General Insurance Association of Japan

Background/Activities Prior to the present Association's establishment in 1946, its origin can be traced back to 1917, when the Joint Fire

Insurance Association of Japan was founded by domestic and foreign insurance companies then operating in Japan. In 1939 the Joint Association was reorganized as the Dai-Nippon Fire Insurance Association. In 1941 it was amalgamated with several marine insurance organizations, such as the Japan Marine Underwriters' Association and the Hull Insurers' Union, established in 1920 and 1927 respectively, into the former Marine and Fire Insurance Association of Japan consisting of only domestic companies as regular members. The following year, in 1942, its name and functions were changed to the Non-Life Insurance Control Association assisting the government in the control of the industry during a chaotic economic period. Shortly after the hostilities ended, in September 1945, however, this Control Association was dissolved The Marine and Fire Insurance Association of Japan was reestablished on April 1, 1946, by all the domestic non-life insurance companies. On May 1, 1948, it was reorganized as an incorporated body. On May 20, 2003, it changed its English name to the General Insurance Association of Japan and is currently composed of 23 member companies. The objective of the Association is to promote the sound development of the non-life insurance industry in Japan.

Chartered Life Underwriter Institute

Background/Activities The Institute administers and promotes the CLU designation. It also administers the Code of Professional Conduct

for all Advocis members, including CLU advisors. The Practice Standards committee of the Institute is responsible for the development of insurance practice standards. These standards set out the professional behavior that is expected of Advocis members when they deal with their clients on involving life, health and group insurance matters. A person holding the Chartered Life Underwriter designation is a specialist in life insurance and estate planning. The CLU advisor’s education is rooted in financial planning, as represented by the CFP™ designation. The CLU educational program consists of three specialized courses that provide additional learning in life insurance applications, insurance law and taxation, and applied estate planning. The content of these courses builds upon the concepts found in the courses leading to the CFP™ designation. Virtually every financial planning engagement involves a review of the client’s risk management strategies. An advisor earns the CFP™ designation to substantiate his/her expertise as a financial planner. It makes sense for CFP™ professionals to earn the CLU designation to symbolize their expertise in life insurance and estate planning.

The Slovenian Insurance Association

Background/Activities The Slovenian Insurance Association (formerly the Slovenian Insurance Bureau) is the commercial interest

association of Slovenian insurance companies. It was founded in 1992. The Association's activities and basic goals are set out in its Statutes. Membership of the Association is open to insurance companies involved in contract insurance which are registered in the Republic of Slovenia. At present, the tasks are carried out by a 12-member professional service on the basis of resolutions of standing committees, committees and divisions and bodies of the Association, such as the assembly, council and the director. One of the most important tasks of the SIA is the fulfillment of obligations from international treaties and agreements concerning insurance issues not within state competence. One example is the Uniform Agreement between Bureaux, which concerns the so-called green card - an international document on the insurance of motor vehicles against liability for damages caused to third parties in domestic and foreign traffic. The duties deriving from this agreement are carried out by the Green Card Bureau, which is an independent organizational unit of the Association with its own management body, professional service and head of the professional service.

European Conference of the National Institutes for Professional Insurance Education

Background/Activities The aim of the European Conference is to enable those organizations who are responsible for vocational

education and training in insurance in their countries to share their experiences at an international level. It works towards a greater homogeneity in both their professional education and training programs and final examinations in the light of the fact that insurance is an international business. The national institutes for professional insurance education participating in the conference must provide educational activities for the whole country and be fully representative of insurance education in their country. If there is more than one institute in any one country which fulfils these demands, then that country may be represented by more than one organization Requests for participation should be directed to the head office of the institute in the country organizing the conference for that particular year. The preparatory committee will make final decisions on which organizations will be invited. Only representatives who occupy a senior position within their organization can represent their organization. The number of representatives will be limited to four per country. An ordinary conference will take place annually. The location of the conference will be determined on the basis of rotation. The organizer of the conference will, therefore, change each year.
