As we end the month of May and finally start to see some warmer

weather that we’ve all been waiting for, I am so proud of all the

accomplishments achieved at the Senior Activity Center of Smyrna.

May 1, as proclaimed by the Smyrna Town Council, was Smyrna

Senior Citizens Day - a day where the senior population throughout

all of Smyrna is honored in the community.

On May 5-6, we participated in The Big Payback, a 24-hour online

giving event sponsored by the Community Foundation of Middle

Tennessee. Through the generous donations raised online and at the

Center, we raised more than $3,000. Thank you so much to all of you

who supported us.

On May 11, 120 SAC members along with some special guests

gathered at the Smyrna Event Center for a luncheon to celebrate

Older Americans Month and to kickoff our 50th Anniversary

festivities. Patsy Brown, founding Director of the Senior Center, was

surprised when she was presented with a proclamation honoring her

from Mayor Mary Esther Reed. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch,

entertainment from Eddie K and lots of door prizes.

Also on May 11, the SAC received the Light-Up Local Firefly Award as

the Best Non-Profit Organization in Smyrna. This award was

sponsored by the Smyrna Independent Merchants Association and

Locally Owned Murfreesboro.

As we move into June, we will be in full YARD SALE mode the first

two weeks. Thanks to all of you for your donations and your time. It

will be exciting to share our center with the community again.

The 50th Anniversary Committee is busy making plans to celebrate

this milestone event beginning in May, 2021. Please mark your

calendar for the following dates:

June 1 - 50th Anniversary Quilt Raffle Tickets go on sale. Pulling the wool over my eyes is usually pretty hard to do; I sniff things out rather

easily (my children can attest to that!). That wasn’t the case, however, when I

was taken completely by surprise with being honored at the event celebrating

Older Americans Month and the 50th Anniversary of the Senior Activity Center.

Words don’t come easily to express my appreciation to so many, but I’ll try:

THANK YOU TO THESE:

Fran Dunne, and the 50th Anniversary Committee for this honor. I suppose my

missing a meeting or two of the committee resulted in some secret planning!

Mayor Mary Esther Reed, Vice Mayor Marc Adkins, Councilman H. G. Cole,

Councilwoman Racquel Peebles, Councilman Gerry Short, and Councilman Steve

Sullivan for your attendance and for the Proclamation from the Office of the

Mayor.

Shelby Moore, Kay Clark, Linda McNeill and Jackie Vaughan, for the most

beautiful decorations ever,

Juan Beraldi and Humana for sponsoring the event, and having gift bags for

everyone which included a $25 gift card for a choice of four restaurants,

Pastor Theresa Johnson, Smyrna First United Methodist Church, where the idea

of a senior organization began in 1971, for her remarks and blessing of the meal,

Chef Anthony Beverly, Rhonda Brown and Rebecca Moore, for the wonderful meal

and set-up of the room,

Jesse Fitzgerald, Ellen O’Day, Barbara Cassell, Cathy Vallarta, Marsha Masonoff,

Ronald Woody, Martha Bowen, Dennis Skiles and Greg Ball, for the hours you put

in researching for and producing the skit. You all are ready for Broadway!!

Mary Lou Gudelis, Dottie Sims, Janie Thomas, Dawn Patterson, Mary Crawford,

Carolyn Fox, Teresa Dow, Dennis Skiles, Ronald and Deborah Woody, for

canvassing Smyrna businesses and individuals to donate door prizes,

And lastly, to Eddie K, for his usual great entertainment!

And it was another surprise this week when Jeanie Gulzau and the Ceramics

Class presented me with a beautiful plate with “50th Anniversary” on it.

My deepest gratitude to all of these, and to you, the members of the Senior Activity Center. We have experienced a year like no other, and hopefully, we won’t again, so having your support of the Center means we will continue to be a place where others will come to enjoy fellowship and activities for another 50 years.

To honor our 50th Anniversary, our Quilters have worked hard to

make a special quilt to be raffled off this year. Thank you to Jeanie

Gulzau, Sue Payne, Jeanne Phipps, and Carol Sutton for all the time

you spent in creating the beautiful “Basket Weave” quilt.

In addition, we have a beautiful Christmas quilt that was made and

donated by one of our newest members, Carolyn Carlson.

In 2020, Pat Lee from Action Homes donated two beautiful doll

houses for us to use to raise funds for the Senior Activity Center. We

will also be giving away one of these doll houses.

Raffle tickets will be sold beginning June 1 for $1.00 each. We will

continue to sell tickets through September 25 and will announce the

winner at the conclusion of Depot Days. We will draw 3 tickets. The

first will win the 50th Anniversary quilt, the second will win the

Christmas quilt and the third will win the doll house.

Our Yard Sale is right

around the Corner and

we are so excited to be

able to bring the Commu-

nity back onto our

property.

WE NEED YOU! There

are still spots for

volunteers so please let

us know if you can work.

Remember - you can

start bringing your items

to donate on June 1 and

can continue to bring

them through June 8.

Come join the fun as we play

Corn Hole. Hopefully, we will

be able to form a team to

compete against other Senior

Centers. It is also a great form

of exercise.
