The Heathrow Connection APRIL/MAY/JUNE
2014 A NOTE FROM NATE...
Dear Members:
I have to say that, aside from the February rains, the year is off to a great
start! It is hard to believe how fast the time is going.
As you know, we are in the process of completely renovating the locker rooms at The Racquet Club. The project is on schedule and moving along very well (look to page 8 for photos). We hope that you are as excited to use your new facilities as we are to reveal them to you! This month, we are also resurfacing the interior of the main swimming pool and the baby pool. For those of you with swim team members in the family, you will notice
brand new lane ropes this season!
Another project that will be done this spring is the rebuilding of the seawall on hole #7. At this point, our plan is to begin this project shortly after the Men’s Member-Guest tournament, but we will keep you posted as the
schedule and plan firm up.
We have also been very busy completing several smaller scale projects around the club. We replaced all of the drapery in the Grand Ballroom, added concrete curbing to several landscape beds at the main club-house, and continue to add new landscaping focal points around the property. This month we will be building a new cabinet for the ice and water station at the Golf Service Center, installing a golf spike com-pressed air cleaning station outside of the Golf Shop, and replacing the outdoor event tent on the lawn at the Racquet Club. These are just a few of the projects at the club, and you will notice several others as the
year goes on.
One of our primary concerns, at all times, is keeping the golf course in peak playability and aesthetic con-dition. We need your help to do this. Please follow and abide by the following policies, unless you have a
club-approved handicap flag for your golf cart:
Unless otherwise indicated by signage or directional post and rope, all golf carts must be kept a
minimum of 30 yards from all greens.
All par three holes are to be played as cart path only. Carts should never be on the turf on a par three
hole.
Please refrain from parking golf carts directly adjacent to tee boxes and never park golf carts on the
slopes of tee boxes.
Please know that we sincerely appreciate your help in making this golf course the best it can possibly be!
On behalf of the entire staff, I want to thank you for your continued support of Heathrow Country Club. Please know you are very much appreciated and valued. Without members, there would not be a club! Please remember that my door is always open for you to stop by to voice a concern, ask a question, dis-
cuss an idea, or just to visit.
Very truly yours,
Nate Kalb. Director of Operations

THINGS TO LOOK FOR...
2014 Men’s Club Championship A Success Held on March 8th & 9th, our 2014 Men’s Club Championship was a successful event where good fun and competition was enjoyed by all.
Look for these upcoming events: Ladies Closing Day: May 15th
MGA President’s Cup: May 16-17
2014 Memorial Tournament: May 26th
U.S. Open Tough Day: June 14th
Red, White & Blue Tournament: July 4th
A Tip from the Pro Need more distance?
270 or more!
I spend many enjoyable hours each week helping our members improve their technique and spend a lot of that time working on backswings. This part of the swing can be de-scribed in many ways. Upright, flat, short, long quick, smooth and jerky but in truth, this movement puts us in the best position in which to swing down and attack the golf ball.
If you are need some power in your shots and a better backswing try these ideas. We call it “The 270
backswing.”
Chris demonstrates the 270 backswing
Men’s Club Championship Trophies
The Heathrow Connection April/May/June 2014
Congratulations to our new champions:
(Written for a right-handed golfer)
1. Turn your shoulders from your address position so your back faces your target. (90 degrees).
2. Hinge your left wrist. Doing this will create a powerful position between the left arm and club shaft.(90 degrees).
3. Allow your right elbow to fold/bend only 90 degrees. (most golfers bend their right arm way too much).
Give these ideas a try and you might be hitting your driver 270 or more. Always remember, all swing changes feel strange at first so be patient and allow time for them to feel part of your normal swing.
Chris Holmes is presented his award for being one of the TOP 50 Junior Golf Instructors in the country by U.S. Kid’s Golf at the PGA Merchandise Show in January.
Heathrow’s Juniors Flourish PGA Junior League Last year, Heathrow Country Club entered a team in The PGA Jr. League, which was our first try in this fun event (similar to little league baseball). The “All Star” team was one match away
from reaching The South East finals, an incredible performance from every-one involved. This year, we plan to have two squads of twelve players, so please contact me ASAP for details, as practice will begin in April.
Students doing well Long time student and member Timmy Hanzelko (pictured here, 2nd from right, taking lessons from Tim Burns in his early days!) won the Men's Club Championship in March! After 36 holes of stroke play, he managed to beat fellow member Erik Hansen by birdieing the first extra hole. Great job!
Junior member Linus Lo made an incredible 10 birdies in his second round at Rio Pinar Golf Club. He tied for first place and narrowly lost in a two man play-off!
Junior member Jackson “A.J.” Holmes managed to break par for the first time scoring an excellent 70 (-1) from the red tees. This really is a superb performance, as he has been
playing golf for less than a year!!!! - Chris Holmes, Director of Golf Instruction
Junior Golfers having fun throughout the past few months!
From your Superintendent...
First of all, I can’t thank the
membership here at Heathrow
enough for the kind compliments
they bestow on the maintenance
staff. They get passed on to the
team and are well-received and
very appreciated.
Over the cooler months, we
were able to complete many
projects out on the course, and
every day, we get closer to our
goals of restoring Heathrow back
to where it needs to be. We are
always open for suggestions from
the members and have made many
improvements because of this
feedback. With those ideas in con-
junction with Nate’s support, we’ve
been able to “chip away” at many
items needing attention. We will
always continue to do so, as the
list never goes away.
I can’t wait for the Member-
Guest in April! This is our
“ Masters” tournament, and prepa-
rations begin months and months
ahead of time. With the team we
have (all departments) here at
Heathrow, it should be one to
remember.
With summer just around the
bend, be sure to replenish the sun
block and stay hydrated. Hit ‘em
long and straight, and I’ll see you
out on the course! Thank you.

