Jonathan Leafe, of design agency Strawberry, and David Keel, of brand management firm Sonoco Trident, will share lessons they have learned while building their successful businesses. Mr Leafe said: “Strawberry began life in 1993 with just two employees but a clear vision of what we wanted to deliver to our clients. “Twenty years on, we’ve grown to become one of the region’s leading marketing and web design agencies, and every day along the way there have been opportunities to learn something new. “As well as sharing some of the lessons that have had the biggest impact on us, I’m looking forward to hearing from other local businesses about what they believe are the keys to success.” The breakfast event is the latest in a series aimed at small and growing businesses and will be held at the KC Stadium on Tuesday, September 10. InBrief Hull businesses boosted by banks’ £18m funding ECONOMY: SMEs in Hull have benefited from more than £406,000 of funding from NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). The two banks’ SME customers have received the money in the first year of the Government’s Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS). As whole, businesses in the city have borrowed £18,125,601 through the scheme, which began in August last year. The two banks have now allocated £4.3bn of discounted FLS loans to 25,000 UK SMEs. NatWest and RBS are now looking at what else they could be doing to help back British businesses and further support the UK economy. SMEs and the public have been invited to give their experiences and feedback by visiting www.independentlendingreview.co.uk and completing a survey that will form an essential part of the report. NatWest’s managing director for commercial banking in the north of England, Tony Kelly, said: “We are a year into FLS now and I’m really pleased our fee free lending offer has helped so many local businesses. “As ever, we want to do more and I would urge local SMEs to log on and provide their valuable insight to the independent lending review. “We’re challenging ourselves to do more to support business and the economy but it is through this direct and honest feedback that we will be able to examine all aspects of our lending policies.” Employment law talk LAW: Gosschalks Solicitors is hosting a free event to explain changes to employment law. Businessmen Antony Langley, Linton Brown and Malcolm Scott have joined club chairman Neil Hudgell, vice chairman Rob Crossland, chief executive Mike Smith and foot- ball director Phil Lowe on the Robins’ board, with Colin Hut- ton remaining in his role as club president. The appointments will help the club increase its commer- cial and social appeal, accord- ing to Mr Hudgell. “Rob Crossland and I have made no secret of our desire to bring in new ideas and expert- ise to help take the club for- ward,” he said. “The new directors have joined us to provide financial stability and open up new commercial and development opportunities. “From this position of sta- bility, the club will be best placed to grasp all opportun- ities for success on and off the field.” Mr Langley joins the club as financial director, having steered the Red and Whites through a detailed financial review over the past few months. His Beverley-based business, Teckno Developments, has been a long-standing sponsor of the Robins and he said he is delighted to be joining the board.
