A few weeks ago I handed down my second Budget as Treasurer. In this Budget I have sought to support and encourage all AustraIians by doing four things: 1. Grow our economy to secure more and better paid jobs 2. Guarantee the essential services that Australians rely on, in particular our security, health and education 3. Put downward pressure on rising costs of living in areas such as housing and electricity prices, and 4. Ensure the Government lives within its means, by bringing the Budget back into balance The Budget contains record support for all schools and hospitals, including $3.1 million extra for schools in Cook next year. For more than 18,830 local small businesses in Cook, we are extending the instant asset write off scheme. And our ten year national infrastructure plan, which includes building the Western Sydney Airport, will help drive growth and jobs. We are also bringing the Budget back into balance. Real growth in expenditure at just 2% per year is at the lowest level of any Government in the past fifty years. We have cut the growth in our debt from over two thirds per year under Labor, to less than ten per cent. And for the first time in a decade, from 2018-19, in just over a year, we will no longer be borrowing money to pay for everyday expenses like welfare. We are a strong and fortunate community, built on strong values of family, self reliance, personal responsibility, hard work and respect for others and for those less fortunate than ourselves. These are the same values that I have sought to bring to this year’s Budget. regards Scott WELCOME Scott Morrison MP Federal Member for Cook The Hon. OUT AND ABOUT

ScottMorrisonMP The Hon.

Visiting businesses in my electorate is something I am passionate about. Hearing their concerns, sharing their success or perils helps me perform better in my role as Treasurer. Thank you Displaywise and Aerofloat for inviting me to your work place.

My first community consult for the year was held in March at Ramsgate (Foodies) Markets. I was overwhelmed with the response from local constituents. I received a lot of great insight into my new part of the electorate. I look forward to holding more of these consults in the future.

I held my first Easter Colouring Competition for primary school kids. The entries were outstanding and it was extremely hard to pick a winner. Thank you to all the schools who participated and a big congratulations to the winners who received a book voucher from Bloomin’ Books in their Easter Hamper.TAREN POINT PUBLIC SCHOOL – ZOE DENDRINOS

ANzAC DAy 2017 CENTENARy OF ANzAC

100 YEArs oF AnzAcIn 2015 we celebrated 100 years since the Gallipoli landing. There were many commemorations, including the biggest ever for the cronulla dawn service.

For this event one commemorative gesture was from local residents. Crocheting over 400 red poppies representing each of the soldiers who served from the local area. These poppies were laid by school children at the base of a symbolic cross during the service held in Cronulla park. Each poppy stem had the soldiers name, rank and where they served.

At the conclusion of the service these poppies were collected and stored in my office.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day I was honoured to give these poppies back to the community in a beautiful presentation frame, including all the names of the soldiers that served.

In a small ceremony I was proud to present these to Cronulla, Miranda, Caringbah and Ramsgate RSL Branches. Entrusting them to take care of these symbolic poppies for future generations to reflect upon. As a symbol of the service and sacrifice of those who came from the local area in which we live today.

ANZAC BISCUITSIngredients• 1 cup each of plain our, sugar,

rolled oats and coconut • 4 ounces butter (115g)• 1 tablespoon treacle (golden syrup) • 2 tablespoons boiling water (add a

little more water if mixture is too dry)• 1 teaspoon bi-carbonate soda

Method1. Grease tray and pre-heat oven to 180°C.2. Combine dry ingredients.3. Melt together butter and golden syrup.

Combine water and bi-carbonate soda – add to butter mixture.

4. Mix butter mixture and dry ingredients.5. Drop teaspoons of mixture onto tray. 6. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until golden.

Allow to cool on tray for a few minutes before transferring to cooling racks.

* Makes approximately 35 biscuits(From an original recipe provided by Mr Bob Lawson,

an ANZAC present at the Gallipoli landing.)

e origin of the ANZAC biscuitArmy biscuits, known as Anzac wafers or tiles, were a hard biscuit eaten by soldiers as a bread substitute. They were often ground up and eaten as porridge.

The Anzac biscuit we are familiar with today was developed by the wives and girlfriends of our soldiers. A sweet biscuit made of rolled oats and bound with golden syrup or treacle (eggs were scarce during the war) were sent to the frontline by ships of the Merchant Navy.

For over a century, Australia’s Defence personnel have contributed to every major conict, ghting for our freedoms and values. From the Boer War, to our troops still serving around the world, Australian servicemen and women have become world renowned for their bravery, humanity, sacrice and skill. In 2017, we continue to mark the century of service and sacrice of the First World War. In particular, The Third Battle of Ypres, which was the major Flanders oensive of 1917. Australian Divisions participated in the battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle and the First Battle of Passchendaele. Over 38,000 Australian casualties were incurred in this oensive. We also remember the Charge of the Light Horse at Beersheba a century ago - a strategic victory that has become the stu of legend as a symbol of Aussie bravery and skill in battle.

