Filosofia “Taylor made”
“Taylor-made” philosophy
The cladding of a building must be a ‘new garment’, made to measure according to the customer’s specifications.
Unique and unrepeatable, like any true design.
L’architettura contemporanea richiede sempre maggiore sim-
biosi fra contenuti estetici e prestazioni tecnologiche e funzio-
nali.
sopraelevati, piscine, arredo urbano, bagni in prefabbricazione
General contractor, costruttori
edili, studi di architettura e di ingegneria, interior designer,
hotel, spa, centri wellness e centri sportivi: tutti questi interlocu-
Contemporary architecture increasingly requires a greater symbiosis
between the aesthetic content and the technological and functional
features. The covering of a building, its vertical and horizontal
surfaces, must interact with the climatic factors, the external
environmental dynamics, and the interior distributive and plant
requirements. Based on these needs, the Florim group established
Florim Solutions to provide the market with not only superior quality
ceramic materials but also a single partner specialised in the design
and production of systems and solutions for ventilated façades,
raised floors, swimming pools, urban furnishings, and bathrooms
in light prefabrication, offering high level support, complete and
dedicated, from the initial phase of the project up to the final
installation. The models of project management are adapted to
each individual job to ensure the right balance of the objectives,
costs, and timeframes. General contractors, construction firms,
architectural firms, engineering firms, interior designers, hotels,
spas, wellness centres and sports centres: all have the possibility to
be assisted in the design and creation of their structures and facilities
as well as to obtain the best proposals in terms of the materials and
processes employed, innovation and eco-sustainability.

come fulcro dello sviluppo industriale.
to, uno step fondamentale in direzione ecosostenibile è stato
lanato a spessore sottile Stontech Slim/4 (Floor Gres), Abi-
sko Slim/4 (Rex) e Pietre Slim/4 (Casa dolce Casa). Inoltre, i
mente virtuose in ogni aspetto dell’attività produttiva.
A dicembre
rigorose procedure codificate a livello internazionale volte a
migliorare il sistema interno di gestione ambientale. Sempre
Comunicazione ambientale e sociale”.
te a tutti i suoi stakeholders.
In 2010 Florim published the third edition of its Sustainability
Report. The report documents how the resources destined to
research and innovation coincide with improvement of the quality
of the environment inside and outside the industrial system and
the enhancement of human resources as the fulcrum of industrial
development. The new production plants have made it possible to
further optimise the processes, minimise environmental impact,
and improve worker safety conditions. In terms of the product, a
significant step in the direction of eco-sustainability was obtaining
the Ecolabel mark for the thin slab porcelain stoneware series
Stontech Slim/4 (Floor Gres), Abisko Slim/4 (Rex), and Pietre
Slim/4 (Casa Dolce Casa). In addition, a number of product series
belonging to Florim brands received certification from Bureau Veritas
as products containing pre-consumer recycled material. This many-
faceted environmental sensitivity has generated strategies that are
ecologically virtuous in every aspect of the production activity, also
in the management of waste materials, which are handled by a
computerised system that provides for the recovery and storage of
scraps. But also in terms of energy savings, thanks to the purchase
of a co-generation plant for electric power that began operation in
February 2011, which will make it possible to cover 60% of the
factory’s energy requirements, with the prospect of reaching 85%
when the installation of a photovoltaic plant of approximately
16,000 m2 is completed in the same area. Moreover, Florim has
received numerous recognitions for this authentic green vocation,
which translates consistently into values, strategies, and concrete
operation. In December 2010, TÜV awarded Florim UNI EN ISO
14001 certification, which certifies the company’s conformity to the
most rigorous procedures codified at the international level aimed
at improving the entire environmental management system. Also
in 2010, for the second consecutive year, Florim won the Corporate
Social Responsibility Award for the province of Modena, the first
company in the ceramic sector to take the award in the category
“Environmental and Social Accounting and Communication”.
The award certified Florim’s concrete commitment to being a
socially and economically transparent and reliable partner towards
its stakeholders. Because if eco-sustainability is the economy of
tomorrow, for Florim tomorrow is already here.

“Secondo le logiche storiche
dell’antropizzazione urbanistica il

“According to the historical logic of
urban anthropisation, the centre

market with the respective piazza.”
17
futuro dall’esigenza ecologica?
“According to the historical logic of urban anthropisation,” explains Delio Corbara, author of the
project, “the centre rises on the site designated for the market with the respective piazza.” The spaces
are therefore organised on a structure composed of three main aggregative elements: the covered
piazza, the galleria connected to it, and the atrium of the tower.
Why was ceramic material chosen for the façades?
A decisive factor in the choice was the advanced production technology of Florim Solutions, which
allows ceramic material to take on the original appearance of natural stone while also guaranteeing
greater versatility of use, better technical features, easier maintenance, and lower environmental
impact in relation to the production processes.
From the point of view of the materials, what new design challenges will emerge in the near future
as a result of the environmental demands?
In addition to being easily available and recyclable, the materials and the technologies of the future will
have to be durable in appearance and performance over time, with maintenance increasingly tending
towards zero in terms of both frequency and costs.
In what way can supplier companies assume the role of partner in a project?
For the designer, the companies should not constitute an element of constraint but should contribute to
finding possible solutions and improvements with respect to the ever-changing demands of “good building”.

