.ABSTRACT
The European Union includes 27 member states with great social, economic, cultural and
geographical differences. Despite being the largest economy in the world, the inequalities between
member states are significant and the Union is facing great competition from other states. A major
concern towards preserving the Unions competitiveness is its economic and social cohesion. To
achieve this convergence many actions have been taken but still the wanted levels of cohesion
havent been met and the Unions future competitiveness is being questioned. Going through themost severe economic crisis since World War II, it seems we are heading towards a multi speed
Europe, with the periphery lagging behind the core and the forces towards an ever deeper union to
be waning. In the research part of this essay, there was an attempt to study the attitudes and beliefs
of Home Economics students regarding European Union issues. The tendency for general
questioning is clear. The European Union is not something fully trusted, which could be a sign of
the times taking into consideration the pro European feelings of the Greeks as they are clear in
former euro barometers. The European feeling of descent still runs high but is accompanied by
feelings of cautiousness.
