Beijing Volunteer Service Expert Delegation Completes Successful Mission to Thailand and Myanmar
by BVF
A Volunteer service expert delegation from Beijing recently
went on mission to the South-South Knowledge Exchange on
Youth Volunteering for SDGs from 20th to 27th June 2017,
hosted by the UNV and Thailand International Cooperation
Agency (TICA). Delegates were from the Phase III Volunteer
Service Cooperation Project of United Nations Volunteers (UNV)
and Beijing Volunteer Service Federation, invited by the UNV
Asia Pacific Office, the Foreign Affairs Office of Beijing
Municipality, Beijing Youth Federation, Beijing Volunteer Service
Federation (BVF), who jointly organized relevant experts and
international project managers to meet in Thailand.
The conference, South-South Knowledge Exchange on Youth
Volunteering for SDGs, was hosted in Bangkok, Thailand from
20th to 23thJune 2017. More than 200 delegates from ASEAN
countries, China, South Korea and Japan were invited, including
government officials, UN agencies, representatives of VIOs,
enterprises, scholars and outstanding youth volunteers. The
conference provided a platform for knowledge sharing,
focusing on youth volunteer service’s positive effects for the
SDGs and recognizing the potential opportunities and
challenges of sponsoring south-south cooperation.
At the conference, Ms. LIU Nian, the chief of the Beijing
delegation, gave a speech on “Promoting SDGs through
Volunteerism - Beijing Experience and Future Step”. She
emphasized the importance of highlighting developing
countries’ experience and demands for guiding development,
and introduced the development of a volunteer service in
Beijing. During her speech, Ms. LIU underlined Beijing’s
support for expanding international volunteer service
cooperation, and plans for establishing innovative cooperation
mechanisms, pilot programs and joint academic research
initiatives. She also put forward the formulation of “the
International Volunteering Alliance for the Belt and Road
Initiative”, and welcomed participants to attend the
International Volunteer Service Exchange Conference that will
be held by the UNV and BVF at the end of this year.
During the conference, the delegation exchanged ideas and
put forward questions on volunteer mobilization and risk
management to the guest speakers. They also communicated
extensively with more than 30 VIOs. Through mutual sharing
and learning, the Beijing delegation reached a consensus on
promoting volunteer service cooperation regionally and
internationally. The Beijing delegation also went to Myanmar to
attend a UNV partnership meeting, where they visited the UNV
Myanmar officers, engaged in discussion with local VIOs,
engaged with China’s overseas enterprises, and carried out
project medium-term evaluations on the United Nations Youth
Volunteer assignment.
The delegation to Myanmar held several panel discussions with
Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO), the UK Voluntary
Service Overseas (VSO), Mingalarpar Youth Charity Organization
Youth Charity. Topics discussed included experiences from local
project management of the international and regional volunteer
service organization, and setting a good foundation of “going
out” for Beijing Volunteer Service in the future. UNV Chief
Project Coordinator Alexandra and Asia Pacific Regional
Manager Manon held bilateral meetings with Beijing
representatives, and made a mid-term assessment of China’s
youth volunteer program of the United Nations. Both sides
agreed that the Chinese volunteers played an important role in
the work of the United Nations, and hope to deepen
cooperation with the Beijing UNV project.
According to the actual investigation and analysis, the
participants had a deep understanding of all volunteer service
conditions of ASEAN countries. It was agreed that the
international conference is an important way for China’s
voluntary service to make its voice heard around the world.
International voluntary service cooperation should establish
long-term mechanisms, build risk awareness, and improve risk
managements. At the same time, we should normalize the
training of international volunteer service talents and enhance
the sustainable development of international volunteer service.

Yalin Wu's biggest challenge for her first month in Myanmar
is to adapt herself to the new position and local vibe as fast as
possible - "Life in Myanmar is much challenging particularly in
terms of getting clean water, constant supply power, food &
sanitation, stable internet and public transportation; and my
new assignment in UN is quite different from my former work
experience. Making friends with locals regardless of their colors,
races, genders and religions, help me quickly equip myself with
massive experience and important tips for daily life and
voluntary service."
“This UNV program is my first work experience within the UN
system. And I have to say they have a pretty effective and quick
response communication system, members from different
countries, departments and levels are active to express
themselves and push the progress.”