fissato meccanicamente all’intelaiatura perimetrale dell’edificio
The ceramic ventilated façade is an exterior cladding system for
buildings, the ideal combination between the maximum level of
aesthetic appeal and the best thermal features. From the structural
point of view, it is an overhang system, composed of an external
facing in slabs of porcelain stoneware mechanically fastened to the
perimeter framework of the building by means of a structure in
aluminium alloy. Thanks to this particular construction technique,
the surface of the cladding remains separate from the masonry.
The resulting cavity is partially occupied by a layer of thermal
insulating material, leaving the rest of the space empty to allow for
ventilation. Therefore an “air jet” is created; that is, a continuous
flow of aeration, which provides significant benefits in terms of
breathability and a decrease of heat loads.

riguarda i consumi energetici. A livello globale tutti i paesi han-
bile i consumi.
In particolare,
comporta i seguenti benefici:
mento e raffreddamento.
— Aumento della salubrità dell’ambiente interno grazie all’eli-
facciata ventilata, oltre a proteggere l’edificio dagli agenti at-
all’irraggiamento, in regime invernale, riducendo le dispersioni
superficiali legate all’azione del vento.
The costs related to heating and cooling the living environments
are the most expensive item in terms of energy consumption. At
the global level, all countries have introduced very strict regulations
on the performance required of exterior coverings and technical
plants to reduce consumption as much as possible. The ventilated
façade intervenes on the weakest element of a building from this
point of view: the walls. Thanks to the layer of insulating material
situated externally, the system makes it possible to improve the
overall insulation of the building, contributing to the elimination of
heat bridges and the full exploitation of the thermal inertia of the
wall itself. In particular, at the level of interior living comfort, the
elimination of heat bridges provides the following benefits:
— Reduction of total dispersion up to 20%, enabling substantial
savings on heating and cooling costs.
— More healthy interior environment thanks to the elimination
of condensation and mould, which are usually related to the low
surface temperature of the internal masonry in correspondence with
heat bridges.
In addition, the shield in porcelain stoneware typical of the ventilated
façade system not only protects the building from atmospheric
agents but also provides dual improvement of the thermal
performance: in summer, reducing the thermal loads resulting from
radiation and, in the winter, reducing surface dispersion linked to
the action of the wind.

The systems for anchoring the slabs comprise brackets made of
aluminium alloy secured to the façade by means of mechanical or
chemical anchors depending on the type of support. The number
of brackets will be indicated on a case-by-case basis according
to the weight of the structure and the conditions related to wind
pressure/depression. The vertical load-bearing rods are secured to
the brackets with rivets, with “fixed points” and “sliding points” to
enable the expansion of the structure.

1 wallfix v1Aggancio meccanico a vista.
1 wallfix v1Visible mechanical hook.
This is the simplest and most economical method, as it does not
require any additional machining on the ceramic material. The slabs
are fitted directly on the load-bearing structure with special hooks
made of steel or aluminium, usually enamelled in the same colour
as the ceramic material so that they are camouflaged. The structure
is formed of metallic vertical rods that have the same pitch as the
horizontal side of the slab.

A system of concealed mechanical hooks that involves a substructure
made of vertical rods onto which the slabs are hooked. In this
method, a special clamp plate is inserted into the milling points on
the back of the slab in order to hook it only to the vertical profiles.
2 wallfix s1Aggancio meccanico a scomparsa a foratura puntuale.
2 wallfix s1Concealed mechanical hook with point drilling.
A system of concealed mechanical hooks that involves making four
truncated-conical flared circular holes on the back of the slabs, in
which the screw anchors are inserted that have specific hooks for
anchoring the slabs to the structure. The structure is composed of
load-bearing vertical rods and horizontal profiles. The pitch of the
horizontal structure is given by the height of the slabs, and the pitch
of the vertical load-bearing structure depends on the calculations.

“A building is like a large sculpture, in which the proportions, the colours, the various constituent parts
must arrive at the same harmonious conclusion.”
The works of Giovanni Mistretta deliberately elude any definition of genre and rise in the context as
authentic objects of art, unique and unrepeatable. We ask him about the spark that ignited the project
of Via delle Forze Armate in Milan. “The idea arose from the presence of the two facing parks,” he
explains. “The first step was therefore to orient the position of the buildings so that they ‘look’ towards
the two green areas. I was thinking of a sort of ‘visual machine’, a continuous observatory, without
blind spots on the landscape.” Right from the start, he posed the problem of identifying a covering
that could incorporate in a single surface, seamlessly, a series of architectural volumes different in form
and structure. In this logic, the Florim materials proved to be the most flexible and technically high-
performance solution to create a sort of ‘epidermis’ that could follow with micrometric precision refined
connections between cylindrical bodies, soft curves, and squared profiles like blocks of stone. The result
is a relationship of perfect symbiosis between the forms of the structure and the covering, enhanced by
refined colour combinations and broad tonal fields.

ramiche direttamente sull’intonaco esterno.
in produzione.
cevere un rivestimento incollato o non correttamente maturati;
— Condizioni climatiche poco favorevoli (caldo o freddo ecces-
The advantages of an exterior cladding in porcelain stoneware
can also be obtained by gluing the ceramic slabs directly onto the
exterior plaster. Despite the very high performance achieved by the
adhesives currently on the market, the regulations and certifications
for laying exterior ceramic coverings are such that the adhesive
manufacturers cannot guarantee the overall resistance of the
“wall system” as a whole. This is because, compared to interior
applications, there are more “third party” variables with respect
to the adhesive that influence the creation of an exterior ceramic
covering, and they affect not only the duration of the wall over time
but also the installation operation itself, which thus becomes a very
important and very delicate phase.
Briefly, these variables are:
— External air temperature and the temperature of the materials.
— Extreme temperature changes.
— Infiltrations of water and of aggressive substances.
— Preparation of the plaster and of the masonry.
— Method of laying.

