If it Doesn't Work it Could be Groundwork The Medrash (Medrash Raba 85:1)

tells us about Hashem’s reaction to

some of the thoughts of our leaders.

In this parsha, the Shevatim were

thinking about the sale of Yosef (that

they did the wrong thing); Yosef was

doing teshuva; Reuven was involved

with teshuva; Yehuda was involved in finding a wife for

himself; and Hashem was involved in creating the light of

Mashiach. The Medrash concludes that Hashem’s actions

were an outgrowth of Yehuda’s endeavor.

This Medrash is definitely puzzling, as it seems to say that

Yehuda was praised for his thoughts – even though he was

busy thinking about himself and not doing any introspec-

tion; whereas the others were in the wrong place with their

thoughts.

It is explained that many times people find themselves in

situations in which they are lost. At that point, many times,

people fall into despair and are frozen into inaction. Others

get so involved with perfecting themselves that they can end

up becoming self-centered. This idea that “everything is lost

for me” could actually do the opposite and become a cata-

lyst for great things. The Shem M’Shmuel gives an example

of this: The tzaddikim who preceded Avraham Avinu were

trying to perfect themselves, whereas Avraham was con-

cerned with forming a nation of people dedicated to the ser-

vice of Hashem. When it seems impossible to succeed, in a

sense, it sets the stage for us to lay the groundwork for fu-

ture successes.

I once heard from my Rosh Yeshiva in America that if one

looks at Tehillim he will find that every single human emo-

tion is addressed and directed to the service of Hashem,

from the thrill of triumph to the fear of being pursued.

When The Jewish people find themselves in various situa-

tions, they cradle the Tehillim in their hands and are able to

connect to Hashem because of the groundwork that Dovid

Hamelech established. The atmosphere of feeling useless

and dejected is what caused the shevatim to be paralyzed,

while it was the same atmosphere that caused Yehuda

to kindle the fire of the next generation. Yehuda realized

that adversity was not a cause to stop his life’s mission to

build Klal Yisrael.

Vaad Elections The new vaad thanks the membership for heeding the

Rav’s call and coming out in force: 46 members voted—

the highest number in over a decade. After having two

vaad meetings already, the vaad has assigned the

following tasks to each vaad member:

As Chanukah approaches and we marvel at the courage of

the Maccabees, we wonder to ourselves “From where did

those few grab the impetus to fight so many?” I would like

to suggest a new twist for an answer: They were aware that

even if they did not succeed, they would at least be laying

the groundwork for the success of future generations, by

showing what is worth fighting for. The miracle that hap-

pened was that they themselves were also successful.

Many times in our own lives we find ourselves paralyzed

with uncertainties and dejection, feeling forlorn and lost. It

is part of our national character that at those trying times in

particular, we grab the Tehillim of Dovid Hamelech and

latch on to words of hope and prayer, if not for ourselves,

then for others. We do this not only as a solace, but to cata-

pult us towards future success.

Tefilah Thoughts By Micha Kushner

Yaakov or Yisrael? We read last Shabbos about the battle between Yaakov

Avinu and the angel of Eisav, at the end of which Yaakov

received the additional name “Yisrael”. “No longer will

you be called Yaakov, rather Yisrael will be your

name” (Breishis 35:10). The name Yaakov comes from the

word עקב meaning “heel”, and refers to Yaakov grabbing

Eisav’s heel when they were born (25:26). The name

“Yisrael” is based on the verse (32:29) “for you have

striven with G-d and with men, and have prevailed.”

Yaakov hints at the lowly heel. Yisrael signifies success

and is the more honorable name.

The “Baruch She-amar” asks: If Yisrael is the more

honorable name and more dear to Hashem, why does the

Tefila use “Elokai Yaakov” instead of “Elokei Yisrael”?

His answer is based on a calculation the Kabbalists made.

The number of letters in the names of the fathers

The same is for the number of

letters in the names of the mothers

Together there are 26 letters and this is the Gematriya of

G-d’s name ה)-ו-ה-(י . If the Tefila had used the other name

(Elokai Yisrael), the Gematria of the fathers’ names would

be off by one letter (Yisrael has one letter more than

Yaakov) and we wouldn’t have a hint to the Gematriya of

G-d’s name – 26.

The “Baruch She-amar” adds a Remez from Tehilim

If it had not been the LORD who was for us, let Yisrael now

say…. Were it not for the number of letters in the names of

the fathers, which when joined with the mothers sum up

to G-d’s name (26), if not for that, then we would have

used the name Yisrael.

Mishneh Berurah Q&A Questions and answers culled from the Keter Hatorah Semicha Program in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim with the Mishneh Berurah. For details on this program see www.keterhatorah.com. Questions written by Lev Seltzer and used with permission.

Q At 11:00pm, the timer turned off all the lights in the salon,

but the Shabbos candles in the beautiful candelabra were

still aflame. Lloyd Sheldon wanted to do a little more learning

before going to bed, but he knew that it was forbidden to learn by

the light of a candle on Shabbos. According to all opinions,

may he ask his wife Millicent to stay in the room and be his

shomer to ensure that he does not touch the candles while he

learns by their light?

A Yes. Everyone agrees that a wife may be a proper shomer to

ensure that her husband does not touch the candles, as long

as she is sitting next to him.

Source: Siman 275 M.B. 11

Q At 11:30pm, Lloydʹs living room was now com-

pletely dark, as the Shabbos candles had gone

out, but he still wanted to read from his sefer. If he

asks his gentile next door neighbor, Trevor Flanni-

gan, to turn on a light in Lloydʹs home and then

Lloyd resumed reading his sefer, how many aveiros

would Lloyd have committed by this request?

A Two. 1. ʺAmira lʹakumʺ — the prohibition of

telling a gentile to do a melacha on Shabbos and

2. ʺHanaʹa mʹakumʺ — the prohibition of deriving

benefit from a forbidden activity done by a gentile on

Shabbos.
