top place and something tells inc, they will get there .

If Melbourne High are going towin one it will be today on thesmall ground which will not suitCaulfield .

Butcher will be bottled up al,though it is hard to imagine Caul .field's strong flankers being dE,prived of enough chances to en-sure a boilover. Strength will winthrough (although not classically)for Caulfield .

B GRADE SELECTIONSSelections - Old Scotch, St _

Kilda CBOC, Marcellin, Collegian sCaulfield Grammar. - JOH&BYRNE .

C SECTIONAfter advising top sides not to

be complacent and reading NormNugent's challenge, this tippingbusiness requires more concentra•tion and homework.

Old Haileybury did the rightthing for me last week in knockingoff Old Melburn ians . A big crowclwitnessed a good game only mar-red by the inaccuracy of bothsides .

The scores looked like the resultsof their recent games in reverse.

Old Haileybury have shown thei rsupremacy and now face a chal-lenge of being a "champion" team .Today they meet Hampton Roversat Hampton and I am calling themto remain undefeated .

Old Melburnians now have Park-side breathing down their necksand after a "hot roast" from TonyAnderson, I expect their forwardsto kick straight at the expense ofOld Ivanhoe.

Fawkner, still in the running forthe four, should pick up a handyfour points against Power House.

After kicking the s-,veep lastweek Parkside improved their per-centage and will keep the gameflowing again today with a homewin over U .H .S .O .B .

Each week produces a gamewith a big question mark - andthis week it is Kew or Alphington.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 3, 1976

,,ie ;ther side has performed very~; ell and the thought of relegation„•i11 bring the best out of each sidei n a tough struggle.

I'm relying on some of the "old1ea (Is" at Kew to get moving onlietr own ground and lift them to a

John Houghton in the 36 playersprior to final selection of theCarnival side.

Best of luck fellas and I hope,,,)u make the trip .

Today's Selections - Old Haaley-hury, Kew, Fawkner, Parkside, Old,11 elburnians. - ALEX JOHNSON .

D SECTIONAlex Johnson was born lucky,

John Byrne is a member of theCollegians club and Assumptionlet me down again . I can't take atrick!

They tell me Old Xavs were 9,, oals behind at some stage but stillcanie back for a convincing win.

Brosnan (8 goals) was on targetbut many of his team mates wereastray in a run of 18 minor scores .

Don't ask me why but I feelOld Camberwell will jump aheadof you on the ladder by winningtoday .

It will be close but while Xavsare returning to something liketheir early season form, Old Cam-berwell have certainly loomed asa definite final four prospect .

Brunswick and Old Brightonpresents a poser . Brunswick's tre-mendous accuracy (14-5) kept themin the game last week . They'll needto do likewise again today butdespite the home ground advant-age will not beat Old Brighton whodid reasonably against the trumps,AJAX, last week .

AJAX are not a one-man teamand will be far too polished forState Bank who will be lookingfor an upset win to keep alive anyslight chance of playing in thefinals .

Assumption - I can't understandyou and perhaps there are somepeople out your way in a similarpredicament.

The way you played last weekwould indicate that poor old Na-tional Bank could steal the showtoday .

I'll give you another chance to-day Assumption - don't let medown !

Perhaps Mick O'Donnell can getyou up with some goal-kickingreminescent of two weeks ago .

Oh for a draw like Mr. John-son's! Here's another tough one .Who really could tip the winnerof the Elsternwick-Old Geelonggame?

Because we are in the middle ofthe skiing season, I can't see OldGeelong winning even at home .

Elsternwick will have boostedtheir confidence immensely afterlast weeks goal-kicking spree andI expect them to win and keep inthe race for the four.

Selections - Assumption, OldBrighton, Elsternwick, AJAX, OldCamberwe ll . - JIM FIDGE.

E SECTIONInstead of complaining about the

reversal of form from CommonBank, they have my congratula-tions and promise that they cannotbe written off.

Only two games out of the fournow but with all the best wishesin the world I can't pick themagainst St . Kevin's.

