Задание 1. Reading Comprehension (Part 1)

Questions 1-6 are based on Text 1. Read the following newspaper article. Six sentences have been removed

from it. Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (1-

6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

A Dog’s World

Alexandra Horowitz, a psychologist who studies dog behaviour, describes dogs as 'anthropologists among us', and in her engaging book Inside of a Dog, she studies them with the same intensity and affection that they devote to us. Even in the middle of a busy modern city, we are surrounded by all kinds of animals that share our space and our food, but only one of them bothers to study us.

To rats, crows and cockroaches, we are mostly an irritation and sometimes a threat. Dogs are different. [1________] They also try to control us, persuading us to provide them with food and shelter. People are used as tools to solve the puzzles of closed doors and empty water dishes.

Most interestingly, dogs confirm our prejudices about other people. [2_________] But in fact, when their dog greets a stranger with a wagging tail or a growl, he is copying his owner’s unconscious signals, which he has gradually worked out through smells and body language. If we want to understand the life of any animal, we need to think about it from their perspective. We need to know

what it can sense and how it responds to this. And, whereas humans see the world, a dog smells it. [3____________] Instead, they bravely stride up to an unknown object and take a nice deep sniff. When a dog turns its head towards you, it is to let his nose 'look' at you. The eyes just come along for the ride.

Sniffing objects gets smells to the brain via receptor cells in the nose. Humans have around six million of these. Six million seems an enormous amount but some dogs have more than 300 million, which explains their remarkable sense of smell. They put this to great use socially, especially by lifting a leg at every lamp post to convey a message. [4___________] Instead, the purpose is for them to leave information about themselves; how often they walk by that spot, their recent victories and how interested they are in mating. In this way, the pile of scents becomes a kind of noticeboard.

All mammals tend to produce the same kinds of sounds to express certain meanings and dogs take advantage of this when they communicate with humans. They are able to vary the length, range, pitch and frequency of their barks in different situations. [5__________] It has been suggested that dogs learnt to develop a wider vocal range as they became domesticated.

[6___________] Look a dog in the eyes, and you get a definite feeling that he's looking back. When information, reassurance or guidance is needed, they seem to inspect our faces. In fact, we are known by our dogs probably far better than we know them. They are amazingly skilful at spying on our every move, knowing about our comings and goings and whether we are anxious or sad. They are students of our behaviour and what makes them especially good is that they never tire of watching out for changes in our expressions and moods.

A All dog owners think that their pet is a good judge of character.

B Because of this, forgetting what we think we know about dogs is the best way to begin to understand them.

C But what about a dog's ability to see and understand?

D However, contrary to popular belief, the main point of this kind of communication is not to mark their territory.

E As a result, most people can tell whether a dog is happy, lonely or aggressive just by listening.

F Unlike wolves, they inspect our actions, interpret our emotions and, over time, learn how to please us.

G Dogs don't touch new things or stare at them as we do.

Задание 2. Reading Comprehension (Part 2)

Questions 7-18 are based on Text 2. Read the following magazine article.

For questions 7-18, do the tasks below.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

Doesn't that sound terribly yellow to you?'I can't say. I'm colour blind', was my flat·mate's response. And that was that

for another twenty odd years, when by chance I came across an article in a newspaper on research into synaesthesia at a London hospital. At last, I understood my interpretation of the world through colour.

Synaesthesia is the subjective sensation of a sense other than the one being stimulated. For example, the sight of a word may evoke sensations of colour or the sound of music may also have a similar effect, as may taste. Or, to put it simply. synaesthetes, i.e. people with synaesthesia, have their senses hooked together, so that they experience several senses simultaneously.

To those not already aware of it, synaesthesia seems a new phenomenon. Yet, it is far from new. In 1690, John Locke, the philosopher, wrote of a blind man with synaesthetic capabilities. The first reference in the medical field was in 1710, by Thomas Woodhouse, an English ophthalmologist. In his Theory of Colour, the German writer, Goethe talked about colour and the senses. The poet, Arthur Rimbaud, wrote about synaesthesia in his 1871 poem Voyelles, as did another French poet Baudelaire, in Correspondance. So, synaesthesia has a respectable history.

Synaesthesia is understandably met with a certain degree of skepticism since it is something beyond the ken of the vast majority of people. Son et lumiere shows in the 19th century were an attempt at combining the senses in a public display, but such displays were not capable of conveying the sensations experienced by involuntary synaethesia, as the ability which a synaesthete's experience is called.

There has been a number of well-documented synaesthetes. Alexander Scriabin, the Russian composer, (1871-1915), tried to express his own synaesthetic abilities in his symphony Prometheus, the Poem of Fire (1922). And another Russian, Rimsky-Korsakov, noted the colour associations musical keys possessed. For example. Scriabin saw C major as red, while to Rimsky·Korsakov it was white. Arthur Bliss, an English composer, based his 1922 Colour Symphony on the concept of synaesthesia. He did not claim to be a synaesthete; his colour choices were arbitrary and the project an intellectual exercise.