Heathrow’s Ladies Finish Their Seasons HWGA by President Bev Logan
The beginning of 2014 for the ladies league has been a
wet and cold one, causing us to miss out on several play
days. However, there have been a few “hardy” souls that
have persevered through a round of less than favorable
weather. The sun came through for our annual Member-
Guest event in March hosted by Kim Stepp and Meigan
Putnam. 24 members and their guests came out to do battle, with the overall Shoot
Out Champions being Ann Liguori and guest Jane Imperiale. Runners up in the
shoot out were Debby Vangrov and guest Joy Clark. Congratulations to all of the
gross & net Flight winners: 1st Flight - M.
Putnam /D. Ogaard-Nielsen (132) & K. O’Don-
nell / S. Gray (109); 2nd Flight – M. Ryan / P.
Morris (141) & A. Liguori / J. Imperiale (114); 3rd

Scarbrough and Karen O’Donnel; long drive Joy Russo and Linda Dillon; and clos-
est to the pin winners Jane Imperiale, Amanda Varga, Debby Vangrov and Su-
zanne Gray. A big thank you to Kathy Brown and Marie Coln for all of their hard
work putting together a road trip to Falcon’s Fire on April 3rd.
The HWGA/Niners step aside scramble will be held on April 17th hosted by Bev
Logan and Barb DiMarco. Luncheon and prizes will follow the event along with a
trunk show for the ladies. Missy Long, representative for Tail, will bring out their
new line for everyone to check out and make purchases. The HWGA wraps up the
season with a closing day scramble and luncheon on May 15th. Have a great
summer everyone and we will see you in September for the 2014-15 season!

Literary Society
The Heathrow Connection April/May/June 2014
Literary Society members meet March 5th to discuss The Grapes of Wrath
The Literary Society meets the first Wednesday of every month at 11:00 am in the Terrace. They encourage first-timers to join, even if just for con-versation, or to simply relax, and reflect on the book and other happenings with fellow members. Organized by David Poff, the meetings consist of anywhere from 5 to 15 members in a round table discussion that welcome new members, new ide-as, new book suggestions, and most of all, new friends. Over lunch or coffee or tea, the group discusses the book, shares ideas, and enjoys conversation.
Upcoming Meetings:
April 2nd West with the Night by Beryl Markham
May 7th 1984 by George Orwell
June 4th Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global
Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else by Chrystia Freeland
Is our Director of Operations trying to
hide from us? Nate, you may need to
wear a different color shirt next time! :)
Therefore, it is recommended that you join them, even if you have not read the book! And if you have, you can expect to ex-plore characters differently than you may have yourself while simultaneously gaining insight to and respect for other’s inter-pretations of the same book. Another benefit to becoming a part of this group is that you are pushed to explore genres and au-thors you normally wouldn’t choose for yourself. After leaving the meeting, you feel not only more learned but also a sense of great camaraderie and fellowship. Not to mention, you can final-ly cross that book off your reading list!

