International Assembly 2018

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Hi there! I’m Sherry Chamberlain, and I’ve just had the privilege of attending District Governor Training at the International Assembly that is held every year in San Diego California. Here the Rotary International President for 2018-2019, Barry Rassin from the Rotary Club of East Nassau in the Bahamas encouraged us to “Be the Inspiration”! With this in mind and the encouragement of recent flexibility in the new Rotary International bylaws, leaders from all over the world are sharing in the vision of new models for Rotary in the coming years… expanding on Club Diversity, and exploring New Ideas that help us to grow! Ideas that clearly reflect Rotary’s #1 Priority and Make Membership Matter!

Change Meeting

Venues and Times

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

If we were to switch up some of our meeting venues and times, we will include the members that we seem to lose because they cannot find the time during the day to attend our lunch or breakfast meetings. In our clubs we know of many Rotarians who give their time in our weekend volunteer efforts however we don’t see them during the week. It would be a shame to lose them if we didn’t change up our meeting times to accommodate the busy schedules of younger professionals. Having an after hours social or Rotary business mixer has proven successful in retention of these new younger members.

Involve New

Members

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Most members leave in the first one or two years because they are not engaged and if they feel they have nothing to offer, or have not gotten involved in a project or event, they easily slip away. We developed a plan to gather the newest members for that past year and let them develop a project plus raise the money for this project. The project is their choice with no rules put on by the executive or the club, it just has to follow Rotary's area of focus and guidelines. We as the club overseeing this, ask that they take 20% of funds raised goes back to the club for other projects and programs already in place.

Business Mixers

Bring a Guest/Client

Family’s and Kids

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

More and more business people are too busy for the daytime weekly meetings, as some meetings require 1.5 to 2 hr time commitment. Providing a business mixer atmosphere once a month or two, adds value to their membership enabling them business networking and a more relevant atmosphere. Rotary started with Paul Harris and his friends meeting together and helping each other with their business. WE encourage members to bring a guest, a client, their spouse or other family members – children come too. We have contests and award Rotarians bringing guests.

Satellite Clubs - Passport Clubs - Reach Out !

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

We are offering smaller struggling clubs other opportunities rather than simply closing their charter: A few of our clubs are below 15 even below 10 and they just don't have enough person power to run the club effectively. These members are passionate about their ongoing projects and work they do for their communities. By informing them of other alternatives like a satellite off of a close larger club, or change their club to a passport club, can keep them in the Rotary family. More and more our larger clubs are reaching out and visiting these clubs to offer a helping hand, and it takes the area governors to really encourage the unity and team building.

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Other large not for profit groups do a great job of engaging with corporations for fundraising like payroll deductions, promoting employees to join, and asking companies to support and sponsor. Rotary can do a better job in asking companies to support the clubs and Rotarians. We just need to go and ask and sit down with them and tell our Rotary story. Rotary offers leadership opportunities, public speaking and facilitation skills training, strategic planning and goal setting knowledge; something all companies would love to have their employees embark on... and it is all no charge to a company..... Now Let's hear from a millennial in our District who has a not-too-surprising first impression of Rotary!

So, as he said, that was Dominick Bonny, a millennial who is totally convinced that Rotary is a good thing, in spite of our odd traditions! His message was featured in the January 2018 edition of the Rotarian magazine. Now, what we want to do is to explore and build on some of the Club Diversity suggestions that Sherry gave us at the opening of this presentation!

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

My name is Peter Schultz. I am currently the District Governor Nominee for District 5060, and I would like to introduce a collection of modest steps that are leading to positive results. Some of these we have worked with for a few years, others we are just starting.

The Membership Diet

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

I’m calling this a “Membership Diet” because it reminds me of the kind of dieting approach that actually works! I expect many of you, like me, have heard from individuals that have made amazing growth happen in their clubs… in some cases more than doubling in a year! The fact is the skills, or circumstances are often not generally duplicatable and we are left wondering how we can make the same techniques work for us. I think that everything I am going to tell you can be done by any Club, in fact you are probably already doing some of this yourselves!

