Motivation and Lifelong Learning at Post Oak School

by John Long

“Post Oak is the kind of school where we motivate each other to be self-motivated.” Post Oak alumna Jennie Kamin made that statement ten years ago as an 8th grade student while being interviewed for the film Doorway to Lifelong Learning, and it is more true than ever today.

In our contemporary world of “race to the top” and “no child left behind,” many critics say we have left all children behind; that high-stakes testing has gutted our schools. In response, for the past 15 years the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)* has examined students’ school ex-perience and the factors impacting motivation and lifelong learning.

In the spring of 2013, Post Oak’s first high school class participated in the High School Survey of Student En-gagement (HSSSE) along with 27,000 other high school students in private and public schools nationwide. Even compared to this self-selected group of schools that explicitly value student

John Long became head of school at Post Oak in 1995. His career as an educator began with the United States Peace Corps in Kabul, Afghanistan. In Montessori schools he worked first as a classroom assistant, and then as a lead teacher in Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School. He has served as head of two large Montessori schools, written for professional journals, spoken at national conferences and workshops, and writes a blog titled Education by Design.John graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in English Literature, earned an M.Ed. from Cleveland State University in curriculum and instruction, and received his AMI Elementary certification from the Washington Montessori Institute. He was a founding board member of the Montessori Administrators Association (MAA) and just completed service on the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) Board of Directors. He and his wife have two kind, thoughtful, and energetic adult sons. John is an avid bicycle rider and artist.

In the spring of 2013, more than 27,000 students completed the high school survey of student en-gagement from 25 states located in all regions of the United States. Participating schools ranged in student population from 35 to 2,352 students. Public schools comprise all respondents including charter, alternative and magnet schools. engagement, Post Oak High School students showed higher levels of engage-ment and demonstrated that their school is measurably different from other private and public schools. When compared to these other schools, Post Oak High School students describe significantly higher levels when asked to rate the following:

I feel supported by teachers.•

I feel supported by other students.•

Teachers engage me in classroom discussions.•

I can be creative in classroom assignments and projects.•

I am an important part of my community.•

School emphasis on understanding ideas and information.•

School emphasis on analyzing ideas in depth.•

School emphasis on using computers and technology.•

School emphasis on building positive relationships with students.•

School experience contributed to thinking critically.•

Asked or answered questions in class.•

Talked to a teacher about your class.•

Made a presentation in class.•

Completed a formal writing assignment.•

Received feedback from teachers.•

Worked with other students on a project.•

Connected ideas or concepts from one class with another.•

This is what we expect a Post Oak student to experience at all levels, from infant community to primary to elementary to middle school to high school: high levels of engagement with an emphasis on critical and analytical think-ing, active and creative work, understanding ideas and information, asking questions, connecting concepts, constructive feedback from teachers, collaboration with peers, positive and supportive relationships with classmates and teachers.

A high school freshmen, a student new to Post Oak said, “I’m working harder than I ever did in my old school, and enjoying it more.”

The high school start-up was our “shiny penny” last year. At the same time, Post Oak’s teacher training center, the Houston Montessori Institute (HMI), wel-comed its inaugural class of nineteen trainees. HMI attracted students from around the world and over three summers will prepare them to be Montessori primary teachers. The Institute confers a diploma

*What is “student engagement” and why does it matter? Students are engaged when they are involved in their work, persist despite challenges and obstacles, and take visible delight in accomplish-ing their work. Student engagement also refers to a “student’s willingness, need, desire and compulsion to participate in, and be successful in, the learning process promoting higher level thinking for enduring understanding.”

under the authority of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), and is also affiliated with Loyola University Maryland, which grants credits toward an M.Ed.