In the field of the visual arts, probably the best known artist with synaesthetic capabilities is the Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky (1866·1944)

Page 4: Предмет: Английский язык - kursksu.rukursksu.ru/documents/olymp2015/Tasks/Задания по...  · Web view32. For which jobs is it essential for the candidate

credited with being the founder of abstract painting. It is said he experienced 'sensory fusion' at a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin, with the music producing colours before his eyes. He did not see colours solely in terms of objects, but associated them with sounds. He even composed an opera, Der Gelbe Klang (The Yellow Sound), which was a mixture of colour, light, dance and sound.

For many people with synaesthesia, knowing that what they have been experiencing has both a name and a history and that they are among a number of notable sufferers is a revelation. Initially, they often feel that there is something wrong psychologically or mentally, or that everyone feels that way. Then they realise with a thud that other people do not. Suppression is an option, but unwittingly some people have managed to make use of the ability to their advantage. While the condition of synaestheia may hamper many people because of its disorienting effects, it can also open up a range of new skills. It is not unusual for people who have synaesthesia to be creative and imaginative. As many studies have shown, memory is based to some extent on association. Synaesthetes find they are able to remember certain things with great ease.

The person who associates the shape of a word with colour is quite often able to remember a longer sequence of words; and the same goes for other areas where memory needs to be used.

But this condition like all gifts, has its drawbacks. Some people see words as colours; others even individual letters and syllables, so that a word becomes a kaleidoscope of colour. Beautiful though such a reading experience may be, synaesthesia can cause problems with both reading and writing. Reading can take longer, because one has to wade through all the colours, as well as the words! And, because the colour sequences as well as the words have to fit together, writing is then equally difficult.

Questions 7-10 Do the statements below agree with the information in the text? In Boxes 7-10, write: Yes if the statement agrees with the information in the text. No if the statement contradicts the information in the text. Not Given if there is no information about the statement in the text.

7. Synaesthetes experience several senses at the same time. 8. Newspaper articles and TV news reports about synaesthesia are appearing with monotonous regularity nowadays. 9. Mention of synaesthesia can be traced back to the 17th century. 10. It is strange that many people are skeptical about synaesthesia.

Задание 3. Reading Comprehension (Part 3)

Questions 19-20 are based on Texts 3 and 4. For questions 19-20, read the following short texts and answer the

multiple-choice questions by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.

19. Text 3It is a curious tradition that the clock on the tower of Christ Church

Cathedral in Oxford is always five minutes later than standard British time. The explanation for this lies in the conservative nature of the Cathedral's clergy. It was only when the railways arrived in the middle of the nineteenth century that it became important for clocks throughout the country to be synchronised, however difficult this might be. When the Cathedral was asked to come into line, the clergy discussed the request but decided that this was an idea that needed to prove its worth before being adopted.

Why does Christ Church Cathedral clock give a different time from other British churches? A Oxford likes to be different from other places. B It was initially a protest against the coming of the railway. C Cathedral staff were reluctant to act too quickly. D It was very difficult to alter the time on the clock.

20. Text 4Zebras are members of the horse family. However, these 'stripey horses' are

not used for riding. Keen riders have occasionally attempted to try. Although zebras have at times let someone sit on their back, the rider soon discovered that a zebra's neck is stiffer than a horse's, lacking the suppleness that enables riders to control the horse. The structure of a zebra's back also makes it less suitable for riding. It would undoubtedly be possible to breed zebras that would ride well, but with the arrival of the internal combustion engine, there has not been much incentive to do so.

What is the writer's conclusion about zebras? A Zebras are not as similar to horses as they initially appear. B People have little motivation to develop a zebra that could be ridden. C It is unlikely that people could develop a zebra that would be good to ride. D Motorised vehicles are gradually reducing the numbers of zebras that are being bred.

Parking Hell

Local authorities in England and Wales now make more than £1 billion from the parking business. Yet there are growing accusations of sharp practice, and all over the country motorists are gearing up for battle.

Wednesday, 3.20. pm: David Nicknam, a North London parking attendant until last May, shuffles nervously down Hampstead High Street explaining the "tricks" he says he was taught here for issuing what he nonchalantly calls "dodgy tickets".

"I was told to give tickets no matter how legally a car was parked," Nicknam says with a disapproving frown, his greying ponytail and wispy beard incongruous among the impeccably groomed ladies strolling up the hill. "If a driver’s got a disabled badge, you write that there’s no badge. If there's a visitor's permit,

Page 10: Предмет: Английский язык - kursksu.rukursksu.ru/documents/olymp2015/Tasks/Задания по...  · Web view32. For which jobs is it essential for the candidate

sometimes you ignore it - it’s a question of 'Who's going to believe the driver?' And if you ask me if you can park for five minutes to collect someone, I'd be expected to say OK - and then ticket you once you have gone. He doesn't have your name, the thinking goes, so what’s he going to do?"

