Letter from the Director
Dear Friends,
This past fall it was with great excitement that we celebrated our
one year anniversary. To mark the occasion we hosted the PAPERBALL,
which married the themes of a traditional first anniversary gift and
our exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife, which takes the pulse on a
traditional technique and material. Hundreds of guests came out for
a night of dinner and dancing. As we move into our second full year
at 2 Columbus Circle, we continue our commitment to bringing you
vibrant exhibitions and programs that explore how art, craft, and
design intersect in the visual arts today.
For visitors and members alike, MAD is unique among New York
City cultural institutions. We celebrate living artists in our exhibi-
tions and offer access to artists working daily in our Open Studios.
These bring artists and visitors together in a new way, providing a
behind-the-scenes view into art-making. As they work on new pieces,
artists demonstrate techniques in a variety of mediums. Visitors are
encouraged to ask questions about the materials and artistic pro-
cess, making a connection to finished objects in the galleries while
learning that museum-going can be a participatory, engaging experi-
ence. Be sure to drop by the 6th floor on your next visit.
This spring we’re delighted to present an exciting line-up of exhibi-
tions. Bigger, Better, More: The Art of Viola Frey features the artist’s
monumental ceramic figures, bricolage sculptures, paintings, and
works on paper. Portable Treasuries: Silver Jewelry from the Nadler
Collection is drawn from one of the most comprehensive holdings of
ethnic and contemporary jewelry in the country. Portions of the col-
lection have been generously donated to MAD by collectors Daniel
and Serga Nadler. Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and
David Lieberman Collection, an extraordinary display of the range of
basket making today, also represents a major gift to the collection.
Dead or Alive features works by international contemporary artists
who use organic materials to create engaging and inspiring objects
and installations. The exhibition will highlight the creative pro-
cesses that repurpose natural material, transforming the ordinary
and overlooked into the extraordinary and memorable. Bespoke: The
Handbuilt Bicycle presents a selection of metal bikes, handcrafted by
builders from the United States and abroad, in the MADProjects gallery.
It was with great fanfare that our design restaurant, ROBERT,
opened in December. More is revealed about this wonderful new
addition to the MAD experience on page 16.
Special recognition is due to Board of Trustees
member Nanette L. Laitman for her extraor-
dinarily generous endowment gift of $5 million,
and for taking the lead to establish the
“Laitman Society: Securing the Future.” The
endowment fund is a special and enduring
commitment to the future of the Museum,
our operations, and the field of contemporary
arts, studio craft, and design. The “Laitman Society: Securing the
Future” provides an important opportunity for our patrons to make
legacy gifts and bequests in support of the Museum’s continued growth.
On behalf of everyone here at MAD, we thank you for your continued
support. I hope to see you at our museum soon.

Over the course of three decades, collectors Daniel and Serga Nadler
have assembled a unique collection of silver jewelry from around the
world. The Nadler Collection is one of the most comprehensive
holdings of ethnic and contemporary jewelry in the country. This
inaugural exhibition presents selections from it, generously donated
as a gift to the Museum. Approximately 150 works, including in-depth
selections of jewelry from northern Africa, the northern Indian sub-
continent, and the hill tribes of Southeast Asia are on view, featuring
work by skilled craftsmen. Among the most impressive adornments
in the Nadler Collection is a pair of silver anklets from India, each
weighing almost two pounds. Their size and weight reflect the impor-
tance of silver ornaments as a statement of both fashion and status.
Portable Treasuries: Silver Jewelry from the Nadler Collection is made possible, in part, through the
generosity of the Collectors Circle, a leadership Museum support group.