These two new programs came about after several years of preparatory work, and so a successful Year One for each of them was hard-earned and duly celebrated by the board of trustees, administration, faculty, and parents. Over the past five years we have also been working to accommodate the growth of our elementary and middle school programs. During that time frame we have added new classrooms for lower elementary and upper elementary, and last year’s class of 8th graders was the largest ever in the middle school. Now we need to consolidate that growth through construction, creating additional space on the main campus. Board and administration worked intensively with the architects and the contractor last year, and will continue to do so in the year ahead. Construction is planned to begin in June 2014. We have simultaneously launched the BIGwork Capital Campaign to fund the building renovations as well as to cover start-up costs for the high school and training center. The response from current and alumni parents has been generous, and we anticipate the successful conclusion of the campaign in the year ahead.

While these strategic initiatives have demanded much attention from the board of trustees and some key ad-ministrative staff, the core work of the school, the daily classroom work of students and teachers, has carried on with focused energy and singular purpose—which brings us back full circle to the question of student en-gagement and ultimately, to the impact of Montessori education. When tech entrepreneur Jeremy Allaire was asked by The New York Times about his most important leadership lessons, he said, “One of the most important influences early on was being educated in a Montessori setting. The Montessori ethos was very formative for me because it built into me a belief in self-direction, in independent thought, in peer collaboration, in responsibility.”

The Post Oak School gave me the education and learning skills that I use to this day, and that I have used throughout high school.

Tribute to Dr. Theodor Hellbrüggeby Catherine M. Nehring

It is with many thanks to NAMTA that Dr. Theodor Hellbrügge lived to see his life’s work on Montessori education for inclusion and Montessori-based special education finally introduced in the United States. On January 18, 2014, just days before his death, the Montessori-inclusion legacy of Dr. Hellbrügge was publicly showcased in Phoenix, Arizona, at the NAMTA conference Building the Inclusive Montessori Community by Professor Joachim Dattke.

Dr. Hellbrügge was one of the great innovators and pioneers of our time, thinking in revolutionary terms for his field—very much like Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Hellbrügge set the world standard on inclusive educa-tion almost a half century ago, he singularly invented the field of social pediatrics, he took developmental rehabilitation to new frontiers, he established Montessori medical pedagogy as an approved allied health service, much like physical or occupational therapy, in Germany. He was a leading pioneer in the new scientific field of chronopediatrics (study of biological rhythms during human development) and prehabilitation (risk reduction and prevention). Just as Dr. Montessori envisioned a new kind of teacher, a scientific pedagogue, Dr. Hellbrügge envisioned a new kind of doctor, a physician-scientist. Dr. Hellbrügge’s contribu-tions in social pediatrics, social pediatric developmental rehabilitation, and Montessori Medical Therapy have spread to twenty-three different countries during his lifetime.

Dr. Theodor Friedrich Hellbrügge October 23, 1919–January 21, 2014

Dr. Hellbrügge has an important place in Montessori history. One day, in carrying out his duties inspecting preschools for the German government, he happened to come across a Montessori Children’s House where he made an observation most unexpected: children with Down’s Syn-drome together with “normal” children. His life was changed forever, very much like Dr. Montes-sori’s life was changed forever after observing the children at the Rome asylum scurrying around after crumbs on the floor. He passionately dedicated himself, despite vigorous objections by both educational and medical establishments, to the creation of what is believed to be the first inclusion-by-design school in the world, which he called Aktion Sonnenschein (Project Sunshine;

Munich, Germany). Aktion Sonnenschein was an integrated approach to inclusive education and it recombined Montessori education with the work of Dr. Édouard Séguin using Dr. Montessori’s methods as principal inspiration and point of de-parture. Today, Aktion Sonnenschein is the world’s premier model of inclusion, where an inclusive Montessori preschool and elementary school is connected to a comprehensive children’s clinic (Kinder-zentrum) and to a children’s hospital. At this full-service inclusion school, the doctors and teachers and therapists and parents all work together in service of the special children there. The goal is optimiz-ing development through early identifica-tion, intervention, and social inclusion.