Nicknam, 39, was taking home £ 226.79 for a 42-hour week when he says he was sacked after three months’ probation. The reason, he says, is that he found grounds to ticket only five or six cars "legally" in a typical day, rather than the ten or more he says his superiors expected. "If I wanted to survive, to get a permanent job, I was told I'd have to bring in at least ten tickets no matter how," he says with ill-disguised contempt. The scams, he says, ranged from falsely claiming that bays had been suspended to hand-issuing deliberately mistimed tickets after claiming his computer was down. "I told them, I can’t do that. I said I believed in God. I asked my supervisors, ‘How do you sleep? Do you lie there dreaming about ticketing cars all night’?"

Camden council rejects his allegations, and, as a clearly disaffected former employee of the council's parking contractor, Nicknam is by no means neutral. He readily accepts that he bears grudges against NCP, whose management, he says, refused to hear his complaints and promoted supervisors who openly broke the rules. Yet his claims - of attendants falsifying observation times, issuing "ghost" tickets when cars were not present, dishonestly claiming tyres were outside parking bays - have all been made by other London parking attendants (PAs) in recent months. At stake is public confidence in the entire system of parking enforcement.

"You have to ask why drivers hate the PAs," Nicknam reflects as he crosses into Prince Arthur Road, a favourite spot, he explains, for colleagues to hide before pouncing on cars left for three minutes at school pick-up time. "How many people have spoken out before me? You have to ask why the council doesn't want PAs to help the drivers. You might call it cheating, but I call it stealing." He shakes his head and whispers disapprovingly. "It’s money, isn’t it? Money talks."

Council coffers are swelling not simply through parking tickets and bus-lane fines, but also from meter feeds and the sale of permits. Yet by any standards, the business of ticketing, clamping and removing cars is booming as never before.

The London boroughs issued almost seven million penalty charge notices in last year, up from £5.4 million in three years ago. Outside London, English and Welsh councils handed out almost three million more. By law, local authorities must regulate parking not primarily to raise money, but "to secure the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of vehicular and other traffic". Yet as the surpluses have risen over the years, so have public suspicions about the councils' true agenda. As Brian King, director of the RAC Foundation, sees it, local authorities

Page 11: Предмет: Английский язык - kursksu.rukursksu.ru/documents/olymp2015/Tasks/Задания по...  · Web view32. For which jobs is it essential for the candidate

now see parking as "a convenient and easy way to raise money, rather than as a policy issue".

Public tolerance is being tested with every television investigation alleging corruption, and with each outraged report of target-fixated attendants ticketing buses, fire engines, even a rabbit-hutch whose owner, delivering to a Manchester pet shop, moved his van before a warden could pounce.

"It's the biggest fraud that goes on," claims Jim Carlson, a Pimlico accountant who runs Appeal.com, one of a growing number of websites campaigning against what they see as unjust use of parking regulations to make money. Carlson has heard it all: Pas falsifying information in their notebooks to "prove" that correctly parked cars were elsewhere; motorists illegally ticketed long after they had driven off. He makes an annual award to the victim of what he considers the most absurd abuse of PA's powers. Its latest winner was Nadhim Zahawi, who was handed a penalty charge notice in central London as he lay in the road with a broken leg after coming off his scooter.

"The councils are very happy to allow a poor system to continue, because they get the revenue," Carlson says wearily. "Nobody now has faith in the system. I certainly don’t."

(1) Even in today’s modern society, many people still perform rituals on a daily basis; they knock on wood to ward off bad luck or throw salt over their shoulders to repel evil spirits. (2) Every culture has its own superstitions, and now anthropologists and psychologists think they know why.

(3) It is because our brains are always working to find the causes of the significant events that we perceive. (4) When something strange happens that we can’t explain, our minds are uncomfortable with the uncertainty. (5) However, we fill this cognitive gap with whatever explanations are available to us, and superstitions provide a simple way to explain mysterious events. (6) They believe that spirits that live in wood have to be appeased, or that throwing salt blinds the devil. (7) Our minds are capable of great things, as anyone who has studied famous artists and inventors knows. (8) Superstitions may seem silly to nonbelievers not sharing them. (9) To believers those rituals on the other hand are providing a sense of control over situations otherwise which would be unsettling.

(12) If someone dies of a strange disease or a sudden misfortune befalls a family, the villagers might assume it is because someone in the family has secretly cast a spell. (13) Sometimes, children will be taken by members of their own family and beaten, disowned or even killed.

(14) People should be careful not to let superstitions get in the way of their compassion for others. (15) They might also be better off using science to explain strange events whenever possible.

Conservationists have long debated whether the koala should go on the Australian national threatened species list. [1_________] the koala is clearly in trouble in some parts of the country - in Queensland, for example, high numbers are afflicted by disease - in other parts such as Victoria and South Australia the problem is not that koala populations [2___________], but that they have grown to the point where they are almost too numerous. For a species to be classed as vulnerable, its population [3____________] by more than 30 percent over the last three generations or 10 years. The problem is that when such a stipulation is applied to koalas, the Victorian boom offsets the Queensland bust, and the species stays off the list. This has repercussions because northern koalas are different to southern ones. They are smaller, for example, and they contain a genetic variation not represented in the South. [4__________], a split listing has been devised koalas from New South Wales, the ACT and Queensland are now officially 'Vulnerable'; those from Victoria and South Australia are not considered threatened.