Viola Frey (1933–2004) was one of the most influential sculptors of
the twentieth century. In the first major retrospective since her death
in 2004, this exhibition features the artist’s gigantic clay figures,
sculptures, and ceramic plates, as well as a selection of her paint-
ings and works on paper. Frey is best known for her gigantic figures
of domineering men and overwrought women. Her work not only
reveals Frey’s early involvement in painting, via the dynamic color
glazes on the surfaces of these sculptures, but she also proves to be
a perceptive observer of gender and power issues in mid-twentieth
century America. The installation, coordinated by Charles Bronfman
International Curator Lowery Stokes Sims, also includes works from
the Museum’s permanent collection and several private collections,
examples of Frey’s collaboration with ceramicist Betty Woodman,
and a selection of ceramics from Frey’s personal collection.
Bigger, Better More: The Art of Viola Frey is co-organized by the Gardiner Museum, Toronto and
the Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin. Paint for the installation was generously donated by
Farrow & Ball.

Slash: Paper Under the Knife, the third exhibition in MAD’s Materials and
Process series, examines the renaissance of traditional materials and
techniques in contemporary art and design. The exhibition takes
the pulse of the international art world’s renewed interest in paper
as a creative medium and source of artistic inspiration, examining
the remarkably diverse use of paper in a range of art forms. Unusual
paper treatments are surveyed, including sculptural site-specific
installations, works cut by lasers, modified books, along with film
and video animation.
Slash: Paper under the Knife is made possible by Kate’s Paperie. Generous additional
support is provided by the Angelica Berrie Foundation.
This exhibition is made possible, in part, through the generous support of the Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam. Additional support is provided by the Office of Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Israel and the Dutch Consulate General.

Dead or AliveApril 27–October 24, 2010Following on the themes presented in MAD’s inaugural exhibition at
2 Columbus Circle, Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary, the exhibition
Dead or Alive features contemporary works created from multiples of
organic materials. Once living parts of flora and fauna are recombined
and rearranged into works of art that address the transience of life
and all that is intriguing and beautiful, and sometimes, uncanny or
even repulsive, in the natural world around us. Over 30 international
artists will showcase works that transform natural materials that
were once produced by or part of living organisms—insects, feathers,
shells, bones, silkworm cocoons, plant materials, and fur—into
intricately crafted and designed installations and sculptures.
New commissions include works by Costa Rican artist Lucia Madriz,
who will create a massive politically charged floor installation made
from black beans and rice; Kate MccGwire, who will create a large
waterfall of pigeon feathers emanating from one of the Museum’s
signature glass bands that cuts across the gallery ceiling; and Shen
Shaomin, who creates imaginary animals made from pulverized
bones. Other artists featured include Jennifer Angus, Nick Cave,
Damien Hirst, Jochem Hendricks, Tessa Farmer, Levi van Veluw,
Susie MacMurray, and Tim Hawkinson.
From the perspective of Chief Curator David McFadden, “This exhi-
bition evokes our deepest emotions about mortality, but at the same
time celebrates the new life given to lifeless materials by these tal-
ented individuals. In the hands of these artists, mute materials are
brought back to life as a work of art. With profound and provocative
associations, organic materials are transformed and resuscitated.”
Dead or Alive is made possible in part by American Express.

Intertwined provides an international look at contemporary basket
making, offering insight into the evolution of the basket from a use-
ful object to a work of art and challenging the notion of what defines
a basket. The baskets in the Lieberman Collection utilize a range of
materials and techniques, from traditional organic to commercial
and often surprising media. Some baskets are made out of zippers,
others of fish skin, and some could be defined as sculptures that
employ non-traditional techniques or materials.
Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection is organized by the
Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona, and curated by Senior Curator Heather
S. Lineberry and Jane Sauer. Presentation of the exhibition at MAD is made possible, in part,
through the generosity of the Inner Circle, a leadership Museum support group.

This fascinating exhibition, to be shown in the MADProjects gallery, will present
handcrafted design creations by a select group of bicycle builders from the United
States and abroad. Michael Maharam, owner of the acclaimed eponymous
textile company and an avid collector, will curate the exhibition in collabora-
tion with Portland-based Sacha White of Vanilla, among the most respected
and inventive individuals working in this field. Bespoke will provide an overview
of the highest state of the bicycle design craft, ranging from fixed gear to road,
cyclocross to mountain, and commuter to stripped down radonneur, designed
expressly for long-distance racing.

Two exciting new additions to MAD’s Permanent Collection are Anne-Karin
Furunes’s Yang Li (2006) and Unknown Soldier 1 (2009). Currently on view in
Slash: Paper Under the Knife, these works have fascinated visitors by creating
an interplay between illusion and reality.
The pieces, at first glance, appear to be photographs. As one approaches the
images, however, they begin to fade and ultimately disappear as the viewer
becomes visually aware of the plain black surface of the paper. What had been
an easily recognizable visage is seen to be a sheet of black paper punctured by
hundreds of small holes. The punched holes vary in diameter; together they are
able to create the illusion of highlights and shadows and thus define the form
with astonishing accuracy. While based on actual photographs, the works are
entirely hand punched.
These pieces were generously donated by Michele and Martin Cohen, allowing the Museum to continue
a practice of acquiring contemporary works from exhibitions for the Permanent Collection.

The search for artists to include in Dead or Alive, which features new
works made from once living things—insects, bones, hair, feath-
ers, seeds and plants—has taken the curatorial team around the
world (by way of the Internet, needless to say) and into some memo-
rable and surprising studios. The artists come from all over the
United States, but also from Cuba, Costa Rica, Belgium, Germany,
the Netherlands, Canada, Norway, China, Spain, and the United
Kingdom. MAD’s focus is on materials and the process of making
art, and the materials of choice for the artists in Dead or Alive are
among the most unexpected yet commonplace. The materials are
the remains of living organisms that inhabited the same world as
we do, and many are sometimes even too familiar to city dwellers—
pigeon feathers, cockroach wings, and mouse skeletons. These
overlooked, discarded, and disdained humble
materials are subjected to physical, psychologi-
cal, and artistic transformation by an inventive
and thought-provoking cadre of artists. Beauty,
craftsmanship, and content are brought together
in these works, which still declare their original
lives. What was dead is resurrected, what is some-
times declared repulsive is also seen as attractive.
There is a wonderful ambivalence that permeates the
works in Dead or Alive. Our reactions to dead things that
miraculously “come back to life,” was probably best described
by Sigmund Freud as the “uncanny,” an uncertainty as to
whether or not something is animate or inanimate. These
are works that engage us on many levels, from the visceral to
the spiritual. While reminding us of the transitoriness of life,
they are also eloquent testaments to the perpetual renewal and
rebirth that give our lives meaning and pleasure.

Among the more than 30 international artists featured in the
current special exhibition Dead or Alive is Fabián Peña, who was
born in Havana, Cuba in 1976 and today resides in Miami, Florida.
He received a traditional art education at the National Academy
of Fine Arts and the Superior Institute of Arts in Havana, but his
work today is far from traditional in both its techniques and materi-
als. Peña’s medium of choice is insects—specifically cockroaches—
hence his inclusion in Dead or Alive, in which artists bring new life
to things that were once alive.
Among the artist’s provocative and surprising works are skulls,
hand and foot bones, and a human heart, all carefully delineated
using hundreds of cockroach wings. He has also created a hanging
flag from thousands of individual fly wings, and gossamer nets from
cockroach legs. Peña has said, “I have been using various organic
matters in my work during the last decade. Some of these materials
are inevitably omnipresent in our lives, such as common houseflies
and cockroaches. They evoke images of both death and resurrec-
tion.” Dead or Alive, which was organized by MAD, will certainly
intrigue and delight audiences, who will never look at a cockroach
again in the same way.