Enamored with Montessori education, Dr. Hellbrügge chose to partner with Mario Montessori, son of Maria Montessori. Dr. Hellbrügge worked closely with Mario in setting up Montessori teacher training for inclusive education. Dr. Hellbrügge even served as vice president of Asso-ciation Montessori International under President Mario Montessori. It is very apropos that Mario Montessori spent the last decades of his life working on projects to reconnect his mother’s life work in education back to the medical community to aid the special child. Mario not only worked closely with Dr. Hellbrügge in Munich, but also worked closely with Dr. William Argy (professor of medicine, Georgetown University) in Washing-ton, DC, in a scientific study of the rehabilitative potential of Montessori education for children with physical and mental disabilities. In a way, Mario brought his mother’s work in applying special educational methods to typical children full circle back to special children in the medi-cal arena.

Finally, it is a result of Dr. Hellbrügge’s insistence on social integration (the education of children with disabilities together with normal children) in combination with developmental rehabilitation (medical diagnosis and early intervention) that the full developmental power of the Montessori method is revealed. Through this Hellbrügge-Montessori partnership, the door was opened to a new understanding of human development and humanity. There remains a treasure here to explore to be used to further benefit special children, typical children, and inclusive society as a whole. “More than a hope, it is a promise” (Mario Montessori; January 28, 1971). Cycles in NatureIn July last year a group of 8 middle school students from Pacific Crest Montessori School in Seattle, WA set out on their bikes to ride 200 miles to the 2013 International Montessori Con-gress in Portland, OR. This was the start of something new and powerful with impact reaching far beyond a bike ride. The Portland congress was the first time ever that adolescents were invited—and given a voice—at a Montessori congress. The idea to bike there was inspired by

the first Cycles in Nature event held in May of 2013; students from Australia, Thailand, Mexico, the US and Canada spent a day on bicycles participating in a grassroots initiative to build a global ado-lescent Montessori network. But, most importantly, these students represent the beginning of a movement that empowers Montessori students to make the world a better place.

The students’ participation in the Congress was a testament that it’s time to embrace the Montessori youth community in a bigger way. And that’s what Cycles in Nature is all about.

It is more than a day of fresh air and exercise. With a dedicated local and global fundraising component, it gives students a way to feel relevant in the world. So, we are dedicating May 2014 to cycle together to:

Create a network of empowered Montessori youth,•

Give indivduals the opportunity to feel relevant and have global impact, and•

Support environmental sustainability and social justice through fundraising.•

The cycle ride will be a sponsored event, raising money per mile from family and friends, local businesses, grant organizations, and everybody in between. The funds will be split 50/50 between a local organization (of each school’s own choice) and a global initiative that supports social justice or environmental sustainability. This year’s global initiatives are Children’s Eternal Rain Forest Project (Montessori Institute for the Science of Peace) and the Article 15 Foundation, which supports youth in Senegal to find their way out of poverty through education and income generating activities.

Join us! You choose the day that works for your school, then through our website you’ll download all the resources you need to get started. On our blog students can publicize their event, put their route on the map, share stories and photos, and stay in touch with other schools all over the world.

The Montessori approach to reading follows the way in which the brain has naturally evolved to read. Furthermore, current research into best practice in teaching reading conÞrms that the 100-year-old Montessori approach has all the components that will not only help the child “learn to read” but will also interest him enough in reading that he will still want to “READ TO LEARN”.

In spite of this, many Montessori teachers seek resources outside of Montessori, mistakenly feeling that, somehow, it is not enough.

In this Course we will refocus ourselves on Montessori principles and look at the things that we need to do if we want to fulÞll Dr MontessoriÕs vision that children should become ÒtotalÓ readers - children who love reading because they can appreciate the totality of what is being expressed.

The Course will not just focus on what we can do in the ChildrenÕs House. It will also look at what preparation has to take place in the child under three and will take a peek into where the child will continue his exploration in the Elementary. Participants will leave with a plethora of ideas for creating new resources, all based on the Montessori approach of course!