LaTrobe Blacks should be toogood for St . Pat's who are in thehorrors at the moment . Playing atLaTrobe won't help the "Paddies",so it's the home team to win.

ANZ Bank kicked themselvesout of last week's game and willneed to get the ball up to TrevorDancer often enough to clinch thegame against Monash Whites whoare ahead of Common Bank by ahair's breadth.

A.M .P. Society and North Bruns-wick is a toss-up on preformances,

Page 8

so home ground should bring homethe bacon . A.M.P. to win acloseone.

The curly one has been left tc,the last . Heatherton and Old IVIen .tone have had their ins and outs, both need to win to stay in thefour and Heatherton are playiAgat home.

I think Old Mentone are goodenough to overcome this handicapand will win by a whisker.

Selections - St. Kevin's La-Trobe Blacks, ANZ Bank, ,M.P.Society, Old Mentonians - SYDWHITFIELD.

F SECTIONAll the selected teams came

home last week to give me fivewins. Most tipsters had a gwweek last Saturday and even SYDWHITFIELD managed three wins .

This week I cannot go past 'tVestBrunswick to dish out anotherhammering to, LaTrobe Universit5,Reds .

Although Thornbury are playingat home they haven't the big gunsto down St. Bed'e's.

Beverley Hills seem to be settl-ing down a bit and should have nodifficulties in downing a disappoint-ing Bulleen-Templestowe .

Footscray Tech, have swing intotop gear and at home at Seddonthey will be too strong and fastfor University Reds . (It may bebetter if Uni. Reds change downthe hill at the bowling green .)

I'm giving Glenroy a bit of abreak this week by tipping Bulleen-United in a close game .

Selections - West Brunswick,St . Bede's, Beverley Hills, Foots-cray I.T., Bulleen United - KEITHFINDLAY .

JUNIOR SECTION 1Congratulations to ALEX JOHN-

SON on selecting five winners forthe third consecutive week.

Junior Section 1 is now startin gto sort itself out, so your scribemay still have some chance of

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY 3, 1976

e top half of thef nis in Tally".,Tipsters

' old Scotch play North Old Boy s,nd the only thing they can hopefor is that North will take the, arne too easily . However, this is,,nlikely and North should continuetheir unbeaten run .

The game at Ivanhoe should re-Sult in the premiership list beingSplit into two halves. Ivanhoeshould be too strong for Univer-Sfty Blacks and they will take full

vantage of playing at home.Vevertheless, the Blacks last weekproved they can concentrate atfootball even though the opposi-tion may resort to unfair tactics .

The match of the day will bebetween Ormond and Monash. Or-mond are one-and-a-half games pluspercentage outside the four andneed to win to keep alive theirchances of playing in the finals .monash will be determined to keepsecond place, but they will findOrmond's home ground too muchco overcome.

Both Hampton Rovers and PowerHouse will be trying to avoid re-legation . Hampton have shown verylittle form so far, while PowerHouse have been patchy. Withfingers crossed, I select PowerHouse.

Coburg are also struggling toavoid relegation, but this will notbe enough incentive to beat Uni-versity Blues, who will be keento consolidate their position in thefour. I

Selections - North Old Boys,!vanhoe, Ormond, Power House,University Blues - PETERNATHAN.

JUNIOR SECTION 2Reservoir Old Boys are at home

o West Brunswick in what pro-,iises to be a close game. As thecams appear evenly matched it i sficult to select the winner. How-

:ver I give the nod to the `Magpies''rom. West Brunswick because they_ave the greater incentive .

Thomastown will welcome Gee-long. There is no way I can selectGeelong on form. I believe Thomas-town can kick the sweep again.

Caulfield Grammarians will be outto atone for last week's blemishwhen they play Kew. Caulfield'sstrength and experience will besufficient to insure another victory.

Out at Buckley Street, the tradi-tional rivals St . Bernard's and OldParadians meet in a vital game forboth sides . Rex Doran and PeterPeyton have been burning the mid-night oil to analyse each team'sstrength. I select Old Paradiansbecause of their fine form over thepast few weeks .