As regards the solar reflectance of the covering, the choice of
colour of the ceramic material is extremely important, as dark
colours tend to absorb a larger quantity of solar rays and thus to
increase in temperature. The solar reflectance values of the colours
can be indicatively subdivided according to the following table.

In the use of large size slabs, increasingly employed in architectural
projects, systems that support traditional gluing are required so
as to guarantee greater safety of the seal of the system over time.
For this purpose, to secure the façade to the masonry structure, in
addition to the adhesive, special mechanical retaining elements are
used in order to definitively eliminate the risk of detachment in the
event that the chemical anchoring fails. Florim has tested various
types of mechanical hooks, visible or concealed, that are able to
make the system safer, considerably improving the seal resistance
without complicating the installation phase.

1 kerfix fsAggancio meccanico a scomparsa.
preparato tramite apposita fresatura.
1 kerfix fsConcealed mechanical hook
In the Kerfix FS[1] system, a 0.5 mm thick stainless steel hook is
inserted on the back of the tile previously prepared by means of
a special milling procedure. The hook is designed to allow slab
positioning using adhesives and the subsequent mechanical
fastening using screw anchors. The upper part of the hook is
covered and therefore concealed by the subsequent ceramic slab.
The stainless steel hook is supplied already assembled on the back
of the slab to ensure the maximum speed of installation. For slabs
with side up to 60 cm, one hook is recommended, whereas for
dimensions between 90 cm and 120 cm two hooks spaced about
40 cm apart are recommended.
[1] The system allows the use of the Florim Slim44 slabs.
Slim/4, Florim’s system of thin slabs, is the perfect solution for all projects
requiring high tech features, such as glued façades, shipbuilding, and the new
generation of prefabricated houses, where it is necessary to drastically reduce the
weight load (8 kg per square metre instead of 20 kg), at the same time expressing
a strong design content and excellent performance features.

3 clipfix fsAggancio meccanico a vista.
sere lasciate nell’originale colore acciaio, oppure venire smalta-
3 clipfix fsVisible mechanical hook.
With this system, the slabs are anchored by means of stainless steel clips,
which are fastened to the wall in depth by means of screw anchors.
Depending on the architect’s aesthetic choices, the clips can be left in
the original steel colour or enamelled in the same colour as the ceramic
material so that they are visible only from a short distance. Each clip works
on two slabs, and for sizes up to 60 cm it is recommended to insert one
clip per horizontal side, whereas for dimensions between 90 cm and 120
cm, two clips spaced about 40 cm apart are recommended. Placing the
retaining hooks at the four corners of the slabs is usually an aesthetic choice.
2 edgefix fsAggancio meccanico a scomparsa.
2 edgefix fsConcealed mechanical hook.
In the EdgeFix FS system, point milling is carried out on the edge
of the slab for inserting the hook that is mechanically fastened to
the wall. Once the joints are grouted, the retaining hook remains
invisible. Each hook works on two slabs, and for slabs with side up
to 60 cm it is recommended to insert one EdgeFix FS per horizontal
side, whereas for dimensions between 90 cm and 120 cm, two hooks
spaced about 40 cm apart are recommended.

What were the considerations and the needs that led to the choice of a raised floor?
The possibility of making the use of the work stations very flexible and to be able to integrate them
quickly and easily.
Why was ceramic material chosen as the surface finish as opposed to other materials?
Because ceramic tile guarantees a long lifetime, easy cleaning, and a very high quality aesthetic standard.
What are the key factors for the correct planning and management of these dimensions?
The first is the ability to plan the timelines based on the specific needs of the company. Then, a truly
integrated service becomes necessary in order to guarantee that the customer can interact with a single
partner for all the aspects regarding technical support, from the preliminary tests to the maintenance
phase.
After four years from the installation, how would you evaluate the choices made?
Certainly excellent. First of all, the material has brilliantly confirmed the best performance expectations.
The appearance has remained unaltered and the ease of maintenance has shown to be an important
factor. Moreover, the passing time has brought other advantages to the forefront. One in particular: the
possibility to combine a raised floor with a traditional glued floor using the same surface finish.

The “floating” floor is a suspended flooring system in which the
walkover surface does not lay directly on the ground but on a raised
structure. A technical space is thus created between the substrate
and the floor that is used for housing the technical systems. The
modules that compose the floor are simply laid on the support
structure and can therefore be removed at any time to access the
underlying zone. All this translates into a considerable increase in
the versatility of functional designation of the rooms. Thanks to the
raised floor, adding a work station or moving a light point, mains
outlet, or air-conditioning unit becomes an operation of routine
maintenance, providing significant savings in time and costs. The
possibility of easily changing the organisation of the spaces is a
perfect response to modern multifunctional living needs.
This is demonstrated by the success of raised floors in the contexts of
the service industry and offices, but also by the growing demand for
“floating” floors for the new mixed-use spaces.

