Christian Sasse has seen his share of the world.

He has lived in such far-flung destinations as Sri Lanka, South Korea, Sweden and South Africa — and those are just the countries under ‘S’.

But since arriving in B.C. in 2011, Sasse has found his passion: eagle photography.

The White Rock resident already had a fascination with light, getting his PhD in optics, but in the eagle he found the perfect subject for his focus.

“The eagle fascinates me because of the many facets it has; and they’re all very powerful,” says Sasse. “I try to get close-ups, in flight, from above, below. As many looks as I can get.”

As it turns out, Sasse has quite the talent for getting the right look.

His blend of dedication and technique has garnered

over 20,000 likes for the photographer’s Facebook page, spawned a book: “White Rock Eagles: A Bald Eagle Family,” and seen his work featured both on the cover of Outdoor Photography Canada magazine and in an article within its pages.

This passion brought the photographer to the North Island this September as the shutterbug spent three days in Port Hardy getting up-close and personal with the raptor.

While here, Sasse began shooting video between stills, and last week he and partner Mark Horner released the inaugural episode of a planned series of short films under the banner of Eagle Nova Films.

“Port Hardy turned out to be a paradise for a photographer,” said Sasse. “It seemed perfect for the launch of EagleNova as I

believe that it deserves more attention. My approach is simple and down-to-earth and hopefully I have given Port Hardy the respect it deserves.”

The nine-and-a-half-minute video is a blend of nature documentary, photography workshop and Port Hardy travelogue. Besides his beloved eagles, Sasse’s film includes views of a fisherman in the Quatse River estuary, Blue Heron, Canada Geese, black bear and views of town.

“What I enjoy about Port Hardy is the real raw beauty, the nature and the way people are,” said Sasse in the first of the Outdoor Treasures offerings. “They’re very unpretentious and very natural.”

The September visit was his second visit to the North Island, and he was struck by the memory of people who had met him on his first trip and who

approached him to chat and get caught up.

“I was known by that time as ‘The Eagle Man’ with the big lens,” Sasse said with a laugh.

Looking for some good autumn reading? I recently came across a book called “Thinking About Hearing Aids?” It’s written by Peter Slobin, an audiologist from UBC, and I simply couldn’t put it down. OK, it’s not exactly Fifty Shades of Grey, but for anyone ready to pursue better hearing, it truly is a must read.

This pithy little paperback answers all

of your questions about hearing function, loss and correction. Just as important as the facts and figures, however, Slobin addresses some of the emotional issues surrounding hearing loss, such as why people avoid them and how getting hearing aids might

make you feel. “Always focus on

your goal of creating a better life,” writes Slobin. “At first when you wear hearing aids it may take a while to get used to the idea, but as you

become accustomed to them, you may find it becomes easier and easier, until the time

comes when hearing aids don’t hold the same emotional charge they used to—they just become part of your life.”

Having been in the industry more than 15 years, I know people have many questions along the way, but sometimes are afraid to ask or feel completely overwhelmed. It’s great to be able to offer my clients a resource that will answer those questions that arise in the middle of the night.

North Islander presented with forestry award

The Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF-IFC) announced its 2013 national award recipients at a gala banquet held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland this week.

Several hundred CIF-IFC members from across Canada were in attendance for the Institute’s 105th conference and annual general meeting. CIF-IFC President Michel Vallée presented the James M. Kitz Award to Mr. Jonathan Lok of Port McNeil, British Columbia.

The award was

created in memory of James Kitz - who was a member of both the Institute and of the College of Alberta Professional Foresters, and passed away at 36 years of age. This award recognizes individuals who make significant, unique and outstanding contributions in the field of forestry, early in their career.

Lok is a passionate and dedicated forest professional, former President of the Association of BC Forest Professionals - their first ever forest technician President; and the Institute’s incoming second Vice

President for 2013-14. Lok is well known for making efforts to collaborate with other professions and expand the sphere of influence of all resource management professions. He currently runs Strategic Forest Management Inc.

The anglers pay a registration fee and this year more than 660 � sh were brought in. The derby is attended by anglers from the mainland, the island and many locals.

Last week a steady � ow of shore � shermen were lining up the beaches in hopes of catching a Coho, wild Coho must be released and the area At Salmon Point can be congested with anglers on the weekend.

Crabbing can be very good in local areas when the salmon � shing is quiet.

The freshwater � shing can be very good at

the moment as the warm weather continues, Small pothole lakes can be fun if you can get off shore. The upper Campbell has produced some very nice trout in the past weeks.

A great source of � shing information can be obtained at the tackle shops in Campbell River and Courtenay. I was hearing an experienced angler say that the best oyster months are September through December.

If you are not an angler sometimes local commercial boats come in and sell � sh off the dock.