Our Open Studios give our visitors a truly behind-the scenes view
into the making of art. In three light-filled, flexible studios on the
Museum’s education floor, approximately thirty artists each year
each work one day a week. Resident artists range from established
to emerging talents, demonstrating techniques in a wide variety of
media. In the artists’ hands these materials are interpreted in an
innovative way, creating unique works that are displayed on the 6th
floor. The ability to observe and ask questions about the materials
and artistic process is as important as the chance to see the finished
objects in the galleries. Via the Open Studios, visitors connect prac-
tice to finished product and learn that museum-going can be a
participatory process. For the artists the environment is stimulating
and receiving feedback from the public is a unique experience.
For artist Lacey Jane Roberts it was “a rare gift to receive steady
critique from such a diverse set of perspectives.” For more on the

In the summer of 2009, the Museum inaugurated an exciting new
paid internship program for New York City public high school stu-
dents, supported by a gift from Cathy Seligman and Bonnie Eletz.
The program is targeted to students in underserved communities
in the five boroughs and exposes students to career opportunities
in the not-for-profit visual arts. In a highly competitive process, six
interns out of 300 applicants were chosen to work together with the
museum staff for six weeks. Weekly brown bag lunches with MAD
staff members and field trips to cultural organizations around the
city helped round out the experience. Working with every depart-
ment at the museum, the students contributed to projects including
a web-based research project for upcoming exhibitions, submitted
content for the MAD blog, and assisted artists in the in the Open
Studio program. The internship concluded with the participants
curating their own exhibition, Behind the Dish, which displayed
ceramic vessels created to hold a cultural dish that had special
meaning to them. The interns, family, and friends gathered in a cul-
minating evening reception when each student brought a prepared
traditional meal to be shared.
A parting note from one of the students best describes the impact
of the experience the program provided. “I now know what it takes
to keep an amazing nonprofit organization such as this one up
and running. This opportunity has encouraged me to become more
ambitious and to really persevere in what I love. Teenagers can
really benefit from this program just like I did.” For more on the
ArtsLife program visit www.madblog.org.
MAD’s new initiative, MAD Saturday: Family Day, took off in full
swing just after the New Year. The atmosphere was alive with
excitement as children and adults took part in museum activities
in the galleries, Open Studios, theatre, and workshop areas. Sixty-
four families spent the day enjoying interpretive activities designed
especially for youngsters, all centered on the exhibition Slash: Paper
Under the Knife. The Open Studios and workshops featured artists
and projects that engaged visitors in the act of making cut paper
pop ups, hand-made books, theatre sets, silhouettes, crowns, head-
dresses, and jewelry. Families participated in interactive tours held
in the galleries, watched five cut-paper animation films in the the-
ater, and engaged in conversation with invited film directors and
crew members to discuss their artistic practice and answer questions.

The lighting is designed by San Francisco-based
architect Johanna Grawunder, known for her
distinctly modern and innovative style. The Cherry
Blossom chandeliers, a mobile-like installation of
lucite panels, hang from the ceiling alongside
Tangerines, a series of suspended orange lucite
boxes, installed along the windowed perimeter.
London-based architect Philip Michael Wolfson
created sculptural steel tables, including a 15-foot
communal table bisected by a 6-foot “sound wave.”
Upholstered pieces are designed by modernist master
Vladimir Kagan and a new video art piece entitled
Orbit 2, created by artist Jennifer Steinkamp, is
displayed on a 103” plasma screen. The project
architect is Schefer Design, LLC.
When it comes to the dining experience, Chef Matthew
Koffman takes the reins in the kitchen, creating contem-
porary American fare with Mediterranean influences.
Specialties include tagliatelle with lobster; cherry
tomatoes, corn, and purple basil; seared diver scallops
over cauliflower-apple puree; and bombolini, cinnamon-
dusted ricotta fritter, with salted caramel dipping
sauce, for dessert.
ROBERT is open from 11:30 am to 12 am for lunch, afternoon
cocktails or coffee, dinner, and after theater. The restaurant

ROBERT, the new design restaurant located on the 9th floor of the Museum,
opened in December 2009 to great acclaim. In keeping with the Museum’s
mission of celebrating art, craft, and design and the ways in which artists and
designers transform materials through various processes, ROBERT has been
conceived as a specially commissioned collection of contemporary art and
design. The entire project was curated by Dr. Brian Saltzman, one of the
restaurant’s partners and a passionate art collector.
