BURDEN GH THE BRAIN."Vc have long been thoroughly

sick of the perpetual reference, oraland written, to the 80th of June andthe piodigious doings of people, who by their deeds on that memo-

rable day and tho two or three daysnext following placed the countryunder everlasting obligation tothem. Such talk, in dull timesand a dull town, for a vt liilc servedas a little diversion. So far, and inthe absence of something better, itwas acceptable. But we have hadenough quite enough in fact, toomuch. It has become nauseat-ing. "We --.nnt a rest, a long andnever-endin- g rest, from this staleand musty old preserve. And yetit seems that we are doomed to keepon wanting, and want is destined tolord it over us. Some people itwould appear, have so dwelt uponthe distinguished services they ren-

dered on that great day of all daysin the wot Id's history in generaland Hawaii's history in particular, and so brooded over the wrongsthey have endured by not havingbeen hoisted into positions of emo-

lument, that the services and thewrongs have assumed the form of ahurtful burden on the brain. Nodoubt the alllicted sufferers have thesympathy of all good-hearte- d peo-

ple, but to attempt the removal ofthe burden would be a futile under-taking. It would be a real relief ifthese people could only be given tosee that their special claims are per-ceptible only to themselves, andthey are a very small piopoition ofthe whole community.

theIjmttincmntract.Editor Bulletin : As

colums have been used to expiesssome opinions on the contract formatting recently awarded, allow usto state, that the advertisement call-ing for tenders was duly made andresponded to by us among others. The tenders have been published, and we were fairlj' beaten. Hadour bid been the lowest we shouldhave expected the contract, as itwas not, we not only have no faultto find, but consider the Govern-ment did right in awarding it to theone who was lowest. Our price wasbased on white labor, but we didnot decline to compete with Chinese.

We trust no one will take occasionto place any blame for us, where weattach none ourselves,

COMPARISONS ARE 0DI00S.Editok Bulletin : Your cor-

respondent who writes under thesignature of L is a little bit off thetrack when he accuses Kaleidoscopeor refers to him ns a stuck pig. Ifor one think K. is right. If L isin so much favor of the Chinese anddeems the action of tho Governmentjust, let mo ask him how he wouldlike to work for Chinese wagos, andis ho aware that whrn tho whiteman leaves here through compul-tio- n

L will find the Chinese will de-mand the same pay as the whitoman? Ho will tell the Governmenthe sabbee just tlic same as haole orMelican man. Does the votingcome from Chinamen who placed theGovernment men in olllce? Whowill vote at the next election? Notquite as many white men, at leastnot for the same Government olll-cial- s.

Should there be any moretrouble L will find that not so manyyouths or men will shoulder a gun, except to piotcct themselves. Weare against you, at least a laigomajority of us, the names of whomI can give if called upon. Like thePortuguese, I leave this country tothose whose only object is gain.

Now you will hear my experienceof those glowing promises duringtho quarantine. I applied for usituation as guard, which 1 got afterwaiting till the labt. On cominga second time for a like situation,I was told by Sir. Reynolds that hedid not want the same men to have theguard situations all the time; hewanted to make a change. So far,so good. Has he done so? No. Buthe kept on uu Englishman that hasonly been in this country a fewmonths, who in that short space

K

time has been kept steady in theemploy of the Board of Ilenllli, aslong as the quarantine lasted. Whyi3 it that this man got tho prefer-ence, ho not being hero at thetime of the excitement of the nowConstitution, neither did he takethe oath to support thoso to gaintheir object? Keep your work;give it to those that never did any-

thing for the benefit of the country.A great many of us can cleat ly seethat we have been duped. Thetime may come again when you willlequiic our aid, but a great manyof us will not be there. Wo don'tknow you nor your clan.

If L is a Chinese lover, let himtake a tour atound the South SeaIslands, Fiji, Friendly Islands, Sa-m-

and Tahiti, lie will rocelveagrand reception. Remember theAnti-Chine- se league ; recollect thatthey arc allowed a vote. L mightwant to make a suggestion to theLegislature to allow the Chinese thoprivilege of voting.

These aic my sentiments. Tiueones don't make piomiscs if theydon't intend to keep them. NowMr. L, come again. Should Mr. Lcorrespond through your columnsagain, I hope lie will not be afiaidto sign his full inline.

Fiiask Hawthoiise.

F. II. had better read L's com-

munication again. He has placedan entirely wrong constitution onit. Its meaning is clear enough, but notwithstanding this fact F. II.has evidently missed the point.

KAUAI NOTES.

The fire near Lihuo that was rc-p- oi

ted in last week's papers, con-

tinued to burn the greater part ofthis week. Many thousand acies ofpasturag"e were dcstioyed, and thefne extended into the forests thatcover our mountains. On Wednes-day night five separate columns ofllame were distinctly visible at dif-

ferent points in the mountains, andit was a very pretty sight, remind-ing one of bivouac fires kindled l3an encampment. A heavy rainfallon Thursday effectually quelled theflames.

A very impressive servico washeld at the German Lutherancliuich last Sunday, in memory ofthe late Emperor of German, peo-ple coming all the way from Koloato attend. Two fine chorals andone funeral hymn wcie ably tender-ed by the choir, which consist ofmale voices only, and the depth oftheir tones added solemnity to thesad music. Rev. Mr. lsenbergcrave a heartfelt uddiess, in whichwas blended soirow for the loss thatGermany and the German peoplehave sustained, and gratitude to theAll-Giv- er for having given themsuch a wise and good nionaicli. Herelated several instances whichproved the late Emperor to li.-u-c

been a God-fearin- g man, and pi.-ye-

that the new Emperor might followin the footsteps of his glorious pre-decessor.

Good Friday was kept as a gene-ral holiday. There was no woikdone at the mill, nor in the fields, and the school was closed. Reli-gious sei vices weie held in the Ger-man church, and also in the Catholicchinch in Kopaia. Both places ofworship were filled with a devoutcongiegation.

Mr. Forsyth is making a tour ofKauai, in order to asceitain whetherour land is capable of growing cof-fee. If so, it will be a new field oflabor for the people.

All at-

tempts in any other establishment arc inferior to mine and not worth theprice you pay. It is an indisputable fact that all over tho world a goodworkman's productions arc always cheaper than a halfmade one's are.Having had orer half a century's practical experience the undersigned isenabled to ornament Cakes in all and the highest styles of art.
