Key facts about workplaces
Servces, ndustry, mnng, trade, commerce and agrculture (much of t subsstence agrculture) form the bass of the Namban economy. A breakdown of data on workplaces n dfferent sectors provdes the followng pcture of the world of work n Namba.
Workers n the publc sector (ncludng parastatals) 89 66
Number of Offices, Ministries and Agencies 8
Workers n the prvate sector 69 7
Number of employers wth 0-50 employees 500
Number of employers wth more than 50 employees 000
The impact of the epidemic on workplaces
Evdence of the mpact of HIV and AIDS n the workplace has not yet been documented natonally, however the epdemc threatens the world of work n many ways; negatvely mpactng on the demand for, supply of and qualty of goods and servces and, too often, creatng a msmatch between human resources and labour requrements. The llustraton below depcts what happens n a typcal workplace.

HIV and AIDS workplace programmes – the challenges
Despte the fact that the epdemc has taken ts toll on workplaces n every sector, the responses have, n many nstances, been less than optmal. Reasons for ths are that:
• There s often a lack of leadershp commtment and support for HIV and AIDS workplace programmes (WPP).
• HIV and AIDS are consdered to be a health ssue to be dealt wth by ndvdual workers, rather than as a workplace ssue.
• HIV and AIDS and WPP are not recognsed as a prorty by employers and managers and they are sceptcal about workplace HIV and AIDS nterventons, thnkng that the tme and cost requred wll compromse ther operatons.
• Stigma and discrimination constitute significant barriers to the effective implementation of HIV and AIDS actvtes n the workplace.
• Despte ntatves to encourage organsatons to have HIV and AIDS polces and programmes few have compled.

Access to Treatment, Care and Support Services
Investng n facltatng access to treatment, care and support servces for employees who are HIV nfected or affected can:
• Complement and enhance preventon;• Improve ther qualty of lfe and mantan ther workng capacty; and• Decrease the socal mpact of the epdemc.
Importantly all the servces should be part of a contnuum of ntegrated, qualty care, as depcted below:
