DEC. 2017 טבת תשעח -כסלו

In this past month, we had a wonderful Scholar in Residence Shabbaton, with Rabbi Hayyim Angel. On Motzei Shabbat, he spoke about biblical criticism and the Academic approach to the study of Tanach. The session was more of a “Question-Answer” than a lecture. There was a lot to learn from his answers; there was also a great deal to learn from the questions. Some of questions related to the Torah being an anchor of our creed; is faith challenged by biblical criticism? Others to how we relate to the classic Mefarshim - Jewish Commentaries of the Torah, particularly the commentary of Rashi.

Rabbi Angel reiterated that the academic approach to study is quite

separate from the religious approach. In what Rabbi Angel described as “The Academy,” he explained, Rashi is viewed as an early commentary on the Torah, drawing on Midrash to illuminate the text. On the other hand, in the Yeshiva, Rashi is viewed as the primary teacher, giving the authentic reading according to our tradition.

The wonderful discussion triggered me to think about Rashi’s central role

in traditional learning. Our Mefarshim, commentators, of course, command our

reverence. In the Academy, the reading of the text is an intellectual pursuit. Rashi

is considered as just another Rabbi whereas, in the Yeshiva, where Torah study is

also a religious pursuit, Rashi is viewed with great reverence. The foundations and

strength of our faith can be found in Chumash with Rashi. In 1996, when I was

preparing to teach Chumash in the North West Yeshiva High School in Seattle,

(where I taught for six years), I approached Rabbi Kupferman, the principal of

Michlalah, a Women’s College in Bayit VeGan, Jerusalem, and asked him what

should be included in an ideal Chumash class. Rabbi Kupferman was teaching

teachers how to teach, I assumed he would give me a good over view of the main

commentaries that should be studied in High School. To my surprise, Rabbi Kupferman told me that he himself only taught Chumash with Rashi to his students. He was of the opinion that the best way to teach Chumash was entirely with Rashi. He introduced me to an anthology of over fifty commentaries on the words of Rashi. I understood how profound and deep each word of Rashi is even if sometimes one can only scratch the surface of what and how he is getting to his conclusion. I must add that he did use other Mefarshim in their capacity to disagree with Rashi all the while maintaining the supremacy of Rashi.

It is, of course, important to note that sometimes stressing the primacy of

Rashi can downplay the importance of other Mefarshim such as Ibn Ezra and

Ramban. Within the yeshiva approach, a balance must be established. That said, the

mitzvah of “Shtaim mikra vechad targum” (Hebrew for twice text, once translation),

requires that when men read the Torah Parsha each week, each verse of the parsha

must be recited twice in the Hebrew and then once in the targum, the Aramaic

translation of a man named Onklus. The reason for reading the Aramaic is that the

rabbis of the Gemara deemed that Onklus, who was himself a convert to Judaism,

included in his translation the classic and fundamental, reading and understanding

of the text. The Shulchan Aruch rules (285:1) that, if one studied Rashi’s commentary

instead of reading the translation, that is considered as if they read that targum of

Onklus, indicating to us that Rashi’s commentary, too, is an essential and authentic

reading of the Torah. No other commentary on the Torah is viewed in the same

way.