The Florim Solutions raised floor is composed of two main
elements: the panel and its support structure. The panel, usually in
the 60x60 cm format, is made by gluing a finishing slab of Florim
porcelain stoneware onto a 3-4 cm support. The slab constitutes
the walkover surface, guaranteeing aesthetic qualities and excellent
cleanability, inalterability and durability over time. In the technical
space concealed between the substrate and the floor, any type of
technical plant or equipment can be housed. The connections of the
plants with the rooms are made by means of openings with related
turrets or grates for the passage of air. The minimum height of the
floor with respect to the support surface varies from 7 to 8 cm, so the
solution of the raised floor can also be adapted to pre-existing floors.

E i be-
me e degli scarti.
successiva rimodulazione, in quanto l’impiantistica viaggia li-
raggiunta e riposizionata.
— Praticità nelle operazioni di manutenzione grazie all’accessi-
With respect to traditional floors, the raised solution has such a
range of favourable points that it affects practically every aspect of
indoor liveability. And the benefits regard not only the functional
and economic aspects but also the aspect of sustainability, providing
considerable savings in terms of the use and disposal of the raw
materials and scraps.
In summary, a raised floor stands out for the following advantages:
— Flexibility in the distribution of the spaces and in their subsequent
remodulation, as the technical plants travel freely beneath the
flooring and can be easily reached and re-positioned.
— Practicality in maintenance operations thanks to the accessibility
of the plants.
— Versatility. The raised floor can also be positioned over a pre-
existing floor and can be used for joining surfaces with different
heights.
— Possibility of re-use. Dry laying without the use of adhesives
enables single panels or the whole floor to be moved to a different
location than the original one.

A pannello finito, vie-
to è di 48 mm circa.
The upper covering is in Florim porcelain stoneware, proposed
without any limits in the use of finishes or surfaces, in order to
respond to the different aesthetic and design needs.
The slab is glued to the support panel and the coupled material is
rectified and machined to obtain a slight flaring towards the inside
and downward, in order to facilitate the floor installation and
handling. The panel thus prepared is given a perimeter finishing
border of minimum thickness made of self-extinguishing ABS. The
border, made in a matching colour with the floor, covers the entire
height of the panel, acts as a joint, ensures the junction between the
modules, and guarantees easy moving and handling. When the panel
is finished, the porcelain slab is given a slight bevelling. In addition to
the standard 60x60 cm format, it is also possible to produce panels of
different sizes: 45x45 cm, 30x60 cm, 60x120 cm, 30x120 cm, 40x80
cm and 80x80 cm. The support core can be made of different types
of material to adapt to the specific needs of each space. In any case,
the main ‘families’ are:
Chipboard
Chipboard is composed of wood chips, resins, and high-density inert
fillers that give the panel excellent mechanical strength and fire
resistance. The thickness of the finished panel is approximately 48
mm. This type of support is recommended for medium loads and is
very economical. The lower finish is composed of a layer of veneer
or melamine.
Sulphate
Compound of anhydrous calcium sulphate reinforced with organic
fibres that contain no asbestos or other toxic materials. This
composition combines high mechanical strength with excellent
soundproofing, which reduces the noise of walkover traffic. Thanks
to its characteristics, this material is stable over time and guarantees
better resistance to moisture than chipboard. The thickness of the
finished panel is approximately 40 mm. The lower finish is composed
of a primer or a thin sheet of aluminium.

pavimenti autoposanti/self-laying floors
Ciò è possibile in quanto
semplice accostamento, vengono infatti posizionate e rimosse
senza opere di muratura o demolizione, e senza dovere neces-
sariamente ricorrere a manodopera specializzata.
stema posato.
Easy Flooring is the modular system of dry self-laying flooring
developed by Florim Solutions. It is designed to update the aesthetics
of the spaces by laying a new ceramic floor directly over the pre-
existing floor, which is possible because this solution does not require
the preparation of a screed or the use of adhesives or grouts. The
slabs, assembled by simply laying side-by-side, are positioned and
removed without any masonry works or demolition, and without
necessarily required specialised labour. These characteristics derive
from the particular composition of Easy Flooring: a 2 mm thick
rubber and cork support is applied to a porcelain stoneware slab.
The support, in addition to its soundproofing function, also increases
the grip of the slabs on the substrate. The thickness also makes it
possible to absorb slight defects on the underlying surface.A PVC
border, bevelled along with the slab, protects the ceramic material
during laying, then acts as the joint once the system is laid.

Gemini è l’innovativo sistema di pavimentazione in gres por-
cellanato autoportante per esterni made in Florim Solutions.
Progetti di Florim, trasferendone il know how in ambito exterior,
dell’acqua piovana sotto i pannelli.
Gemini is the innovative self-bearing outdoor tiling system using
porcelain stoneware made by Florim Solutions.
Ideal for gardens, terraces, and decks, the Gemini system arose from
the experience accrued by the Florim Projects Division in interior
raised floors, transferring the know-how to the outdoor environment,
which requires a combination of aesthetics, performance, versatility,
and easy laying. The panel is formed by gluing two slabs of porcelain
stoneware together, the upper one chosen from the range of Florim
finishes for exteriors. A solution that is elegant but also resistant,
durable, and easy to maintain, to create a self-bearing floor of 2 cm
thickness without screed, providing savings in terms of loads, costs,
and labour. The support structure is composed of load-bearing
supports available in different heights, but the slabs can also be laid
directly on sand, gravel, or grass by means of simple “DIY” laying
operations. The tiling is laid with open joints to allow rainwater
runoff below the panels.