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Let’s start by considering how we are doing with membership. We will look at our District, and our Zone (which is representative of North America in general), relative to the Global performance. We will look at Gender, Age, and of course our numbers!

Here we see the district in BLUE, Zone 24 in GOLD, and the world in RED. Our District, as is typical through our zone (and indeed North America) is outpacing the world at bringing women into the clubs. Ethnic diversity is tougher to quantify with the data that we have available, but it is clear that this too could be improved through most districts.

Slide 16

Age

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Rotary everywhere is dominated by “older” members…..at least those over 50, and for the health of our organization we know that we need to appeal to a younger demographic. We must find ways to engage busy, young professionals so that they too can share in the rewards of Rotary!

We are proud in our District (CLICK) shown again in blue, of our small but steady growth over the last 5 years. (CLICK) At just under 3000 members District 5060 is the largest of the 36 districts in our zone pair 24-

32… in fact we are more than

50% larger than the average district size! Our growth has not kept pace with the global growth (driven notably by Asia and Africa), but we have done considerably better than the North American average.

Slide 22

Membership

DOES Matter !!!

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

So why would this be? Well I think it is due in large part to a suite of 7 relatively straightforward products or programs that I will summarize for you here. The first is a hands-on training seminar that we have named “Membership Matters!” The double entendre of the name is intentional… this is a 2-3 hour program based on the best materials, or “matters” we can find pertaining to membership, both attraction of new members and engagement of existing ones! And we do this, of course, because membership DOES matter! In fact, it is our District and Rotary International’s top priority! The program was first developed in Zone 25 who call their current version “Priority One”, and it is based on many of the findings of the professional analysis conducted for Rotary International several years ago by the brand-consulting firm siegel + gale.

Page 11: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

Slide 23

TITLE | 23Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

One of their most important conclusions is that people JOIN and STAY in Rotary NOT because of networking, not because of the great international work we are doing, not EVEN because we are going to eradicate polio!

Slide 24

TITLE | 24Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

People join AND stay because of the true and lasting friendships they develop with others that share their ideals and values, and because of the great work that Rotarians accomplish in their own home communities! If we want to attract new members to our clubs, whether young professionals or anybody else, then we need to first consider how to make Rotary engaging to all! The information and resources you need to learn about Membership Matters! are available from your Zone Membership Coordinators.

Slide 25

Practical Matters

The next product in our suite is called “Practical Matters”. This is a collection of fairly simple and effective practical ideas originally developed or collected by our District Membership Chair. All of Rob’s practical suggestions are simple enough that any Club can take advantage of them, and some were featured in the February

Page 12: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

2018 Rotarian Magazine, as illustrated here.

Slide 26

TITLE | 26Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

One idea is to collect old copies of the Rotarian Magazine, sticker them with an invitation to come join you at your meeting, and leave them in professional offices around town!

Slide 27

TITLE | 27Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

A second idea is for your club, or a group of clubs in the same area, to join your local Chamber of Commerce as a Corporate Member. With most chambers a corporate member can get access to relocation lists, contact information for people who are inquiring about your community or who have recently moved there. Personal letters to these individuals can often open the door to new members!

Page 13: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

Slide 28

TITLE | 28Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

A third idea is for Clubs to understand that projects don’t just have to raise money or solve a problem! Developing a regular event that is popular and entertaining for the community can do a lot for spreading the good name of Rotary and attracting new members who might not have known you were there!

Slide 29

TITLE | 29Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

While Rob has other ideas on his own list, I think you can see that any Club could come up with their own, and that these simple “practical” ideas can work!

Slide 30

TITLE | 30Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Monthly Membership

Update Reports

from the Governor…

,,,,Send to

EVERYONE !!!

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

The 3rd item on our list is very simple yet surprisingly effective. Each month the District Governor sends EVERY Rotarian in the District an update of where every Club is for both membership and goals set on Rotary Club Central. The DG will write a short summary of how we are doing as a District, and will recognize the top Clubs for growth and/or innovative ideas. This update is a separate communication from the monthly report or bulletin from the DG or District, it is specifically about membership growth!

Page 14: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

Rotary Leads Report

- Who is responsible

for follow-up ?

- phone calls, emails?

