacquers, such as head cements and col-ored lacquers, during their tying. Lacquers that are not used very often tend to separate in their contain-ers and need to be mixed before use. If a Split Shot is placed in with the lacquer, they will assist in mixing the liquid when the container is shaken. Check Craft Shops for Material - Be sure to check craft shops for fly-tying materials. There you will find such items as closed-cell foam, beads, pom-poms (for egg patterns), cloth, paint, chenille, etc. (Lou Fitzner) Uses for a Pet Comb or a Mustache Comb - By using a pet comb or a mustache comb (available at drug stores), one can comb hair and tips from a hide. Hold the fur by the tips and then remove the fur from the hide for a smooth dubbing. One can also comb the "shorts" out of deer hair prior to tying it on for a neater tie-in point. Consider Cloves as an Alternative to MothBalls - With the sizable investment a fly fisher or tier has in flies and tying materials, it is important to safeguard them from moths and other critters. While mothballs and crystals are effective as a deterrent, they will de-stroy plastic if they come in contact with it. Cloves are also said to be an effective deterrent, and they will not harm plastic fly boxes. Carpet Yarn Flies - Jim Weaver was always on the lookout for new types of tying materials. He found one in synthetic carpet yarns such as Antron. Most quality rugs are also pre-treated to repel water, which makes the material good for dry flies. You can weight the fly for use in nymphs. If you have leftover carpeting, pull some loops off the edge. The yarn will have a nice sheen and sparkle. To use the fibers, cut off any adhesive left on the yarn and pick apart the fibers. They can be used as-is or blended with other material to obtain the color or texture you desire.

Use Beadhead Color to Code Flies - The popular beadheads being widely used today come in a vari-ety of colors. Different patterns call for different colors, but the exact finish of a bright bead is prob-ably not critical. What is more important is the weight of the bead. Beads are sold in lightweight metals (brass) and heavier metals (tungsten). If you mix the various weights and colors on your flies, it will be difficult to determine which fly to use in deep runs vs. shallow riffles. To help identify your beadhead flies by type, confine your light-weight beads to certain colors and the heavy beads to other colors. For example, buy the tungsten beads (heavy) in only copper or silver. All other col-ored beads are the lighter ones. By doing this, you can determine at a glance which flies are heavier. Another method would be to tie heavy beads in a faceted design and lighter beads with a round bead. Send your tips to [email protected]

Peter Harris— Silver Trout Award Recipient 2016

The Silver Trout Award is akin to entering the LITU "Hall of Fame". It is not given yearly but only When a significant number of board members and other Silver Trout recipients feel that a certain person has really earned it due to hard work that has gone far and above any expected duty he or she has performed for the chap ter. Chapter positions that Peter Harris has held are, President, Vice President, Secretary, Board Member, LI State Park Laison, Casting For Recovery contact, and a host of others. He has worked tirelessly for the chapter and has indeed earned a unanimous spot as a Silver Trout recipient. Peter Harris has done our chapter proud.

The temporary reduced water releases to the Salmon

River from the Salmon River Reservoir by Brookfield Re-

newable in collaboration with the New York State De-

partment of Environmental Conservation (DEC) were

successful and the flows have been restored.

This has prompted DEC to open fishing in the Lower Fly

Area in the Salmon River today as flows have been re-

turned to 335 cubic feet for second (cfs), the regulated

base flow level.

"DEC's fish hatchery system is a vital part of New York

State's effort to sustain our popular and economically

important recreational fisheries," said DEC Commission-

er Basil Seggos. "The reduced water flows and closure

helped ensure that adequate numbers of salmon en-

tered the Salmon River Hatchery in order to provide

eggs for salmon stocking that support Lake Ontario and

tributary fisheries."

Drought conditions in the Salmon River watershed

forced Brookfield Renewable in collaboration with DEC

to reduce the amount of water released from the Salm-

on River Reservoir on September 29. In addition, DEC

closed the Lower Fly Fishing Area on the Salmon River.

Flows are being increased due to this weekend's antici-

pated rainfall and its effect on reservoir water levels.

Further, the Lower Fly Area is being reopened because

the base flow can now be sustained and Salmon River

Hatchery egg-take operations for Chinook salmon are

The upper boundary of the area is downstream