37 mm a oltre 500 mm.
1 fixed supports (EH)These elements enable the laying of outdoor raised floors with
minimum height from the substrate of 12 mm, with the possibility
to use 3 mm levelling disks for specific zones. The supports are made
of a single element that can be divided into four parts depending on
the type of laying to be carried out (corners, edges, or wall border).
They are also equipped with four spacers that make it possible to
create the joints between the tiles.
2 adjustable supports (NM)Allow adjustable heights with millimetric precision, from 37 mm
to more than 500 mm. They come with a central ring that allows
micro-adjustment in height without having to remove the slabs.
This support solution is designed for laying on surfaces with uneven
heights, guaranteeing stability and the capacity to cover steps or
differences in level.
3 self-levelling supports (SE)Allow heights adjusted millimetrically from 25 mm to more
than 250 mm, and have a self-levelling head that compensates
for slopes up to 5%.
informazioni tecniche/technical informations
sibile a rottura puntuale > 1000 Kg).
— Resistenza agli sbalzi termici.
Thanks to the removability of the slabs, the Gemini floor considerably
simplifies the inspection and maintenance of the underlying surface,
avoiding costly works of demolition and replacement. The air gap
between the floor and the sheath enables ventilation, thus fostering
improved thermal insulation. This makes it possible to more
effectively combat thermal shock and rising damp. In addition,
the open joints allow rapid rainwater runoff, preventing moisture
stagnation and helping to keep the walkover surface drier and safer.
The specific advantages of the system can be summed up as follows:
— Very high breaking strength (admissible load at break > 1000 kg)
— Possibility to use all Florim tile (from 45x45 cm to 60x120 cm) and
finishes.
— Skid-proof finishes coordinatable with the interior flooring.
— Resistance to frost and to the use of salts outdoors.
— Resistance to thermal shock.
— Easy to lay even without specialised labourers.
— Easy to clean also with power washer.
— Easy to remove and reuse.
— Easy positioning and inspection of plants.
— Thermal insulation of decks and terraces in summer.
— Resistance to mould and moss.

italiana, quali Del Debbio, Milani, Moretti, Monaco, Libera e Lapadula.
Wich was the inspirational source of the project?
The Ostia Swimming Pool project was born in 2007, with a view to the 2009 Swimming World
Championship in Rome. The inspiration source was the Roman littoral architectural context: an
‘experimental laboratory’, since the ‘20’s and ‘30’s, for the main characters of the Italian rationalist
architecture: Del Debbio, Milani, Moretti, Monaco, Libera and Lapadula. Hence the will to present
again on the seafront a new mark of that neo-rationalism, deeply impressed in Ostia and Eur buildings.
How was the collaboration with Florim Solutions born?
Certainly it is due to the widely known values of the company such as efficiency and know how. I have
been Florim partner for years just for its extraordinary products. For the Swimming Pool project in
particular, Florim Solutions has supported us with specific and unique materials (as for example the
anti-grip for the poolsides), perfectly dedicated to the different areas of the strucure.
How did the Ostia Swimming Pool answer about eco-sustainability?
We based on geothermal sience, using the warmth coming from the water-bearing stratum. In addition,
outside we have installed a vertical wind structure in order to evaluate the actions and the strength
of the wind. This has been made to anticipate an eventual integration of the wind power within the
energetic system of the building.

problemi difficilmente riscontrabili in altri campi architettonici.

The characteristics of a swimming pool pose a series of problems
that are not normally found in other architectural fields.
Perennial contact with water and the wet surfaces, walking with
bare feet, the huge range of regulations regarding hygiene and
safety, all impose design and construction competencies that can
only be acquired through specific experience in the field.
From the point of view of construction techniques, the reinforced
concrete structure and the ceramic tile covering are certainly
considered to be the solution of greatest prestige, elegance, hygiene,
and long-term economy. And when the installation follows all the
correct criteria of design and execution, the swimming pool will
have a solidity and a durability highly superior to all the solutions
using other materials. Florim has been a leader in this sector for
over forty years, and our success is due in large part to the capacity
and continuity of the group in providing expert design support.
Florim Solutions has accrued and developed this legacy, offering
customers our background and know-how in the sector throughout
the design and development process and providing assistance in
each technical, operational, and aesthetic choice.

1)Sistemi a “skimmers”
ll ricambio dell’acqua avviene direttamente attraverso delle
bocchette (skimmers) posizionate nelle pareti della vasca 15-
25 cm sotto il livello della pavimentazione. L’acqua s’immette
nello skimmer, viene filtrata dai residui grossolani e senza ul-
depurata all’interno della vasca. Questo sistema, per motivi
igenico-legislativi, è ormai legato soltanto a realizzazioni priva-
te.
In the construction of a swimming pool, the overflow edge is the
most important element, conditioning all the other structural and
engineering components. The types of overflow edge can be divided
into two large families:
1) Skimmer systems
The water exchange takes place directly by means of the drain
openings (skimmers) positioned in the walls of the pool 15-25 cm
below the level of the pool deck.
The water flows into the skimmers, filtered of the coarse residues,
and without further passages is directed towards the filters. The
purified water is then reintroduced into the pool basin. For hygienic
and legal reasons, this system is now used only for private pools.
The skimmers that collect the water, in fact, leave wide areas
of “stagnation”, especially on the surface, where the majority of
polluting substances are concentrated.
2) Overflow systems
Water overflow systems, as indicated by the name, involve the
presence of a channel in which the swimming pool water flows.
From the engineering point of view, they differ from skimmer
systems due to the presence of a balance tank: a basin-tank, usually
concealed, necessary for compensating for the differences in water
volume created by the greater or lesser number of bathers present.
Over the last several years, the water overflow systems have followed
an evolution that has led to the creation of the channel at the level
of the pool deck (at a variable distance from the edge of the pool),
with respect to the initial tendency to insert the channel in the wall,
15-20 cm below the deck level. The current legislation dictates that
in swimming pools for public use the overflow edge must be at
least 75% of the perimeter of the basin (or on the long sides in the
case of rectangular swimming pools used for competitive events),
with a complete water recycling time of two hours for swimming
pools dedicated to children, four hours for public-recreational pools,
and six hours for pools used for competition. For this reason, it is
important to correctly calculate – with safety margins in excess - the
flow rate capacity of the piping connected to the overflow channel.