Alphington meet De La Salle inwhat should be a close encounter .I favour De La Salle to be vic-torious because of their greatersteadiness . However I would notbe surprised if the Alphington boystake the points .

Selections - West Brunswick,Thomastown, Caulfield Grammar,Old Paradians, De La Salle. --NORM NUGENT.

Today St. Kevin's meet Com-monwealth Bank and consequentlyit seems an appropriate occasionto trace the career of one of the"grand old men" of Amateur Foot-ball, Les Radford, who in 15 sea-sons in the V.A.F.A. has playedsome 258 games with these twoclubs .

Les started with the Bank'sJuniors in 1962 and in 1963 wasCaptain and Runner-up Best andFairest . In 10 years with theSeniors, Les played two years in"A" Section, five years in "B"two in "C " ', and one in "D".

He was club Best and Fairest in1970, Runner-up in "D" Sectio nBest and Fairest in 1973 and wasnominated for interstate selectionin 1968 and 1970 . In total he play-ed 218 games with the Bankers(184 Senior, 2 Reserves, 32 Junior) .

ing years, marked by a shortage ofplayers and the sort of generalapathy which frequently besets aclub which has stayed long andunsuccessfully in the one Section .

It is enormously to Les' creditthat, having decided not to con-tinue as Coach he elected to stayon as a player under Alan Olle.He was unanimously elected Cap-tain and has played a large part inSt . Kev's current revival playing inthe ruck and on the forward lineand constantly encouraging anddirecting the play of his youngside .

Keen supporter Kath is difficultto recognise today as the motherwho discouraged her schoolboyson from playing football at St .Thomas, Clifton Hill . Les is marriedto Margaret and is the father ofthree young children .

MPIRE'S CORNEABy Kevin McKay

LAWS OF THE GAMEHOLDING THE BALL -

HOLDING THE MANIf this rule is fully understood by

coaches and players it will be realizedthat it is really the easiest of rules toapply.

The spirit of this law is to keep theball in motion .

1 . A player in possession of the ball, when held by an opponent firmlyenough to stop him or retard his progressshould be given a reasonable chance ofdisposing , of it, either by kicking orhandballing, otherwise a free kick shallbe awarded to his opponent for holdingthe ball.

2 . A player who lies on or over theball is deemed to be in possession of it .

3 . A player not in possession of theball, when held by an opponent, shallbe awarded a free kick - for holdingthe man .

4 . If a player is in the act of kickin gor handballing and he is swung offbalance, and his foot or hand does notconnect with the ball - play on .

5 . If a player is bumped and the ballfalls from his hands - play on .

6 . When a player is knocked on thearm or elbow, causing him to drop theball - play on .

7 . When a player has his arms pinnedto his sides, causing him to drop theball - play on .

8. A player pulled by one arm orswung and the ball falls from his hand- play on .

9 . When a player has the ball held tohis body by another player - ball up .

The spirit of this law is to keep theball in motion.

DO YOU KNOW?That Geelong (V.F .L.) club did not

win a match at South Melbourne from1905 to 1927 .

Footscray had never beaten Coiling-wood until they won at Footscray in1933 .

lo ~nehistfirKilyearlasean umpire withV .F.L . made the following statementthe V.F.L . Record last week - Iece it is worth repeating -

••tt'hen you are a player and hit by an,pponent or insulted, you almost always,„[inctively lash out, but as an um-;,ire you just have to keep your self-nntroi.

• :~s for fitness, I am now far, farer than any time I played football, and

only umpired Federal and Diamondey Seconds and Thirds so far .

cannot recommend umpiring too, ighly to the young player who is injury

or who isn't consistently winningplnee in the team .

-,The companionship between umpires ismething that has to be experienced to

believed ." (End of Statement . )

These comments are from a man whoplayed the top brand of football in

pastralia .

Surely with all our clubs in the,%mateur Football Association there must1,0 some "injury prone" young men, ranting to stay in the sport - think,,bout it for next season .