That means it’s time to start planning your children’s

on our Swim Team, and Group & Private Swim Lessons will be available at the Tennis Pro Shop beginning April 1st.

In preparation of the busy
summer season, the Racquet

these tasks will be completed
within a matter of weeks, and
there are rumors that the old,
grass-skirted Tiki Hut is getting

later this year.

THE POWER OF HYDRATION
As we start the transition from cool air temperatures and low humidity to hot summer days and humidity that is through the roof we need to start paying attention to our hydration levels. Here are some helpful suggestions to
keep your body properly hydrated:
Pre-hydrate before exercise; drink 15 to 20 fl. oz. 2 to 3 hours before you exercise.
Drink 8 to 10 fl. oz.15 to 20 minutes right before you exercise.
Drink 8 to 10 fl. oz. every 15 minutes during exercise. If you are exercising for an extended amount of time, drink a sports drink to replenish the sodium and potassium every 20 to 30 minutes.
After exercise, weigh yourself. Drink 20 to 24 fl. oz. per pound lost!
Consume a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein to replenish glycogen levels.
Do not drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated
beverages as caffeine dehydrates your muscles. After exercise, you also need to replenish important minerals and nutrients, such as
potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as these minerals regulate the activity in your nerves and
muscles.— Ross Bohlken

FOOT WORK
Without question, footwork is one of the most important aspects of tennis and
most sports. Most tennis players spend tons of time working on proper grips and stroke production, which is important, but
one sure way to improve your game is with your footwork.
Key one for foot work: The Split Step Each time your opponent or your partner
is about to make contact with the ball, you need to split step. The split step is the first
reaction to every shot you must return. The split step is basically jumping up one to two inches off the court and landing on your toes (heels off the court), shoulders length apart, and knees comfortably bent. Now you are ready to move north, south, east, and west. The split should be used
on service returns, groundstrokes, volleys and when approaching the net. If you
failed to split step, you will be caught flat-footed and your reaction will be slowed,
which usually results in a weak shot
When teaching on the court, I tell my students that most errors are usually
footwork-based. Try split stepping next time you are on the court, and I’m sure
you will notice a difference. It takes more energy, but you will have better results
and a better workout.
See you on the court! -Barry Myers