Elba (Finlandese)
Australia (Zurich)
This system is similar to the Elba type, with the difference that the
fitting between the channel and the basin is made with an opposite
slope (instead of creating a “beach effect”, the water flows on the
surface) and the initial element of the edge has a raised edge that
acts as a hand grip for bathers. In functional terms, it has the same
features as the Elba edge.
Elba (Finnish)
The overflow channel is situated further from the pool basin and
the connecting element slopes towards the basin, creating a sort
of “beach effect”. Due to its aesthetic qualities and excellent
functionality, this is the most widely used type of edge. Thanks to
its shape, the waves are buffered without being reverberated, a very
important advantage for swimming pools used for competition.
The special trim situated along the sloped part has a hand grip for
bathers.

Capri (Wiesbaden Alto)
adatto principalmente a piscine private.
Abano
This is the most economical type of edge, used with the simplest filtration
system. It requires only one finishing element for the edge of the basin.
Due to the lower quality filtration and water recycling, it is mainly suited
for private swimming pools.
Ischia (Low-level Wiesbaden)
The channel is inserted in the pool wall, 15-20 cm below the level of
the deck. This type of edge is chosen less than the previous types in that,
maintaining the water level lower than the walkover surface, it does not
fully exploit the entire volume of the basin, making it more difficult for
bathers to climb out. However, it does have the advantage of making full
use of the walkable area.
Capri (High-level Wiesbaden)
The overflow channel is situated at the level of the tiling close to the
basin and covered with a PVC grate that can be walked over. The
special trim, with a riser that provides the hand grip for the bathers,
creates the pool edge without the addition of other elements and is
assembled directly on the structural wall.

Much more than just a special trim system, the Dolphin and Marea
edges are a true system that provides an immediate response to
the increasingly complex design demands in the world of swimming
pools and wellness. Both types are composed of two elements, the
first formed by an inner core in ultra-light waterproof material with
high mechanical resistance and low specific weight, which makes
it easy to transport and install; the second element is the ceramic
covering: the support can be covered with a wide range of Florim
products featuring high resistance to slipping.
In this way the Dolphin edge and the Marea edge exclusively
combine the advantages of an attractive ergonomic form with
considerable flexibility of application and design freedom in the
choice of the materials.

trasformandole in autentiche scenografie.
Le Club of Ovada goes beyond the traditional concept of a sports club and functions as a multipurpose
space for social gathering. The “active” heart, composed of the fitness zone and the swimming pool, is
an integral part of a larger “organism”, which encompasses the relaxation zone and the restaurant as
equally important and connotative elements. The visual interpenetration between the environments,
which in any case remain separate from the functional point of view, generates a perception of the
expansive and pleasing volumes. The opening onto the outdoor green space takes you into the natural
element, heightening the intensity and the quality of the emotional experience linked to the site. We
asked the architect, Roberto Ulzi, how Florim Solutions contributed to the project. “Florim Solutions,”
he explained, “was first of all an ideal partner from the creative point of view. One essential feature
was the tactile aspect of the Florim surfaces, which we enhanced with the use of light, transforming
them into authentic “scenery”. In general we opted for natural materials, like the Belgique woods by
Casa Dolce Casa or the Walks/1.0 Grey by Floor Grès, of which we appreciated the enormous versatility
of combination with different surfaces, from leather to wood to mosaics. “What technical difficulties
arose,” we asked, “and what solutions did you find?” “The main problem was creating the overflow
edge of the pool of the large whirlpool spa. But this was resolved effectively using the L-shaped element
as a connector between the deck and the covering of the perimeter overflow channel of the tub.
The aesthetic result was exceptional, and also the functionality of the seven centimetres of the vertical
step part, which prevents the water from flowing out of the tub despite the power of the jets.”