This year also commemorates the 75th anniversary of some major events in the Second World War. We must never forget the tragic loss of life during the bombing of Darwin and the fall of Singapore and Malaya, but also the decisive contribution of our troops to the battle of the Coral Sea, Milne Bay, Midway, Kokoda, Buna and Gona.

In 2009 I had the privilege to lead a group of young people from our local surf clubs in the rst of our Mateship Treks along the Kokoda trail. Together we saw the places where the historic battles along the trail were fought, remembered the sacrice of those who served and paid our tribute.

Trekking Kokoda has become a rite of passage now for many Australians seeking to understand and honour those who have given us the Australia we share today.

All those who have trekked will know the breathtaking memorial at Isurava where four pillars stand overlooking the plains below. On those four pillars are inscribed the words courage, mateship, endurance and sacrice. It is a tting testimony to both the character and achievements of all those who have served in our name.

This ANZAC Day I encourage you and your family to attend one of the ve local Dawn Services being held across the St George and Sutherland Shire area to commemorate the service and sacrice of all Australians who have served and continue to serve our country with distinction and honour.

THE COALITION GOVERNMENT BUDGET 2017 budget.l iberal.org.au

This Budget is the next stage in the Coalition Government’s economic plan, building on commitments from the 2016-17 Budget and the 2016 election.

A generation of Australians has grown up without ever having known a recession, with the nation now in its 26th consecutive year of economic growth.

In recent years the growth has been hard won and not all Australians have shared in the growth. Many others remain frustrated. Wage growth has been slow, additional hours have been hard to come by, and small business owners have gone without to keep their businesses open and their employees in jobs.

This is putting increased pressure on Australians and their families but there are clear signs that the economy is moving towards better days.

This Budget is about making those right choices, to secure the better days ahead.

And the choices we have made are clear.

TRIBUTE TO KARA

CRONULLA SURF LIFE SAvINg CLUB

Five years ago I spoke in Parliament to bring awareness to the plight of those suffering from Mitochondrial disease, a disease affecting 1 in 200 Australians. It is commonly misdiagnosed and has no cure.Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disorder robbing the body of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure. It is a life-threatening disease, and young Kara Crawley from Yowie Bay in my electorate was diagnosed with this disease at the age of eight after suffering a stroke. On the 26th of March 2017, young Kara passed away, only three weeks after celebrating her 18th birthday. This is a terrible and horrible loss for her parents, Craig and Karen, her sister, Samantha, and her brother, Braden. It is a tragic loss for us all.

Kara touched our lives. She was a beautiful young woman. She knew what all of us would hope to know, and that is to love and be loved, which she did so in abundance. She was extremely bright. She loved playing the flute. She was at the top of her class. She loved playing with her friends and her brother and her sister. She wanted to study medicine at university and become a doctor just like her mum.

Kara suffered the symptoms of “mito” for many years prior to her formal diagnosis, which came about through the determination of her mother, Dr Karen Crawley, a general practitioner and extraordinary individual. It was my privilege, a few years ago, to present Karen with our Cook Community Medal for her tremendous service to our community and to the community more broadly as part of the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (AMDF), of which she has been a volunteer and leader, manning their helpline, holding fund raising events and, in so many ways, supporting many other families who are suffering the same plight.

I know Karen and Craig would want us to remember Kara but, at the same time, remember all the families who suffer with this terribly debilitating disease. God bless young Kara. God bless her family. Our prayers are with them and with her brother and sister during this difficult time.

Gymea Community Preschool upgraded their kitchen with the grant they received.

For 109 seasons, since January 1908 Cronulla SLSC has cared for and protected the people who use the beach and its surrounds. Its iconic building is synonymous with the Shire landscape and is now 76 years old.

The core building is of major heritage significance which must be preserved or even restored to their earlier condition. The building has been added to progressively over four major works programs creating many issues including non-compliance with OH&S and limited or non-existent disabled access to the club.

I was therefore pleased to attend Cronulla SLSC’s season end lunch and deliver some important news. The Government will provide $3 million to upgrade the heritage listed building. A redevelopment project essential to modernise the Club, make it more efficient to use, improve the facilities for members, make it comply

with current building and safety standards and ensure it will meet the community needs into the future.

With nearly $3 million in funding from their own efforts, loans and Sutherland Shire Council, the Cronulla Board were still far short of their $6 million target.

I am extremely proud to deliver this funding to Cronulla SLSC. Together with Club President, Rob Short and the Cronulla Board, I want to ensure this redevelopment is done right. A club that our kids, grandkids and the community can use to its maximum potential for another 100 years.

If all goes according to plan the club would aim to see completion by end 2019.

After consultation with Bayside Council there are now plans in place for more signage, more consultation with business owners and weekly monitoring of construction progress. Whilst there have been varying reasons for the delay, no doubt extreme weather events during February and March had a major impact. The Council is confident that completion of works should be done by July. Discussions are being made to “re open” the strip attracting more residents and visitors to the site.