CURLIN’S CATERING
CORNER The Heathrow Connection April/May/June 2014
SPRING IS IN THE AIR! Awe – the fresh smells and tastes of Spring and Summer foods... I love the beginning of Spring and all the fresh vegetables, fruits, and flavors that bond together...even for some unique ways to turn Fried Chicken or Hot Dogs into “GOURMET” – I know, right? I don’t get to dine out much as you can imagine with my schedule and two Clubs now, but when I do see unique ideas, I like to share them. With the rise of so many staple items going up in price, even BACON recently, we have to be cre-ative in the Catering world to help keep our menus price friendly for so many different types of events.
It is Graduation, Prom, Communion and Pool Party Season, and we get lots of calls for these types of events. Obviously when families are invited and have to pay for themselves, it can get costly, so we are there to help. The simpler you keep the men-us and try to coordinate menus, it helps all parties stay in budget.
Here are some new food ideas I want to share. Enjoy!
Fried Chicken has found itself onto every menu no matter the concept. Gingery Fried Chicken Breast Bites with dried or fresh ginger in a white wine marinade with a chili garlic peanut sauce or carrot ginger dressing rounds out a picnic menu with coleslaw and peach iced tea.
America’s iconic Hot Dog starts receiving haute treatment. How about topping it with a Green Apple or Spicy Har-vest Chutney.
Super foods are more prevalent in menus for health-conscious diners. How about a Sweet Potato mash with your break-fast or Goat Cheese and Beet Salad for lunch – (love beets!) How about Roasted Garbanzo Beans with Sea Salt and Goji Berries instead of Potato Chips.
Vegans and Vegetarians have a lot more variety with produce-driven menus. How about some Ginger Plantain French Toast or Fresh Fruit Skewers with Dark Chocolate Drizzle – YUM.
Beef and Pork – wow – talk about price hikes. Luckily, there is nothing better than Turkey. I LOVE Turkey Bacon, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Meatloaf, Stroganoff, and even Chili – and it is much healthier!
Desserts
When was the last time you had Rhubarb Pie or Jam – it brings me back to my early childhood in Colorado – loved picking Rhubarb and the joy of the outcome in the kitchen! Here is a great idea for a fun dessert bar:
Take small ice cream cones flat on the bottom and pipe different flavors of mousse – key lime, chocolate, mango, raspberry – too many to mention – and pipe them into the cones like ice cream, and top with a variety of toppings and
sprinkles. A mini moussecone dessert station is so cute!
Beverages
Spring Fling Green Lemonade – alcoholic or non – ei-ther way it’s SO refreshing. Muddled kiwi, lavender in-fused simple syrup, limeade and lemonade, kiwi garnish – and for vodka try citrus or strawberry.
Try a May Day from the bond film Casino Royale. Rum, peaches, strawberries, apple juice, sugar, gin-ger, passion fruit and crushed ice – blend and enjoy with an apple slice.
Enjoy the start of Spring and Summer and remember if you need anything – we LOVE to come up with new ideas on a budget. We look forward to seeing you around the Club. Your home away from home.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS
Spring is here, and Capital Improvements are in Full Bloom...
Over the past three to four months much of the discussion at the Board of Governor’s meetings has been centered on
making improvements to our Club’s facilities. While the list of opportunities to improve what we as members see and use
while at the Club is significant, your Board has focused on helping to prioritize and reinforce the need for speed when it
comes to getting things done. The Board and the Management Team are absolutely aligned on what the needs are and
how they should be prioritized, the tough part is access to capital funds to get it all done. Now that the land sale behind
the 9th Green has been completed funds have been released to enable us to get going with a sense of urgency in critical
areas.
The projects you as members have raised as important to the overall satisfaction of our membership base and critical
when it comes to maintaining Heathrow’s status as one of the best Clubs in the Orlando area have begun! These projects
amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars include:
Refurbishment of the Racquet/Fitness Club Locker Rooms
Resurfacing of the Aquatic Center Pool
Golf Course Green Expansion on prioritized greens
Golf Course Tree Pruning & Trimming
Repair/Reconstruction of the Wall surrounding the fairway on Hole #7
The other significant category of discussion at our Board meetings has to do with the overall attention to detail at all levels
of service to our membership. While some things may seem small, in the aggregate they can create a sense of commit-
ment on the part of Club leadership and staff to pay attention to all the details and touch points such that members walk
away from their Club experience with a perspective that everyone cares and is committed to providing excellence in the
services they offer. With that said, there will always be opportunities to improve and one-off misses will occur, but in the
main the Board’s perspective is that all categories at the Club are trending up when it comes to customer service.
Our Food & Beverage areas are getting stronger every month, the Grill Room environment is more inviting and fresh, and
specialty events are carried forward with attention to detail and making all who attend feel great about their experience at
the Club.
We have to say, one of the BEST observances we as a Board are seeing is that all levels of Leadership at the Club are
listening. Never is an idea or recommendation discarded out of hand, but rather we are talking through the key areas that
will “move the needle” when it comes to representing the Club’s services and activities to our members.
Our closing perspective for all our members is this – while we have imperfections at various places along the way, the
commitment is there to tackle it all. Prioritization is the key when it comes to the big projects, service excellence is a daily
requirement and accountability to get
it right when it goes wrong is manda-
tory for all positions at the Club.

Want to advertise your business in the Heathrow Connection?
We are looking for new sponsors! After many years, Don Reid Ford is no longer supplying the advertisement in our news-
letter. We want to give them a BIG THANK YOU on behalf of all HCC staff. They have
continuously supported us and were an absolute pleasure to work with.
That being said, we now have space available for another advertisement in our next
edition, which will debut in July for the July/August/September quarter. Based on the
response of the membership, this could be for an entire page, a half page, or quarter
page. This could be a wonderful opportunity to reach over 900 families in the