In questi spazi è
all’interno. Verso tale obiettivo devono concorrere tutte le disci-
pline progettuali, dalla composizione architettonica, all’ergono-
The world of wellness is inextricably linked to water and its
beneficial effects. The rediscovery of hydrotherapy has contributed
over the last several years to an exponential growth of spas and
wellness centres that integrate various types of services in a single
location, such as spa therapies, aesthetic treatments, fitness,
and Oriental medicine. In these spaces, it is essential to be able
to offer the public an environmental context that can transmit
sensations of wellbeing, attention, refinement and often also
exclusivity, aimed to heighten and confirm the positive nature
of the clients’ experiences. Achieving this objective requires the
contribution of all the design disciplines, from the architectural
composition to ergonomics to the interior design with its study of
the colours, surfaces, and materials. In this view, Florim Solutions
has developed a wide array of proposals, taking advantage of
forty years of deep familiarity with the first and most precious
element for mankind, making the company a world leader in the
swimming pool sector. The solutions offered cover all the cardinal
points of design specific to the sector: combining an impeccable
technological installation, with many futuristic features, with a
‘scenic’ environment that is able to communicate emotions.

possedere i seguenti requisiti:

The wellness sector is a field in which the know-how of Florim
Solutions finds its ideal home, able on one hand to enhance to the
utmost its creative vocation, and on the other hand to effectively
express its functional values, thanks to a wide range of integrated
solutions. In particular, the characteristics of Florim materials are
particularly suitable in defining the right coordinates of a transversal
environment with many different types of use, such as the wellness
swimming pool, increasingly perceived and sought after in its guise
as an ‘oasis’. That is, a ‘microcosm’ in and of itself in which one can
partake in the whole gamut of experiences of wellness, physical and
mental, that water can offer.
Specifically, with respect to the purely recreational or sports-oriented
swimming pools, the wellness pool must possess the following
requisites:
— Free and non-standardised form, subject to a high level of
customisation in design.
— Multi-purpose functionality (swimming, acquagym, hydrobike,
hydromassage, thermal baths, relaxation, etc.).
— Emotional settings joined with technical, logistical, and
engineering structures with a high technological level.
— High visual impact, achieved with carefully studied balancing of
forms, colours, and contrasts.
— Water features, fountains, waterfalls.
— Refined lighting: frequent use of led lighting, fibre optics, and
spotlights.
— Natural elements and references as instruments that amplify the
sensation of well-being.
— Dialogue with the outdoors: use of architectural elements that
provide continuity between the environments, such as glass walls.
— High design content.

bagno.
sistema coerente. I sistemi Florim by Makro permettono invece
— unico interlocutore.
Florim by Makro originated from the encounter between a leading
player in the ceramic industry and a young production company
equipped with advanced know-how specialised in technical products
for the bathroom. The aim of this collaboration is to develop a new
way of designing the bathroom that involves the perfect integration
of the sanitary fittings with the ceramic covering within a complete
and homogeneous system, able to propose new aesthetic solutions
and to expand the array of application solutions. Up till now, the
use of ceramic tile in the bathroom has been limited primarily to
covering floors and walls. Moreover, in this sector, the large variety
and diversity of product types, rather than aiding designers, has
ended up being disorienting them, making it difficult to find a
coherent system. The Florim by Makro systems, on the other hand,
allow design professionals to find new forms of expression: undertop
bathtubs, showers and washbasin tops with high technical content
and extremely easy to lay, proposed with an integrated programme
of tiling and coordinated ceramic accessories.
— easy installation
— cleaner job site
— lower labour costs
— infinite possibilities of combinations between colours,
surfaces, and volumes
— savings in project execution and delivery times
— working with a single partner.

percorsi tattili/tactile routes
Florim Solutions has developed a system of self-guided routes for
people with visual impairments, called the Loges Floor Path. It
involves a “tactile grammar”, based on the Loges method (Line
of Orientation, Guide and Safety), involving codes made of special
relief slabs with a macroscopic and markedly three-dimensional
texture, designed to be perceived under the feet. Inserted in the
flooring, they provide orientation and recognition of obstacles and
sources of danger for the visually impaired. With the Loges Floor
Path it is possible to create long “tactile tracks”, actual guided
itineraries, as well as simple “tactile signals”, to mark a specific
point of the urban route (e.g. a traffic light or a bus stop).

informazioni tecniche/technical informations
utilizzarlo come binario.
Straight direction: composed of 30x30 cm slabs having a surface
with a pattern of relief grooves that become closer together in
proximity to the side edges to signal the limit of the track. Proceeding
along the grooves, the visually impaired person can perceive with
each step the correct alignment between the longitudinal axis of his
foot and the guide-channels. Moreover, the tip of the walking stick
can be inserted into one of the channels to use it as a guide track.
tenzionale.
Stop/Danger: a strip composed of 20x20 cm slabs with a pattern of
relief domes distributed on diagonal lines. This texture transmits to
the feet a sensation of non-oriented unevenness, and in any case of
discomfort and awkwardness, very effective for calling the attention
of the visually impaired person, but also to reinforce traditional
warning signage.
In order of importance, the Loges codes are divided into two basic groups:
— first-level codes: codes essential for orientation and safety
— second-level codes: codes useful for the recognisability of places.

Attention/service: band composed of 20x20 cm slabs with a
densely striped relief surface. It is positioned in the route so that the
striping is perpendicular to the grooving of the Straight Direction
code to signal a continuation of it. It serves to indicate a point that
is easily passable but where it is still necessary to pay attention (for
example, passing through a door). Or when it is protruded to the
right or left with respect to the limits of the track, it indicates the
direction of an object or a service of interest adjacent to the route.
Compulsory L turn: square made of four 30x30slabs, divided into
two isosceles triangles resulting from the diagonal. One of the two
triangles has the dome pattern of the Stop/Danger code and the
other has the grooves of the straight direction code but sloped
at 45 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis. Therefore, in
application terms this square is the result of the composition of: one
slab with relief domes, two divided in half between relief domes and
grooves, and one with only grooves.
codici di secondo livello/second level codes
informazioni tecniche/technical informations
Passable danger: a band composed of the combination of two
codes: the Attention/Service code followed immediately by the
Stop/Danger code. It is situated in correspondence with a point
that must be passed through with caution, such as a pedestrian
crossing or before descending steps.
The T junction signal: is placed at the point in which the tactile
route offers the choice to turn right, left, or to continue straight on,
and is formed by one square tile covered with numerous disks that
are slighting protruding.