All umpires join with me in congratu-lacing Peter O'Donohue on his appoint-ment as coach of the Carnival team and, Iso to all of the players selected torepresent Victoria in Adelaide .

We wish them complete success in theCarnival .

Former Reservoir Old Boys player,i.eVin Grose was seen in a new roleIt couple of weeks ago - as field umpireit a Schoolboys match, didn't get acry good report from the players, the

boys reckon he was too technical?

The ball officially approved for use ®

all V.F.L. matches since 1897.

ISHERRINe name our game grew up with !

Today Peter Rubira in his third yearwith Monash Whites plays his 50th con-secutive game . Peter, who is currentlySecretary of the club, and Vice-Captainof .the Reserves, has played most of hisgames in the Reserves . It is indicative ofhis dedication to the club that despitegout, car accidents and nagging anklecomplaints, Peter has managed to reachthe milestone of fifty games withoutmissing any in the last two-and-a-half-years . Fifty games is an achievement initself, but to play fifty consecutivegames is quite a rare feat.

However, like all good things, Peterhas found that his run of consecutivegames has had to come to an end. It iswith deep regret that, due to pressuresof final year studies, he has to announcehis temporary retirement . It is hoped thathe will be able to come back soon andplay his next fifty games consecutivelyalso . All at Monash congratulate Peterand wish him well for the future . P .S .Peter wishes it to be known that there isno truth to the rumour that he is retiringbecause of his gout .

From a champion player in the 1950's to a top administraLor inChairman Of th,

since 1971 .Manson started with Old Scotch in 1948 at the age of L~, an d

continued playing with the club until the end of the 1963 season ._ . _--- --:, ,

He first gained a place in theVictorian team for the 1951 Car-nival in Melbourne, but was in-jured on the Saturday prior to thecommencement of the Carnivaland was forced to withdraw fromthe side.

So he made his Victorian debutagainst South Australia at Ade-laide, in 1952, when he won theaward for Best Player in the Vic-torian side .

Manson went to Adelaide thefollowing year as a member of theVictorian Carnival team, and in 1954he again had to withdraw from theState side on account of injury. He missed selection in 1955 butrejoined the Victorian team for theHobart Carnival in 1956.

Carnivals seemed to be hisspecialty for his next (and last) for missing that Carnival - Man-appearance in a Victorian sweater son won the A Section Best andwas at the 1959 Perth Carnival, Fairest award that year.when he was almost 30 years of He also won Old Scotch Best and

He was Old Scotch Delegate to

the V.A .F .A. from 1949 to 1971 andwas elected to the Umpire Comr❑, ittee in 1965. He remained amember of this Committee until

1973 .

In 1963 he was appointed to theSelection Committee and has beenchairman since 1967 .

Manson was elected a memberof the Executive Committee in1965, and was appointed Chairmanin 1971, the same year in whichhe was elected a Vdce-President ofthe V.A.F.A .

He is also a member of theSports Council of Victoria.

So Manson Russel has givennearly 30 years service to theV.A.F.A., like Johnny Walker is"still going strong", and there's noreason to believe that he won'tcontinue to do so for many yearsto come .

BLUES VETERANFINALLY MADE THE BIG "V "

After playing with University Blues since 1968, Tim Standish

was in the Victorian squad this

finally made the Victorian side last season.

Tim, one of the Blues'- veterans with nearly 150 games to his

credit, at 26 years of age showed that experience can be an important

facet in our game.

Standing 6' 41" and tipping the self available for the trip and had

BEHIND THE SCENrisMany years ago, in the late 1950's we

published a series of articles entitled"THE BACK-ROOM BOYS" -- telling ourreaders of the football history of n7em-bers of the Executive Committee andother prominent officials of the V .A .F.A .

We believe that very, very few (ifany) of the present day players wouldhave read any of these articles, and Inany case there have been a number ofnew faces at the Executive table sincethose days, so we propose to tell youabout the present officials .

We started with Secretary JACK FUI,.LERTON last week . Today we introducethe Chairman of the Executive Committee,MANSON RUSSEL, who has been con-nected with Amateur football, as playerand administrator, since 1948 .