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Now item 4 is one that I know a lot of you are already on top of! The membership leads that Rotary International sends out are a tremendous resource for identifying potential new members! I urge you to examine how you are dealing with these leads within your own District… Is there a specific person that handles each lead, or are multiple people doing different things with the information? Do prospects receive a personal phone call, or just an email? Does the communication chain get properly documented and dated?

Slide 32

TITLE | 32Rotary Membership Development Webinar Series: Zones 24 & 32

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

The 5th tool in our bag is one we are just getting started with, so there is not yet a lot of data on how successful this will be for us, but there is no doubt about the value! Every Rotary Club and District has a LOT of alumni in various categories, and these may be useful contacts when looking for new members, or promoting a District Conference or a fundraising dinner or some other event. What is probably true for virtually every District is that these data bases are not being utilized as well as they might be.

Page 15: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

Alumni

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Of course there are youth exchange students who went overseas and have returned. Maybe they have moved on to another city, or even outside of your District, but they can still be encouraged to seek out a local Rotary or Rotaract Club! And they have parents who probably still live in your community… are we reaching them?

Slide 34

Alumni

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Same thing applies to Rotary Youth Leadership Award graduates and their parents. These are generally non-Rotarians who have been inspired by their experience at the RYLA weekend!

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

The old Group Study Exchange program has resulted in many names of relatively high-achieving young professionals, who by design were NOT yet involved with Rotary. I would bet some of them have a pretty good idea of just how valuable Rotary can be! Then there is the evolution of the GSE,

Page 16: Ç oµ [ D u Z] YXEKtJJJ Slide 1 - Rotary District 5060 …...Hi Everyone…. Thank you for being with us today. My name is Jackie Hobal and I am the Rotary Membership Coordinator

How many names do you think there are in your District of people who are NOT Rotarians but who know better than many just how amazing Rotary can be??

Slide 37

Teleconferencing

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

Number 6 is one that I know many of you are already taking advantage of, but perhaps more could be done with it? With todays teleconferencing options we don’t need to let geography interfere with our ability to share and develop ideas and “best practices” any more!

Satellite Clubs

Grow YOUR Rotary Club’s Membership….NOW !!!

And this brings me to our final suggestion for today’s list of Membership Development ideas, Rotary satellite clubs. These are not simply extensions of a traditional Club, oh no, these clubs are different! They are specifically designed to appeal to all the clubs in a particular area, and to allow the full flexibility of Rotary International’s latest bylaw revisions to create new ways to enjoy our Club experience!

Slide 43

During non-meeting weeks the Club decides what the program will be in advance. Perhaps to meet at the Club’s local Service Project one evening… of course, bringing family and friends along! (CLICK) Maybe a physical activity? Meet at a park and go for a walk, or a bike ride. Who knows, maybe schedule a “Club & Friends” yoga class?!! (CLICK) Of course, a monthly social is a given, perhaps at a home or out for a meal or appies. Scheduling a specific and targeted presentation at a local theatre or class allows for invitations to non-Rotarians who may have an interest in that

topic, and of course, potential new members! And maybe a monthly e-meeting with other “sister” Rotary-Now clubs that will eventually be scattered throughout the district! The key is, as per the findings of siegel+gale mentioned previously with the “Membership Matters!” program, the Club will initially and primarily focus on friendship, fellowship, and local community service.

Now the first club of this type that we have started is in Kelowna British Columbia, and we are calling it Rotary Now! Kelowna after the Zone-24-Based young-professional’s program that we helped work on before. So what’s new? (CLICK) Well, to start we meet twice per month as per the minimum required by Rotary bylaws, currently the 1st & 3rd Wednesday at a boardroom in a local high-tech incubator known as Accelerate Okanagan. (CLICK) We meet from 4 to 5, we never go overtime, and there are no costs associated with this

Club except for the annual dues to the host club. (CLICK) There is no anthem, no invocation, no sergeant-at-arms, no weekly presentation, no happy-bucks. The Clubs all start without any Rotary traditions until and unless they are introduced by the membership. (CLICK) During non-meeting weeks the Club decides what the program will be in advance.