tactile routes
I percorsi completi
pericolose, spesso movimentate e affollate.
particolarmente importanti (uffici postali, ambulatori medici,
uffici comunali ecc.).
In large public places like squares, stations, or airports, there is a
guided route that leads to the various services present in the area
(benches, cafes, ticket offices, waiting rooms, platforms, etc.). The
location of the various services is generally indicated on a tactile
map that reproduces the route followed by the track, providing
the indications in Braille and in normal characters in relief (to be
readable also by partially sighted persons). The complete routes
must also be present on the platforms of railway stations and
underground stations, as these are extremely dangerous zones,
often crowded and busy. On city sidewalks, on the other hand,
where there are natural guides such as retaining walls, building
walls, or hedges, continuous tracks are not necessary; therefore,
there will not be complete tactile routes but tactile signals. In this
case, it is sufficient to signal the stops for public transportation, the
pedestrian crossings, and the entrances of particularly important
buildings (post offices, medical offices, local authority offices, etc.).

steptech
gradone, i nuovi elementi Battiscopa, Battiscala e Alzata. Su
mezzi.
L'utilizzo del sistema Steptech comporta numerosi vantaggi,
identificabili in:
Steptech is the range of steps produced by Florim Solutions. It is an
integrated project, designed to satisfy a variety of design needs and
to combine with all the Florim collections. A careful selection of the
chromatic range led to the identification of a palette of ten colours,
varying from beige to grey, and arriving at semi-absolute white and
black. The surfaces express an attractive material impact, featuring
extensive aesthetic versatility and wide flexibility in application.
The series is available with polished or matte finish and includes,
in addition to the step, the new elements: skirting tile, stair skirting,
and riser. The Grip Step and the non-Skid Step are also available
on request. The 40x120 cm size and 2 cm thickness make Steptech
particularly suited for use in areas that require excellent resistance
to static and dynamic loads. Steptech can also be used for outdoor
installations, laid wet with adhesive or dry, such as on a bed of sand,
in zones that are protected from the passage of vehicles.
Steptech use brings several advantages:
— greater rationality in the elements available
— rapid service (even on non-standard products)
— high resistance to stress and to static and dynamic loads
— application flexibility
— suitable for outdoor installation.

Florim Solutions is able to satisfy the many-faceted needs of urban
furnishing and proposes solutions suitable for paving areas exposed
to high levels of foot traffic, such as squares and sidewalks, where the
aesthetic integration with the environment must be accompanied
by the necessary characteristics of skid resistance and impact
resistance. The possibility to produce slabs with extra thickness also
enables use in areas exposed to the passage of motor vehicles and
to stresses deriving from static and dynamic loads. Florim products
are also ideal for architectural coverings, for creating decorative and
scenic effects that protect the structures, assuring high standards
of aesthetics, hygiene and cleanability. The high resistance to
chemical aggression and to atmospheric agents, the features of
impermeability, the physical-mechanical qualities and the ease
of cleaning all make Florim products ideal for covering roadway
tunnels and for installation in all contexts in which the attack of
smog, bacteria, and exhaust fumes impose the use of materials that

aspetto iniziali difficilmente riscontrabili in altri materiali. Tutto
— certificazione Ecolabel.

between building structures and the environment. Outdoors and in

offers characteristics of resistance to stress and the ability to

series of significant advantages:

settings in terms of environmental stressors

slim/4
a spessore tradizionale
Slim/4 is the name given to Florim’s thin tiles and 4 mm thick
porcelain stoneware slabs. It is the ideal product for remodelling and
for all uses of ceramic slabs in which less thickness and light weight,
even associated with the large sizes, represent an advantage for the
project and the laying. With the production technology developed
in-house at the Florim factories, the slabs are obtained by pressing.
This makes it possible to create a product that is extremely resistant
to the widest variety of stresses and does not require reinforcing
fibres, as well as eliminating the problems tied to the tensioning
of the material and the durability of the installation, at the same
time facilitating the cutting, drilling, and maintenance operations.
Available in the same graphics and raw materials as the collections
with conventional thickness, Slim/4 is a product for floors and walls
that is especially suitable for renovation projects and for laying over
existing materials.
The reduced thickness, light weight, and ease of transport and
handling on the construction site make Slim/4 a response in perfect
harmony with the new demands of the market.
The advantages, in fact, are numerous:
— eliminates the need to demolish the existing installations
— reduces the work time, consequently providing cost savings
— has technical characteristics entirely similar to those of the slabs
with conventional thickness
— applies less weight on the load-bearing structures and floors
— easy to clean and does not require special maintenance.

trowel, paying attention on the complete adhesion of the slabs
Warnings for floor
Slim/4 is particularly indicated for the installation on pre-existing
floors. In case of laying on new screeds, it is necessary to pay special
attention to the floor rough. It has to be absolutely compact,
homogeneous, well flattened and suitably seasoned. It is absolutely
necessary to respect every joint existing on the floor rough and on
the walls. Warning: use Slim/4 in places where there is no passage
of heavy point loads, as for example hard wheels cart traffic.
